- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -1/+86A region based option to see local news would be cool.
- sungoddess808, on 08/29/2008, -4/+64It looks like local news publications might have some competition.
- iptib, on 08/29/2008, -3/+56I don't think any of us can afford to underestimate the power of Digg. And considering I work for a newspaper, that's something I take pretty seriously. I'm amazed at the reach Digg has and I respect Kevin Rose for what he's done with it.
- justinx0r, on 08/29/2008, -0/+52And you're a Yankees fan. You're an enigma, sir.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -1/+35How would they "group" us? By our profile settings? Or by our IP geolocation? because I Live in Costa Rica, but I want news from Boston...
- AlfKayda, on 08/29/2008, -1/+23My town is extremely boring so I hope not...
- Ymeg, on 08/29/2008, -5/+23Digg as a respected news site?
Maybe.. but only when summiters accurately describe the article and stop posting 4chan crap. - mikek814, on 08/29/2008, -1/+16They may get some traffic after years of starvation. Let's hope their servers can handle digg effect.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+13This is what my town considers news: Car Collides with Tractor Trailer, Fine Arts on Display at 156th Allentown Fair, Flag Holders Stolen from Lehigh County Cemetery, Lehigh Valley Unemployment Rate Unchanged
- thethirdI, on 08/29/2008, -2/+11Wow, the mainstream media is embracing the Internet? Only took a few years.
- YoctoYotta, on 08/29/2008, -1/+10Salutations Johan Marcus Guy,
My name is Yocto Andrew Yotta. As ambassador elect to the Digg region of the internet, I first would like to welcome you and your family to our warm embrace.

God Bless you and God Bless America! - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -3/+11Local news = good idea
Forums = bad idea - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -1/+9Thanks for sharing that
- EtherGnat, on 08/29/2008, -0/+8It might try and place you automatically via IP but I'm sure there would be a profile setting to adjust it to whatever you want. No automatic method is perfect, and like you many people want news from a different region.
- Vuredel, on 08/29/2008, -0/+7Why in the world does digg need a forum? It already IS a forum.
- DigSomeMore, on 08/29/2008, -4/+11Hmm, very interesting...
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+7I can see it now.....
"They're bloogers on steroids, and they act like an internet news machine." - reyesz, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6so Flag Holders stolen from Lehigh County cemetery ah?
were they nice? - phatphil, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6My town is boring.
- mickstephenson, on 08/29/2008, -2/+8The best improvement digg could make is to remove the shout system, it's only used for submitters to shout lackies into digging their crap and spamming by "women" from Thailand who add about 1000 friends per day.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -3/+9Only if they are from California and vote Democrat. Those are the only people Digg truly caters for.
- kigabit, on 08/29/2008, -6/+12Setting aside your hopelessly inappropriate analogy, your post was a meandering, poorly formatted displeasure to read. Buried.
- Atomic1fire, on 08/29/2008, -1/+6except privacy is still an issue
No one else seems to have pointed it out but Im sure some people dont want people finding out where they live, which is why they may display the nation, but not the state or city
Wouldnt local news kind of give that away,
and I only support a forum for support
I dont see how digg can keep from becoming a message board, or balencing two communities at once, or the forum dieing off - theysayjump, on 08/29/2008, -1/+6I actually submitted this idea to Digg a couple of months ago (July 1st to be exact). Should be cool if they implement it:
"1.) Localities. The ability to submit stories and give them a location, so that people can search for stories or articles pertaining to their region, or see the most dugg articles in someone's area. Maybe have the option in your profile to enter your zip code so it can search for posts with the same or similar zip and when submitting a story you enter the zip code of the area that the article takes place in (optional of course). You could have a separate section next to Upcoming for it. I think it'd be sweet." - locojones, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5Fantastic! Yet another section to turn off!
- digifuzz, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5A bit presumptuous to assume all Digg users are in the US, no? :oP
- sockpuppets, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5I see you have a masters in brownnosery.
