Dear Kevin Rose, Please Create a Photo Section - Sign The Petition
centernetworks.com — The last few days I ’ve noticed a number of photos getting to the front page of Digg. Some are great photos but I’m not sure they’re really front-page worthy, especially when you go to Flickr Explore and find shots that are really amazing. This is not to take anything away from the photographers, but rather a suggestion on how to improve Digg.
- 8253 diggs
- digg it
- pype, on 10/12/2007, -57/+466It's right here
http://www.flickr.com/
Enjoy.- Sagags, on 10/12/2007, -84/+65I dont really think a photo section is needed on digg
- gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -45/+5Most of us know that already, but apparently some of us still don't. I'll sign just to get people to stop making posts about this.
- afractus, on 10/12/2007, -50/+14Kevin Rose has a photo section you retard.
http://digg.com/search?s=photos&submit=Search§ion=news&type=both&area=all&age=all&sort=most
and its sorted by most diggs! what a digg newbie ewwww - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -19/+281I for one don't want a Digg category for everything under the sun. Digg had a more intelligent crowd when it was more tech oriented. More categories just dilutes the good stuff.
Do we really want all the cross-over Youtube users posting some "funny" picture of a midget kicking someone in the nuts that they got in a chain email? - TheAstronomer, on 10/12/2007, -16/+149Pics or it didn't happen
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -11/+180@theworm,
"Do we really want all the cross-over Youtube users posting some "funny" picture of a midget kicking someone in the nuts that they got in a chain email?"
This is exactly the reason we WANT a photo section. Get that ***** outta my news! - maize, on 10/12/2007, -19/+8Just merge the pics and vid sections!!!!!!!!!!!!
- op12, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24theworm, the whole point is that if a category doesn't get created, these types of posts will dilute what you consider "the good stuff." If a category is made, you can choose to filter it out and get just tech news if that's all you want. And those that like photos and not tech stories benefit too.
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -10/+151Digg also needs a digg section for articles about digg and Kevin.
- laxmaniac3773, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4i don't think digg needs a photo section. even the video section is unnecessary. if its good content that people like, it should be put on the front page.
- puttly, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I was thinking like an IMAGE category, for images like photos, cartoons, a random edited picture etc.
- erikerikerik, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1yeah, just what I want to do, sign up for another account!!!
between every single forum I go to I start to loathing sites that force me to sign up. - felderado, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2If people want amusing pictures they go to 4chan.
- BlackSheep720, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52how about instead of "signing the petition," just digg the bloody story?
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Wrong thread, digg down.
- macfanboi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Does Digg really need a photo section for pictures of Steve Jobs in various mock turtlenecks?
- rofflcopterr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13and a "best EVARRR!!!!111one!!!" category.
- lukeydukey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34The title should be rephrased as such:
"Dear Kevin Rose, Please create a [NSFW] section" - jblade, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1/signed
- resplence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah let's create a section just for AMAZING titles and 'title says it all' descriptions.
'Cause really, that's what it will turn out to be. - Richggs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I dont know if i want a pictures section to end up like video and being seperated, ill sign but only if all sections are combined in ONE front page, like a newspaper.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I agree. Ideally there shouldn't be photos posted at all unless there's a story to them.
Also, I wouldn't mind so much if the photography posted was of high quality. Some of it is good, but most of the photos which turn up on the Digg frontpage are actually amateuristic crap. Someones snapshots. The "scary long exposure photo of a park" which was on the frontpage yesterday is a perfect example.
So: what we really need is for diggers to take their responsibility and actually BURY dissociated photos posted without a story. - simplenation, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1just for the record: i'm all about a Photo section. but will it really make sense? i mean the video section is a ghost town. it's amazing how people post videos in the news section....
- cyberpope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://digg.com/design/Digg_Needs_a_Picture_Section
Cough, maybe not petitioned so well but still - presto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1WHY DOES CAPSLOCK ANNOY PEOPLE SO MUCH?
