blog.digg.com — We’re excited to launch the new Comments system – we’ve listened to your requests and feedback and have incorporated many of your suggestions.
- 9193 diggs
- digg it
- k9unit, on 05/15/2008, -162/+3270its a nice improvement!
- theright, on 05/15/2008, -21/+559Check out this new, improved nested comment!
- fcrow, on 05/15/2008, -5/+180How far will the nesting go?
- fcrow, on 05/15/2008, -5/+149Just testing...
- tdskate, on 05/15/2008, -2/+80pretty far ...
- rune420, on 05/15/2008, -10/+288Looks like this is the end of the road.
- Sofi4n, on 05/15/2008, -33/+6Let's try this system out...
- SeaweedWater, on 05/15/2008, -14/+58test nom nom nom..ooohh 5 min to edit
- loww, on 05/15/2008, -21/+14brick wall :(
- toonworld, on 05/15/2008, -12/+5and going
- traphik, on 05/15/2008, -7/+11moo
- Seaseme, on 05/15/2008, -11/+3:(
- Istrancis, on 05/15/2008, -4/+18No no no, NESTING, he said nesting!
/jk - SpectralSounds, on 05/15/2008, -1/+98I'm hiding in here.
- consoneo, on 05/15/2008, -9/+169I want more colors, or borders, or something! It's not easily separable to the eye. Mine anyway :/
- theaceoffire, on 05/15/2008, -14/+4Nifty!
- IvanB, on 05/15/2008, -3/+12Don't mind me. :o
- slonkak, on 05/15/2008, -20/+85Geez. This is still ridiculously AJAX heavy. Why can't you just load the comments without AJAX?
- Modestexcuse, on 05/15/2008, -1/+22I am just here testing the nesting. No need to get testy.
- maxwashere, on 05/15/2008, -1/+22zesty
- YourRealFather, on 05/15/2008, -7/+1I think he said it would only go up to 4.
- ufia, on 05/15/2008, -3/+64What's with the five words per line text wrapping? I have a lot of blank space left on my monitor, Digg is free to use it, you know.
- JusticeFriend, on 05/15/2008, -4/+19ITS A TRAP!!
- mechnoch, on 05/15/2008, -2/+5Not sure what you're talking about "five words per line". Looks fine in Firefox.
- bluto36, on 05/15/2008, -3/+6too bad it wont let me make any comments
- DubBucket, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7Hrm.. why can't I reply to these?
- thisissami, on 05/15/2008, -0/+13"You've reached the max depth for commenting in this thread. Please post at a higher level."
it tells you that if you try to reply to any of the messages from the above subthreads... - NoahK, on 05/15/2008, -3/+2Apparently, that's as far as it goes...
- chromerium, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3I can't reply to every thread. Its *****.
- DubBucket, on 05/15/2008, -3/+4testies.. testies.. one.. two.. three?
- Ralphy, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1test
- RedS0x, on 05/16/2008, -0/+12This is quite messy, I think I need more separation between the comments.
Is this a captcha? darn. - aboyd, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4mechnoch, ufia means that he/she is seeing very narrow columns. He wants the comments to expand so they are as wide as his browser window. As I mentioned in a later comment farther down this page, there are Greasemonkey scripts to collapse the sidebar. Have a look at userscripts.com (search for digg) to see all the cool stuff that Greasemonkey can modify on digg.com.
- unleashedlive, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1burp.
- garethkeenan, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4If this is as far as it goes, then a thread ends with the first poster having the final say!
- fcrow, on 05/15/2008, -5/+149Just testing...
- teh_techie, on 05/15/2008, -8/+9HOORAY FOR TESTING!
- snide, on 05/15/2008, -3/+2Test Monster!
- theaceoffire, on 05/15/2008, -0/+17Testing to see if they fixed the issue with linking where having punctuation on the end messes it up:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4M8nX0qRZbc. - blahpro, on 05/15/2008, -0/+16Alas, no :(
- vanscott, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4I think I like it
- futureb, on 05/15/2008, -5/+20this broke the script for Digg Rating Extender.... :(
- centran, on 05/15/2008, -0/+33turn it off and then click on the digg count for the comment. -> +134
That will switch all comments to show +1/-1 like the rating extender did... But I do prefer the look of the rating extender. - neaveru, on 05/15/2008, -0/+23Aww they stole my idea
Digg guys, just send me an email and I'll let you know where to send the check ;) - Ostermayer, on 05/15/2008, -4/+3the tabbed replies are really nice. classy work digg!
- Ostermayer, on 05/15/2008, -4/+2just tabbing in again
- synystar, on 05/15/2008, -3/+2giggety giggety...testing
- aboyd, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4neaveru, I hope you'll update your script. I've already started updating all mine.
Yours is still useful. I do not like the way the new system requires me to toggle back & forth between showing the total score and showing the up/down counts. Yours showed both at the same time, and was better looking. Now that Digg includes both bits of data in the page, you could revise your script to use the data in the HTML -- you don't even need the API anymore.
- centran, on 05/15/2008, -0/+33turn it off and then click on the digg count for the comment. -> +134
- t0x2c, on 05/15/2008, -27/+11410 times slower than the old code!
- 1807, on 05/15/2008, -44/+6I love how you know that it's exactly 10 times slower...what a rounded off number. Maybe it's 3 maybe it's 7 or 4 or 6 but no..it's exactly 10 times slower than the old code.
- cawpin, on 05/15/2008, -17/+6No it isn't. It's 10X faster.
- trickyt, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2testing more stuff with editing... cool 5 minutes of edit time.
- iChainsaw, on 05/16/2008, -3/+16It's sooo slow! I have a really nice internet connection and before the comments just appeared with no load time, but now it takes forever :(
- cojerk, on 05/16/2008, -2/+4The delay load is confusing, especially if I had already started to scroll and read comments. The post load comments throw off my position.
I think I'd rather have a one-time up-front page load than some fancy AJAXy load.
Still, it's a pretty impressive feat.
- themastersb, on 05/15/2008, -0/+40Still some issues with causing browsers to hang.
- PyroRaver, on 05/15/2008, -6/+3testing
- ccaazz, on 05/15/2008, -2/+20nice, but more blue please, making the comments all white is a little bit of a washout! - asside from that though, great job *thumbs up* :)
also, the page doesn't reload with any indication of whether or not i have dugg up or down a comment, so as im sifting through the comments on this page, i keep being told that i already have dugg the comments, which is a little annoying.- t0x2c, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4Really? It does for me... what browser are you using?
- KingGorilla, on 05/15/2008, -2/+23This new system scares and confuses me
- MtheoryX, on 05/16/2008, -8/+4who the ***** is micah?
- stalman, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1I don't get it.
- fcrow, on 05/15/2008, -5/+180How far will the nesting go?
- Eucolastic, on 05/15/2008, -145/+6NIEC
- KMye, on 05/15/2008, -1/+22Maybe would've been a good time to test out the delete comment option...
- Handonam, on 05/15/2008, -17/+1i now know you had absolutely no diggs and 27 buries since i commented
but i feel bad for you, so i'll dig you up :9 - UltramegaOK, on 05/15/2008, -3/+26............................................________

