- Cossa, on 11/03/2007, -1/+91I guess my problem with this is, there are tons of legitimate uses of P2P protocols (ie torrents). One major example is the 9+ million World of Warcraft players who get their updates through a built-in bittorrent client.
- wild, on 11/03/2007, -2/+88My choices are pretty much Comcast or Comcast.
Sucks. - rwalker351, on 11/01/2007, -3/+77I wish the US government would force Comcast and other cable operators to open their lines like they did to DSL. Then we'd all finally be able to switch off of Comcast and have a choice!
- gullevek, on 11/03/2007, -0/+62Sometimes I ask myself if America is not the Soviet Russia of Communications? If this would happen here in Japan, I could immediatly switch to at least 6 different carriers and/or providers ...
- austin63, on 11/03/2007, -4/+52dont have another alternative :(
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -1/+34Sounds like AOL all over again.
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -16/+48Don't use Comcast.
- chrismgtis, on 10/31/2007, -2/+28"Therefore, we do not know whether any individual user is visiting BitTorrent or any other site.""
You don't "visit" BitTorrent. It is not a site. - Jazzillion, on 10/30/2007, -3/+28The first rule of blocking P2P is....
- headphonedude, on 10/31/2007, -0/+24Does anyone ever feel like we're starting to go backwards?
- Ninnux, on 10/29/2007, -3/+26@wild
I live in Philly. You should see the Comcast tower being built in Center City. It'll be Philly's tallest by a lot. Here, there is only one real choice: Comcastic. My office is near that building. You should see the Comcast douchebag suits. Unbelievable. - Sicness, on 10/31/2007, -3/+25Yes because it's so cool to be a gamer.
- missingnoh4x, on 10/29/2007, -0/+22I actually contacted customer support and told them that any time I try to use any torrent protocol I get hit with RST packets, and asked how to resolve this problem. I was expecting them to deny that this was on their end, or tell me to ***** off. In an even more bizarre response than I anticipated, they told me how to set up a wireless router. Uh, was anybody even listening or is that just a form letter they send to any customer support query about anything?
- All4not, on 10/30/2007, -1/+21Pick your poison. Only AT&T or Comcast in my area. :(
- jcaino, on 10/31/2007, -0/+20so glad i dont work there anymore. they ***** on their reps and ask them to lie to customers all the time about outages, etc. and their system status page NEVER reflects actual downtime. about 3 months ago they had an 8 hour outage that at first they claimed was not on their end (their reverse routes were failing) after about 8 hours of downtime for east and west coast customers, they finally admitted to a problem, and claimed it was a router in washington (state) and that downtime was only an hour. east cost traffic and texas traffic was definitely not being routed through washington to reach another east coast destination. they suck.
- BRODEL, on 10/29/2007, -1/+17Moving is a very drastic step just to get another broadband carrier for most people. I can't say I haven't thought about it, but spending that much money and time finding a new home in an area with something like FIOS and trying to explain to the wife that I want to move so we can get off comcast and on to FIOS or DSL will most likely not go over too well.
- monkeyvoodoo, on 10/31/2007, -1/+17It is. And it's getting worse as time goes on. Guess that's what happens when corporations get to make the laws...
- Hockey37, on 11/02/2007, -3/+19Yea, let me just pick up and move to another state to avoid Comcast.
Moron. - otaku22, on 10/29/2007, -0/+16Or the NeoOffice/OpenOffice or Linux distro's that are on torrents.
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -1/+15Anyone who owns Comcast stock really should sell their share off in protest. And let their stock drop $20+ in a single day. And let's see how they react when the public says 'screw you'.
Those who use cable broadband ... I TOLD YA DSL RULES. - LOVEgoesMLM, on 10/29/2007, -0/+13This is exactly why I love digg. Companies that lie need to be exposed.
- Nougat, on 10/31/2007, -4/+17in Soviet Russia, you fire Comcast!
... wait ... - AaronCo, on 10/31/2007, -2/+15This is just another reason why we should always encrypt our traffic. You cannot trust your ISP to be fair, honest or even decent... and with an effective monopoly all around the US, there's no reason for them to ever change.
- ismith, on 10/31/2007, -0/+13And in japan if this was happening, it would be because their lines were getting tied up around 500mbps, not 6...
- MWeather, on 10/29/2007, -6/+19I would love to hear your plan for increasing competition in a monopoly without government intervention.
- MWeather, on 10/29/2007, -2/+14I seem to recall my city paying the cable companies plenty of money for last-mile service.
- williamdyer, on 10/29/2007, -0/+12The big ISPs should be broken up so there is more competition, and last-mile access should be open (structural separation) to any provider.
- ismith, on 10/29/2007, -0/+11You sir, owe a story to Consumerist...
- StarlessKnight, on 10/29/2007, -0/+10Not unusual for a company like Comcast currently involved in a potential legal disaster. Same thing happened with AT&T's representatives when a 3rd party lost a laptop with consumer data that may or may not have been compromised. One wrong word, one slip, and Comcast could end up in trouble; that's what they're afraid of.
- lore, on 10/29/2007, -2/+12Yes it! :-) *ducks*
http://www.bittorrent.com/ - ismith, on 10/29/2007, -0/+9Comcast is the only provider in my area besides a $80/month family owned cable business that's extremely slow.
