- jezsik, on 07/15/2008, -3/+50I wonder if those traditional news sites will attempt to sue Digg the way they sued Google for sending them traffic. Some organizations just don't "get" the internet.
- homah, on 07/15/2008, -3/+42The gap would still be 50% if they properly categorized the Huffington Post as an entertainment site.
- jfdolier, on 07/15/2008, -0/+28Wait...we're seeing an increase in news posts during an election cycle? How bizarre...
- TheFounder, on 07/15/2008, -2/+20Kevin might as well put a "for sale sign" as the logo with all the changes being done to position itself as a way for Microsoft to find the internet...
- Ovalteen, on 07/15/2008, -2/+17I think the most interesting thing is that the amount of traffic to both types of sites has declined compared to earlier levels. Traffic to news sites is back to June '07 levels (the spike in April 08 was probably US democratic primary coverage), but entertainment site traffic has fallen considerably in that time. Where is the rest of the traffic going? Has traffic from Digg dropped overall, indicating users have moved elsewhere? More info would be good.
- djHBRD, on 07/15/2008, -2/+14So 6 months ago everyone was bitching about the lack of real news, and the prevalence of videos and stupid images linked on Digg, and as soon as submissions become a tad bit more intellectual the ***** starts up again?
You people are impossible to please. - djHBRD, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1021.3 * .03 = .639
21.3 - .639 = 20.661 ~= 20.7 - sockpuppets, on 07/15/2008, -6/+14............................................________

..................................., - LDubs48, on 07/15/2008, -1/+7no doubt algo-influenced, and frankly a smart move on Digg's part to make it more viable and lucrative for a potential sale. their plan seems to be working out.
- D3koy, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6What happened in April? I'd wager something Obama related, though I can't remember...
- ProjectGSX, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6What a shocker. More links to news sites during an election year.
- acormon, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7I for one am glad more and more people are turning to the Guardian instead of the trash they try to feed us in the states.
- Cerialthriller, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5i just love those eye-opening dailymail articles
- chaos7, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5digg will get sold around the same time that average thinking idiots take over this site. then a more underground site will grow that has more intelligent users.
- Diggnabbit, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6How is the difference between 21.3% and 20.7% a 3% gap?
- Diggnabbit, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5oh... well, there you go That makes sense!
- christopheles, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5No *****. With everything else morons start screaming "Blog spam."
- nevetssav, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4The "traditional news media" spike starts near when the democratic nominee race got really interesting.
I'd be willing to bet that the "traditional news media" decreases substantially after the end of the election, while entertainment stays level or increases. - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4and the daily mail.
- lensman00, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4The Chicago Tribune has a "Social Media Coordinator". Their stories go front page a lot more often these days.

Digg username: acmaurer - techguru2006, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4It's a smart move for Digg to push traditional sites. As a major Digg user, I'm personally tired of getting shouts for Adsense-driven spam blogs hosted by blogspot.
- zadadka, on 07/15/2008, -4/+7Oh please.
Next thing you know, Diggers will be assigned responsibility for 9/11. - grindmygears, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3That's a bit of a shock. Not the pushing bit though. Too much iPhone ***** has been pushed on here the past week or so.
- stealthc, on 07/15/2008, -3/+6There's always Slashdot.
- waseem, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2It's all thanks to the "Digg This" button that most traditional news websites now have on each of their articles.
- auto98, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Ah yes teh MSNBC rule - if you do a list, put every individual in a box which you then have to click to see the next one. Instead of putting it all on the same page. *****.
I was just wondering how much more entertainment sites are willing to pay in advertising - it would be more than news sites etc wouldn't it? - clharlem149, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2wait, what?
- anaesthetica, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2I'm not a tremendous fan of U.S. television news, but our main newspapers (NYT, WaPo, and WSJ) are all quite good.
The Guardian's work is not of any outstandingly high quality, and its editorial (and news coverage, for that matter) bias is even more apparent than in the U.S. press. - burnerz, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2I thought that 80% would have gone to blog spam, it seems to.
- Mpwns, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2digg isn't really a tech news site. its more like a 24 hour news channel that's updated with info faster than anyplace else. before digg i used to go to like 4 news websites for info, but here I'm looking at many web sites on each page with some info and how many other people read it. and with digging we get a better picture of what people really care about so we don't have to read or watch the parts we don't care about. digg is the future of news.
- ender7074, on 07/15/2008, -3/+5Theres only two kind of article on digg anymore. A hyperliberal rant/tabloid link or a link to cracked.com, break.com, or other entertainment site. Real news doesn't appear here.
- levelred, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3i didn't say digg was a news site but a clearinghouse!
clear·ing·house /ˈklɪərɪŋˌhaʊs/ [kleer-ing-hous]
–noun, plural -hous·es /-ˌhaʊzɪz/ [-hou-ziz]
1. a place or institution where mutual claims and accounts are settled, as between banks.
2. a central institution or agency for the collection, maintenance, and distribution of materials, information, etc. - JKAL, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3I think you are underestimating those companies, they definitely get the Internet now.
Although this data is from a not so trusted source, I believe this time it is right on the money.
noticed lately that there are many front page articles from sites like forbes, nytimes, dailymail.co.uk, telegraph.co.uk, time, nationalgeographic & some more (traditionally) print media sites.
and these articles are being promoted by some very well known Diggers sometimes 3 or 4 articles from the same site a day.
Either these diggers have been bought of or suddenly these sites are producing very read worthy articles.
I think it is the former and these big corps are gaming Digg to get the advert dollars, notice how most of these sites have the very loathed multi-page articles that could easily fit in 1 page. - levelred, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2make sense, digg is more of clearinghouse of news than, just one news site.
- minox, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2I always thought digg was a news site insofar as a "news site" means any website that posts news on its front page that is at least 12 hours old.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -6/+7who gives a sh*t?
- screamingjoker, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1where is this more intelligent underground site you speak of?
- krystalo, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Digg loves stories about Digg, but honestly, I just want more tech news. Why am I not surprised that this lame story came from TECHCrunch.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I imagine the overall volume from Digg is not well-known for that very reason and/or fear.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1More links to sites that Pay the bills.
- Ryan0617, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Wheres this 50% gap coming from? I only see a 10% gap.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1it seems dumber to me.
Please link to said "intellectual submissions" - anaesthetica, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I don't think this counts as a "*****." This is a third-party analysis. Still, despite the change in the balance between Entertainment and News sites, the article makes clear that the decline in Tech coverage has not been arrested. Digg is still moving away from its tech roots, regardless of the other changes in content.
- roket21, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2I must keep missing the news 'cause I never see any.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1more evidence digg is looking for a buyer
- ZenMojo, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2And Fox News. Thank God no one links the Drudge Report.
- dejanigma, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0This doesn't show any real correlations, theres more real estate on the web and the application space is a moving target. Expect things to constantly move as a consequence of a myriad of social factors and trends.
- scoottie, on 07/15/2008, -4/+4huffingtonpost.com is not a news site ..... well i guess is as much as the national enquirer is a newspaper
- d3dm, on 07/15/2008, -2/+2Oh sure, and while we're at it, let's claim that Digg will get Ron Paul elected, George Bush impeached, Microsoft bankrupt, and Steve Jobs knighted by the Queen!
- carguy84, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1Haha, TechCrunch referencing hitwise data...now there's some accurate information you can definitely go to print on!