- CDWMobile, on 05/15/2008, -17/+6Sure, looks nice but obviously still some bugs. It seems to have lost one of my recent replies. My profile shows two replies to the latest Co$ wikileaks drama, but the new system only physically shows one of them.
- dillacom, on 05/15/2008, -6/+1can I reply to replies?
- pika, on 05/15/2008, -2/+4no
- teh_techie, on 05/15/2008, -3/+2Do whatever you want. This system is built for US, THE DIGG USERS!
- aldenhg, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5But can we have long threaded conversations like a real comment system or is it still crippled to a limited number of parents/children? We should test this.
- theafroguy, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1This is the limit, sadly.
- camster91, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1yes u can!
- jus1haz2, on 05/15/2008, -6/+1Wow this is SOOO much better!! :)
- p5ych0, on 05/15/2008, -3/+48If you bury a comment, it collapses the whole thread, so you have to go back and manually show the comments to continue reading. Very tedious!
Also there needs to be an option of defaulting to showing the diggs and burys of the comments, instead of changing it for every story.
- dillacom, on 05/15/2008, -6/+1can I reply to replies?
- rpi22, on 05/15/2008, -5/+156Unfortunately, it still ***** up the links i posted when i go back to edit my comments!
- Rauby, on 05/15/2008, -16/+27It looks ... sexy.
Edit: And it is fast too.- trogdoor, on 05/15/2008, -10/+2Did you type '\n' or is that a bug? ( Note that the 'slash n' I put earlier in this comment may be stripped out ) Edit: Wow, backslash escapes can really screw things up, I did not put backslashes before my quote marks... Could this be used maliciously?
- ligyron, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2No
- Rauby, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Indeed. There are still some little bugs.
- trogdoor, on 05/15/2008, -2/+3'
- ufia, on 05/15/2008, -2/+3
- diggdiggerid, on 05/15/2008, -0/+9Thousands of sites operated by single people figure out how to allow comments to be posted with backslashes without fear of SQL Injections yet a multi-million dollar company can't.
- trickyt, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1--- .... err I tried adding <--- but it didn't work (it worked this time because i wrote it as <.
- trogdoor, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1This is a * * * * * * * test.
- trogdoor, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1This is another * * * * test.
- vault, on 05/15/2008, -1/+9I'm not sure how I feel about the looks just yet...it seems out of place. At least it's faster.
- parkermauney, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2test esthdafkfs
- PvtJenkins, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1testing as welllzzzzzzz
*edit* Oh nice edit time :D raworrr - caramba420, on 05/16/2008, -4/+2It IS sexy. I want to lick its vagina.
- starquake, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Am I supposed to test it here?
- trogdoor, on 05/15/2008, -10/+2Did you type '\n' or is that a bug? ( Note that the 'slash n' I put earlier in this comment may be stripped out ) Edit: Wow, backslash escapes can really screw things up, I did not put backslashes before my quote marks... Could this be used maliciously?
- AceTracer, on 05/15/2008, -3/+78Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with all the time I save from the faster comment system.
- panteradactyl, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2Anything from the Dominoes commercials that they do with their 30 min.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/15/2008, -6/+14Am I the only one who misses the little animations with digging someone up/down or when opening/closing threads? For example, when you dugg up/down someone they'd fade away and then fade back in. Or when you opened/closed threads, the slid open/closed. Now they just appear. I guess you could argue it's "faster", but it really isn't. Meh, not the best comment system if you ask me. Still YEARS better than slashdot though.
I'm happy to see the new edit times are much longer! And you can undo your diggs! - titorTT, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2And I now just have to figure out what to say :/
- BearinG, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Read more articles?
- OwdenBowden, on 05/15/2008, -21/+16Nice but a tad bit slow and confusing. Wish the settings were just ported over.
- OaklandNative, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6Yeah. I already miss the setting that automatically shows the comments and the first layer of replies. Now you can only choose between "All threads collapsed" and "Show all threads"
- vault, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2lol what's confusing about it?
- Jholder112233, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Kevin said the first thing we'd notice is speed... Not so sure about that.
- jtjdt, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3How do you see how many times a comment has been dugg down?
- aboyd, on 05/15/2008, -0/+9Click your "+1 digg" text. It's a link that switches it between two modes -- showing the total or showing how many up/down votes you got.
- jtjdt, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Fantastic! Now I can see that when I got "-1" digg, I actually got "+4 / -5" !!
http://digg.com/design/10_Mistakes_in_Icon_Design_ ...
- Philbert, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3I just noticed that you can only click the "# Replies" link to see replies. If I recall you used to be able to click that entire line.
- jer2eydevil88, on 05/15/2008, -7/+23This is a VAST improvement. Unlike the last update I see far more compliments than complaints :-D looks like they hit the nail on the head this time!!
- kidcodea, on 05/15/2008, -2/+3test
- aboyd, on 05/15/2008, -0/+29I agree that it is an improvement, but I don't agree that they hit the nail on the head. There are still some big issues. For example, if you have it set to expand all levels and you're viewing this in Firefox right now, go up to the top of the page and click to any other place on the site. Watch as the browser hangs for a second, then pops up the warning, "A script on this page is taking an unusually long time." Then you have to kill the script to move on. I've reproduced that on multiple stories with lots of comments. Expect that warning to become a typical part of using Digg.
Also, try going to the bottom of this page after a fresh load. Watch as the bottom of the page keeps moving lower, due to the way they fill in comments. If you want to add a fresh comment to the end of the page, good luck. You'll need to wait a while.
Also, go to your profile and view your old comments. Pick one where you posted a reply nested deep in a thread. When the page comes up, try to scroll around. You can't. Somehow the browser prevents scrolling until all the comments are loaded and it auto-scrolls to your own.
Lastly, load up this page (again, with "expand all" enabled) and then try to add a reply to a post near the top of the page. The browser gets so busy expanding all the comments that typing in your reply takes forever. There are tons of little half-second hangs while comments load. Since a long page (like this) can take many minutes to fully load up and be done, it makes snappy interaction prohibitive for quite a while.
I still like it better, but let's not give the Digg coders the impression that their work is done. I still want less suckage.
- badfrog, on 05/15/2008, -6/+139It didn't freeze my browser while it loaded, so I say two thumbs up!
- Lassan, on 05/15/2008, -5/+40I gave you two thumbs up by digging you up, then burying you, then digging you up again. That counts, right?
- gurm, on 05/15/2008, -7/+6It did for me on a big thread. I'm running FF3B5 on a new MBP, so hardware is definitely not the issue.
- eminem213486, on 05/15/2008, -7/+2this seems way faster than the previous way of loading comments.
- ozid, on 05/15/2008, -17/+781i dugg you, removed my digg, dugg you down, removed that, and dugg you back up.
nice.- Modestexcuse, on 05/15/2008, -0/+44I did the same to you, but lost track. I don't remember if I'd like to digg it or not.
- isaactwito, on 05/15/2008, -3/+14Discovering that made me so excited!
- funkytaco, on 05/15/2008, -2/+18Nerds.
- j1w2d34, on 05/15/2008, -7/+4Ya I dugg you up then down then up again.
- rajkalex, on 05/15/2008, -10/+5Still sucks that there is no total Diggs number. To me, there is a big difference between at +1 with a thousand votes and a +1 with 1 vote. I really expected this to be added in.
- aboyd, on 05/16/2008, -0/+10Huh? Isn't that what you get when you click the "+1 digg" text? It shows the totals?
- Jibberwalk, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1@ aboyd: Wow... that is so snazzy, I didn't even realize that.
- aboyd, on 05/16/2008, -2/+5Jibberwalk, want to see how to break it? Try this. Click it so that the up/down totals are shown. Notice that it changes all comments, not just the one you click. Good so far? OK, now give someone a thumbs up or thumbs down. Notice how it sets the comment back to the single total showing one summary number? So that's not the view you asked for. You wanted thumbs up/down counts. Now click it to change the view. It shows thumbs up/down, but turns it off for ALL the other comments!
Sloppy programming! - freqk, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1@Jibberwalk, seems fine to me :)
- aboyd, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1freqk, assuming your reply actually was intended for me, no, it's not fine. I created a video to show how to break the digg rating views. Here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYm2ijol0iA
So yeah, there's proof of how to get the new system to work improperly. - ozid, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1BTW clicking on links now opens them in a new window (or tab)... finally.
- defaultdigger, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4add the 'best digg has' X thing.... cool
- defaultdigger, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2.....and 5 mins to change comment.....cool
..... and the time ago thing.....cool
Thank you digg coder people. - defaultdigger, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Uh yeah. that's it. And the time ago thing was there before. I suck. Digg me down.
- defaultdigger, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2.....and 5 mins to change comment.....cool
- isleshocky77, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Click on the digg count of the comment
- defaultdigger, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1eh?
- defaultdigger, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1how deep do the comments go??????
- matrixbandit, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2So can you remove your comment after you posted it?
- whatsthatsmell, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1try it. or did you already, and you just reposted it?
- bowe, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1yeah, you can but you have to click edit and then delete. I would have liked to just see a red x somewhere, but it's definitely an improvement.
- kiensoy, on 05/15/2008, -3/+18I dugg you down just for testing.nEdit: ewww there is an ugly scrolling of comments that confuses me.
Second Edit: It seems for each "return" it shows slash n n - Konstantino, on 05/15/2008, -2/+35I really like the new system. That said, a couple things bother me just a bit. One, now that there's no ugly box around threaded comments I sometimes get a bit confused. Also, I can't see the replies to a buried comment without showing that comment again (an issue we had when the old comment system came out).
- richlizard24, on 05/15/2008, -1/+8Also, when you go from "only mine" back to all comments it automatically collapses all of the comments.
- richlizard24, on 05/15/2008, -1/+8Also, when you go from "only mine" back to all comments it automatically collapses all of the comments.
- zaii7, on 05/15/2008, -14/+4hear hear!
- Zyphon, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6Looks a lot cleanernnGood worknnEdit: Unfortunately, it still takes a day and a half to do the comment animations... Is there a way we can turn them off?
Heh, apparently editing a multi-line comment screws up formatting and all newlines are replaced with 'n'- telepheedian, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1The comment animations are instant, in the newest beta of Firefox 3 anyway. It was the first thing I tried. :P
- op12, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I'm not getting instant animations on FF3 beta 5 even on a fast connection. Obviously this story has a ton of comments, but it's annoying waiting for all of the nested levels to load and repeatedly resize the length of the page.
- telepheedian, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1The comment animations are instant, in the newest beta of Firefox 3 anyway. It was the first thing I tried. :P
- skeletorcares, on 05/15/2008, -4/+58except for they crash Opera.
- random19, on 05/15/2008, -1/+29Why buried? The update is crashing my Opera too...9.5 Beta, and identifying/masking didn't help.
- Ilikebikes, on 05/15/2008, -0/+25Yep, crashes my Opera also. v 9.25
- FuckThaMeme, on 05/15/2008, -21/+8Haha. works flawlessly in the latest Firefox.
- cesclaveria, on 05/15/2008, -3/+9your point being?
It is not like it is crashing some forsaken, old and buggy browser (like IE6)
but one of the major browsers around, used by a lot of people who are digg users and revenue bringers. - skeletorcares, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4actually my backup browser is firefox, and i just went through some crazy jumping up and down and up and down to get to my comment. i'm not so sure about this......
- cesclaveria, on 05/15/2008, -3/+9your point being?
- docsavatchniya, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2does look and feel nice...in mozilla...i, too, am an opera user-my main browser...seems to work well with seamonkey, though...
peace...
doc - lijamez, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7Also crashes the Wii's Opera and locks up the entire console :(
- JackBiller, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1lol rly
- mooninite, on 05/15/2008, -1/+10Newlines and quote marks seem to have display issues.
Testing.
This "quote" works? Single 'quote' works? Edit: maybe it's after edits? Edit2: Firefox 3 b5 on Linux seems to be unaffected.
Also, the amount of scrolling the browser has to do when loading is annoying. - SpectralSounds, on 05/15/2008, -1/+146Its really white.... That's for sure.
- Cronikeys, on 05/15/2008, -2/+26*Testing if posting Office quotes still works*
Angela: Congratulations, Phyllis. You look lovely. Your dress is very white. So white my eyes are burning.

