- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Gotta love Intel's aggressiveness. This is a win for consumers.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Heaven forbid a company raises the specs on their machines! Nobody ever complains when Dell, Compaq, HP, and every other manufacturer in the world does the same thing.
You can't expect any computer you buy to be top of the line for more than a few weeks. Besides, its not like your iMac will slow down and stop working because there's a new version out. - dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Every new intel processor starts out around $1000.
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm glad that this article links to a really reliable source.

This is the first time I've ever heard a Mac user talking about upgrading their computer. I was always under the impression that you guys simply throw out your outdated hardware and just buy the new rendition, like with successive generations of iPods.
I'm not joking, that's seriously the impression I get from Apple users, which is probably because Apple ensured over the years to condition their customers to do just that. - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11sorry, wrong place. digg down.
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7MBP's are hot enough already. You want one to melt to your leg or something?
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@brstilson
AMEN! product lines are meant to be updated. otherwise they'd be behind the times and, more notably, out of business.
but the questions still lingers: can i just plug this chip in a core duo socket like the core 2 duos? this is especially important for imac/mac mini users, since they were able to simply swap up to the core 2 duo while somehow generating less heat and consuming less power.
anyone know? - charpster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4so if you have windows, but its for a 1-2 processor computer. do you have to buy a new license for your quad core?
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, I should have added that I had heard about it also, but a story by arstechnica or something would be a little more respectable.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no reference to dual core in the name. The 2 in Core 2 means it is the second generation of "core" chips, not a dual core.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3>This is the first time I've ever heard a Mac user talking about upgrading their computer.
No way.. people have been doing processor upgrades for Macs for a LONG time...even powerpc macs had people doing processor upgrades.
I am waiting for the socketM Core2 Duo's to come down into the - ihaterobots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2most people do more than one thing at a time while working on a pc. your os is taking clock cycles, your background music, your photoshop rendering, your e-mail polling, your rss feeds, etc.
with more cores, all of those things can happen at once, instead of sharing a single processor and waiting for free clock cycles. so when you actually click something, you get it to happen faster. the new operation has a better chance of having an available processing core.
some more modern os's and apps are also designed to share single processes across multiple cores by distributing operations across the free cycles of each available core. thus, adding cores divides the time it takes to complete a job.
arguably, the biggest need for multiple cores lies in the server area. web requests, database procedures, and operating system calls all happening at the same time, all the time. but it'll certainly speed up day to day work as well. - SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea, I know that Inquirer news should be taken with a grain of salt, but there have been several other reports that the QX6700 would be released in November. Heck, HardOCP and other sites have already previewed the QX6700's performance benchmarks.
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea it should be about a grand. The Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 is right around $950 right now in most places.
- tritium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This might cost an arm and a leg, but gotta ask how this will affect the pricing of their single and dual core processors. My instinct is that the prices of those chips will go down somewhat. We can hope, right? Either way its a win for consumers.
- slithy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually there is already a processor called that...the Motorola 68000
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/68000 - xswag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 will drop to half price since it will already be out dated. I would be happy with that.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3probably. and have we learned our lesson yet?
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if this chip will be too hot for the existing iMacs... and if so, will Apple beef up the architecture to cool things off inside the case...?
Maybe we'll now see the Core 2 Duo become the base chip level of modern Intel processors and the Core Duo disappear. Maybe a Mac Mini refresh will be coming shortly. - Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya know, NinjaBar, your machine isn't going to slow down just because these new chips are out. At least you have a Core 2, which can run 64-bit stuff; my original Core isn't 64-bit capable, so its obsolescence (defined as the inability to run the latest software) will be substantially sooner.
Oh heck, you're right. Rush right out and buy one of these! I'll dispose of your old chip for you. - there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Anyone have time for a quick synopsis how this compares to Core Duo? - AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can those in the know tell me exactly what software exploits the benefits of the dual core chip now? Have we successfully moved all major applications/OSs to the point where we can use the dual core to its full potential and are now ready to conquer the quad core world? I know that chips always get faster, so I assume that is runs everything faster, but I'm just wondering about the multiple core aspect.
- benb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good point. Does Vista have limitation on the number or CPU's/Cores the machine can have depending on the version? That would be dumb considering the way CPU's are made today.
- zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gonna have to drop in a couple of those into my Mac Pro. 8 core goodness!!
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wanna know when we'll see a quad-core xeon.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man, it's such a bad time to buy a PC. First it was this, Core 2 Quad, next will be Windows Vista and DirectX 10 video cards.
But, it's also a good time if you are looking for something fast, cheap, and don't mind being behind the times. Core 2 Duo prices will fall near infinite times. - Yanks2435, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Adstretch: It is LGA 775. Socket M is for Merom only so far, they would not release C2Quad for it.
- dpcamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"MBP's are hot enough already. You want one to melt to your leg or something?"
that makes no sense considering the core 2 duos run cooler than the core duos... - sdoorex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget Folding @ Home. =)
- Yanks2435, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah it is way better. Core Duo is meant for laptops, this is a desktop chip. You will see huge boosts in video and audio encoding, and gaming too if you have the graphics power. The performance boost is big over the Core Duo, and even decent over the Core 2 Duo.
