- iFrank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I love Digg. It's major problem, however, is that it was built as a social news site, not necessarily a social bookmarking site, so it lacks the extensibility and functionality that del.icio.us has in that regard.
I don't really see where you're coming from. You must not have much experience with del.icio.us. - vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I use Digg and del, icio.us together. I don't find Digg all that effective as a bookmarking utility, although I do use it a lot to find new and interesting things (as we all do). Whenever I find something that I want to have easy access to at a later time, I'll bookmark it in del.icio.us as well. When I first tried del.icio.us I was put off, but came around eventually. Digg and del.icio.us are two completely different services.
- cblalock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The Step 1, 2, 3 joke is still being posted? Seriously?
Come on now. - RockMyMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16I have tried del.icio.us and I think they really suck. I spend too much time on Digg to check the other ones out.
- wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7People use digg for bookmarking? I just use it to read and rate news stories.
- taron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Del.icio.us requires some tagging around and learning the stuff. It has its own network of friends, popular lists and such, too. It is another kind of pie, though.
- cruci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6digg's competition is slashdot and netscape, not del.icio.us
- JoyrexJ9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You guys really use digg for bookmarking???
It's pretty sucky as a bookmarking tool (but great otherwise). I'll stick with del.icio.us thanks. - Guipil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Who the hell comes up with the names of all those sites??
- eKstreme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, Yahoo has a really strong hand to play here. I wonder what they'll do with this in the near future.
But the real gem here is how popular Digg is. A single service with a massive gap over any other one. - pittbug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5At the bottom of the post click the link 'Social bookmark post'. That's eKstreme's Socializer script which helps you submit to a ton of SB sites, rather than having a big list of buttons.
- jimbocook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I really would have expected Digg to have an even bigger lead and I am surprised by the strength of Yahoo's properties. Thanks for the information.
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't think Digg was intended to be a bookmarking site.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5We need a Digg category
- mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Interesting that a story about the popularity of social bookmarking sites does not contain a single link to submit the story to those sites. Or for that matter... a link to any of the sites period!
- JeremyL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yea calling digg a bookmarking site is kind of a stretch.
- ScienceBlog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The page actually says the stats are most submitted to site, not social bookmarking per se.
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BTW, Digg is more popular than google? Because google has bookmarks.
- Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah that was surprising to me as well. It just seems so much slower than Digg but then again, I guess that could be what draws some people to it...?
- DrewClayton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm surprised Netscape is so popular. It's so bland.
- Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Remember, the report his showing the percentages as a percent of the whole. Digg has 120% of the submissions Netscape has. That's pretty impressive IMO.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2del.icio.us is a great service if you understand how it works. It is not by any means intuitive. Or perfect. I primarily use it as a place to store all of my bookmarks. I also use it to browse through other peoples bookmarks. I usually don't bookmark news stories, technology articles, or websites that I am only going to visit one time. Funny, bizzare and interesting stories are what digg is for.
- Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder how Yahoo Answers would stack up against Digg and the rest...
- wakaseoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It really bothers me that people confuse a social news site like digg with social bookmarking service (like http://blogmarks.net/ or http://del.icio.us/ or whatever).
No surprise then that so many stories on the front page are old "news"! - Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4how is this news?
can we please dispense with the self-masterbatory digg postings and actually find news or cool stuff..
this story is like saying Milk has be found to be the most popular thing to put on cereal - cruci, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Skitzzo: nice telling lies with numbers. Yes, digg had 120% of the clicks Netscape had. Or 20% more, or just 1% out of the total number of clicks counted - 5.6% vs 4.6%
How about this - Netscape only 1% less popular than digg!
Also true right? - System101, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1http://www.system-101.com
is using digg for bookmarking... - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've checked out del.icio.us and reddit and didn't like the interface much on either. I'm sure both are good services, but just not as accessible and user friendly as Digg.
Netscape I leave alone because of the whole "Digg rip-off" factor.
Slashdot is awesome, but I just don't have the tech knowledge to hang out there. - cruci, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah, digg isn't a bookmarking site like del.icio.us is.
I would be surprised if anyone uses digg to store sites they want to come back to, which is what a bookmark is right? - SeanEtCetera, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As a comparison of social networking sites based on sharing websites, I can see how digg could be on the top. But as was stated by others, I don't think it can be considered a bookmarking site, or at least not an open bookmarking site. After all, anything submitted should fit into one of the categories listed, and if it doesn't, it just shouldn't be submitted. What category would the blog of a friend fit in, or a webcomic?
@cruci: It's not Skitzzo who's telling the lies, but the poster on that site. Aside from that, I agree with you. Sure, digg had 20.9% more clicks than Netscape, but when that only comes down to the 1% of all clicks, that isn't as important.
@ScienceBlog: If the page is titled "Popularity of Social Bookmarking Sites 2", then it's about the popularity of social bookmarking sites even if "the page actually says the stats are most submitted to site, not social bookmarking per se." Even with that disclaimer within the post, the points you make should be attributed towards looking at social bookmarking sites. Another article using those values that shows just the social bookmarking sites that are not just social posting sites of limited topics (as I said, like digg), would be interesting though. - Cory70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Spell check? beyotch.......Biatch.....how uneducated is america?
- Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3yeah delicious isn't nearly as useful for me and netscape seems a bit slower (not as many members etc). Reddit is ok but I don't like the interface soo... here I am.
- sicc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Step 1: Write up a report on digg.
Step 2: ?????
Step 3: Profit! - JimmyCrackdCorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.dugqmirror.com

What is Digg?