- beezn, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1wow this things movin
- paperclipsNsoup, on 05/15/2008, -0/+28The only (and yes really the only) complaint I have is without the line down the left side, it can get confusing how far into a thread your in, especially if you have more than one 'replies' opened. Also (not a complaint, promise) it seems that when I tried to reply to this thread, it opened every reply on the whole thread. Bug? or was it just me.
Other than that, great improvement.- BTraina, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8yes i agree, i find it difficult to see whats a reply and whats a separate comment. But overall looks nice.
- RobotBuddha, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Same complaint here as well. It really needs some color coding or the like.

- bj1989, on 05/15/2008, -1/+15The new comment system allows for a whole new topic of discussion:

- SpikeX, on 05/15/2008, -11/+3What is this, eBay?
Oh wait, it's not. A--.
- fadetoone, on 05/15/2008, -4/+49Am I the only one that thinks the comment layout could be wider? This screen is set to 1024 and it's covering barely more than half the width of the page. Are diggers still viewing web pages with 640? Seems like the use of real estate could be more efficient.
- misterjangles, on 05/15/2008, -0/+12I 2nd that. though i wonder if ad blocker is blocking a tower ad on the right..?
- fadetoone, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5Good call... completely forgot about that...
- mechnoch, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Yeah, there are two ads on the right column near the top of the page.
- aboyd, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2fadetoone, today I revised my Greasemonkey script that collapses the sidebar. It has a side effect of expanding the comments. I won't put a link here, since Diggers hate advertising. However, my profile has a link to my Digg scripts. So if you or anyone else really hates how the comments work, you should be able to find a fix. :)
- iliketokick, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6If the page is wider, it will make comments more difficult to read. Text is easiest to read when there are seven to ten words per line.
(Google it. It's true.)
- misterjangles, on 05/15/2008, -0/+12I 2nd that. though i wonder if ad blocker is blocking a tower ad on the right..?