- MWeather, on 10/29/2007, -0/+9What we need is incentive for them to NOT do this kind of *****. The only way to do that is to have multiple providers in the same market. Moving across the country to see if I like another monopoly better is not a solution.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/31/2007, -0/+9Man, with all the awesome stuff you have on TV in Japan (like the human tetris and the fully nude symphony!) why would you even worry too much about internet access?
I'd be entertained endlessly watching your TV as is. You should see TV here in America - no originality, everyone is copying everyone else... it's sad. I quit watching TV here in the USA about 13 years ago. - drmangrum, on 10/29/2007, -0/+8No, we need cable companies to maintain a presence in ALL markets. This play-nice policy they have where they don't tread on each others territory what's causing all the problems. There is no competition. They know they have the consumers by the short hairs. Until Comcrap, Time-warner, and the other cable providers are in the same markets and forcing each other to compete, we're forced to have over-priced and under serviced cable.
- tHePeOPle, on 10/30/2007, -0/+8Austin63, not so fast man, you might have a couple of choices that you're not aware of. Most people think that the cable comapny, or phone company, are the only options they have. What they don't know is that there are usually one or two companies in the area that do wireless dsl. They put an antenna on your roof and high speed internet service is yours without the ***** of comcast or at&t. I just happened to spot on one of their service trucks driving around one day for the company in my area. Check the phone book and ask around. Don't give up!
- objectcode, on 10/29/2007, -2/+9i dont think i have comcast as a choice
- miles32, on 10/29/2007, -0/+7Well that may be true for where you live but out here I have never seen my DL go above 3mb and my DL hits maybe 1mb.
If there was competition in the market place your 30 bucks and mine would be going a lot further. - Hockey37, on 10/29/2007, -0/+7Sorry Roger, you tiger now.
- LOVEgoesMLM, on 10/29/2007, -1/+8Also companies that wrongfully terminate employees need to get BIG FINES. We should also have fun calling their 1-800#
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7NYC is one of the most densely populated cities on earth but we still only get 10 down and 512 up. I'm not so sure that the population density argument holds water. I guess if Farmer Bob living among the wheat fields can only get 5 down and 256 up that kinda makes sense. But what is the argument for slow speeds in NYC?
- HonoredMule, on 10/29/2007, -1/+8Better to have no one driving than someone asleep at the wheel.
- snek, on 10/31/2007, -1/+7Err, if you spend about 8 hours per day on a game I'd say you're pretty much a gamer.. To be honest, I'd rather have 15 year old kids spending that much time on a game than 35 year olds on welfare!! Trust me when I say there are plenty of those as well, I should know, having had a 70 lock with full T4 and having been officer in multiple guilds. Anyway, what do these kids do to your network with WoW which is so terrible? That measly update once every few months can hardly be a reason to block it's traffic!!
Btw, you also forget STEAM is also a bittorrent based distribution system for games.. Oh but wait, that's probably also full of 15 year old posers? Hahaha..
Seriously man, I don't know what your problem is but bashing the best game out there (I'm letting the numbers speak for itself), claiming that only 15 year olds who can't play but assume they can, is pretty lame.. What is your reason for this? You can't afford the game? Your hardware is too crappy to handle Gruul's Lair?
Mind you I stopped playing WoW as well, but I still think it's the best game out there.. Just the people who are still left playing after so many years get on my nerves since they all turned out to be lootwhores, whiners & have no backbone. Now I only play some TF2 with a group of about 20 people I know through WoW and we're kicking ass in that as well. [WFKA] When Fat Kids Attack!! - warsql, on 10/29/2007, -5/+11The government causes the monopoly. Other companies would love to service your cable and internet needs if your local government would allow it.
- rootnik, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6I know it sounds crazy, but a major factor in buying my house was whether or not there was DSL available in that area. I suffered through frequent downtime, terrible support, and antibittorrentness for 5 years with Mediacom (who I swear is a sister company of Comcast).
Yeah, I said 'antibittorrentness' ;) - drmangrum, on 10/29/2007, -0/+5You assume that companies need a reason to fire you. You can be fired from any job at any time for any reason EXCEPT for race, sex, sexual orientation, age, or any disabilities you may have.
If they don't like yoru hair cut, you can be fired. If they don't like the way your breath smells, you can be fired. If the manager gets a wild hair up his ass, you can be fired. - emptybucket, on 11/06/2007, -3/+8...or you could switch to Comcast.
- asdfrewq, on 10/29/2007, -3/+8So um, what exactly should the government be doing? (ever)
As a non-American, there appears to be a growing sentiment of distrust and lack of confidence towards the US government by it's citizens. While casually glancing at topics such as this one, healthcare, education and others, there is always a number of people claiming the government should butt out. I find that curious, that the people elected to run your country are often not trusted by it's citizens with the most basic chores. - derkmerkin, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5you have the option for fios.. and your still using comcast...
- headphonedude, on 10/29/2007, -0/+5Yeah, thats America. You could say its been cat and mouse for quite awhile now, but we're optimistic.
- vertinox, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5Yes, that thing is very megalithic. Its almost as if Comcast is making Philly its own feudal domain. Of course the Earthlink WiFi blows so badly there are no atlernatives and Verizon won't roll FiOS to center city.
