- Vorin, on 11/17/2008, -1/+85OH NO! I'd better get that update for my XP Antivirus 2008 RIGHT NOW!
- davidtowers, on 11/17/2008, -3/+82Wanna know why? ==> "Data from 2007 showed that the high point of action from viruses, worms and other internet-based attacks came three days before America's Thanksgiving holiday, leading them to suggest that the same day could prove the bleakest 24 hours of this year."
Let's be honest, not too much to be afraid of... - Anub1s, on 11/17/2008, -2/+75Horray! More things to make people freak out. Come on media, knock it the ***** off.
- NegativeDigg, on 11/17/2008, -2/+62Sweet, I'll make extra money for x-mas fixing computers.
- Dinsdale77, on 11/17/2008, -0/+57As if Monday didn't already suck balls.
- musntSurfatWork, on 11/17/2008, -3/+46luckily I use red cat-5 cables, so it'll passover.
- robbie32, on 11/17/2008, -0/+34I'm gonna go update to Common Sense 2009 Ultimate Edition.
- TheBigBad, on 11/17/2008, -1/+26You have to love the media and their constant headlines of fear, speculation, and uncertainty. At this point I just say ***** it, whatever will be will be.
- chuckDontSurf, on 11/17/2008, -1/+18Also on that day, if you flash your lights at someone you'll get shot as part of a gang initiation.
- jeddyftb, on 11/17/2008, -1/+16fearmongering
- Aurabolt, on 11/17/2008, -33/+48Sweet, just switched to Ubuntu a few days ago (loving it by the way).
- keyboardduder, on 11/17/2008, -0/+13The demographic is probably just about the lonely people who aren't having thanksgiving, looking to porn sites to make up for it.
"I just downloaded a video codec! I'm not doing anything wrong..."
(That one always cracks me up) - jamesmlemieux, on 11/17/2008, -3/+15I own systems with XP, Vista, OS X, and Ubuntu. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with Ubuntu's performance on a laptop. After adding AWN and an OS X theme it even looked like my Mac. Not sure why you're being dug down; changing to a more secure (or less targeted) OS is a valid way to prevent attack - even MS makes the claim as a reason to switch to Vista (which is more secure than XP by far, but annoying as hell and still a bit quirky/buggy)
- WombleSlayer, on 11/17/2008, -1/+13To be honest you kind of deserve to have your PC infected when you download Obama's acceptance speech in an .exe format from some random person on the internet, when it's easily avaliable on YouTube in an actual video format.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -2/+13Great news I just upgraded to DOS 5.3! Much more secure and stable than 5.2
- kurtless, on 11/17/2008, -0/+10No worrys, I'm on a Mac
- bcbrin20, on 11/17/2008, -3/+12Ubuntu...fast, reliable, oh and free too
- JonForTheWin, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Computer virus? Try windows virus
- bigsteve, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7You don't need the ultimate edition. I just have the Common edition. It's kept me 100.0% malware free on all platforms I use for over 6 years now. (last infection was Blaster worm on XP Gold/SP0; not really my fault)
Best gift the 'rents have ever given me. - tidu, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7The killer bee's whats are coming?
- nkassi, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7meh, home edition is more than most have
- Clbull, on 11/17/2008, -1/+7Yeah right, I think that the majority of Digg users actually use Windows.
- YodaJones, on 11/17/2008, -4/+10And Linux users yawn again. Boring.
- borez, on 11/17/2008, -3/+9Guardian ***** scare propaganda. Come on people the antiquemedia outlets just love planting this kind of thing, it makes them feel all savvy and *****.
- billizm, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Oh no, not the worst day the year.
- TekTrixter, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Solution to video codec issues: VLC
If I hadn't shown some people how to use VLC I'd still be fixing their computers every few weeks - Harabeck, on 11/17/2008, -3/+8Honestly, I bet that if we had numbers on the subject, Digg would have a higher percentage of non-windows users than the general public, but that they would still not be in the majority.
And come on, your statement is pretty fanboyish, grow up. - petebot, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Wu-Tang!
- petebot, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry but I don't believe any news about email viruses unless it's forwarded to me by my mother.
- wukillabee, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5A flood of emails purporting to link to a video of Obama's acceptance speech were actually connected to a trojan horse program which would compromise the target's PC. Meanwhile, a separate burst of spam messages contained a file called BarackObama.exe, which, when activated, places a rootkit on the victim's machine and opens it up to hackers around the world.
o thats how.. email.. like every other virus.. dont people learn anything?? - smackydoodle, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5In my current course we have studied how many news articles, whether they are on television/internet/print, are actual paid advertisements in the form of a serious news story. Most of these type "warnings" are actually from a major security software supplier in hopes of increasing revenue.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Nothing to see here, move it along.
- Gr00ver, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4The killer bee's are coming!
- doctechnical, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Debbie Reynolds? Is that you?
- jmuncy, on 11/17/2008, -1/+5Wait and see if the day doesn't get the name of "Black Monday"
- smotpoker, on 11/17/2008, -1/+4"And come on, your statement is pretty fanboyish, grow up."
No yours is! ;)
For real though, he said Windows *newbs*. IE not technically inclined and running windows and his statement is accurate. Most digg users are likely fairly proficient with computers and, if they are unfortunate enough to be running Windows, likely have nothing to worry about.
His statement is correct, it primarily only affects Windows newbs, not OSX newbs, BSD newbs, Linux newbs, or (probably) advanced Windows users. Don't read more into it than what he said - KloroFormd, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Upgrade to 2009!
- Causemos, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Yup, those computer virus makers keep to a calendar
- graemee, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Are they still doing that fake codec stuff? I remember when almost every torrent site was full of those.
- tearmeapart, on 11/17/2008, -3/+6I would actually bet on there being less spam and virii due to McColo being disconnected:
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.org.operators.nan ...
http://www.spamcop.net/spamgraph.shtml?spammonth
(Notice the sudden drop since McColo was disconnected.)
Sorry network and computer people. Looks like you will have to spend your time with your family instead of making overtime money. - sodypop77, on 11/17/2008, -1/+4Congrats, you should follow these instructions:
Mac 101: Enabling Built-in Spell Check
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/05/07/mac-101-enabling-bu ... - GilThielander, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3"...It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it."
--classic mother-in-law forward - Visual77, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3All you needed was linux, the rest doesn't matter at that point.
- Scotty87, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3I have to say, great comments!
for the post... not so much. - junkneo, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Why start paranoia. This article is aimed at studying people behavior. With Digg being the remote gold mine.
Some tips anyway (for every day browsing as well):
1. Use Opera or Firefox.
2. Do not be greedy.
3. Control urges (porn including, for one day at least). - Harabeck, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3This is the internet, more specifically, this is digg, he should make damn sure he's clear in what he means.
- Skooma714, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Don't open attachments, use Firefox and use SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D
I don't even get tracking cookies anymore. It's boring actually. - theOster, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2and who (amongst those that *are* comp savvy) installs spyware blockers??
- jjustin01, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Looks like the antivirus companies are prepping for Black Friday. Sales must be slow for them right now.
- webweave, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Spoken like Mr. Bill G. himself. "What can your computer do for me today?"
