- misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Uh, in my area, there's only cable company. There is no choice. The only other option is satellite. What is this going to tell me that I don't already know?
- silicon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Inaccurate for my area, not showing a service that I am currently using.
- SteveyDevey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This looks more like an ad than anything worthwhile. Am I just missing something? I mean, sure, I can get one cable company and a couple of sattelites, but that's not news to me.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ah, it took a little reading to figure out what the hell this was... It's a price comparison service... they want your address in order to cnnect to the various databases of these company providers, to compare and contrast pricing plans IN YOUR AREA to allow you to shop for what works best... not a bad article actually... I was about to file it under spame... but it doesn't look like they are looking to scam money...
- ogre2112, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whitefence is a company that you can have hook up all your utilities when you move into a new house. They handle all of it in one call and charge something like 5 bucks.
I used them when I moved into my current apartment, because I was to busy that day to make the 5 phone calls, etc. - PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Marked as inaccurate since it doesn't list a cable company that is available in my area...which is the one I'd be interested in switching to (since Comcast is Craptastic.)
- mjwedeking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where is FiOS TV?
- Inthraller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm.. for my area, it shows Dish and DirecTV and some other satellite carrier I've never heard of and does not show Cox, the only cable service in the area. Wow, I stand in awe of this great comparison. Lame ass lame.
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Definitely does not work. Around here our options are dish network, qwest, cox, and direcTV, and there might be more.
Funny how it only shows the satellite providers dish and direct, but doesn't show cox and qwest at all. - fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First off, I have to enter my information in the fields to the RIGHT not the LEFT. Second of all, it shows me only Dish Network. Where the ***** are the rest? I don't even use Dish, so I would think it would show me what I'm currently using as well, at least to seem viable.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks like a decent service... but this page is far too confusing... I dunno... I think I agree... definitely weird how fast it got to the front page... *shrug* I like it, even if it did take a bit of reading to figure out what it was.
- MrCoffee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There _are_ local competition in some areas. I can actually get Cox Cable, or MediaComm Cable... we have two cables running up to the house. Don't ask me why, it's the first neighborhood I've lived in that had both, but both it does have.
- simpletim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1completely innacurate. did not list verizon fios (which I have) or comcast.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Actually, upon reflection... I will DEFINITELY use this site, since I am moving in a few months... It's a pain in the ass to call all these companies... ONE website that populates ALL the forms? Sounds nice to me... Not to mention the price comparisons for whatever -is- available... (as long as it is accurate info, which looks like it might be a problem as addressed in Silicon's comment below...)
- theTall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad I can't pick more than one reason to bury this story. It's inaccurate, lame and most likely spam. I entered my neighbor's address so I won't get the junk mail (although I get junk mail from all the cable/satellite companies now).
- election, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here ya go: http://digg.com/tech_news/Global_Satellite_Internet_Service_Provider_List
- ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and we all realise the site is making it's money by selling your address to the cable companies?
site admin: want to know what households are interested in cable service?
cable services: sure! we'll pay you to collect their addresses!
site admin: done and done. - ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How is this supposed to work in the US? The government allows cable companies to be monopolies, we have no choice, either we take whatever the cable company in our area offers or we go to satellite. you gotta love govt sponsored theft.....
- ajamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1would be useful if your cable operator didn't have a regional monopoly
we used to be covered by TCI Cable
who were bought out by ATT Cable
who were bought out by Comcast
and the rates went way up each time - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Either they manipulated the system or digg is getting paid to advertise this site. No way this hit the front page in 3 hours legitimately.
- promixr, on 04/13/2009, -0/+0As a taxpayer and consumer of cable television I am calling on the FCC to regulate cable television providers and remove the obstacles to 'A La Carte' cable television service. Subscribers should be able to choose individual networks that they would like to subscribe to without having to buy costly 'packages.' Subscribers should also be able to discontinue channels that are included with basic packages of channels they are not watching, or whose content they deem dangerous, offensive or otherwise dissatisfying.
