- columb, on 12/14/2007, -4/+20***** DRM!
- andycr512, on 12/14/2007, -2/+16Actually, they do. They just don't know it. They get ticked off when they can't get the shows they bought on iTunes to play on their Zune. They get ticked off when they buy something but can only make a certain number of CD's with it. They don't know why, but they do know it doesn't work.
- sgtpppr, on 12/15/2007, -1/+11Isn't that the POINT of this campaign? Awareness of the issues for the masses? Your statement is exactly why this is necessary.
- spyrochaete, on 12/15/2007, -2/+11You've obviously never owned a Disney DVD before. The number of unskippable ads and copyright warnings is unreal.
- RedHerringHack, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5And from that point, why take a chance on buying more if you aren't sure it's going to work? You really want to buy, but are never going to get bent over again. So you wait. Or you get it from your buddy.
- inactive, on 12/14/2007, -3/+8Agreed. These big companies have learned that they can get people to pay more and more, while at the same time giving them less and less control over the stuff they've bought.
- zeiben, on 12/15/2007, -1/+5Average smokers don't give a ***** about the extra nicotine tobacco companies keep slipping in to thwart their efforts at quitting. Doesn't mean they shouldn't give a *****
- Phlosten, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4Pick up the paper and you'll realise how stupid society is. We are living in a world of morons who have no clue that they are being raped daily by corporate greed.
- Lunarbunny, on 12/15/2007, -0/+4MONSTER KILL!
Wait, wrong unreal. - amneosis, on 12/15/2007, -2/+5Can I just add that Boing Boing is available to buy on the Amazon Kindle, chock-full of DRM.
- spyrochaete, on 12/15/2007, -5/+8In this day and age everything belongs to the group that shouts the loudest. Silence equals abstention in this world. At least the FSF shouts in favour of open standards and open source.
- int10h, on 12/15/2007, -2/+4***** the RIAA
- yaddayaddayoda, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2You said it too.
- tness, on 12/14/2007, -5/+7Stallman FTW!
- blapbloopblop, on 12/14/2007, -3/+4you have ALL said ***** one too many times.
I'm telling. - inactive, on 12/15/2007, -10/+11Yeah, astroturfing Amazon and taking advantage of their tagging system sure seems "clever" to me.
A friend of mine asked me a few weeks ago what that whole thing was. Apparently he was looking at some DVD player that was tagged with "defectivebydesign", so he clicked on the tag and started looking at all the idiocy that the FSF has dictated their minions to afflict on the real world. He's not really technical but his opinion is that these people are mostly losers with way too much time on their hands and massive grudges.
I'm sure the FSF is making a huge impact on the world with these puerile disruptive tactics. After all, the interwebs belongs to the group that shouts the loudest. - sliksta, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Looks like someone dugg you down even though what you say is true. Probably one of the people your were talking about. Well I dugg you back up.
- hierophantus, on 12/15/2007, -8/+9Please do not feed the Cory Doctorow.
- andycr512, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1And then they cry about sales being lower, and put even WORSE DRM on it, and so on in a loop...
- Yeago, on 12/15/2007, -6/+7Buried for containing the name 'Cory Doctorow'.
ps: ***** DRM! - bootup, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1The problem is people don't give a ***** about stuff that they don't think effects them or understand. For example most people are satisfied with a cell phone that is locked down and a two year contract if they they get a free cell phone. Of course they are missing the bigger picture. When the masses are satisfied we are all locked into higher prices, monopolies, crummy service, and fewer services etc.
- lordshank, on 12/15/2007, -2/+2Hey ladies. Mr. RMS wants to free more than software.
http://www.stallman.org/extra/personal.html - smackhero, on 12/15/2007, -1/+1where the hell did you read that? nicotine isn't even that addictive. it's only marginally addictive physically, causing physical dependence in very few people, and doesn't provide hardly enough positive reinforcement to create psychological dependence.
it's most likely that most smokers are just addicted to the "act" of smoking--an oral fixation. scientists also suspect that people find smoking pleasurable because it burns your throat lining, causing your body to release dopamine as it repairs the tissue, not the effects of nicotine itself. after all, nicotine is only a very very mild stimulant and has negligible psychoactive effects.
most of all though, smoking is a social addiction. that is the primary reason it's so difficult for most smokers to quit unless they stop hanging around other smokers. cigarette smokers also have less incentive for quitting as it's a socially accepted addiction, often glamorized in the media, as well as being completely legal and widely available. the popular belief that nicotine is extremely physically addictive just contributes to the social forces that work against people trying to quit smoking. society tells people that they can't quit smoking because it's too addictive, and even create useless patches to further ingrain the idea that quiting is unfeasible. - EvilAnimator, on 12/15/2007, -8/+8Cory Doctorow needs to take a chill pill. The man has DRM Derangement Syndrome. What a boring dullard he's become. His whole professional life is consumed with this. He's like the anti-DRM version of a PETA wacko or a tree hugger.
- sanman, on 12/15/2007, -3/+3Unfortunately, Cory's opinions of himself are generally pretty over-inflated.
- m31x, on 05/26/2008, -0/+0drm must die
- ellisfrancoaj, on 06/01/2008, -0/+0california yellow pages
http://california-services.org - MrViklund, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1Nothing is defective by design. It's like saying, the society is stupid because I'm not rich or what ever. It's designed the way it is and that is how it's designed. A car is not defective by design because it can't fly like a helicopter. It is what it is.
- MrViklund, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1Stop work for the corporations then. You do have a choice.
Without greed, we would not be were we are today since no one would have anything to strive towards. Money is the only thing that really motivates people one once said. Think about that for a second. - iota, on 12/15/2007, -4/+3I hate stupid corporations as much as the next guy, and I respect Cory for his work, but I have to say that all that DefectiveByDesign has done is raise Cory Doctorow's awareness of DefectiveByDesign, not to raise the publics awareness of DRM.
- skinjester, on 12/15/2007, -1/+0become?
- blueblazer17, on 12/15/2007, -4/+3this is just an ad for DbD. snore.
- fyngyrz, on 12/15/2007, -5/+3Ok. Here's how it works. The companies want DRM so they can control the IP. To achieve this, they pay (bribe) lawmakers on both sides of the aisle with money, junkets here and there, "companionship", jobs with "thinktanks", as lobbyists, and so forth. In return, the lawmakers craft ever more restrictive laws. They do this as a group.
Now. How *exactly* do you think you can break that cycle? Electing your local guy won't do it. They're misbehaving as a group. Talking about it won't do it. It's the law. You can't out-bribe the corporations, and you can't make congress behave. So what are you going to do?
They *want* you to form groups and shout and carry on. They really do. That way, they know your energies are used up in useless pursuits. That's why you'll always be free to do this. - MYarms, on 12/14/2007, -14/+10Here's some insight. People that aren't geeks don't give a flying ***** about DRM. They just want their music to come to them as easy as possible.
- OhFrak, on 12/14/2007, -8/+2Thought this was about the Xbox 360 and RRoD...
- OceanSoul, on 12/14/2007, -11/+0Why don't share?
