- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Okay, now this is just getting ridiculous. Is this "Rip-off Digg" week?

http://digg.com/tech_news/South_African_Newspaper_s_unashamed_rip_off_of_Digg_Labs_Swarm - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Why would anyone care? They're using the voting system to let customers make suggestions for the company. Users aren't even submitting stories. They're submitting their own ideas, which then get promoted by other users/staff.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Having the ability to rank contents up or down is nothing new. Digg certainly did not invent it.
- gmark13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Uh hasn't Kevin Rose said he essentially copied (ripped off) del.icio.us.com when he started digg.com?
It happens all the time. Just people picking up on good ideas from other sites. - SpaceParanoids, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4But the similarities don't stop there! Did you notice that...
* Both sites use XHTML markup
* Both sites have CSS layouts
* Both sites use Javascript for front-end scripting
* Both sites use the color blue here and there
* Both sites have gray text on a white background
* Both sites use headings that are a larger font than the body text
* Both sites use Arial as the primary typeface
* Both sites are hosted on the Internet
* Both sites utilize hyperlink anchors to link documents
It's shameless! Here's hoping the Digg community can spam the bejesus out of Dell's site to tech them a lesson. - geonet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Really, who cares? Only the Digg zealots. Go to church if you need religion.
- unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's legit for community to protect it commodities. No one can enforce your trademark copy rights, but the Digg nation itself.
- Eliot99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is getting a little silly now. It's like saying USA Today ripped off CNN because they post news stories with clickable links. Lighten up. Digg does not own the general concept and layout.
- disord3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This was my first thought. Somewhere out there someone is pouting over the fact that this group of morons called digg ripped off his/her ingenoius idea to allow members to cast a vote for or against a site, aggregating and ranking the subjects all in one go. Everyone is quick to shout thief, but that's not really right.
Sometimes an idea is so simple and elegant, and it just "makes sense". This is one of those ideas. No one had to sit around and think of this idea for hours on end because the idea is just so self-evident. It's like blaming someone else for taking your idea of wearing shoes or locking the door. - techgirly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I really don't get why people Digg articles like this. It's ridiculous. It's a suggestion site for crying out loud. If Yahoo or Dell launched a news site with the Digg format, then Diggers could rightfully pounce all over them. But a suggestion site? Get over it. It should be a compliment for Digg that big names like Yahoo and Dell think enough of their style to use it for other purposes, AND credit them with a link back.
Some diggers really know how to give Digg a bad name, and to them I say grow up! - TheDiggMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Direct link to the site:
http://www.dellideastorm.com/ - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Google Desktop -> Apple Spotlight -> Windows Live Search."
It was more like Google Desktop -> Windows Live Search -> Apple Spotlight . - Pingspike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dell wish to use the facility and recognise its a good idea, whereas yahoo are a bunch of money grabbing morons without a good idea of their own, so stole it instead and plan to use it to make money off it. Yahoo's use i object too, Dells use i promote, if it improves their damn service even a tiny little bit (lets face it, it needs a kick in the ass)
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And they all write either in the title or the description that the thiefs are "ashamed". Why should you be ashamed for taking an IDEA (just the idea of having users vote up things that they find interesting)
- unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In a town called cyberspace it did.
- huper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Can we just say that the whole mash-up culture just fosters this...
Lets look at the facts: The digg voting system is slick.
When ideas are great they are doomed to be copied, thats a how innovation happens.
Google Desktop -> Apple Spotlight -> Windows Live Search.
Move on... quit bitching - win7info, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2oh come off it-digg didn't invent voting! Take a chil pill
- itsanyoneguess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Spamming Dell would be simply juvenile, it's an idea site not a story site. Even suggesting spamming makes the digg user making that remark appear to be a petulant child on a pedantic rant. I swear some of you people need to grow up and find ways in real life to get noticed...do your friends assign you approval numbers in real life? Move on, get over it and stop whining.
- djackmanson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dugg SpaceParanoids' comment, purely because of correct use of the word 'typeface' as opposed to 'font'.
- danakin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Much better than Yahoo. This site doesn't copy Digg's visual style at all in comparison.
- Innagadadavida, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1wrong reply, digg down.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1When you're hot, you're hot.
In digg-alike cases, when you're not, you're not. - jinglee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Hopefully Diggers don't find this as much as a 'shameless rip off' as it was from Yahoo...
- SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Digg users unite and spam the site to keep Kevin's Rose chance at millions alive.
- sfmman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1wrong place