I THINK IT'S SEXY
- Sagags, on 10/12/2007, -84/+65I dont really think a photo section is needed on digg
- bananaguyc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+120A general "Art" section, for submissions relating to photography and other mediums would be cool.
- fkr2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+67The intentions would be cool. The result however would be "/pictures/funny/OMG_kitten_photoshopped_to_look_stupid_2885639688".
- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Agreed, they could tag it onto the video section and I would be cool with that. It would help get the video section more views and keep the non-news pictures off of the main site.
- freqout, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I agree. I've been thinking for a while that Digg could really use an Art category (container?). The closest thing its got is Technology -> Design, but its cluttered and weighed down by the associations of those two words already.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Yeah, I think a general "media and art" section would be better than a pure "photos" section. That would lump all the visual stuff together for those who do/don't want to find it.
- Jjcd7, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2There should be a pictures section under every category.
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3An "Art" category would be much better, but not as an image catch-all. Keep tagging the content, stop tagging the medium.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It doesn't really matter how much crap was posted to the art section as long as it wasn't posted everywhere else, as is the case now.
If all the random and rather sucky photos were posted to the Art section, one could block them by blocking that topic. As it is, they show up in science, design, gaming news, world news....
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -8/+64But how will we get our recommended daily doses of vitamins H, D, and R?!
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3D tends to come as a result of sunlight. Your body makes Vitamin D after being exposed to UV light. The vitamin D is then used for such purposes as keeping your bones straight.
Now, with that in mind, I'll guess that H comes from long exposure to a lack of sunlight, and that R comes as a result of vitamins H and D interacting with each other in a specially created medium such that one's colors end up being very vibrant. One will notice greener greens, browner browns, and pinker pinks in his color.
(yes, I got the joke.) - punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@ gcnaddict
WTF?
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3D tends to come as a result of sunlight. Your body makes Vitamin D after being exposed to UV light. The vitamin D is then used for such purposes as keeping your bones straight.

- nrfx, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4silly diggers, teh interwebs is for tubes.
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No. Its "made" of tubes.
- ampersand2001, on 10/12/2007, -22/+6dear kevin rose, don't be my valentine.

- rexb, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2Pigg?
- jkostantos, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3what about an audio section.. post music for a listen
- subarusqueege, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8nay
- beargrylls, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4i think "art" would be covered under a photo section. sounds like a great idea!
- poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3it is coming, www.picli.com - will fill this need... beta launches soon so sign up quick!
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Stop spam.
- WeSaluteYou, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5*signs*
also, it would be great if it had a separate category for wallpapers, and could be labeled as a single image, gallery, or w/e, and even better if special flags for ultra high resolution images.- laxmaniac3773, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3how bout NO!
- kevinrose, on 10/28/2007, -64/+627hmm : )
- kee440, on 10/12/2007, -57/+13Hmm indeed...
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -13/+44Say yes, I know you will.
- gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -48/+13Make a Bush-Bashing section while your at it, we seem to need one of those. ;)
- max420, on 10/12/2007, -26/+10I think a photo category would be great, I mean, we already have video's... so why not pictures?
- WeSaluteYou, on 10/12/2007, -11/+106Am I the only person that felt obliged to digg up Kevin's insightful remark? (srsly)
- Zm3r3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Hey, you. The five or so above me. Didn't you understand the : ) of Mr Roses comment?
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -21/+8We seriously need it Kevin.
Okay, tbh I just made this comment to tell you I got my Digg hoddie and it's ***** awesome. Although I'm getting hot sitting with it in front of the computer. - Sanchez, on 10/12/2007, -5/+211http://i19.tinypic.com/4c3lsno.jpg
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -23/+6I really don't think a picture section is needed.... because if it is created... everyone is gonna submit what they think is a cool picture.. and i really didn't come here to look at pictures... i came here for news...there's other places to look at photos... a lot of other places...
