- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The two sites work on different philosophies that revolve around how to determine what news stories are relevant. Ultimately, this affects the success of the site and how useful it is.
Not that there is anything wrong with either philosphy mind you - they each work better for certain types of things and they both have their place (I use both sites as well). I found it interesting to see the metrics though. - groovepapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One flaw - the site doesn't take into account stories that appear on one and not the other, so it's only comparing the overlap articles. Digg has at least a very slightly different focus than /.
I personally prefer digg over /.
digg ~ wikipedia
slashdot ~ britannica
imo anyway - roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The two sites are different, the quality of the stories on both sites are different as well. Slashdot does have better quality stories because its controlled. Digg, does get the occasional good story but its off an on but it has its own originality. I enjoy both sites.
- nju0843, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1quick! let me go post this article on Slashdot!
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At least one of the stories is from Today. The one that Slashdot copied from Digg that is 2 days old :)
One thing you will notice is that when Digg misses a story, it is by a few hours. Slashdot's misses show up much later. - nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It hasn't been updated in 2 days...
- GMTao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with mtrisk. Slashdot and Digg are two different sources. There is overlap, but they are not the same.
- tpimental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a pretty cool concept... digg
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah something is fishy. I remember the $100 laptop on Digg, then I saw it the next day on Slashdot. Hey at least we know where the stories really come out first.
- cptmorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and it never ends...
- j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who cares...
- digg - jmz668, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a waste of time. Why do you care? It doesn't matter. AT ALL.
- sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So is that the timestamp that regular Slashdot users see the article, or the time that the paying Slashdot users see it?
- mtrisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Somebody's trying to artificially create friction between digg and slashdot. I frequent both, personally.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why don't you guys whine some more? Gosh, this stuff gets so old. If Digg never does anything more than this, its due to the horrible community.
- jhaitas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the concept is flawed... they don't have a bot monitoring the headlines... it looks like it's done 100 % by people... they need to have a bot that monitors the url's and then crosschecks it with the headlines and teaser... this was posted by a slashdot user... i'm reporting it as lame...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great Site
+digg - Joe_rigby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apparently pro slashdot with the discrepancies
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me, or are the times a little off?
For example, on the Tinfoil hats article, it looks like Digg had that one first when I look at the timestamps from the articles. - jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*care*
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shut up about this already! Damn! This like the fiftieth post on d -v- s and it's pointless since digg is fill with nothing but fanboys and fangirls(the reason why I'm here and not /.)
- ipearx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With slashdot, the "time posted" is the same as the time it appears on the front page. With Digg, the "time posted" is when it was submitted into the "digg for stories" section. The story might not appear on the front page for a while after. Is that right? Assuming you want to know which is better at posting to the front page first, basing the points on posting time is not fair.
- nju0843, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0somebody else post it...i can't figure out how to post on /. !!!
- roadies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is brilliant. Although a bot would be cool.
I'd also expand it into tabbed categories: Apple vs. Apple (but potential wordplay pun would = no digg), Games vs. Gaming, Linux/Unix vs. Linux, etc. Yeah, bring on the bot.
(also, the dudes are or are not /. subscribers, which might explain why the times are off, they should at least tell us what they are comparing here). - eschatonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmmm. I considered submitting this awhile back, but when I clicked submit I saw a bunch of dupes and chose to DIGG one of those instead of cluttering the DIGG area (that's what the page asked me to do). I guess those dupes got deleted or something, weird. It still seems to be here, though (this is the one I DUGG):
http://www.digg.com/links/Digg_vs._Dot:_The_debate_returns...
I'm not cryin' dupe or nothin, just mentioning it. - robweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is pretty interesting, especially when broken down week by week. you'll notice that when "all results" are displayed digg does come a head, however from week to week slashdot usually sneaks by by a few extra points.
- TheStooge1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I Agree Bluestarr!
Now let me tell you why Linux kicks the crap out of XP... and why Fedora is better than.... (and the daily cycle begins. Thus is the circle of life)
hehehe
Variety... the spice of life. - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The algorithm is obviously broken. Slashdot is ahead of us.
- BigDumbGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In defense of digg, I think it only includes the stories that make it to the front page. A better measurement would be comparing diggall to /. Either way, Fark cliches are fun to use on both sites.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe@tehstoogey
- apollo2011, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't anyone remember this site was linked on digg almost 2 mths ago? no digg.
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well obviously the person who made it cares/is entertained by it, you don't like it? Fine, but what people enjoy is subjective and people are different most people realize that aged about 5 years old, I'm sorry you missed such a vital part of your development, I really am.
- Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love both Digg and Slashdot very much, there is no need to compare them like this, they are both awesome.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jesus... looking at your dugg history shows us why digg is in such a poor state.
Adios, Jesús ;) - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You don't think its automated? It looks like it only matchest stories with identical URLs on the front pages. Its apparently been tracking for 3.5 months now - if its not automated, the site owner sure is persistent.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg unless the site owner automates the process... and another big 'who cares' about this penis contest.
- gwdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0another chapter in the digg users wanting to puff up their chests again.
I will reiterate what someone else wrote.... Who cares? - Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gwdigg completely agree with you. Too many stories about "Digg is better then /." lately. I read both daily, both are good. Everytime i see a digg> /. story my opinion of digg goes down a bit
- sysera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apples and oranges. Move the ***** on.
- Twenty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now which one has more dupes?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid, worthless site. Who cares???
- iammike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its hard to compare Digg articles, because something maybe posted to digg at a certain time that looks like it beats a slashdot article, but in fact it may not make it to the front page of digg until after slashdot has posted it. How do you determin the real winner in that? While an interesting concept pitting the sites against each other is a flawed idea.
I look at both. Each has stuff the other doesn't. I like having more than one site to look at!!!!! I don't want just one thing. - Staggx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who is this helping? What significance does it have? Its fun to look at for about 1 minute. Taking 45 seconds to read what it is and looking at the info. Thats about all...
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg and Slashdot have overlaps because they are both (primarily) tech news sites. What's far more egregious is ripping off articles from Boing Boing, which has happened several times in the past two weeks.
- TheStooge1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Perhaps we should compare the quality of the black-eyed-pea vs. the common snowpea...
Now whilest the snowpea is not unpleasant to look at, it does lack the contour and color range of the black-eyed-pea. Too many black-eyed-pea's can give one indigestion, and the snowpea does not require an accompanyment of a broth. But in my humble opinion, BLACK-EYED-PEA'S KICK THE CRAP OUT OF SNOWPEAS! - drysz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read both sites, who cares. No digg.
- jorgevargas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this shoulnd be you cant compare diferent thigs.
1st the time posted is diferent as some1 earlier said, so digg will always come ahead, since it;s post time rather then publish time
then you got the fact of editor, i know you will all say "thats why digg is better", but it isn't, sometimes crap goes to digg frontpage, i have never seen crap in /. A recent example that Gnome vrs. KDE article it isn't a good review.
at last as many have said, they r 2 diferent things and eachone is good for what it's worth. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0someone should do this for delicious vs digg
- b00tsauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is ridiculous. Enough of this Digg vs Dot crap.

What is Digg?
