People are really this worried about cartoonish doodles on the website of a private company? Google wants to celebrate science and art, not death and American nationalism (which for some reason seem to go hand in hand). And why _should_ Google celebrate American nationalism? Isn't it time we start acting like the global community we're supposed to be? Why do we place so much importance on arbitrary divisions of territory? - KingGorilla, on 06/14/2008, -21/+337Ohhhh they don't commemorate Veterans day. TERRORISTS
- shirosamurai, on 06/14/2008, -28/+266Surprised this isn't from Fox News - sounds a lot like the same tripe about a certain presidential candidate who wouldn't wear a certain pin on his lapel.
- ICSU, on 06/14/2008, -8/+189It's the usual chauvinist *****: either you are with us or against us. (Also see the paranoid comments.)
- xsanctom, on 06/14/2008, -19/+184"Does Google Hate America?" - LOL! What a ***** pathetic propoganda title, jesus christ.
And who cares about the doodles on the page? It's cute to commemorate certain things, and they like to mix it up, it's not there for *****'ing.
/bury. - fryeguy, on 06/14/2008, -27/+186um...i love google
- Zector, on 06/14/2008, -17/+158I don't know, does Google wear a flag pin?
I feel as though I can't make a decision unless I know for sure. - FlynnRocks, on 06/14/2008, -46/+161What the hell is wrong with Slate.com?
I hate them now. - MenthiX, on 06/14/2008, -9/+119I thought Google refused to give their employers free time on holidays or something.
Google is an international search engine, even I see the doodles in the Netherlands. I can understand why they prefer to dedicate their doodles to more global holidays and events. - charm803, on 06/14/2008, -15/+119How dare they celebrate Earth Day, just because we live on a planet?
And who cares about science, I mean, Sputnik?
Right?
OMG
Do pundits EVER not have something to complain about? - Mootabolife, on 06/14/2008, -3/+103"Few keep a closer watch on Google than the editors of National Review. For years, they have monitored Google's doodles in search of value judgments about America."
LOL - kungfuboi, on 06/14/2008, -9/+100i dunno, they seem to be terrorists
the most recent doodle has a guy mimicking a fist jab reminiscent of a hand sign used by hezbollah
http://www.google.com/logos/everest08.gif - enclaved, on 06/14/2008, -12/+102Holy hell, people have the kinda time to cry about this stuff?
- Fritzed, on 06/14/2008, -3/+81You do realize that Slate is reporting on the crazy people, not promoting these theories themselves, right?
- Shadowgamers, on 06/14/2008, -12/+81I want to slap Chris Thompson with a fish for blowing a logo out of proportions.
- Rabbittt, on 06/14/2008, -2/+70The author is mocking people who complain about Google's modifications to their logo.. The sarcasm is palpable..
- trevorh, on 06/14/2008, -7/+75This is ridiculous I for one like that Google chooses to celebrate science, art, and obscure events instead of generic religious holidays and patriotic celebrations.
- inactive, on 06/14/2008, -9/+62Is this a joke? I really hope so.
- Rabbittt, on 06/14/2008, -8/+59More "if you're not with us, you're against us" mumbo-jumbo BS..
BTW the article is just exposing this, not supporting it.. - PotatoSamurai, on 06/14/2008, -11/+54"Google wants to celebrate science and art, not death and American nationalism (which for some reason seem to go hand in hand)"
Nationalism really defines itself by death and struggle; It's certainly not unique to America. Australia has its subjugation of the natives, France has the atrocities of the Revolution, and Britain a legacy of imperialism that ***** up the world. Nationalism is a perversion of the purpose of a nation-state: to unite the people, not to agitate their xenophobia, but to overcome their difficulties with a common strength. - inactive, on 06/14/2008, -2/+42*sigh* I remove the politics section, and it STILL seeps through...
- waydee, on 06/14/2008, -3/+41What the hell is wrong with American conservatives...
- mCanada, on 06/14/2008, -3/+42The best part - "worldnetdaily.com" accused google a company whose stock is currently worth 500+ per share and a market cap of umpteen billions of been "communists" lol lol
- BigPuddle, on 06/14/2008, -17/+55Why are Americans such drama queens?
