It's a pity - I like(d) Last.fm's services. Too bad they sold out (it was that or death by royalties; I'm not sure they shouldn't have gone down fighting). - circle26, on 05/23/2009, -12/+373FTA:
We believe Last.fm and CBS violated their own privacy policy in the transmission of this data. We also believe CBS and Last.fm may have violated EU privacy laws, including the Data Protection Directive, and should be investigated by the appropriate authorities.
And to the CBS employee who was fired and threatened based on this story - we believe certain U.S. Whistle Blower laws may protect you from retaliation from CBS in this matter. We’d like to provide you with legal counsel at our cost. - babylonian, on 05/23/2009, -24/+310Really? Trying to argue that your blog is a reputable news source while simultaneously titling your article "DENY THIS, LAST.FM"?
And your undeniable evidence starts out "Here’s what we believe happened"?
This is lame. - foolishwolf, on 05/23/2009, -14/+214Oh for christ's sake, is this ***** ever going to end??
- alexmuller, on 05/23/2009, -39/+184I'm still not believing it. TechCrunch is, was, and always has been *****, and until Last.fm comes out on their blog and admits to doing wrong, I'm sticking behind them. This article is nothing but a bunch of paragraphs starting "we believe..."
Arrington's 'proof' doesn't do it for me. - CardHockman, on 05/23/2009, -5/+88The RIAA doesn't care about French black metal demos, do they? I think I might be safe
- diggymow, on 05/23/2009, -16/+95TechCrunch is less reliable than just making ***** up. Also there is no 'proof' anywhere in this article at all. I 'believe' TechCrunch is just making ***** up for page views. I guess I should post that as news somewhere because apparently just believing something is all that's required.
In related news I believe I'm ***** sexy. - Kenelm, on 05/23/2009, -5/+75It isn't much of a problem. You're just submitting the tags of the files you play.
Maybe I just listen to blank MP3 files with tags that make it look like I have an impressive music collection... - Krumm, on 05/23/2009, -1/+65So let's say someone slipped a USB drive into your computer whilst you were out, and is able to see everything you're doing on there...
You didn't notice any difference, so you shouldn't be bothered either?
/Yes, I know you use a mac... doesn't mean you're immune. - tsp00n, on 05/23/2009, -25/+83I use lastfm alot.
and its a really cool concept they have with music
but i honestly feel really betrayed, my rights on the internet are waved away when the riaa see fit. thats *****. - kristoaster, on 05/23/2009, -13/+67I think we're all missing the point here, which is that if someone has pirated U2 then they deserve to get caught. You have an almost unlimited catalogue of music to pirate and you go for U2? Seriously.
- BoneheadFarker, on 05/23/2009, -4/+52Yeah...this kinda ***** requires Shiva.
- mysql101, on 05/23/2009, -2/+44Richard Jones, founder of Last.fm said this:
http://twitter.com/metabrew/status/1892316194
"busy sending data to the RIAA... Oh wait, no, that's still nonsense." - 4DFX, on 05/23/2009, -0/+38Don't forget to follow this thread on Last.fm:
http://www.last.fm/forum/21717/_/535934
It has not been confirmed yet, so we are waiting on for Last.fm to give a statement. - Brasolis, on 05/23/2009, -26/+60Not if your relying on Christ
- adnoiseam, on 05/23/2009, -4/+37It's pretty bad from CBS (not form Last.fm) if this really happened. On the other hand, Techcrunch isn't really the most trustworthy source around.
Anyway, I still support Last.fm. Compared to other comparables services (such as Blip & co), they are extremely often and supportive of small indie labels and artists. I've met some people working there, and they were both nice and musically literate. - phoomp, on 05/23/2009, -2/+34You believe Last.fm wouldn't hand over user data to the RIAA. Do you believe that *CBS* wouldn't?
- shinaku, on 05/23/2009, -16/+44The Last.FM devs are fuming at this one, it's total and utter bollocks.
Buried as inaccurate. - ryrocker, on 05/23/2009, -0/+28i hide my tracks by logging onto a proxy site through another proxy site... and then i go to logmein.com and use their remote desktop software to access a computer with an internet connection i buried in the park... and when im logged into that one i use another proxy site to download music, movies, and other misc torrents from torrent sites... and then i upload them to my server that is hidden somewhere i dont even know (i gave it to a homless man and told him to just run and then i payed a hit man to kill him so nobody would know where my server is... then i killed the hit man). when i want the files stored in my hard drive i just download them to my home computer... using a proxy of course.
- kafka47, on 05/23/2009, -2/+27Dugg for being sexy.
