- SHv2, on 03/19/2008, -1/+109*shrugs* Whether or not the FCC has authority to act on P2P blocking is irrelevant. As a Comcast customer, I have the authority to cancel my contract if I feel what they're doing is *****.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+96I love how comcast goes from " we don't block or traffic shape" to " yeah we do it and you can't do anything about it"
- thechr0nic, on 03/19/2008, -0/+81as a Comcast customer, I am actively looking for a new ISP. unfortunately there are not alot of options in my area.
I wish there was more competition in my area, so that comcast wouldn't feel like they can simply run rough shod over me as a customer, and get away with it. - oboy, on 03/19/2008, -10/+84FCC and Comcast fighting it out. It's like putting Bush and Bin Laden in a caged death match. Who do you root for?
- familynight, on 03/19/2008, -1/+54I would like to cancel my Comcast service, but there's no viable alternative. Yay state-sanctioned monopoly!
- DarkerMaster, on 03/19/2008, -5/+53Hell If I were the FCC I would Fine the ***** out of Comcrap and MAKE THEM EAT THOSE WORDS!!
- theaceoffire, on 03/19/2008, -1/+32I vote for a lethal Tie.
- ebarras, on 03/19/2008, -0/+27When has the FCC ever needed "jurisdiction" to make regulations against anything before?
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -1/+27Traffic shaping affects everyone torrenting anything, be it free or pirated.
- AzureRise, on 03/19/2008, -2/+26That's easy. You hope Bin Laden suicide bombs Bush and then they both die.
- bonarez, on 03/19/2008, -2/+26Comcast lacks any respect for FCC's authority, it's not the same thing..
- badqat, on 03/19/2008, -0/+21Somehow, I don't think they'll care. Unless a ton of customers share your stance.
- fleury29, on 03/19/2008, -2/+19Its not about piracy, its about giving me what I pay for. If I am paying for 25mbs then give it to me. Just because you didn't allocate that bandwidth when you advertised doesn't mean *****. Its not about piracy, its about truth in advertising. Bit Torrent can be used for many legal things, by Comcast blocking it they are basically saying, "your a criminal so were gonna block you." I vote for the FCC, let them find a solution to the piracy problem. fkr3 give me a break.
- lengau, on 03/19/2008, -0/+17He said Torrenting.

http://torrent.ubuntu.com/ (or http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/ )
And yes, I have in fact used all of these, and use some of them on a regular basis (Revision3, Ubuntu) - trunkster, on 03/19/2008, -0/+17FiOS is being installed around my area. Soon Comcast... soon...
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+16Wow, seriously?!?
- theaceoffire, on 03/19/2008, -0/+13Well, you will just love "We stopped, no really, stop checking now".
PLEASE GOOGLE, offer us an alternative. National Wifi sounds heavenly at this point. - dizilbdog, on 03/19/2008, -2/+14FCC is a Joke and So is Comcast they both suck let's be honest
- octophobic, on 03/19/2008, -1/+13The system by which they bribe town and state officials to exclude competition is *****. We need more utility/service competition!
- ebarras, on 03/19/2008, -2/+13So, the analogy your making is that since they are so well connected with each other, they are going to start a war that helps both sides and screws innocent people? Brilliant!
- Cronus6, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11Yeah I'm with you. Somehow I don't think canceling my subscription and going back to dial up (the only other choice where I live) is really going to do anything but give Comcast a good laugh.
- MemeWarrior, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11If these ISPs are so worried about the traffic impacting the performance of their networks why aren't they doing more to take down the six or so bot-nets that are apparently responsible for the majority of the spam being sent on the Internet?
- Terr01, on 03/19/2008, -0/+10This is about when I buy X kilobytes-per-second from a company, I get my 256 kilobytes per second and they don't intentionally bottleneck it based on arbitrary business reasons!
When I buy electricity, it's none of the power company's business what I'm using it for, whether it's a toaster or a microwave. - form3hide, on 03/19/2008, -2/+11wow fkr3, you are way off....
- Randinn, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Like that works....
- ravage86, on 03/19/2008, -8/+15I hate to admit it, but Comcast is right. The only real authority the FCC has (or was designed to have) is the authority to license radio frequencies. Content and usage is irrelevant. Perhaps Comcast will unintentionally help us get the FCC out of television content as well. This should be handled in a court, not by the FCC.
- idiosyncrisia, on 03/19/2008, -2/+9Not so much pirating, but a lot of content now is distributed via torrents.