- NihilFist, on 06/14/2008, -3/+39From the forums:
Satan *Constantly* Ignored By Google
It's really upsetting, how Google completely overlooks and ignores the Dark Lord, Satan. I mean, really. Where-O-Where are the clever, doodlely little Googlely images that are meant to be celebratory of the Supreme Lord and Master of All That Is Evil?
Well, I sure hope they remedy this mighty quickly, that's all I can say. *Plenty* of good, god-fearing, satan-lovin' Americans are just Burned Up by Google's affrontery! After all, what is God w/o Satan, I ask you?
Just a deity who comes across as some needy, codependent, always demanding attention, really. God Needs Satan and Google Needs to Honor Satan. It's really a devil of a problem that Google has Ignored Satan!
In the meantime, I guess I can be content with the alleged, so-called similarities between Satan's B'day and the Burning Man festival:
I'm still very upset, though. Google is being extremely exclusionary and deliberately discriminatory towards the Prince Of Darkness. I hope they will change this, soon.
http://fray.slate.com/discuss/forums/thread/138528 ... - Tenlow, on 06/14/2008, -4/+39Too bad your great point is invalidated by the last word of your comment. Also, google is an international company. What would you say if they celebrated Ngày giải phóng for Vietnam? I bet you'd ***** a brick, even though they're just trying to celebrate the thousands of men who gave their lives winning the Vietnam war.
Ignoring the majority to make the minority happy doesn't work any better than ignoring the minority to make the majority happen. You can either ignore everything offensive or be offensive to everybody. Otherwise people will cry foul. - roodammy44, on 06/14/2008, -1/+37To be honest, I would argue that the american political right hate america since everything they've supported while they've been in office has been against the american constitution (which I respect) and weakened american interests. Ten years ago the amercan empire was respected in most of the world, certainly in western countries.
Who gives a ***** about flag pins and doodles when you're ***** your own country over from the inside?
The american right should be up in arms over what's happened to their country, not squabbling over minor *****. - jonnyboy88, on 06/14/2008, -1/+34They use the same thinking as Fox does: "If we turn the title into the form of a question, we can't get in trouble!"
- dreamstorm, on 06/14/2008, -5/+39You have to wonder if these ubiquitous claims of "left-wing bias" are intended to shift everyone's thinking to the right. Do you think Google may, in the interests of appearing balanced, decide to add more "right-wing" holidays (whatever that means) to their doodle schedule?
Similar to how the Clinton campaign complained they were being unfairly treated by the media--while in fact the opposite was true, the media shortly thereafter increased their positive coverage of the Clinton campaign to correct this perceived deficit. - moosepile, on 06/14/2008, -6/+39Oy vey.
So, if I read it correctly, Google is bad for commemorating Sputnik, a scientific milestone that in some ways (unfortunately not all) crossed political boundaries, yet is a bad citizen of capitalism for not marking the political holidays of one particular country?
I realise that no matter how hard I try, Google marks my ass as Canadian and redirects me, but that doesn't mean they should create a 100 person team to create geographical markers for every event in the geopolitical world.
So are we asking Google to embrace our capitalist and free society (on paper) but bitch and moan at them when they maintain independance and freedom?
If the author is pissed about no Christ or Bunny on Easter, should not others be pissed about no Mecca logo and compass at every Muslim prayer time? Hindu references? Tom Cruise?
Complaining about the former Soviet Union is unfortunately becoming less easier to reconcile, considering the state of North American politics.
And in-case any more bitching is required, looking at the 2007 logos should suffice for recognizing political markers. - trekie1701, on 06/14/2008, -1/+33I know Google loves me why else would they give me free email, processor, data sheet, planner, weather, news, and oh course the best search in town. They don't do all that for ad revenue, they do it to love me.
- Smashery, on 06/14/2008, -2/+33It's become a sad world when you try to have a bit of fun, while raising the public profile of (generally) unknown people/events (how many people knew the date of the Sputnik launch until Google did that logo?), and get accused of "advancing the cause of godless communism."
And why do I _need_ someone to tell me it's Easter? - Disregard, on 06/14/2008, -12/+41If Americans would stop squatting on the .com domain and move to .us then sites like Google could localize as much as they wanted.