- whahaa, on 08/29/2008, -4/+8if you find and article about martha stewart on digg, and then you click on it, there is no majority great enough or powerful enough that could possibly force you into clicking on an article about drag racing.
- thealsir, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4I'm sure they can factor that in by allowing the user to choose his or her preferences
- geddon, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4I think the word you're looking for is Socialist, as everyone has a voice, regardless of their social status or income.
- th3heretic, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4Geo location services say I live in Virginia... I live in Florida.
- GoodDigger, on 08/29/2008, -1/+5Bravo! I would be super into that!
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -2/+6Thanks for sharing. Very interesting.
- cheeseplease, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4I just wish digg would have less bias towards the US. I love digg's basics but it can get tiring to see articles about things like John McCain's wife's half-sister on the front page every day.
- doublefelix, on 08/30/2008, -1/+5Digg would still need these guys to aggregate news from
- HallenbeckJoe, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4International versions of Digg would be cool. Especially a german one.
- Greg2k, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4and use Macs
- mckirkus, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4I built a local version of digg/reddit, just plug in your zipcode and go.
http://houndwire.com - whahaa, on 08/29/2008, -1/+5where will local digg get its content? not local newspaper websites?
- MaxMWood, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3A section for the UK would also be nice. No offence, but your presidential election ***** really annoys me.
- jotate, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3Or they could just have the drop downs for each state, then a sub menu for the major areas. Drill down between national, state, area, and local city news. So news submitted as a suburb of Columbus will fall into US, Ohio, Central Ohio, and Columbus sections.
- binaryloop, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3Speaking of local news.... take a look at this Digg user: http://digg.com/users/kactuscrow
He has submitted 13,184 stories and 0% are popular. He trolls the Internet for local news and submits random ***** from around the globe into categories like "World News". I'm fine with Digg setting up a special sub-section for local news that I can unsubscribe from. But, this guy is pissing in the pool and flooding Digg with local news that has no relevance to 99.9996% of us. Let's stop this while we still can. Mark this guy's stories as "SPAM" and bury him. - thegrantman, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3Why would it matter if someone knew what area you lived in?
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3Republic
- Paranoidmarvin, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3As long as there is a UK section, at least, I'm happy
- T00LB0X, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3"this would definitely make newspaper completely obsolete."
OR help local newspapers that are currently struggling...that's if Kevin/Jay allow them to add top stories from Digg to their publication each week...also drive traffic to their own news website from local people.
I would totally subscribe to my local newspaper (that is struggling) if they had a Digg branded top-user submitted stories/comments each week. Yes there are other options for user submitted content that the paper could roll out already...but digg has the user base to make it work. - UtopianComplex, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4This has been the feature I have most wanted in Digg... Huzzah!
- Atomic1fire, on 08/30/2008, -1/+4Local newspaper and tv station sites
that's the only place I could see any news coming from - Atomic1fire, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3you do raise a good point, that by creating contacts with news services it could create a breach of trust, because of the possibility of those partnerships creating a signifigant control over stories on digg due to the possibility of traffic coming to their sites, its also likely that they could use the partnerships for censorship, say one bad thing about cnn and get banned, because they don't want to jeopardize a contract with Time Warner or one of its branches, likely turner, giving them significant coverage on CNN or other turner affiliated groups. I'm not saying they would do it... I'm saying they need to prevent things from resulting from partnerships, and affiliations aka choose your friends wisely or they might be your downfall.
- PseudoThink, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3I was so psyched fellow Diggers dugg up this suggestion for yesterday's town hall, and in Jay and Kevin's response to it. As a developer, their follow-up plea for job applicants struck a chord...I'll be sending in my resume soon. With some luck maybe I'll be working on the implementation of this sometime soon? Yeah, right...(I wish).
PS - Here's my suggestion from yesterday's Digg townhall: http://digg.com/tech_news/Digg_Townhall_next_Thurs ... -
