- anxdiety, on 03/06/2009, -1/+34Its only taken 6 years to catch up to WASTE.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WASTE - Izzmo, on 03/06/2009, -3/+35Never heard of a darknet, but but your ass I'm going to start one!
- voteme4pope, on 03/08/2009, -0/+25But I have no friends =(
- greenlight2001, on 03/08/2009, -0/+21My ass is already but butted.
- LANjackal, on 03/06/2009, -2/+20Would be nice if the new Darknet feature were ported to Frostwire ...
- Aerynvala, on 03/06/2009, -2/+18This is the first time Limewire has sounded appealing to me. My ISP throttles uploads, sometimes quite a lot, and when I need to transfer a large file (and by large I mean anything over 5MB) to a friend it can take ages to upload it to my server for them to download. I would consider using Limewire to get around that.
- dullnation, on 03/08/2009, -0/+14Try Hamachi instead, super easy to set up VPN and you can use standard windows network sharing. Quite convenient.
https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.as ... - rentmitchum, on 03/08/2009, -1/+13Batman would use the darknet.. that makes it cool.
- stoanhart, on 03/06/2009, -2/+11Read the article, did you?
- vipertech, on 03/08/2009, -2/+111) Set up FTP server.
2) Make accounts for your trusted friends.
3) Upload things you want to share.
4) ?????
5) Profit! - benitojuarez, on 03/08/2009, -1/+9sneakernet ftw
- megabytehl, on 03/08/2009, -0/+7Used this in college after the administration went after our DC++ hub. Very good program, but it's a bit clunky. I guess that's understandable considering it was developed by the same guy who made WinAmp.
- theghoul, on 03/08/2009, -0/+7They are all over my campus. Its like a smorgasbord of music, movies and software in the dorms and classroom WiFi.
- Otto, on 03/08/2009, -0/+7Yeah, no kidding. WASTE has been around forever and it's still great. If only there were decent clients for it, the protocol is damn good, but the WASTE client just blows. Works, but it can be annoying.
- scarwars, on 03/08/2009, -0/+7lets just go back to dialup bbs
/X ftw! - zubumufu, on 03/08/2009, -0/+6On the Invisible Internet Project, I2P, you can run BitTorrent, Web Services, Gnutella and eDonkey2000 all on an encrypted, onion routed network. IP addresses are never exchanged between computers that connect to each other. It's designed how all of the Internet should work. Download it today and see what you've been missing. http://www.i2p2.de/download.html
- 0tis, on 03/08/2009, -0/+5I really don't think this is anything new. Remember DC++?
To the journalists, bloggers, forumites; please don't turn this into the next big scare. I for one am happy to leave them the torrents to chew on for a while - just look how ***** that has become as a *legal* distribution system. So much potential, and it doesn't get used because it has a bad rep (and traffic gets throttled). - Harabeck, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4The problem with Darknets is that if you're trying to share files with more than just close friends, you have to add buddies you may not know. People even end up looking up nodes willing to be added as buddies on irc channels or certain message boards, and this defeats the purpose of the darknet in the first place, and makes it hard for the user.
For privacy, you can get some bittorrent clients working with Tor, or you can try your luck with Freenet(which can use darknet, but by default does not). But, Freenet is incredibly slow.
There are few other options here, but I don't much about them.

. - SawButter, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4Get off my swamp, you kids !
- LacanX, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4Wow...just....wow.
- AngelBunny, on 03/08/2009, -0/+3also aim or dropbox both work well.
if you upload a file to the dropbox network that someone else has already uploaded then it will upload like the first 100kB then it will say it is finished. it makes it easy to send to friends if what you're upping is floating around on the net already. - emazur, on 03/08/2009, -2/+5I tried WASTE maybe 3 years ago and it was incredibly complicated to get working, and I consider myself a techie. Even after I did establish a connection, I was only able to manage a one-way connection.
- 0tis, on 03/08/2009, -0/+3Batman: The Dark Net. Coming to cinemas near you.
- xero69, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2I hope this puts pressure on the music and movie industries to provide us with an affordable, easy to use, and legal method for sharing our favorite films and music online. Otherwise the trend will just continue.