JK this is ***** awesome! - xptweakerntn, on 05/15/2008, -3/+6I agree, but I must admit that I was FINALLY getting used to the other "new" one!
- DarkDx, on 05/15/2008, -1/+13YOU'VE REACHED THE MAX DEPTH FOR COMMENTING IN THIS THREAD. PLEASE POST AT A HIGHER LEVEL
So there's a reply button in there in the thread, but it doesn't work, why put it in there in the first place, it's ANNOYING. - astrosmash, on 05/15/2008, -5/+20I disagree. While they seem to have addressed some of the more glaring problems with the old system (e.g., the inability to locate your own comments/conversations) they also managed to make the whole system even more buggier, and worse overall.
After the last comment system debacle, they should have fired every last one of their developers who was associated with that abortion. Clearly that didn't happen and this "new" comment system is just more of the same crap.- Angostura, on 05/15/2008, -2/+16I'm not sure about the sacking part, but I have to say that this an extremely nasty commenting system. If anything I prefer the previous one.
- misterjangles, on 05/15/2008, -5/+3if you ever get a chance to meet any of these guys and see the crazy scaling issues they deal with - I don't think you would say that they should be fired.
- Murdats, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3the digg comment system used to work well back in the day, however they have offloaded server side processing to client side, and made the whole thing less smooth and more buggy in the process (hell im having to wait for this textbox to catch up to my typing)
- StaticThunder, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6DON'T COMPLAIN OR THEY'LL REVISE THE COMMENT SYSTEM AGAIN!!!
Pages jump around as the load, edits don't get saved properly, pages take even LONGER to load. Good job. I'm finally happy. I don't want you to change the comment system ever again. - chromerium, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3The reply button should be in the same place, always. But we have a reply button on the left and the right.
- bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -1/+1I disagree. This system is definitely much faster and doesn't lock up my browser. That's an improvement that was needed.
There will always be bugs in every software/release, but these minor bugs don't necessarily make the comment system "worse overall".
- pault107, on 05/15/2008, -2/+14It's real slow to load the whole page - slower than the old system - but pretty funky once it's loaded. Being able to see digg downs is nice.
Edit: Well, at least I've got five minutes to edit my post so I can say - WTF? When I submitted my post the whole page randomly starting scrolling around. I had to do a search to find this post again and edit. That is a a major bug. FireFox 2/XP
Edit 2: The same thing happened when I submitted my last edit. Submitting comments is pretty unusable for me at the moment.- kmg90, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3thats what I was worried about
- sephiroth4, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1My token apparently was invalid to reply, so I logged in and here I am! ..eheh, posting on DIGG!
- raynar, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6It needs the outline feature to help group comments.
- Fordi, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1Hooray for asynchronous processing! No more locking up as stories load!
- UltramegaOK, on 05/15/2008, -1/+12ƃƃıp ǝʌol ı
- orvl, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Awesome feature:
The ability to click "Thread" and view all subsequent replies to any given comment when not viewing chronologically.
Something to work on:
Clicking "expand all" resulted in 50% of my C2D cpu being hosed for more than 2 minutes. Changing one's mind and clicking "collapse all" only results in a reverse of the same process. I think there should be a stop button of some sort so you can be in the middle of expanding and stop the process altogether and move on to something else. As of right now the only way I can see to stop the process is to refresh the page. Not very profesh, I must say. - SolidSnake24, on 05/15/2008, -5/+3It's a MASSIVE improvement!!
- Kratos76, on 05/15/2008, -5/+12I just dugg you Up! Then down, then up!!

- unleashedlive, on 05/16/2008, -1/+6I like some of the improvements, but not others. I think colour separation would be nice. I like the bg colour when a friend has dugg a comment. I don't like that a comment thread will close if I digg down the original post. If I open up the replies to a comment, I don't read through all of them before digging down the original comment, I like to read them after digging them down.
- Mooinakan, on 05/16/2008, -3/+1I'm impressed. The video was nice but damn, this is really well thought out.

- TheXeno, on 05/15/2008, -7/+2I'm merely posting this, simply in celebration of a new comment system.
The following was the greatest comment ever (taken from reddit):
"I was trying to make the same point this weekend to a friend of mine at my local bar. He disagreed and we got a little loud. This douchebag with four popped collars came over and started screaming "I can haz nerd fight". My friend got up and smacked him in the mouth. The douchebag's girlfriend got up screaming, "this is a neighborhood bar." My friend yelled, "neighborhood bar? This is SPARTAAAAA!" and pushed her down. All hell broke loose and we all started throwing punches. So, I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and said, "You're going to live with your auntie and uncle in Belaire".
Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_moia-oVI- kingvik, on 05/15/2008, -1/+18 million views and counting. Could this become the most viewed video in internet history?
- Skrezium, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Have you ever visited the "Most Viewed" page on YouTube?
http://www.youtube.com/browse?s=mp&t=a&c=0&l=&b=0
What a fag comment.
- PlagueOfMorons, on 05/15/2008, -3/+121) The new system hangs my browser and takes 3 minutes to open up a thread with 400-500 comments! But it also takes 1-2 minutes to open anything smaller too.
2) Screen display TRUNCATES user names! Looks like it only handles 10 characters then cuts off rest of name!
3) the claimed functions don't all work under Seamonkey browser.
4) Edit Comment has awful latency problem - you make an edit and it just hangs for varying times up to 5 seconds.
Would Digg please learn to adequately beta test before shoving code out? New version has hammered us with terrible performance.- antdude, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Same here in my SeaMonkey v1.1.9. :(
- tms8707056, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2Get a real browser. I hear that Firefox is pretty good.
- PlagueOfMorons, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1@tms: Uh, FAIL. You completely fail to understand Firefox is crippled compared to the rich set of controls in Seamonkey. When I'm browsing, I want to be able to disable many features of the scripts on webpages. Firefox is for noobs and the masses, it's deliberately limited in these features because that makes it easier for noobs to use. Seamonkey is more powerful but it doesn't like crap code like the Digg mashups. Furthermore, even Firefox runs into many of the same general problems with the new Digg.
- Terr01, on 05/15/2008, -2/+7Issue: There are duplicate "reply" effects.
There's the "reply to this thread" with arrow, and then there is the "reply" under the digg up/down buttons.
In some cases cases they do the exact same thing... It's just a general interface design issue.- Modestexcuse, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2The reply on the right is for posting a comment directly to that comment, whereas the reply on the left [Reply to this thread] is for posting a comment on the thread or to nest the comment.
- Cloud7654, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5I was taken aback when I opened a story and saw the new comment system. It'll take some getting used to, but it certainly looks much better than the previous.
- staffell, on 05/15/2008, -0/+9I commented, then deleted the comment to show off that I could, but then I realised the supidity of my actions.
- lukas88, on 05/15/2008, -6/+4I wish I could delete your comment too
- lukas88, on 05/15/2008, -1/+16It would not hurt to add some color to the top bar of each post, so as to make them visually distinct

