- Senn, on 05/18/2008, -12/+111Because more people have the old versions. It'd be a stupid business decision to focus on the currently smaller market. As much as I don't want it to, the situation is going to reverse sooner or later.
- dha07030, on 05/18/2008, -9/+83Ok we get it.
- crowbar77, on 05/18/2008, -5/+75Really developers would rather work with something they have 5+ years of experience with?
- lead2thehead, on 05/18/2008, -42/+106You are coming to a sad realization. Cancel or allow?
- Ocelot13, on 05/18/2008, -36/+97ok we get it. people like xp.
i like vista, ive had no problems with it.
i like how it looks, i like its new features, and guess what? if you arent running 5 year old hardware, itll run perfectly fine. if you have a decent computer, vista will run fine. - s0m31john, on 05/18/2008, -7/+51Developers? Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!
- aaabatteries, on 05/18/2008, -17/+51We don't care.
- smhTheory, on 05/18/2008, -6/+32This just in: People hate change, especially at work.
- Trixrox, on 05/18/2008, -3/+26Vista has a lot of good merits that need developed upon. I guess Windows 7 will change people's minds. Once again, these Vista stories are annoying, they're all the same.
- Danikar, on 05/18/2008, -2/+24If CLI is not modern why did Microsoft spend so much time and money developing the Powershell.
- lead2thehead, on 05/18/2008, -1/+18How does a command line interface make an operating system inferior? If you have a CLI, you can still make your computer work when your stupid wizard breaks.
- TopSlacker, on 05/18/2008, -20/+37Who gives a *****?
- Sage920, on 05/18/2008, -6/+21DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS
- batmanz, on 05/18/2008, -8/+23OK, we get the point, Digg hates Vista. Can we move on?
- max777, on 05/18/2008, -11/+26Im a developer, i prefer vista :( I like programming with glass.
- lonehunter01, on 05/18/2008, -0/+15Learning something new = work. Programmers/Designers hate work. At least I do.
- Agret, on 05/18/2008, -2/+15The XP drivers for my EPSON work perfectly under Vista. As do most XP drivers.
- sammykeyes, on 05/18/2008, -3/+14Well OS X does need a Mac computer (sold exclusively by Apple) just to run. At least according to what Apple says.
I'm thinking the baseline specs just to run OS X, are far more stringent than Vista. - Wang, on 05/18/2008, -3/+13Actually i've been seeing a lot more pro-vista comments these days :)
- Vector713, on 05/18/2008, -13/+23I guess I'm not part of everyone then, cause since SP1 for Vista was released, I'm not looking back.
- BlaenkDenum, on 05/18/2008, -2/+10Ignorance at its greatest.
- Midnightbrewer, on 05/18/2008, -7/+15What the heck is an "agile development technique"? Eww, corporate-speak. Versus the sluggish kind, I suppose. And yet they're still writing for XP. How ironic.
While target audience is obviously a main concern, one other complaint that developers have is that Vista allows less hacking, meaning that programmers have to finally start playing by the rules. This is a good thing. - Terr01, on 05/18/2008, -0/+7Spoken like a non-programmer.
A command-line interface is less intuitive but has a far greater range of expressible actions, because a GUI equivalent would need a a kajillion buttons and drop down menus to compete. And if the GUI had a text input box... well, isn't that just a "command line" again?
The right tool for the right job. And there's no reason that command-lines will be out of work any time soon. - oolatin79, on 05/18/2008, -0/+7can you provide an example of this mainstream (epson, hp, lexmark, etc...) 2 year old printer that is so outdated, that the manufacturer is unwilling to provide Vista drivers?
- mjpatey, on 05/18/2008, -9/+17I didn't expect the statistic showing Linux development to be 1% higher than Vista!
- jgtg32a, on 05/18/2008, -4/+10Don't be a *****.
- cquinnd, on 05/18/2008, -1/+8Depends on what you are doing, and your familiarity with the tools.
- markdall, on 05/18/2008, -1/+6Well, that's true - but it's not Microsoft's fault - my HP Photosmart P1100 doesn't have drivers for Vista - because ***** HP won't make them. Meanwhile, same printer, works great if you tell Vista that it's actually an HP Deskjet 1120C. By works great I mean it prints - I can't use the card reader built into the printer. But again, that's HP's fault and NOT Microsoft. HP would rather I buy another ripoff printer from them.
- MrViklund, on 05/18/2008, -7/+12who cares... leave the xp lovers behind when we other moves on.