- rpgmakr, on 05/23/2009, -8/+32I guess we all owe an apology to techcrunch, must of us jumped in the bash-TC bandwagon when the story was denied, specially the TC-haters. For that, I apologize.
- Javindo, on 05/23/2009, -0/+23I'm just happy I live in the UK, where the copyright law is still ridiculous however it's never really imposed as much as in the US.
- gamepr0, on 05/23/2009, -5/+27prove
- Rapter09, on 05/23/2009, -0/+20Don't say that. They'll find some way to region encode music; be sure.
- lozzd, on 05/23/2009, -7/+27Thank you :)
- pagno, on 05/23/2009, -2/+21FTA, they are owned by CBS. Im holding my breath, but I seriously wouldnt doubt a corporation caving under pressure. Seriously, what legal recourse does anyone have in that, The damage is done. Its not like any legal precedent can change it.
- KiddKill, on 05/23/2009, -1/+20You are such a clever little boy! I mean to come up with a dig user/virgin joke, how absolutely clever.
- mason092, on 05/23/2009, -8/+27Why are you deleting your accounts? I really couldn't care less if the RIAA knows what I am listening to. Do you wear tinfoil hats also?
- WeirdEdsel, on 05/23/2009, -2/+20Not if his what?
- HareBall, on 05/23/2009, -0/+18Don't forget CBS is in the music business also.
- harryrick, on 05/23/2009, -2/+20You know, you don't have to believe everything you read. Especially a story with no hard evidence based on what the writer 'believes'.
- whatit, on 05/23/2009, -3/+21LOL you obviously have no idea how the "chans" operate (I barely grasp it either). I believe they'd tell you: "We are not your personal army". Go hangout in /b/ and get a grip on how that ***** really operates then come back to us.
- Barackalypse, on 05/23/2009, -5/+21Why are they storing IP addresses in the first place? That information doesn't do anything for them that cannot be achieved with just the user name plus the ISP or geographical information an IP address might provide. Also, for end users, proxy, proxy, proxy, make the IP address useless.
- ucbmckee, on 05/23/2009, -1/+17I'd rather not jam my wee. That's truly one of the worst site names ever.
- gamepr0, on 05/23/2009, -0/+16no, the RIAA is trying to get the IP adressed of people who listened to mp3 files with the names of songs taht weren't released at the time they listened it.
- MavRevMatt, on 05/23/2009, -0/+16That's TechCrunch for ya...
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -1/+15Yep, they'll do pretty much anything for *****.
- binaryecho, on 05/23/2009, -0/+14A lot of players "scrobble" your music playing data from devices. So let's say I play an unreleased U2 track from XBMC and have scrobbling enabled. The song you listened to and your IP get sent to Last.fm for metrics.
If you play it, and you CHOOSE to scrobble it, then they get the data. - inactive, on 05/23/2009, -8/+22I totally deleted mine. Why hate on Canadians? If a selective group has to pay, while others don't, thats ***** retarded. Everyone pays, or nobody pays.
- daronicus, on 05/23/2009, -0/+14I believe you are not. We are at an impasse.
- zsz7, on 05/23/2009, -1/+15what keeps them from suing you anyway, despite having no proof that any of the songs you listened to are pirated?
- limbride, on 05/23/2009, -0/+14That includes you too :P
- BaldMonkey, on 05/23/2009, -1/+15huh? Is this the jock part of digg.com?
- alexmuller, on 05/23/2009, -3/+17Where did they say that? Genuinely, did I miss something seemingly massive here? Sure, a "source close to Last.fm" said they handed it over. But never the company.
- MavRevMatt, on 05/23/2009, -1/+15And those copyright laws are totally irrelevant today, because of the internet. All it does is drive people towards piracy.
- sragland, on 05/23/2009, -0/+13um, this is the second time techcrunch has written an article attacking last.fm with no evidence
- alexmuller, on 05/23/2009, -5/+18Right now, I believe that Last.fm wouldn't hand over that kind of data to CBS. If it later comes out that they have, I'll be seriously disappointed and will have to reconsider my account there.
- redgiemental, on 05/23/2009, -1/+14Actually the countries that have to pay for streaming don't subsidise those that don't.
In the countries where it is still free it is still free because last.fm can get good enough advertising deals so they are able to cover all costs and make a profit on users streaming.
In some countries they don't have as good advertising deals and are not able to cover costs so it was either no streaming or paid for streaming.
Not exactly sinister. - dequo, on 05/23/2009, -2/+15yes before the cops come quick
- sebedard, on 05/23/2009, -9/+22techunch propaganda. buried as inaccurate
