- alekdigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+77Thanks for tossing into DIGG Randy - as noted on the page, I still have more lights to put up, so I might have held off for a few more days, but sure, bring on the DIGG crowd. Lights do go OUT at 10:00 MST (2.5 hours from now), but would be a great stress test to hit the front page - WOOT! ;-)
alek - the dude who's house you guys are all looking at and controlling ... - blastradius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+77This guy's real statement is "Screw Web 2.0!"
This is a throwback to Web 0.7.2. - dunn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46Hahahaha, this website's out of control
- alekdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43Lights are out as it is 10:00 - come back at 5:00PM MST tomorrow for more Christmas Lights fun. And yes, still more stuff to be put up - everything should be done by Monday.
BTW, this real-time application is load-balanced across FOUR 100 Mbps Linux servers running Apache with mod_perl (one for main page, plus one for each webcam) - so it stands a decent chance of holding up to the DIGG effect - my neighbors might wonder what the h*ll is going on though! ;-)
And thanks for mentioning the charity aspect for Celiac Disease. - Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Just wait till this hits the homepage. The neighbors will probably go mad by all the lights going on and off constantly.
- waveman216, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40My cursor is Santa. How awesome is that?!!!
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Wait til we find out that *that* website is a decoy, and he actually has all the "inflate/deflate" controls hooked up to explosives somewhere...
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29needs more blink tag
- alekdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20WOW - I wake up and "Christmas LIghts for Celiac Disease" is on the front page of DIGG - yikes!
Kinda a bummer because the lights won't be on for another 9 hours or so ... it's a LOT more fun then ... although I'll be putting up some lights later today.
Good skeptism poolguy - read the definitive writeup on the great Christmas Lights Hoax of 2004 here - http://www.komar.org/christmas/hoax/ - 100% simulation then.
100% real from 2005 on - media was more careful but agreed it's real - read more at http://www.komar.org/christmas/2005/news/ - for example, since you reference the 2004 WashPost article, here's what they wrote in 2005 - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/05/AR2005120502003.html - poolguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19But is it real this time?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32286-2004Dec28.html - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21it's not like he's trying to sell ferraris, it's a house decked out with stuff you can screw with on the internet. it could be web -5.20948 for all i care.
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16How much does this cost the guy in electricity + server cost + bandwidth? I hope he's not going in to the poor house giving us something to mess with over the holidays.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again"
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18An annual tradition it's become. As an athiest and a geek, this is my 'Christmas' tree. :)
- edge001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12did you see the window to IM the laptop in the guy's office?
somebody typed "jerking it under the robe" while the dude was sitting at the desk in his bathrobe...
i shouldn't be laughing at that - the website is to raise money for a disease that his kids have... great website. - Poopoopants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This site looks so scrambled it's awesome! Nice work.
- pickupjojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12We'll use http://duggmirror.com ...
I'm just kiddin'. :) - oneofmanysteves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Who put coal up your ass this holiday season?
- LucianSolaris, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12NO NO NO NO NO don't click the google ads. that'll worsen his payout if thousands click but no one buys!
this was on digg a while ago. clicking ads does NOT help webmasters. it negatively affects their click:buy ratio by having the clicks skyrocket compared to the purchases from those clicks!
only click those google ads if you think the guy is a bastard. otherwise, if you love the site, help by either not clicking on them or (even better) use adblock, so it doesn't fuxor his ad view:click ratio! - oneofmanysteves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It feels like mission control for total insanity, I love it.
- KeyLimePie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Christmas 2.0?
- anesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'd love to see the impact of the digg effect on his utillity bill.
- stewart1988, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You can already. At the top it says "Santa-Homer Cursor: Remove" Sorted :D
- WinMacLin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Very nice :)
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7From the maker of http://www.watching-paint-dry.com
- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9My EYES! Ze goggles do nothing!!
just playing with ya. awesome stuff :) - diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The site itself looks like its made up of old christmas decorations, all thrown together. I'm guessing thats the effect he was going for.
- alekdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I had to fiddle with the Perl code a bit, but I have turned on the X10 controls for the inflatables ONLY - you can't see the lights, so no sense in having you control those until tonight. Have fun with Elmo, Frosty, Santa ... and Homer Simpson - D'OH!
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4..it seems like faking the thing would be far harder and more complicated than acctual doing it..
Not setting up the X11 controller interface, but instead (somehow) adding CG planes, adding in fake cars randomly etc, but still setting up all the lights (Probably the hardest part..), makes no sense..
- Ben - bmson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hahaha...
guys are hitting on his wife.
niceee... - knetch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for supporting celiac research! I'd kill for a Pillsbury biscuit. Hmmm... killing for disease research...
- tobtoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the subject of remote controlled things, does anyone remember several years ago some guy autmoated almost everything in his house and hooked it up to the Internet. Not so much that people could control what happened in his house, but more that you could see how many times people rang his doorbell (including web cam shots), what food needed reordering in his fridge etc? I've google searched for it and can't find anything.
Second 'automation' site which I'm trying to find was some guy who hooked up the thermostat in his apartment (or possible dorm room ) to the internet. Visitors could increase the temperature by +/- 0.1 deg. Does anyone remember what site that was at? - Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is this house in the Denver area? I want to drive the family by the check it out sometime, since we live in Denver.
- kstar6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This guy is totally legit, the first year was a hoax, but its for reals since then. We should all donate a few bucks for the sweet entertainment!
- Randy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's in Boulder, CO.
- soccerpmn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5People, if you can't donate, you can still show you care by clicking on one or two google ads. Sure its only a few cents, but its better than nothing.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Alek is definitely for real - he's been supporting the research for Celiac disease for quite a while now - and uses his creative skills for this great cause. Very nice piece of work.
- mcottier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is that the incredible hulk in the top left balcony?
- aviano2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do hope that someone gets a screenshot if somehow, someone, convinces Alek to put the shoe on his head. Goodness knows, enough of us have asked.
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We killed his laptop message display. :)
- kdubbz6688, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn does this guy have a fiber connection running to his house or somthing? Verizon Fios anyone?
- Xyleene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That website crashed my Firefox on Ubuntu... mabey it was my fault.. but somehow I doubt it by the look of that website!
- alekdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys had fun with the inflatables, but the sun is starting to set, so I turned on the light controls a bit early tonight - please provide quite the *blinking* light show for the neighbors ... ;-)
- patrickloggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The laptop's dead.
- dustindikes, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Hah I like the "Welcome Diggers'" message that pops up :D
- AzBaja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what X10 program is he using to do all this? Not the normal junk you get from x10 dot com
Way cool, looking for a program like this so I can dump the x10 program junk, thanks and great to still have hope. - macamatition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats it for tonight's lights...
- lumpymambo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great idea, but way too many people going at it at once...
- Endies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best thing ever? I say atleast for today!
- kdubbz6688, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats awsome, this guy really gets into xmas!