- Migito, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1holy crap! I used to think that everyone on Digg was a bunch of ignorant, God-hating atheists who were completely close-minded about anything but their own beliefs. Going back to a lot of old articles with this new system and seeing exactly how many buries and diggs close-minded comments got proves that about 1/3 of Digg still has its sanity. Awesome. Now you people won't be so confident about your stupid ideas since the presence of the non-kool-aid-drinking minority will be shown...
- tama00, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2I always find if you have a different opinion and make a post about it. The people who disagree digg you down, yet the people who neither agree or disagree dont digg you up and the people who agree digg you up. So if your opinion is different to that of the mean audience of the article then your post will be buried and no one will get the chance to see your opinion which is really what makes the internet so great!
I personally dont believe your post should be hidden once it reaches -4 diggs, its just stupid because if the first 4 people disagree with you then no one reads what you have to say! Your post should always be viewable no matter what the digg is and if it is just rubbish then there should be a spam or offensive button to make it hide it. Let free speech prevail !
Like just looking down on some of the comments on this page. One guy has 50diggs and 70 burys. 50 people thought that was interesting and it could of changed his or hers opinion. yet slightly more think it wasnt. Why should his post be hidden? It still made a difference to lots of people. Isnt that unfair.

stretchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - pault107, on 05/15/2008, -4/+15Hey, who dugg me down for pointing out a bug? :D
- Fordi, on 05/15/2008, -6/+2A shame. I didn't want to - experimentation being neat and all - but I had to digg down this comment to fix my browser. Don't do it again.
- Tiak, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2While I'm repeatedly replying to myself:
Diggs seem to update weird. My profile lists 7 diggs 5 replies for the above comment... I click to show it and see 1 digg and 4 replies... (Of course, this will make it 5, but that isn't the point...) - ub3rgeek, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1some overflow: hidden; would be nice... Or a word wrap but the other way is faster.
- iamtad, on 05/15/2008, -1/+27It would be cool if the more diggs a comment got, the darker the background became...
Overall greatly improved :)- musicbear, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Or perhaps being able to set colors for most diggs / friends / my own comments etc... good idea!
- chrissku, on 05/15/2008, -0/+14 "We’ve added a new ‘Controversial’ sort that highlights comments with the most divergent ratings from Digg users"
This feature excites me the most. - quadvods, on 05/15/2008, -1/+13Still not better than the comments back in the day when you could view 10+ pages in your browser with all comments showing without major system hangs. Its still very slow.
- DeathfireD, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5ya and the design was more appealing back then. Now where bombarded with text that seems more cluttered. Someone needs to create a stylish and/or greasemonkey style for the new comment system. My eyes are bugging out.
- directrix13, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1This system is very fast and smooth in Firefox 3. I love it.
- specialK16, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1No it is not. The other one (v2) was faster in Firefox 3 for me at least.
:( - musicbear, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1So far in FF3 on the Mac it's A LOT faster and it hasn't hung.... yet... :-)
- quadvods, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1even when loading ALL nested comments?
- specialK16, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1No it is not. The other one (v2) was faster in Firefox 3 for me at least.
- jmpeagle, on 05/15/2008, -1/+13except it now doesn't work for the Opera browser and I have to switch to Firefox so it doesn't boot me off
- venir, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4Same here. As soon as I go to load the comments on any page in Opera, it crashes completely. I don't mind using Firefox but you would think a tech site (at least what used to be one) would make sure their pages work in most major browsers.
- British0zzy, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5love the new 'controversial' sorting option
ALL HAIL THE DIGG ALGORITHM- raynar, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3are these comments dynamic, or is it just taking forever to get them all? Kevin does realize that constantly updating is going to make it as ***** as before....and its a bitch to read when its constantly scrolling
- Dylson, on 05/15/2008, -4/+19I CAN DIGG, THEN UN DIGG, THEN RE DIGG A COMMENT!!!!
- Fordi, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Neat!
- xelloss, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Lets see how this works, testing...
- Locke23, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4I like it a lot, but it's gonna take a little while getting used to
- Sarevok9, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Amazing update, and may I say on the behalf of all of digg.
Thanks devs, and ITS ABOUT TIME!!! - RedRoostered, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0
- dogatemypron, on 05/15/2008, -56/+7Digg sucks @$$! Bring it on freaks!
- theDrizzle, on 05/15/2008, -428/+53Awesome! But you got my hopes up last week when you were down for 2 days...But I must say, very slick!
- zackkitzmiller, on 05/15/2008, -14/+326I just tired to bury you, but hit the thumbs up instead. To my great delight, I was still able to digg you down!
- taradisiac, on 05/15/2008, -34/+3Why do people say "digg down"? Learn to english
- SeventhSon, on 05/15/2008, -1/+15I'm still baffled at "digging up". Seems impossible to me. Reminds me of the Simpsons "No, dig up, stupid!"
- Mizzike, on 05/15/2008, -1/+12On Digg, you can either be dugg up or down. It's the vernacular of this site. For example, this comment will be dugg up such that it will be the most popular comment of the entire thread. Or not.
- tetfsu, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Survey says..... Not.
- taradisiac, on 05/15/2008, -34/+3Why do people say "digg down"? Learn to english
- Protoss, on 05/15/2008, -3/+9Looks like they implemented the comment system last week, and just made it go live when they were ready.
- muslax27, on 05/15/2008, -0/+58Congrats on being the very first person buried using the new comment system!!!
- Totalchaos02, on 05/15/2008, -1/+21Hmm, if you digg or bury a comment it collapses the whole thread. I understand why it does it for buries (hiding the comment), by why for diggs?
- jb0nd38372, on 05/15/2008, -1/+18No matter how good your comment system, you'll always have morbidly bad commenter's.
- ZeNiTH456, on 05/15/2008, -10/+2There needs to be a way to take back a report...
- BN2L, on 05/16/2008, -2/+8Just practicing a digg down
- zackkitzmiller, on 05/15/2008, -14/+326I just tired to bury you, but hit the thumbs up instead. To my great delight, I was still able to digg you down!
- theright, on 05/15/2008, -308/+15In before other comments
- MSstar, on 05/15/2008, -1/+24lol, someone dugg you up
- theright, on 05/15/2008, -3/+3About time too! Oh, to make objectionable comments...
- SteveMax, on 05/15/2008, -0/+10Just noticed that the old behaviour of hiding all replies when you bury a comment. I actually liked this better when it wouldn't hide them; it's one extra click when you're browsing the page.
EDIT: Woohoo! Now you can still edit after reloading!!
EDIT2: well, looks like when you edit it doesn't escape some characters properly...
- pbone, on 05/15/2008, -5/+12yup. the bury button works great too.
- IDIGTHEDIGG, on 05/15/2008, -3/+5yep the bury button works better then ever :)
- stillasleep00, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Can the digg crew fix that next?
- topiKal, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2There's no fix for stupidity, unfortunately.
- RedRobinRed, on 05/16/2008, -1/+0Uhmm... I'm not ENTIRELY sure, but I believe the best cure is to vote. I know! Let's all vote that during the next 8 years now that us 'Eee-lectronic-Tree-Huggers' are probably going to be running the country for a while, let's kick out all the jerks and mean people (hey, I ain't mad at 'em, let them go visit France!). Then, we'll ALL be individually responsible for going to someplace where somebody needs some love and maybe a break for a while -- but you know, they've gotta be COOL man, but see, we go to like China and Myanmar (formerly Burma. Do you ALL GET that Myanmar used to be called Burma, but it isn't any more? Good.) and a whole bunch of us go down' Louisiana way and we get all of those people and we say "Hey, YOU'RE REALLY COOL. You look like you could use an e-Tree-Hugger hug. Couldya? Can I? And THEN, we can (whoa) _virtually_ click on the little digg button by their head by _really_ digging them! Uhhh. wow. Anybody need a hug? I do. Yeah. Cool. thanks man (click) on you too. Yeah. But THAT DUDE up there? He's OUT for sure.
- MSstar, on 05/15/2008, -1/+24lol, someone dugg you up
- zen53, on 05/15/2008, -23/+227Looking Good Digg! Congrats to the Digg Dev Team..
- bsolidgold, on 05/15/2008, -45/+92Digg me!
Bury me!
Digg me!
Bury me!
... do it.- yikiad, on 05/15/2008, -0/+18that's awesome. too many times i've meant to either bury or digg a comment and pushed the wrong button.
- TubbyCat, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1I like turtles
- samw1ns, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1if god was a website he'd be digg