- Carcass666, on 05/18/2008, -1/+6No developer who has his head anywhere outside of his arse is not going to lock an application to the most unpopular version of Windows since ME by utilizing new features of dubious value. The only thing in Vista that was seemed interesting was the Windows File System (i.e. a relational DB type of file store) which didn't even make it into the final product - of course, the Vista guys shouldn't feel too bad, it has been promised since "Cairo".
The same is true of Office 2K7 - the value add of availing a project of any new functionality in O2K7 is far outweighed by alienating all of the O2K and O2K3 users. - PolarBearCa, on 05/18/2008, -1/+6News Flash: People don't like to change things, especially if it is already working (from their perspective).
- KMartSheriff, on 05/18/2008, -1/+6And 90% are from people who have never tried.
- OrangeSoda31, on 05/18/2008, -2/+6Command lines are actually more efficient, speaking from experience.
- cquinnd, on 05/18/2008, -0/+5At this point, a "2" year old printer would have come out on the market at about the same time MS was lobbying manufacturers for drivers for such equipment. Most stepped up and delivered.
My Canon MP830 had Vista drivers available on their website about a month before retail release. And they even made agreements to upgrade some of the bundled third party scanning software. - Grummond, on 05/18/2008, -4/+8Problem is...Vista doesn't actually solve anything for me. It really doesn't improve on anything, XP is running great for me, does everything i want, and looks plenty fine.
So I'm sticking with XP. Might (might) switch to Windows 7 in a couple years, if there's something in it that makes it worth the hazzle. - kreatre2007, on 05/18/2008, -11/+15Well, whether they like it or not, Vista is the current OS shipping from Microsoft. I think Vista has some serious disappointments considering the hype surrounding it before its release but, the developers need to start making their software compliant with Vista so that the consumers aren't harmed. Not everyone buys a PC and then reverts to XP. Some people actually like having a new OS. I am no fan of Microsoft but, Vista is the current OS... not XP. Fortunately for me, I use a Mac :) Apple doesn't make crappy, third rate operating systems.
- brownr21, on 05/18/2008, -5/+9Ditto. ***** the old developers, we're dominating now.
- alpharaptor, on 05/18/2008, -6/+10microsoft has many resources, but foresight and innovation really aren't them. vista was rushed roughed out, and the zune was 3 years too late. they just seem to chase trends and rarely lead anymore.
- lead2thehead, on 05/18/2008, -2/+5My ass it's more efficient. I guarantee that I can work 10 times faster on the command line than you can with your GUIs.
- synik, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4That's a silly comment. Some developers happen to like creating visually appealing GUIs. It doesn't mean they are bad developers.
- bxblox, on 05/18/2008, -3/+7The survey says: the only round of family feud that matters is the last one.
- jhaks, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4An agile development process is a real concept. There are many different very well documented and widely used development processes. Agile is not always the best since documentation can be limited and more bugs could appear. When you have mission critical software such as phone switching software, air plane software or space probe software, being slow and meticulous is sometimes better.

I do agree that Vista does seem to be a better development environment since it is more rigorous and there are more facilities for developers to take advantage of. - letherial, on 05/18/2008, -0/+42 year old is not to bad, That isnt Microsoft, thats your manufacture. (not that im defending microsoft, just pointing out who is at fault here)
- duke, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4Well, just the opposite, actually. New computers come with Vista, and you wind up having to pay more for one preloaded with XP. Most people won't pay extra for XP, even if they prefer it.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/18/2008, -3/+7BREAKING: Developers prefer XP over MacOS
BREAKING: Developers prefer XP over Linux
No *****. - Planets, on 05/18/2008, -1/+5Whoever made that observation certainly has superior critical thinking skills.
- ByteGuerilla, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4It's not corporate speak, it's software development speak. And yes, it is as opposed to the sluggish kind.
- fuzzynyanko, on 05/18/2008, -2/+6Most XP applications will run on Vista anyways, so might as well have a wider audience
- jasmus, on 05/18/2008, -1/+5So, the news is developers prefer a larger market, and not having to do more training over a smaller market and some more training? I don't hate vista, I just don't use it, but is that really news?
- Dumbledorito, on 05/18/2008, -1/+4FTA: "Because of some well-publicized problems with Vista..."
Their link on "well-publicized problems" goes to a story about businesses having to eventually transition, not to anything that supports their FUD, like, say, a list of actual problems.
This article is deemed crapariffic, and was done so from a computer running Vista. -