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ihaterobots:
I appreciate your description. What I'd really like to know is if any software actually uses these capabilities and, if so, which apps? The reason I ask is: 1) I'd like to try some of them out; 2) If there are few, I wonder then if all this core talk is more marketing hype than actual value? I only say that because if we have quad cores coming out now and we've yet to even exploit the potential of the dual cores, did we all just buy chips for no real reason? My ignorance doesn't allow me to make an informed decision.
Again, thanks for the description. - rockorager, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2November is the best month ever:
Final Fantasy III for the DS
Quad core processors
Wii!!
PS3 (if you're into that stuff)
Guitar Hero 2
Let's just say I am going to fail out of college because of November 06...as well as going extra poor due to all these upgrades - Yanks2435, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Windows XP has a limit on the number of SOCKETS, not cores. Having two different sockets isn't the same as having 2 cores on one processor.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually what you'll see in the Mac Pro are the Clovertowns, the upcoming quad-core Xeons. Which is probably what you meant, but I'd thought I'd make the distinction between those and the Core 2 Quads.
- count_z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You'd also only get, like, an hour of battery life at best. These chips aren't meant for the mobile segment (the use about as much current as the P4 Xeons). You'll definately see them in the Mac Pro though.
- ihaterobots, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1isn't this release date only applicable to people who enjoy purchasing HP products? what with the exclusivity agreement they got with intel and all...
just makes all the mac upgrade talk kind of a moot point until at least january. - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, yeah.
But I'd heard from other places (which I can't remember now, sorry -- from some of the regular PC magazines I read), that Intel was going to be ready with the Quads just about now. - adstretch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will probably fit the socket for the Desktop version of the core solo, duo 2 duo, but i doubt this is going to be Socket M for a few reasons.
1) 4 cores, despite all the heat advances the core 2 architecture achieved, is still going to be too hot for a laptop, plain and simple (unless you like a huge laptop with lots of heatsinks and fans)
2) the socket M is only 667MHz FSB, the quad configuration loses a ton of potential being squeezed through that relatively narrow bus. where as the desktop models of all the current processors have an ~ 1GHz FSB. which are more fully able to take advantage of the multiple cores.
That said, if they make a socket M i would snatch one up in a second and throw it in my mac mini, for a little guy it would be one hell of a desktop. - thehumangame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK people. Laptops will not get quad-core chips anytime soon. Apple desktops will not get quad-core chips anytime soon. Nor will you be able to upgrade your Apple desktop or laptop to a quad-core chip. Why? Apple uses the MOBILE version of Core 2 in its desktops.
This is not a mobile chip. Four cores produce way too much heat to work in such a configuration. Also the 667MHz FSB used in the mobile configuration would constrain the performance of a quad-core chip anyway.
Mac Pro will probably get an option to use quad-core Xeons at some point. The other machines will have to wait for Intel to move to a smaller fabrication process in order to get the heat dissipation down enough to be usable. This will take time. - thehumangame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0November 13th is the release date for Clovertown (the quad core Xeon).
- Blizaine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I can't wait for the Core 2 Octo 9'r
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Quad Core 2 Two Quad Duo Single Quad.
- Kiljoy001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ilyag: It's been that way for a while now ever since before g3 - you can replace the original processors made by third parties... this is in fact the last vestiges of mac clone days. In the past they didn't always work well by now they are fairly reliable, for instance, my poor old G4 Dual/450MHz can be upgrade to a dual 1. something Ghz. Sure it still uses slower sdram, but it can hold up to 2 gigs of it. and the in built hard drive controller cannot address drives over 120 GB, but I can get a controller card or external firewire hard drives to surpass those limitations and other ones using the pci slots and just about everyone knows that you can get just about any additonal functionality with pci cards.
It's fact that macs are often not replaced with new models as frequently as PCs, because they can be upgraded (esp. the CPU which has been on a easy to replace daughter card) by a knowlegeable owner.
So if you want to have a taste of OS x on the cheap, but a used g4 sawtooth off eBay, upgrade it on your own dime and have fun until apple drops support for PPC (which they will eventually) which won't happen for some time I think. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4People who complain that $600 is too much to pay for a PS3 need not apply...
This ***** ought to cost what, about a thousand bucks? - weprin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'll wait for the Triple Octal Quad Core 2 Quintuple before I buy another processor. They're releasing new CPUs so fast these days! Pretty soon, they will be announcing the 68000 core processor. Maybe they will just call it the 68000. ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2im waiting for these to hit the macbook pros
- digitalbryan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I'm all happy about the new chips Intel is coming out with, but c'mon. Who the hey is picking out these names over their? So the new quad core will be a dual core? This just doesn't add up. They need to shorten the name and remove any reference to dual if it's actually a quad. Consumers are already confused enough.
- Blizaine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1no delete :(
- R3doubt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Still not as powerful as my OoGhiJ MiQtxxXA.