- RedRobinRed, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0lol -- Good one! Gotta love a good pun!
- Garciat, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2Yup, they did a great work on it.
- unravelled, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4don't be too fooled, there is quite a bit of space for ads on the right hand side now
- idslite, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2What are ads?
- bsolidgold, on 05/15/2008, -45/+92Digg me!
- ligyron, on 05/15/2008, -27/+119I really like this
- endlessoul, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1Sorted by "Controversial," your comment is near the top. Why? Multiple digg down/ups?
- jjb123, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Just click the amount of Diggs he has to see.
- Solis, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1I don't see that option anywhere jjb123. Not very user friendly.
- MicroBerto, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3I think the controversial algorithm needs to be re-written. Right now if there is +7 and -6, it's marked as more controversial as something that's +60 and -40.
I think there needs to be a weighting for total diggs (up or down). The fact that something gets dugg a ton in both directions means that its inherently controversial. Just because there's not a margin of 1 doesn't mean it's less controversial. Hmmm...
- marx, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2and it's fast!!!
- sluddy, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1me 2

- zackkitzmiller, on 05/15/2008, -33/+11Not for me...
- rockinrimmer, on 05/15/2008, -1/+112Does for me, crashes as soon as it loads a page with comments on. Otherwise the new comment system looks good, but this needs to be fixed quickly
- DarthTater, on 05/15/2008, -13/+3Coudn´t be an Opera problem? After all interpreting code shouldn´t crash the application where the code is being executed.
- SSUK, on 05/15/2008, -1/+9It would most definitely be an Opera problem, since other browsers don't have this problem. However, since people use the browser and Opera updates generally don't happen on a site-by-site basis, it's Digg's responsibility to make the site compatible with the Opera browser.
Why doesn't Digg test this out in different browsers anyway? Surely they realise how popular the site is and that not everyone uses Firefox... - bjornski, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1It's happening to me in Firefox also. (versions 2 and 3).
After almost every single comment, I get a hung script and have to force-close the browser.
This has to be fixed ASAP!
- SSUK, on 05/15/2008, -1/+9It would most definitely be an Opera problem, since other browsers don't have this problem. - AppleMacStud, on 05/16/2008, -14/+2Solution: Firefox 3
- grunion, on 05/16/2008, -1/+10But then how will we know what features Firefox is stealing next? We HAVE to use Opera.
- MWeather, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Firefox 3 crashes, too. At least for me. Opera, and Konqueror, too. Haven't tried Firefox2 yet.
- bjornski, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Firefox 2 crashes too.
Every time I post a comment, I have to force quit the browser because of stuck scripts.
/I know I'll have to do it again after I hit "save reply"