Then they could turn the logo into American Eagles draped in the Stars & Stripes soaring over Iraqi corpses for WORSHIP THE TROOPS day, like these right-wing blogs seem to want, without offending the rest of the world. - alexforcefive, on 06/14/2008, -0/+28It's becoming pretty common to complain of the BBC's "liberal bias". I guess Google has the same problem - the line of true impartiality falls sooooooooo far away from the conservative mindset, and the consistency of the message must seem like a conspiracy to anyone who doesn't believe it.
I mean seriously, how ***** up would you have to be to expect a global company with millions of customers to celebrate flag day? And then declare it a CONSPIRACY if the company doesn't? - Kyan, on 06/14/2008, -1/+27Actually, no, it's not.
- smashingmonkey, on 06/14/2008, -0/+24"Google consistently ignores patriotic American holidays such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day,"
Actually they did Veteran's Day last year...
http://www.google.com/holidaylogos07.html - jumanous, on 06/14/2008, -2/+26I think people are over thinking this. Google just doesn't want to alienate the millions of non-American users... particularly ones on the other side of the battle that the different holidays commemorate. I'm sure Google loves the freedom that America has given it to prosper and make one of the most successful global businesses.
- ralphthemagi, on 06/14/2008, -1/+22Welcome to the Internet!
- feliks2, on 06/14/2008, -2/+23I don't know whether to laugh hysterically at poeople like this or to hit my head against walls.
- jaxcs, on 06/14/2008, -3/+23Just to use the phrase globalist here shows how deeply you have drunk the cool aid. This is about doodles, not a UN agenda or even liberal policy. All that crazy talk about the WTO, the world bank, ***** and doublethink really shows how much you miss the point. These are doodles, just doodles, but unless you wrap yourself in a Capitan America costume, your patriotism will be questioned.
- Theli, on 06/14/2008, -0/+19"Even when Google commemorates Independence Day, Lopez has looked for hints of a clandestine liberal sensibility. Last year, she printed a comment from a reader who claimed that the American eagle on Google's logo was clutching olive branches—but not arrows, the symbol of America's military might: "I think they've gone with a remodeled 'peace is patriotic' bumper sticker. They just couldn't bring themselves to do something 'American' without making some kind of signal about current policy."
Huh? - inactive, on 06/14/2008, -1/+21Holy hell. That's almost as blatantly anti-American as that hand sign Obama was making the other day! Time to switch to Yahoo.
- Tarantulus, on 06/14/2008, -1/+20how about, ***** you, it's their logo, they can do what they like. if it seems to project a certain political bias, maybe that's because that is the political bias of the owners? maybe it's ok for them to do WHAT THE ***** THEY LIKE BECAUSE THEY ARE A BUSINESS, NOT A PUBLIC SERVICE INSTITUTION.... *sigh*
and the US wonder why they're so universally hated? being European I know little about US politics, and yet, somehow I hate the Republicans... especially RELIGIOUS republicans.
I have Christians friends, I'm cool with that, but I doubt I could ever be friends with an AMERICAN christian. - mitch37, on 06/14/2008, -3/+22Put perfectly, they can celebrate whatever they want.
- MacParrot, on 06/14/2008, -3/+22What I found interesting was that they chose "Veteran's Day" as an example of a day that Google should cange their logo or acknowledge it in some way since that day originally was called Armistice Day in recognition of the sacrifices made by all countries involved at the end of WW1. It was hoped that by remembering the death and losses suffered by all that another war would not happen on the same scale (good luck with that).
After WW2 and Korea, some bright mind decided to change that from being a memorial to all veterans everywhere to just the American ones. I have no problem with celebrating the American veterans and thanking them for their sacrifices, but it shouldn't have been Nov 11 - NecroSexy, on 06/14/2008, -2/+20To hate is a right in America. Call me when Google commits treason!
- inactive, on 06/14/2008, -6/+24And they like peace, the most un-American thing in the world.
- netdroid9, on 06/14/2008, -1/+18So's Microsoft and Apple, doesn't mean they have to bend over for any whim of the consumer.
- silfiriel, on 06/14/2008, -6/+23maybe they hate my country too, and Sweden. How come none of our holidays aren't doodled? The story deserves to be buried.
Google is used allover the world, considering the national holidays. And about the religious holidays, as far as I am concerned it's better not to add oil to the flames. - savagesteve13, on 06/14/2008, -1/+19Wow I didn't know Sir Edmund Hillary was a terrorist. The radical right teaches us something new every day!