- drake77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I have enjoyed seeing a good number of the pictures posted to the front page recently, and a lot of them _are_ tech-related, which reflects the readership of digg. I think of the video section when considering this issue- I love it and digg would not seem the same to me without it now, as I am accustomed to just kicking back after work and watching the crazy stuff that's posted there (read: spider on drugs, MIT sketching, random Family Guy clips, etc.). I think a picture section would only add to my enjoyment of digg. Just my thoughts..
- fkr2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Yay. Tomorrow's frontpage ... "DIGG ADDS PICTURE CATEGORY!!!!!!!!!!" 3 times with 80 duplicates kicking around in the queue.
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If a photo is news related, it should be in the news section. If the photo is technology related, it should be in the technology section. If the photo doesn't fit any category, it probably shouldn't be on digg. Same goes for videos.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47Changing "Video" -> "Media" sounds like a smooth move. Makes a lot of sense.
- Azewaldo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26"hmm : )" ...Which I bet really means... "already working on it"
- tonich03, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12 useless remark => -x.diggs down(-Kevin Rose)= +diggs up.
Whatever - jackyyll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I concur.
- cybertron3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I have never seen a comment without actual words modded up above 200 before... or 100... or... you get the idea...
Damn.
Could only have been beaten by "BREAKING: hmmmmm :)" - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@Zm3r3
Mr Rose? WTF? - tangerine, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1OMG.. he GETS it!
- terrortwilight, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5ohmygawd kevin i love you ♥
spotting that shortest remark ever totally made my day.... for some reason
i love everything kevin rose. serious - MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Funny indeed. That comment with over 300 diggs just because it was Kevin :)
- jpb0104, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2please add a photography section in the news too
- Cink420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6dugg down what kind of a comment is that I wanna see progress here dammit!
- truegodofwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13sorry kevin I dugg u down. one word comments just don't cut it.
- samnetwork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yay! I replied to Kevins comment.
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Nope, no thanks...
- senmu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Why not just make this digg a petition? :S
By the way, I tried leaving a signature, but it "couldn't process submit". - muffins, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21. Flickr
2. Theres plenty of these stories that reach the front page which brings me to...
3. Kevin checks the front page all the time if you haven't picked up on that from watching Diggnation - look a few comments up. - ScottAG, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2It's right here:
http://www.fark.com/
Enjoy. - dgbhopkins, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0"A major home page Digg has already demonstrated that the Digg community wants this."
So why do you need to create another one?? - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -23/+3News flash:
Kevin Rose doesn't know how to program in any language. He's a noob. Get over it and build your own site!- robz0r, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Agreed hes to busy playing with his apple products!
- kardonn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1there needs to be a place to put things like this:
http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Bat_like_demon_blamed_for_sex_attacks_Picture_of_suspect - kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Dear digg, please add a separate sections for each operating system.
Oh yay a unix/linux sectio....Thanks!!!!
Awesome Apple Section....Yay!!!
Sweet Microsoft section...oh....I guess 95% of the market doesn't matter. - dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Online petitions are about as useful as a mute with a microphone.
I have never "signed" one in my life and I am not about to start (irrespective of whether I agree with the submitter or not). - reva, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I just think an "other" category is needed under entertainment. It'd include photos, as well as literature, magazines, comics, radio, and other forms of entertainment that aren't currently given their own subsections.
- tw0k1ngs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I've said it before and will say it again:
Photos without stories don't mean ***** (those that DON'T require stories are artistic, and not worthy nor plentiful enough to get their own category). In 99% of photo cases people digg the STORY, and the photo ACCOMPANIES the story.
So, what, you want a "Stories that contain photos about ANY subject" section? Garbage.- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You don't get it. Go browse though the interesting photos on Flickr for a while, you'll see that a good picture doesn't need a story, which is why it would make sense to have its own section.
- TecHeavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It really is a good idea.
- poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1yo - chill - it is coming, www.picli.com - will fill this need... beta launches soon so sign up quick!
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And can you not sign up after beta launches? Maybe I want to see it work before I sign up....
Oh, and maybe I think it's dumb and I want all my stuff in one spot
That too
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And can you not sign up after beta launches? Maybe I want to see it work before I sign up....