This change to the rules of cable television would be good for the industry:
a) it would inspire more competitive programming, stations with the most informative or enjoyable content would remain on, stations whose content is uninformative would go away.
b) Cable would become more family friendly, as parents could permanently unsubscribe from cable programming they deem unsuitable for their children, without sacrificing channels that are harmless.
c) advertisers would have a better gauge of effective programming, the networks could charge more money for ad time on most watched networks, sponsorship becomes more effective, products could be targeted more effectively.
d) consumers could make political statements through subscription, (for example, viewers who object to the propaganda they see on FOX or CNBC could switch that channel off- providing in effect a check and balance to ineffective or just plain 'wrong' media coverage, broadcasters of 'news' programming would be forced to adhere to high standards of broadcast journalism)
e) consumers would have access to a broader range of entertainment, by spending money on only the media they wish to view. A consumer currently may not subscribe to an entire expensive cable package to view the content of a particular cable channel, so that consumer is cut off from it. Cable television would benefit because while the 'packages' would go away, subscribers would make up for it in the individual variety of a la carte subscriptions. A sports nut would be turning off food networks, but adding sports channels, a sci-fi nut would be turning off children's programming, but subscribing to more movie channels, etc...
The FCC needs to overcome, through regulation, the objections of cable television lobbying groups and large media providers and serve the best interests of the consumer of media. The best and most progressive way to do this is through a La Carte cable television. - fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2tocard,
Not to rain on your parade, but this site works like *****! It only shows me one satellite company. Now, I know for a fact that there's more than one provider in my area for two reasons. One, because I'm using a provider other than what's listed and two, because I can do my own research. I know from personal searching there are others in my area. Obviously they are getting paid from these providers in order for them to get listed on their site. Maybe they should add a Paypal Donation link on their site so we can pay them for better research... - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To the parent: My area has plenty of competition.
I know that some areas don't, but there might be providers you're overlooking. - FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GODAMNIT... I KNOW RIGHT!?!?!
Forget the TV part... where is my FIOS INTERNET??? - reviewcentre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I used to be subscribed to sky but it began to get expensive so cancelled my subscription. However just the other week I found a review on squidoo about getting satellite tv on your pc for free, except it wasn't for free it was $49.95 but that was half what I was paying monthly with sky, was now receiving the same & more channels, and I haven't had to pay anything else since! The review can be found at http://www.squidoo.com/Satellite-Tv-On-Pc-Review
Hope it helps you as much it has saved me time & money! - SirPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only way that the cable service would be 40$ more for the same service, is if dish/direct was on some promo, if you compare full price for full price, you will find that most of the time they are even or one is slightly more. where I am the full price of the package on cable for every single channel is about 75$ a month, the same channels, local and all, on dish is 89.99 and then 5$ more for locals, and direct is 99.99 + 7$ for the locals. so before you run your mouth, look around first.
- rogerdavis, on 06/25/2008, -0/+0Cable got way to expensive and satellite has a lot of choices but you have to pay to get the premium channels. I found a cool alternative at http://www.squidoo.com/watch-tv-on-satellite-tv-fo ...
- Using it for a week so far and loving it - mrdctaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dead. Oh well. I already know the info for my own area. I have Dish Network and was calling the cable company to switch off my cable modem (got DSL) and they tried to show me how their package pricing would help me. Just the TV service alone was $40 more than Sattelite for identical service. The thing they really rape you on is DVR service. Wow. I think most cable companies take their customers for morons.
- SirPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I happen to work at the cable company I get free service from and they don't list the company at all and say dish is my only choice, this site is stupid.
- danlm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I was with a provider but cancelled it and got satelliet tv for pc after reading a review. Here's the review if you're interested: http://www.squidoo.com/free_satellite_tv_for_pc/ - Working good for me so far.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Wow! Now if there was only a service that would let me compare cell phone providers!!!"
[Awful. There are plenty of these types of sites around, no real value gained.] - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Well - then that DOES present a dilemma!
Better give these guys your bank account numbers too... - Fyro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0US ONLY, put that in your title!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Classic gaming of Digg. The masses are stupid, everyone knows that
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Er.. been on the front page for less then 5 minutes and it stopped working already oO
- binaryspiral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0It's a trick question - there is no comparing cable providers because there is no local competition. This is another crap article.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1What do they want my address for???
File under "Marketing Crap"!!

What is Digg?
