- justjeninsf, on 02/20/2009, -24/+345Hey all -
As always, we don't comment on specific accounts in order to protect the privacy of Diggers but I can say that we have no record of the emails in question here at Digg, and the features mentioned above (e.g. auto bury and prevention of popular stories) do not exist.
Thanks -
Jen - skersh, on 02/20/2009, -40/+355This article really seems to be taking these quotes out of context. I don't know the whole story but to me it comes off as this:
Digg: "you were being an ***** so we removed some permissions and killed your submission"
user: "OMG autobury algorithm! conspiracy! big brother! controlling the masses!" - Klak, on 02/20/2009, -56/+332this will never make it to front page
- freedomjoe, on 02/20/2009, -23/+256People, digg is a private business. You do not have freedom of speech here. You have to follow their rules. What he submitted was a gross violation of those rules.
This isn't the first time I've read someone complain of being unfairly kicked off, and then it comes out that they posted some really offensive material or threats to others. This isn't a kindergarten.
end of story. - maximilen, on 02/20/2009, -15/+174MrBuryMan

- justjeninsf, on 02/20/2009, -5/+118Hey atomicpoet -
Yea, no specifics, but I can say that folks are generally unhappy when we have to enforce our TOS.
-Jen - benologist, on 02/20/2009, -10/+114Most of the active users on digg just game the ***** out of it and exploit it. The harder digg cracks down on these people the better.
- AndrewDB, on 02/20/2009, -2/+93It just did.

..................................., - digitalpencil, on 02/20/2009, -5/+57whatever, this dude had a hissy fit, submitted some childish paintbrush sketch telling mods to ***** themselves and then in the first comment, admitted to 'gaming' the system..
***** nitmeh, ***** the powerusers.. i just don't give a *****.
personally i couldn't give a ***** about all this digital ego ***** where people want to get stuff FP'd to elevate their stats but it makes sense that the more people submitting articles, the more democracy within the system and the better the spread of original content.
honestly, i know people care about their 'popular ratio' but why would anyone give this much of a *****?
edit: Jen Burton apparently emailed the article author, informing that all correspondence on the page regarding an auto-bury list does not exist on their system..
***** this guy, have fun on reddit.. - atomicpoet, on 02/20/2009, -5/+56Without going into specifics, what COULD have set nitmeh3 off then?
- skersh, on 02/20/2009, -6/+57I did, actually. I was saying I don't have any of the background information in this, and no way to verify any of it being true. Up until the recent update, there was only one source, and it was this nitmeh3 kid.
If you bothered to click the link to the emails, you'll see that the kid was whining about the fact that he had been caught after being banned 3 times.
It seems as though the article took everything this one kid said at face value, inferred something about a secret auto-bury script, and then wrote some sensationalist article about it. - Slashered, on 02/20/2009, -37/+87While nitmeh's actions were way extreme, rude, and not at all helpful, it is troubling to hear that Digg can bury stories automatically, -and- say something like this:
“We appreciate your passion towards Digg and this is why we haven’t locked your account yet. But, unfortunately we would not to be able to feature you on the homepage anymore and prevent you from digging any upcoming stories though you can Digg Popular stories.”
So he wouldn't be allowed to digg upcoming stories, or have any of his submissions hit the front page, that's a bit *****. I mean, if you're going to ban all users who used scripts before (although Digg handled this whole thing extremely poorly as well), then follow through with banning him too, or explain to him the current situation without him knowing what was going on. If he didn't email he would have never known what was going on. - LiquidSpark, on 02/20/2009, -15/+64Wow... So much hate. I dunno. I love Digg. It's definitely one of the sites I spend the most time one.
- javaroast, on 02/20/2009, -13/+61I'm burying this as inaccurate as the title is way off. It looks as digg did everything possible to avoid banning him, and they probably should have just let the banhammer fly. Nitmeh earned his ban fair and square... banned before for TOS violations (at least 3 times), restricted for admitted TOS violations and banned again for acting like an idiot with his FU post. Since that time he's had at least 2 possibly 3 new accounts banned only proving that digg got the right guy. For all his talk about quality content his behavior shows pretty clearly that his interest in digg was only about playing the blind digg game. He could care less about the content, proven by the fact that digg gave him the chance to continue to use the site and his reaction was a temper tantrum. And I'll give you a hint: any time you see the term quality content realize that it is a buzzword used only by those playing the blind digg game designed to divert attention from the fact that they could care less about the content.
- justjeninsf, on 02/20/2009, -2/+47@atomicpoet (your follow up about TOS enforcement) -
There are different ways our TOS is enforced without banning (permanent or temporary bans). Some of them I can't go into specifics about, but some others include things like comment timeouts and limiting what we consider "abusive digging" (see http://blog.digg.com/?p=536).
--Jen - 11oops, on 02/20/2009, -0/+44WRONG. Digg should have autoburied your comment.
- inigomntoya, on 02/20/2009, -6/+49Whoa! Holy crap! You're right! I totally read your comment, and then buried it! Weird...
- nymphetamine, on 02/20/2009, -3/+42Woah there! What's this? Logical thinking? Don't go all crazy throwing around those facts around!
- shinythings, on 02/20/2009, -3/+35Ever notice how NOTHING hosted by blogger.com gets to the FP? Makes sense
- NegativeDigg, on 02/20/2009, -5/+37<<... I wish it would happen to me more often to give credibility to my name...
- shinythings, on 02/20/2009, -1/+32What does that even mean?
- xaeon, on 02/20/2009, -1/+28 The clue is in the name. His face, apparently, is a dick. Thus, Digg suck dick.
- atomicpoet, on 02/20/2009, -9/+35What ways do you enforce the TOS without banning members?
- Hockey13, on 02/20/2009, -1/+25Walmart respects its customers' wallets. People who shop there actively choose to give up customer service in exchange for low prices.
- dreambig207, on 02/20/2009, -3/+27Lets try and make it
- AManWithNoName, on 02/20/2009, -6/+30It's amazing that you instantly believe something that was posted on this guy's blog without any ounce of evidence. That shows some real trust.
- illegal_op, on 02/20/2009, -9/+32Mrbabyman proves there is an auto digg feature too
- jhandfield, on 02/20/2009, -4/+26Wow. Some people take Digg a little too seriously...
- Sucka27, on 02/20/2009, -1/+22Well don't you look like a horses ass!
- jkmyoung, on 02/20/2009, -1/+21I don't get what the hubbub is about either.
Idiot creates account. Gets banned. Creates several more, gets several of them banned. Acts immaturely. Gets buried.
I, for one, thank Digg for helping to filter submissions of known idiots and spammers. Otherwise front page would constantly have useless crap on it all the time. - inactive, on 02/20/2009, -9/+29nitmeh3 needs to grow up...
He probably is crying because he got banned from Digg. - chuckDontSurf, on 02/20/2009, -3/+22Why did I know as soon as I saw the title that it wasn't going to be anything like digg admitting to auto-bury? Just some guy claiming those are the emails that were sent to him.
- aknews, on 02/20/2009, -15/+34What does this example says about the whole concept of social media which means that the COMMUNITY choose what stories are the most interesting?
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -15/+34I think it was evident yesterday when the "Trader Buzz with Obama's Plan" had 500 diggs, over 200 comments in like 9 hrs, and never made it to the front page.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+19nitmeh3 admits what he did:
"...not letting us use their API (Diggboss script)..."
For those who don't know, Digboss is a script that automatically Diggs all your friend's stories for you. Digg has banned the use of this script. It would appear that nitmeh3 might have been doing questionable things on Digg, and if he was, he deserves to be restricted and or banned.