- eablokker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I've been really freakin annoyed by all the photos that get dugg up on the home page. The only reason I am in favor of a photo section is to get those damn photos off the freaking front page and into its own page like the video page does.
- poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1picli.com - beta launches soon, = the answer it is built to co exist with digg not compete, gona be cool
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but people still mess up the videos one. The fact that you can still link to youtube or similar sites in the news section confuses me.
- milk93rd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2A petition? Really? Did you send a suggestion and get ignored? Did they used to have a photo section and got rid of it? Has there been a big groundswell that's been totally blown off?
Buried for abuse and being stupid.
Not a bad idea, mind, just over-the-top way to suggest it. - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I think its a great idea. I can't think of one reason not to have one (including TubGirl).
- WeSaluteYou, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1LOL! - Look at the digg stack:
http://zenixstudios.com/f_new/f/diggstack341.jpg- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24How much ***** can you put on Firefox?
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1What? It looks like all he has is the bookmarks and the Google bar.
- WeSaluteYou, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I have 70 active extensions and 6000 bookmarks XD
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2One feature I'd like to see (and I mention it here because there isn't anywhere else to mention it) is the ability to sort stories by the amount of recent activity in the discussion. That way stories that are being actively discussed can stay on the front page (when sorted that way), instead of dropping off, being posted again in a week, and the whole same discussion (with a different set of characters) happening again.
In general, the discussion support on this site is really pretty abyssmal. Like, for instance, having to type @whoever when replying to a reply. - ahpro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2If youguys look on the digg stack thing, you'll see that this story is growing phenomenally. Just look at it! Towering above the others!
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Ehh, instead of signing the petition I'll just digg the story. If it get's enough diggs it'll be basically the same thing, right?
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2kill all your friends and ride their corpses like a carousel
- ipearx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't think separating stories by content type is a good idea. Why should it matter if an item is a web page, a picture or a video? The front page should show the best of the best, no matter what type of content it is. Sure it might be handy to view just the videos, or pictures but it shouldn't be the main way to organise the site.
Personally I would like to see more categories, including a "Technology -> Internet" category, for stories about the Internet and web in general. - poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1http://www.picli.com - beta sign up now. get in
- therealduckie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why has no one banned your annoying ass yet?
- Colesif, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Eh, if everything got its own section it wouldn't really be Digg any more. Things get to the front page because the masses like them. This would just turn into google if sections kept getting added. It's not a bad idea, but I feel it takes away from what makes Digg, Digg.
- Gamblor24, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Kevin please keep Digg the way it is. If people want to go see pictures instead of reading intelligent articles then they can go somewhere else. You already added a video section which in my opinion was better when the videos were just on the main page with the news. Adding a photo section will just add another tab that I never click.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Whoa... this is the fastest-dugg story I've ever seen... just in the past fifteen minutes it got three hundred votes, from 700-something to almost 1,000!
(and by the time you read this I'm sure it'll be way past that) - StephenCarboni, on 10/12/2007, -42/+1I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A GOOD IDEA, BUT JUST PLEASE DON'T ADDRESS IT TO KEVIN ROSE. THAT WOULD BE ADDRESSING A MYSPACE PROBLEM TO TOM. KEVIN DOES HAVE AN INPUT ON DIGG AND MAY DO SOME OF THE CODING, BUT YOU WOULDN'T ADDRESS ANY PROBLEMS TO HIM. IT GOES TO THE DIGG SUPPORT TEAM.
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24FYI
your caps lock key is stuck - martypal2005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Here is who we will complain to:
Microsoft -> Bill Gates
Apple -> Steve Jobs
Digg -> Kevin Rose
Now stop it with the nonsense.
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24FYI
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I am resistant to change.
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10F adding any more sections... add that 1990's feature of proper threading.
- Jaymz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3No, ***** this. If anything make it another category so the complainers can take it out of their news. I never go to the damn video section now that it's separated from the main page.
- martypal2005, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I don't really see the need for a photo category.
Also.
The podcast category.