- kylere, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Please give me an alternative to Comcast in Flint, Michigan... Oh wait, there is not one. But the local politicians have benefited immensely.
- jerbaker, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Why does everyone act like a business has a right to something, as if they were a living person? A business has no rights. A business is a concept. How can a "concept" have rights? The owners of the business may have personal rights, but their rights stop where they start interfering with my rights.
- ZeNiTH456, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Who would the $1 charge go to? O_o
- elbowman, on 03/19/2008, -2/+9I hate to point it out, but the FCC has the authority over much more than radio frequency licensing. Communications is not limited to radio frequency. They have sway over media ownership in all forms.
- cawpin, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7Yeah, because EVERYTHING on torrents is pirated material. RIAA, is that you?
- SSCrow, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6Wait.
Who is the bag guy here?
Comcast already throttles P2P on unencrypted streams.
Is Comcast defending their right to do such? - familynight, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7i'm going to go way, way out on a limb and guess that you have dugg a ron paul story or two in your time.
- Scrappy1850, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7not now
- Thuktun, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6Translation for those burying this:
An almost-topical Futurama reference and a Bender emoticon. - hexydes, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7Look at it this way: at least the FCC TRIES to have your best interest in mind. Yeah, they screw it up quite a bit, including things that make them end up looking like the bad guy, but at the end of the day, the FCC isn't really out to get you; it just sucks at its job 99.2% of the time.
Comcast hates you. Their ultimate goal is to provide you with nothing, and take your entire paycheck. They can't make that happen, but they are going to do the best they can to get as close to that scenario as possible. They want to provide you with the most watered-down service that costs them nothing, block you so that you don't use bandwidth and cost them money (and on the side receiving kick-backs from the MPAA/RIAA), and basically do anything they can to provide you the least they can, and charge you the most possible that they are able to.
So while the FCC sucks a lot of the time, it's because they're incompetent. Comcast just hates you. - lordno, on 03/19/2008, -4/+9We need to start a Comcast customer union. $1 to join and we all cancel at once.
- idiosyncrisia, on 03/19/2008, -3/+8Check out Verizon Fios. I keep trying to tell my parents to get it since my school blocks torrenting, and when I try to go home I can't torrent either. Too bad they're waiting for Verizon to offer TV in my area so they can keep it all on one bill. They aren't worried about it, but comcast is really pissing me off.
- thepyro, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5That would pay for the countdown timer on the moon.
- davidrools, on 03/19/2008, -1/+6You don't think it's ***** that they're fighting so hard for the right to be able to limit your bandwidth to whatever application, site, port, etc. that they want? That alone has kept me from being a comcast customer.
- logicalnoise, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5In their words it's consumer minded network management(or some ***** language like that). So In their opinion the FCC is telling them how to manage their network. and IMO teh FCC should because Comcast decided to slowdown everyone's traffic because it was cheaper than just expanding their still aging infrastructure.
- spiritditch, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5FCC or not, somebody with authority better act on P2P blocking and defense of net neutrality.
- ronaldinho, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4Well, this IS going to be settled in court if the FCC does take action. The truth is that both sides are right really, because the law is so damn ambiguous. Comcast is certainly taking advantage of it, but I won't be surprised if the FCC go ahead and just say to Comcast that they have control over Comcast's ***** asses too. I can't wait to see how this will develop.
In the end, what I want to see more is more competition. I have ONLY Comcast in my area and it's making me sick but it's the only option I have. Just this alone is making me want to move to a place where there is RCN.
A more viable case against Comast would be that they simply didn't provide what they are promising (unfettered access and bandwidth, for example). Which means they lied under their teeth. - chanop, on 03/19/2008, -10/+14ROBOT HOUSE!!!!!!!!! o-(_8_| |
- aidave, on 03/19/2008, -3/+7Both Barak and Drugs are good tho. You totally missed the joke.
- AzureRise, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4What are old hicks doing on the internet? Back to your cave!
- sickrubik, on 03/19/2008, -1/+5Worst analogy ever.
- user500, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4FCC should declare them enemy combatants and save the need for the hearing.
- lexbaby, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3I agree. However, Comcast is a "Cable Company." Which IS a common carrier.
One solution for Comcast is probably to separate Comcast the cable provider and Comcast the ISP. Of course, that introduces the prospect of competing ISPs on Comcast's infrastructure (a la DSL). Which I'm sure they don't want. -