That link is from the article. - damonic, on 02/20/2009, -4/+22I would but it has nothing to do with Digg.
- TheVirus, on 02/20/2009, -2/+19Odd, the autobury seems to have missed this article. Maybe next time.
- artfuldodga, on 02/20/2009, -7/+24sure, what are/were 70+ engineers for then? lol in all seriousness ... you're going to have to fix digg sooner or later, its gotten quite retarded
- kingmanic, on 02/20/2009, -3/+19counter examples: Walmart ; Dominatrix ; Any womens magazine ;
- Uthman, on 02/20/2009, -12/+28This is some seriously jacked up stuff
- doiveo, on 02/20/2009, -3/+18I think an answer lies in making actions worth less the more you repeat them. For instance, if you digg more than 100 stories, the next digg is only worth 95% and keep decreasing the value of the Digg to zero around 3-400 stories. Then, if a user wants to use a script, go head, you will be doing nothing of value for yourself or your follows. Show this to people too... a punitive system is of no value if the perpetrator doesn't feel the pain associated with the action.
Buries are a tricky issue. It seems that once a threshold is met, the story stays down. This leaves stories subject to personal attacks. A community should be able to resurrect a story. Also, a "wrong topic" bury should vote to move the story to the right topic. It shouldn't count as a "ok, lame". It may now but we have no way of knowing since the bury system is a black box. again... broken association between behavior and result.
Auto buries have no place here at all however as it violates the fundamental purpose of the site where content is king. If the site isn't doing it, some users certainly are. Either way, it is the user being judged not the content and that serves little benefit.
Still, I have sympathies for Digg staff... for the amount of spam accounts I get on a weekly basis the volume of crap must so out weigh the good stuff. Fighting that must be a struggle - ShadoxPrime, on 02/20/2009, -5/+20This article looks like it was written by a 12 year old.
- NewsFeed, on 02/20/2009, -1/+16Yeah it seems that he was not actually banned. His whole complaint was that he felt he was being auto buried. He was only banned after requesting the ban. His account was able to submit the image about Digg so it does make one wonder what TOS you were carrying out.
- nullx42, on 02/21/2009, -2/+16I'd smoke with him, but he'd have to pay me a lot to do that. I'm not gay, but 20 bucks is 20 bucks.

- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -27/+40This will probably get 300 diggs and never see the front page.
