- iamsjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is it that gay people always have to announce they are gay? I'm reading through that list and I come across "Gay couple willing to assist the displaced."
Who the hell cares?? Just help for christs sake!

Considering the hassles gay people have endured they probably feel the need to warn people about their lifestyle.
Of course they could just be looking for recruits... ;-) - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So how exactly are flood victims without power or Internet supposed to respond to these? How are offers of "I'll make long distance calls for you" going to help people who have Internet access? I know I'm pessimistic but is this really a "good use of technology"?
- phore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is very sad

I don't think it's unreasonable for them to want people they're inviting into their home (which is what it sounds like they're offering) to be prepared for what they'll find. Especially when it's something that many people have been killed over in that part of the country. - LegendX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1maybe they think their homosexuality will encourage people oO.... *shrugs and goes off watching tv*
- gr4p34p3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think people are able to make cell phone calls locally (985/504) area codes, but not ouside of that area (and we cannot call in either). The message people are within that area and are able to make the calls locally to reach those you cannot. I also have people I am trying to reach and may give them a try.
- nonchallant0819, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0This is a great story... found this one through http://www.google.com

I read motionblur's posts, cracked up and forgot everything. It sometimes pays to have short term memory. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Americana Destructo.
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great story! But has anyone made a donation yet?
Follow the link on this digg

and make some donations to help the relief effort. Digg this story and get it to the front page! - PercyKittenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SjN: Considering that it's the south, where homophobia is still very much in control, they probably think that it's best to be clear about the situation since it'll be pretty obvious who decides to live there and making things uncomfortable between anyone during an emergency situation probably won't help. Realize that they're doing something very generous and opening up their shelter to those in need, which is a HUGE segment of the New Orleans population who don't have anywhere else to go, and it's at their own risk to do so.
On another note, I'm not clicking the submitted link, nor am I digging the story because, as interesting as this is, I'm concerned that the Digg Effect or the Slashdot Effect will make the site unreachable if we hit it too hard and it's too important that people who need to access the site are able to do so. - oxigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, the site I used to get free stuff is being used to help people find eachother. Yay for the internet! and three cheers for craigslist!

Understandable, and a good idea. - adamS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I know this is semi-unrelated but wrt the looting, this is totally unacceptable behaviour. They should send in the army and give them shoot to kill orders on anyone looting electronics and ***** like I've been seeing all day. If it wasn't bad enough that your entire house was destroyed, but to come back and found it's been stripped clean by bloody scavengers...
