- elvenrunelord, on 06/16/2008, -0/+41not if the internet providers get their way and start charging by the amount transfered rather than continuing with the unlimited usage model.
- dlprager, on 06/16/2008, -0/+27but alas, only about one two thousandth of a yottabyte
- Snap65, on 06/16/2008, -1/+16I'm looking forward to the wider selection of foreign pron.
- borez, on 06/17/2008, -1/+14Cisco, that company blows me away. I spent 8 month in 2001 at a Cisco academy and I don't think I've ever been blasted with so much information in such a short space of time. What an education though and something I think anyone wanting to be a network engineer needs to go through.
- DonSlice, on 06/17/2008, -0/+11All this technology will take nearly 1.21 gigawatts to power.

HA!!!
Not if AT&T, TWC, Comcast, RIAA, and MPAA have anything to say about it!!! - SirTheGuy, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8"Traffic on the world’s networks will increase (annually) 46 percent from 2007 to 2012, nearly doubling every two years"
- facelesscoward, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7I think it means 46% annually.
- magic6435, on 06/17/2008, -0/+7"Cisco Predicts Big Growth for the Internet to Continue"
No *****... i hope no one paid for this "study" - stretch611, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5Unfortunately, for us in the US, I see that happening. However, The rest of the world will probably grow at that speed while our infrastructure gets even worse in comparison.
- hadak, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4I guess Cisco hasn't been paying attention to what Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon are doing.
- SuperDelen, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4And 2 Flux Capacitors
- jayadelson, on 06/16/2008, -0/+4Also an Odlyzko fan myself. He's the only guy I've ever trusted on these numbers, because he understands the systemic flaws in Internet traffic measurement. For those of you interested in how complicated this task can be, I suggest going here:
http://www.caida.org/home/ - Charun, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Prediction: this internet thing is going t be around for a while.
- DarkSenay, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4What the hell is a gigawatt?!?!
- Marty McFly - skuddy, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3but if comcast, and time warner and everyone are charging per block of 40 gigs or so, they are going to be richer than the big oil companies. o.O
- erichw1504, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3nah, it's just a fad. i'm already over it... oh, wait i'm using it right now. nevermind.
- Nintendesert, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3You do know that Piracy isn't what's taking up all the bandwith right? Streaming media is the biggest hog.
- sandiegodude, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3This just in... Captain Obvious says something obvious!
- Insanitation, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2We are currently useing IPv4 and in some odd cases IPv6. I think you need to catch up some.
- sorgasm, on 06/17/2008, -3/+5If something doubles every 2 years, after 5 years shouldn't it increase by something more like 400% and not 46%?
- Xeworlebi, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Funny that in the US you guys are moving towards bandwidth caps, while here in Belgium we are just starting to get away from it.
- tama00, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Its gonna be a huge boom over the next 3 years as the 3rd world countries get wired up! :)
- paintpro, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2zetta =1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
- bman1984, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2I hope this is a sarcastic comment...
- Domdogg123, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Elitism at its best!
- Insanitation, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Who do you think makes the hardware for those companies? Withoug Cisco, Juniper and a few others...Comcast, AT&T, and TWC are nothing.
- Insanitation, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I don't think you understand what the Internet is. It is 1 big mesh topology. The only thing your ISP does is runs a cable to your house to give you access to that mesh. If everyone is using wireless then there is no longer a need for an ISP to connect to that mesh. (unless the wireless technology uses some sort of satellite).
Think of it this way....Do you need a ISP to have a LAN party? No...you only need the network interface and sometimes a router or hub depending on how you want to set it up. - TheGuruStud, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1jiggawatt is the correct pronunciation for gigawatt (I'm serious)
- Insanitation, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Who do you think supplies their hardware? Cisco knows more about Comcasts network then they do.
- Nintendesert, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1As funny as the Comcast, AT&T jokes are, I don't think they'll much effect Cisco, they'll continue to see the large growth, however content providers that deal in the streaming media are going to be very adversely affected. We're just now seeing the dawn of media being streamed to homes through Netflix etc. and these caps are going to absolutely destroy those emerging markets.
I wouldn't be surprised to see attempts at litigation in places where one company completely dominates the market to try and prevent these caps once people can't download all that content anymore. - gtank92, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1to bad no one has heard of a zettayte
- 4lton, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2When he's talking about exabytes I'm going to assume he meant exaBITs. Bitrate is the preferred unit of network bandwidth. Thanks.
- uallsuck, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Oh, that makes more sense. Why is it I have to apply a retard prism to every story summary on digg before it makes sense?
- RealmDown, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Where we're going, we don't need tubes.....
- Insanitation, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1When the entire internet goes wireless there will be no way to govern it.
- broknman, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Duh.
- Scaryclouds, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Ok I'm questioning these numbers:
Expected annual bandwidth 2012: 522 exabytes
Googles expected annual bandwidth 2012: (44 X 12) 528 exabyte
So in other words 101% of the worlds traffic will be going to Google. I'm guessing that is a typo. - vwnlinux, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1And in other news, recent EMC study indicates that the disk storage market is set for big growth.
- amed, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1mainstream porno full in effect?
- mmalecki, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1FTA:
"Traffic on the world’s networks will increase (annually) 46 percent from 2007 to 2012, nearly doubling every two years."
Too bad the author doesn't understand compound growth; 46% annual growth means it will MORE than double every two years. - smakusdod, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2The Internet will only get bigger and more popular?????
WOW, WHAT VISIONARIES! - trollick, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Incorrect. According to ISPs we are about to run out of bandwidth because nobody makes it anymore.
- BUTTER5, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1That makes sense. But if it is increasing at 46% annually, than it is more than doubling every two years.
- scaryant, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1You don't say... the internet is going to get *more* popular and there'll be *more* data... I bet no-one predicted that back in 1990.
Cisco... predicting the predicable. - daftman, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1It seems to me, you love to read your own writing. Yet what you write is plain *****.
So does that mean technically, you love your own *****? - Genghis1, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1If NN passes in the US, the growth will stop and the US will fall behind the rest of the world. No company will invest in a government regulated internet.
- Insanitation, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1They iPhone is gay and i hope everything apple is dead by then (including the fanboys)