Did they not even bother testing this?- MaxMWood, on 05/15/2008, -8/+16Ofcourse they tested it. Provide the necessary information so Digg can fix your problem.
- HigherLogic, on 05/15/2008, -0/+23If they did it wouldn't be crashing Opera. Tested and fails on:
1. Opera 9.5 (Kestrel build 2)
2. Opera 9.5 (Kestrel experimental build 9974)
They need to fix this immediately, can't even browse Digg and had to open up Firefox just to post in here. - Ilikebikes, on 05/15/2008, -0/+19Also crashes on 9.25 and 9.27 which is the latest non-beta build.
- HigherLogic, on 05/15/2008, -0/+23If they did it wouldn't be crashing Opera. Tested and fails on:
- SSUK, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6It's Digg tradition to update the comment system and have a browser not work correctly with it. I recall the last comment system update, Safari users had problems posting comments and replies for a while.
- WayOfTheIronPaw, on 05/16/2008, -11/+0If Opera crashes, then that's the fault of the Opera developers. So sorry. If your browser manages to crash the Digg servers, then the Digg developers will handle it, I'm sure.
I suggest you upgrade to the latest version of Opera.- Nedlinin, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7Cept both Opera 9.27(Release) and 9.5(Beta) crash with the new system
And, Opera is quite stable - This is the ONLY site that I visit that crashes Opera -- And it started with the new comment system implementation -- How is that an Opera devs fault? - WayOfTheIronPaw, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5@Nedlinin: I can't reply to your comment directly because we've hit the limit of nesting...
I'm a software developer. As a software developer, let me tell you that a program should not crash on ANY input, whether the input is correctly formed or malformed. When software crashes, it indicates serious problems, such as corruption of memory (stack or heap) that may indicate EXPLOITABLE SECURITY HOLES. For example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffer_overflow
If it does crash, then that is most DEFINITELY a problem for the developers. It is in your best interest not to use software that is that flaky.
I put the question to you whether a small minority of Digg users - those who use Opera - should be able to dictate the experience of the site to the majority - those who use FF or IE or Safari? Should Digg hold off on improving the site until the Opera developers fix their buggy browser?
Digg me down as much as you like, if it makes you feel better. You're still wrong.
- Nedlinin, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7Cept both Opera 9.27(Release) and 9.5(Beta) crash with the new system
- MaxMWood, on 05/15/2008, -8/+16Ofcourse they tested it. Provide the necessary information so Digg can fix your problem.
- Terr01, on 05/15/2008, -0/+27Opera 9.27 crashed once for me, but I have been unable to reproduce the problem.
Instead, the page loads the comments (I see them for a split second, marching down the page) and then they all disappear, folded up, and I cannot expand them to make them visible.
The area that says "Collapse all", "Only Mine", "Only Friends", etc. is directly next to the blue "Show 51 - 90 of 90 discussions" bar.- Jellyhead365, on 05/15/2008, -2/+5I get the same problem you mentioned, using Opera 9.27.
Other than the fact it doesn't work properly yet, the new system seems good. - venir, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6I just upgraded to Opera 9.27 but it still crashes as soon as it starts to load the comments.
- Sverre, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Exactly the same happens here with Opera 9.24.
- J0415, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Crashes immediately for me, using Opera 9.23 and 9.50 beta.
- Terr01, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Hey everybody, I think I know why it crashes Opera.
It is the same reason it crashed Firefox.
Depending on how you visit the page, it will not show "0-100 of 1800" (as shown in the blue bar). Oh no, it will load the ENTIRE 1800 comment thread on the page!
Additionally, what the heck is up with Firefox? I can not use the single-quote character because whenever I type it here in this box it pops up quick-find text searching. And arrow keys do not work inside this text box either, I need to click to move the caret.
- Jellyhead365, on 05/15/2008, -2/+5I get the same problem you mentioned, using Opera 9.27.
- dsmx, on 05/15/2008, -41/+11Switch to firefox then, no problems so far.
- theparadox1083, on 05/15/2008, -2/+13Opera is Acid2 compliant. Firefox 2.0 is not, though 3.0 plans to be.
- dood, on 05/15/2008, -6/+5Opera crashes based on what it reads from a web page. That should not ever occur.
I'll take non-Acid2 compliance over browser crashes. - HigherLogic, on 05/15/2008, -1/+4Opera also supports HTML 5, Firefox does not.
- shawn1122, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5I wouldn't say the crashing is Opera's fault, more likely the developers. If the browser is made and debugged for Firefox and Internet Explorer then there may be one little snippet which could crash Opera, which really shouldn't be hard to fix I am guessing.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anyone is at fault here, its not a big deal since it should be fixed soon. The comment system looks absolutely superb in Firefox, huge improvements over the previous one. I can't wait to start using it with Opera. - dsmx, on 05/16/2008, -2/+4And as we all know the fact that firefox 2 isn't acid 2 compliant is really hurting the experience for the user.
- dood, on 05/15/2008, -6/+5Opera crashes based on what it reads from a web page. That should not ever occur.
- theparadox1083, on 05/15/2008, -2/+13Opera is Acid2 compliant. Firefox 2.0 is not, though 3.0 plans to be.
- Echomote, on 05/15/2008, -0/+18Same, running Kestrel Beta 2 in Leopard. Actually glad that it wasn't only me.
- Goblin, on 05/15/2008, -2/+7Crashed twice and then worked ok. Will be interesting to see if the crashing is longterm.
- Echomote, on 05/15/2008, -0/+13Every time for me.
- dukeochutney, on 05/15/2008, -30/+6ff is superior
- Sysprod, on 05/15/2008, -5/+8No crash here, but I get the same results as Terr01 :(
- kaaresl, on 05/15/2008, -0/+269.50 Beta 2 without any previous settings also crashes. No plugins. Ubuntu 8.04.
- skeletorcares, on 05/15/2008, -14/+74I'll stop using digg if i can't use my opera (written in bland firefox)
- zongamin, on 05/16/2008, -15/+1***** brilliant. Please ***** off immediately.
- homeagain1, on 05/15/2008, -0/+13It doesn't crash with 9.5b2 here, but I can't digg or bury any comments...
Anyway, it's looking good so far. They just need to fix the bugs.- NiteShdw, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Same here. I can't digg any comments. 9.5 build 9981.
- danihell, on 05/15/2008, -2/+21Same here; Opera 9.5 Beta 2 build 9981. Windows XP SP2.
- sheep1220, on 05/15/2008, -8/+23Crashes for me too. 9.27.
I can has old comment system? - shawn1122, on 05/15/2008, -0/+22Crashes on the newest beta for sure, tried on both computers here. The comments sorta load in an unorganized form and then crashes immediately. Makes me wonder if it was even tested on the stable and beta releases of Opera...
- shawn1122, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7I dunno where this is supposed to go, hopefully posting it here will be ok:
About Opera
Version: 9.50 beta
Build: 9981
Platform: Win32
System: Windows XP SP3
Java: Sun Java Runtime Environment version 1.6
I wonder what is different for the people who have it working in Opera... - HigherLogic, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Obviously not.
- tonich03, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3this is my first time on the new system. Oh! I lasted so little!
- shawn1122, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7I dunno where this is supposed to go, hopefully posting it here will be ok:
- crapu, on 05/15/2008, -7/+57No crash here, but Kevin Rose showed up in my kitchen, pooed on the floor then left without saying a word. I'll see if I can reproduce it.
- mytealjacket, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0What does this mean? Hehe...
- MillionsLivio, on 05/15/2008, -0/+33Crashes for me too, crazy that they didn't test this before launching.
- zcreem, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Test!,test!, are you mad Sir, this is development 2.0 let the idiot users test, it's cheaper.
- SexyPopMachine, on 05/15/2008, -30/+5Get a real browser then.
- danqueca, on 05/15/2008, -2/+25Autocrash, i needed to load IE, and login to post this.
Bad QA - Flyer00, on 05/15/2008, -8/+30Doesn't work in Lynx either ... please go back to the old system :)
- habys, on 05/15/2008, -1/+10another vote for lynx support!!
- WayOfTheIronPaw, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Also, although it works with "telnet digg.com 80", it's not very readable. Please remove this newfangled AJAX stuff. Opera users have my sympathies. Clearly Digg should work on every browser, no matter how crippled and bug-ridden.
- Siraf, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Works in elinks just fine
- brownr21, on 05/15/2008, -42/+9Lol, Opera. Get a real browser.
- Maver1c, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5Lol, Idiot.
- brownr21, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Lol, *****.
- Maver1c, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5Lol, Idiot.
- renegadeafk, on 05/15/2008, -23/+3Works great in firefox 3 rc1
- stuffblock, on 05/15/2008, -1/+4Opera meet Kestrel, Kestrel meet Opera.
- tenspeedogbb, on 05/15/2008, -11/+5I LOL'd at the fact that every comment insulting Opera and/or praising Firefox has been buried below the threshold.
- Terr01, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Well, why not? Pretty much every comment like that has added absolutely nothing to the discussion, so...
- shadyrudy, on 05/15/2008, -1/+23Just fired up in Opera. Same issue. Crashed the whole browser.

