...and eat more donuts efficently (now you can be on 'patrol' AND eat donuts!) - gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13do they have cherry lights and sirens?
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Heh, then they can sue for becoming obese.
I can see it now:
*Thief jumps over wall*
*Police officer leaves segway*
*another thief steals segway* - kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Imagine that show CHiPs with these instead of motorcycles!
- xoonbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13i live in Chicago... i've seen cago cops rollin around in segways for a while now. They are sweet, they have huge tires... like off road/hummer/BA segways. They are bigger than the model shown in the article.
dugg - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12FTA: "giving the scooter the an energy efficiency equivalent of 450 miles per hour -- with no emissions."
Do we need further proof that the author is an idiot? I have 40 miles per hour of proof right there. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11why not just put them on one of those scooters elderly people use?
- bigpeeler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Ohh nooo, that cop has a segway --- walk a little faster.
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Under my plan, police officers will be riding unicycles and those who cannot ride a unicycle will be terminated. We will ultimately have the most elite police force in the world.
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I love my rascal.
- swein515, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I was in Chicago this weekend. Crossing Michigan into Millennium Park, a car screeched to a halt at a stop light, and a woman in the crosswalk bounced off the hood of the car. The woman seemed alright, amazingly.
Within seconds, a park Security dude whizzed up on a Segway, I thought it was the funniest thing I ever saw. He pulled out a radio, and within another minute TWO more Segways showed up, this time both were First Aid versions, complete with big panier packs of first aid gear. In another minute a police car and ambulance showed up.
The response was amazing. On foot, it would have taken much longer. Segways looks silly, but if it works, it works. - ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Whenever I see or think of the Segway, I only think of GOB on "Arrested Development".
Nuff said. - bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just think of how quickly they'll be able to stop high-speed chases riding on Segways that go 450 mph!
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I actually live in Chicago and have seen them spinning around in millenium park. It is quite a funny sight, seeing a 50-year old man spinning around on that thing.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Indeed. We should also ban squad cars; when the car runs out of fuel, the bad guy gets away.
I think a bigger worry is the lack of protection around the officer. There's no fuselage like a car has; you're exposed on all sides. It's much easier to get shot or stabbed in the back/arm/leg/head when you're on a Segway than when you're in a car. - piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Nice to know where our taxpayer dollars are going. Let's see, $200 bike or few thousand bucks for a segway so that the lazy cop doesn't even need to use his legs?
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ah the scene for a criminal round up.... as Cops trade their guns in for lassos.... to lasso the street scum... and herd them into jail.
"YA! YA! Move along you crack dealer! ...."
Then months later news headline "Crack dealers branded with the letter 'C' by Chicago Cops" - krolls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wow it seems a lot of people here dont understand how the segways are used by police depts. The vast majority of the time the segway is used as a tool for community policing... a replacement for Bike/Horse Cops. In fact, it makes it easier for a police offer to be less fatigued if they have to jump off a segway to run down a bad guy. These devices are not used to chase people, they are not a police car. They are used to patrol an urban area, keeping the officer capable and ready to respond.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Spiffy, but did the guy mean 450 miles per day? ..or something else?
Also.. "with no emissions." - That's not taking the production of electricity into consideration. - happbando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3walking or tooling around on a mountain bike might not take up too much energy, but try running down a bad guy after sitting on a mountain bike for twelve hours. i don't understand how such a stigma has built up around segways. does no one else see how amazing these things are? obviously they're not a replacement for exercise, that's not their intention. during this whole gas price hike, i don't understand how people can bitch about an emissionless, fun to drive vehicle. how many of you drive cars? if gas prices go up too high, are you really going to start biking to work because it's cheaper and you'll be getting exercise? i think not.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Why don't the fat & lazy SOBs walk? I hate it when my tax dollars get wasted on something that makes government employees even more lazy, fat, and worthless..
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's what the custom helmet is for.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Chicago cops are some of the best cops in America :-D they are actually human beings. Still don't believe me? try talking to a copy in LA or Cincinnati and see how they treat you.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't wait for the for Fox special, "When Segways ATTACK"
The "Cops: Segway Edition" would also be quite entertaining. - zhen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Or, god forbid, they could actually be in shape ... honestly, it's not like they are chasing down criminals every day. Put them on a damn bike and make them work out. They don't have to be professional mountain bikers, but they'll sure be in better shape from riding than from standing on a Segway all day.