- TomFrost, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2but but, in the what?
- Meocross, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2A private online P2P network from your own computer? blah the contest is over man, you cant beat IRC's
- random90210, on 03/08/2009, -1/+3http://digg.com/pets_animals/It_s_Never_too_Late_t ...
It's never too late to make new friends. - McDutchie, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2It depends on what the definition of "is" is.
- ultrafez, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2That's kinda missing the point. Darknets are supposed to be a closed system where random people can't just join.
- DeathfireD, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2or try the open source equivalent P2PVPN http://www.p2pvpn.org/index.html
- Gareth321, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2I actually see everyone that cares about their privacy eventually running inside a darknet or onion type network; possible augmented with individual VPN's that can be opened and closed between peers on the fly.
- zeabu, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2I care about my privacy, but then again I live in one of those W.-European countries that don't give a ***** about making private copies.
- hottuna, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Try I2P.
It is like Tor, but only about ther 'hidden services'. So there is an anon interner ontop of internet where filesharing and everything else done on internet exists.
For example there are 2 bittorrent trackers. About 4 bittorrent clients.
1 Gnutella client - i2Phex
1 emule/kademlia client - iMule
http://www.i2p2.de/download.html - carlosos, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1You are missing the encryption part.
I use Hamachi for VPN service between all computers in the family. That way we can share anything inside the family (living in 3 different cities) without problems.
Just use the same service for your friends and you not even need to make accounts for the FTP server and it is all encrypted. - Aerynvala, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1thank you!
- duder, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1instead of starting your own, maybe jump in on someone else's? http://darknet.me
- csemike, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1This just seems like a single-hop version of OneSwarm -- http://oneswarm.cs.washington.edu/
OneSwarm does this _and_ allows you to search and share with friends of friends, friends of friends of friends, etc. - 0tis, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1Was this an attempt to be sarcastic? Because if so, it went completely over my head.
- Han5010, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1i2P is good. It's much quicker than it used to be, and so is FreeNet for that matter.
However, one must keep in mind that when you say that i2P supports ed2k, Gnutella, and BitTorrent protocols, that does not mean that you can connect to the public servers via i2P. It is a self-contained network, much like FreeNet.
There are a few "outproxies" which allow HTTP and email connections out to the public internet, but AFAIK, there are not yet any which will allow use of any other protocols outside of the i2P network.
This means that you can share those files, using those protocols, only with other i2P users. This makes for an extremely secure end-to-end conneciton, though, and there is quite a lot of content on there, so it's definitely worth checking out. - LacanX, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Yeah. And once they do they will barely make any money(Kinda like itunes which barely makes a profit. Mostly itunes is just for seeling ipods, not for making money on music) and people will still pirate music cus its free and they don't care. People don't pirate because its easier, people pirate because its free.

- DeathfireD, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Is better meaning it actually works without having to go through a great deal of trouble to run. WASTE is a pain to get working and, quite honestly sucks. Not to mention it's no longer being maintained.
Alliances default Encryption is more then enough to keep you hidden from prying eyes. Look at the source before assuming things please. And yes, the SSL option is experimental and more then often does not work. However If you have the proper JAVA encryption package downloaded, it should work. The programmer of Alliance is working on making SSL work correctly for the future release. - duder, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1i wouldn't say missing the point. what does it matter if random people can join? it's all still 'anonymous' on there. look at anonet, same principle.
- Otto, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Huh? WASTE is easy to get working. Have every person generate a public and private keypair. Trade the public keys with somebody else on the network, and have both people add them. Then connect. Done deal. The new guys will have to trade keys with everybody on the network via the network after that, but that's mostly a matter of clicking yes prompts for a while or selecting the auto-accept option in the settings.
The key thing is for security and cryptography. Any system that lacks this sort of thing cannot really be said to be "secure". DC++ can be pretty insecure, when you get right down to it. - init100, on 03/08/2009, -1/+1Better in what way? According to their site, Alliance uses a very simplistic encryption scheme, which I interpret as "invented by themselves", which means that it's probably already broken. The SSL option is experimental, and according to their forums, does not work.