Plug-in not loaded - Crusnik01, on 05/15/2008, -1/+15Same here, Opera goes straight to hellzorz...
EDIT: Using Opera 9.27 @ Vista SP1
Works fine on IE though.. But that's.. Well.. I think most can agree with me that IE shouldn't even count here.. :P
Otherwise, it's a great improvement! ;) Good job Digg! - j0hn33y, on 05/15/2008, -1/+17Crashes Opera 9.26 and 9.27 here on XP SP3 too...
Loads a page of comments, shrinks them all into a line and exits Opera. - secleinteer, on 05/15/2008, -26/+4People seriously use Opera? Wow.
- skeletorcares, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2'seriously.... wow' people still use that?
- Crozz, on 05/15/2008, -2/+18Crashes as soon as it tries to load a page with comments. Opera 9.27 .
This is bad, I'm not using anything other than Opera. I feel dirty when I had to launch IE to comment here :( - SpookyDIGG, on 05/15/2008, -24/+4No one cares Opera sucks, get a real browser
- grunion, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Funny you should say that. I remember the Netscape users telling me the same thing when I PAID for Opera because it had tabbed browsing. "Opera sucks, who would want all those sites on little tabs? They should be in their own windows."
It's as bright to say it now as it was then.
- grunion, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Funny you should say that. I remember the Netscape users telling me the same thing when I PAID for Opera because it had tabbed browsing. "Opera sucks, who would want all those sites on little tabs? They should be in their own windows."
- bg2500, on 05/15/2008, -4/+4Crashes for me to. I will just use Firefox for Digg. I already use Firefox for a few other sites anyway. Both are great browsers.
The new comment system looks great to btw. - xNaquada, on 05/15/2008, -13/+3Opera marketshare is so minute compared to IE or Firefox, heck probably even safari.
Its much more important to test against IE and FF then it is to test against OP, especially since OP and FF are both FOSS.
Stop whining, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. It will probably be fixed as soon as they can.- triblinator, on 05/15/2008, -1/+11***** you.
- domdunc, on 05/15/2008, -0/+10im sure you'd be saying the same if it crashed firefox but worked fine in IE wouldn't you?
- grunion, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7Yeah, let's just test against the two big browsers, not the innovative browser they take all their new features from that happens to always test as standards compliant.
- skeletorcares, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Opera 1.4. Safari 2.2. But safari really is the inferior product, despite which is shipped with a certian 'out of the box' computer that's somewhat-popular.
- Altanar, on 05/15/2008, -12/+12Sure, crashes suck, but it's more of a problem with the browser than the website. A well built browser should NEVER crash regardless of how a website is built. Fixing stuff like that via website hacks only breeds browsers like IE, where there's a browser specific hack for everything you need it to do.
That said, I'm sure Digg'll have a Opera specific hack soon enough.- ShadowdStranger, on 05/15/2008, -3/+16Hate to burst your bubble, but opera is the best in web standards tests.
- Terr01, on 05/15/2008, -0/+12I've had more crashes in IE or Firefox than Opera despite it being my main browser.
And when it does go down... well, it remembers all the windows you had open, so it's not nearly as a big a deal anyway. - Darkhacker, on 05/16/2008, -5/+4I don't know why you are getting dugg down. A website should never crash the browser; that goes double if it works in other browsers. This is an Opera bug, plain and simple.
- WayOfTheIronPaw, on 05/16/2008, -3/+3It's getting dugg down because it bursts the bubble of snide superiority for Opera users. The embarrassment of having a browser that crashes is too confronting for them, so they lash out at anyone who speaks the truth.
- bjornski, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Except it's not just Opera crashing!
FF2 and FF3 crash for me. Other people are saying Konqueror is crashing. I'm typing this in IE just to see if I freeze up after a comment right now, in fact.
So far, in FIREFOX, I absolutely can NOT post a comment without having to force-quit the browser.
So NO, it's NOT just an Opera problem. It's a DIGG problrm. - bjornski, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Test failed. IE crashed miserably also.
No add-ons loaded. No filters loaded. Just the browser and Java, and I crash in all three of them (FF2, FF3 and IE). I'm assuming switching to Opera wouldn't fix this either, from the looks of the comments.
/wow, this msg saved right this time (editing it again to test). FF3 currently
This instability isn't a browser problem, it's a scripting language problem. - Darkhacker, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Okay fine. Let's assume that it crashes every single browser. Guess what? It's still a browser problem. There is a kind of programming mantra which states that user input must never crash an application.
For example, when you first start programming and you create a "guess the number" game, your next assignment right after is to make your program not crash and burn if the user enters a string, instead it simply repeats itself, "please enter a number" until a valid integer is entered. Any programming teacher worth ***** will have you make this modification for your second assignment.
The same thing applies on a more complex level. In this case, the input is HTML and Javascript. Neither should ever cause the browser to crash. It should never happen. Even if it gets stuck in an infinite loop, you have that "end script" dialog in Firefox. If you seriously think it's acceptable for any kind of HTML or Javascript to crash or hang a browser, go grab a fruit rollup and a juice box and let the adults deal with this. Real programmers understand the idea that input shouldn't crash a program.
This isn't about being a fanboy or evangelizing a browser. If any browser crashes upon visiting a page. It's a browser bug. Now, the problem mainly appears to be Opera, although some of you have reported crashes in other browsers. What if it worked perfectly in every single browser except IE? You would rant and rave and blame Microsoft. You would do your absolute worst to pin this on them. However, because it's Opera and not IE, you blame Digg. That is hypocrisy.
- FrankTheTank17, on 05/15/2008, -1/+14I was pissed at the same thing but don't worry, it's probably a good thing that you can't read Digg comments anymore. =X
- DippaH, on 05/15/2008, -1/+20Opera Users:
Go to: Help ---> Report a Site Problem
- Better make the Opera development team aware of the problem aswell...- jeffthejiff, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7Not possible to do that, because once the page has loaded up, Opera crashes before you get the chance to open the menus.
- NDfan0788, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Just open it from a blank page... mine gives me the option to do that before any windows open if Opera was not closed properly.
- jeffthejiff, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7Not possible to do that, because once the page has loaded up, Opera crashes before you get the chance to open the menus.

Doesn't look so good- palta38, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4funny, that link completely killed firefox 3 beta 5 on my pc, but unlike opera i cant reopen firefox because it crashes again as soon as i start it
- ZeNiTH456, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Works fine in Firefox 3 beta 5 for me :) as does digg comments.
- Zaggynl, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1lol @ ads

- Espenhh, on 05/15/2008, -0/+11Would be great if it didn't crash Opera.. And IE uses resources like crazy too, so this thing is defiantly heavy...
- cyanxx, on 05/15/2008, -0/+9I even signed up an account in hope to fix this crash (so this is my first post! *hello world* ) cause i thought that was the problem as it collapses the comments up instantly. Didnt work of course.
Opera 9.24 - Maver1c, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Crashes for me, really really annoying. I have a lot of windows saved and tabbed when I load opera, some of them aren't diff related, which means that I can view those pages until digg fixes this.
- jeffthejiff, on