Geez. Freakin' lazy. - awmitchell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe makes more sense for Paramedics ?
http://www.firehouse.com/ems/news/02/5/23_Pga.html - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yup...and the first thief was just a shill for the second one, as they are in the segway reselling business!
Wasn't that word actually spelled 'segue' ? Maybe the manufacturer couldn''t spell. - suavivity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How about you RTFA before posting your uninformed opinions.
"The scooters, which travel as fast as 12.5 mph, also allow an officer on patrol to cover a much greater distance than on foot, and go indoors, onto elevators and other places bigger vehicles can't. Blair said the added efficiency allows a force to cut down on the number of patrol officers on each shift and recoup the Segway's cost in as quickly as a month." - pilotmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've seen that very cop near Michigan Avenue. Tourists are facinated by the Segway so they ask him for directions. He teeters back and forth while he chats. They're gonna be great for PR. Besides, since the cop stands a foot or so higher than the crowds the cop can see further to spot miscreants.
I saw two Chicago Fire Department EMTs leaving the nearby fire station on similar Segways, but red in color. I think they patrol heavy visited places. It looked like they were headed for Navy Pier. I'll bet those really help them get through the crowds and street traffic when someone needs help. - doherty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unless I'm mistaken, they've been using them in O'Hare airport for a couple of years now...
- TwwIX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where are the fanny packs?
You ain't a real cop until you start wearing a police branded fanny pack. - Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3boredzo, you have to realize these are giant gimmicks, really. They place these cops around the new Millenium park where all the tourists are. It somehow is thought to attract more tourists for some reason. I live in Chicago, and thats the only place I've ever seen them.
- alphaterminus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a Bladez electric stand up scooter that is 450 w for $400. I take my daughter 2 miles to and from school (kindergarten) on it with a bike trailer attached. The scooter is 50 lbs, I'm 200, the trailer is 20, and my daughter is 50 lbs... so I'm loading 320 lbs on that think 4 miles each am and afternoon at 12 mpg, and it's a couple grand cheaper than a segway. (I do miss out on the astounding 450 mph that those cop Segways go, though! I assume they were converting grid electricity price to a 450 mpg fuel price)
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in San Diego. On the busy summer weekends, the cops drive ATVs on the beach. There is one particularly fat cop that bounces around out there. It always makes me laugh.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chicago cops around the Millenium Park area have had Segways for a really long time, I don't know about elsewhere because I haven't seen it, but It's pretty funny to see them zooming around. I'll take a picture next time I see it.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is basically like cops on horses which you see in some cities, and overtime is probably a lot cheaper too.
It gives the police more visibility which has a deterrent effect and makes them seem friendlier then when they are in a car which I can imagine is good for tourism and retail business. - gdrewpowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You think they can mount a tazer on one of those things?
- alphaterminus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dual post sorry
- antivirus88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chicago Cops have been using Segways for about two years now. This is extremely old news.
They're all over the place on Navy Pier. - pt4117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I saw this headline and thought that this was funny. They've had them for at least a year. As a matter of fact, I saw a Fire Department one just a few weeks ago. CPD and CFD both use those Segways with the fat tires. .
- Sterch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I go to Western Kentucky University, our campus police use segways, I believe they have 3 of them. (My tuition money going to SUCH good use). The segways have plus and minuses. Like some people said, they cant jump like a horse, and they dont suspend you that high in the air, so you can be easily pushed off. Scariest thing about them is they are virtually silent when in motion. They can creep up behind you and you not even know it, which is scary because they looove to bust the under aged kid whos had a few beers.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Airport cops at Reagan National have had segways for some time and dogs too...
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HAHAHA These guys'll look like Daleks! "We are superior beings, even though we can't use the stairs!"
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2vypergts, that's awesome that the dogs at Reagan National have segways too. My dog is pretty lazy, I should get her one also.
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4There are going to be a lot of stolen Segways.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@vypergts
yeah, the cops in Ft Worth have had them for a few years. Its pretty nifty cause they can patrol downtown and get to accidents/fights/ect quicker then if they ran and they are not physically strained as much when they arrive on the scene, compared to if they had run.
I'm surprised more cities haven't looked into them. - rutterj2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i understand what you're saying, krolls, but if tooling around on a mountain bike is too tiring for a cop, then maybe a bit of exercise would be a good thing, instead of taking the easy route and getting an (expensive) segway
- charlietuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Saw a cop riding one in DC, at Union Station. Looked odd to me.
- GRoper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can hardly wait for the movie - Chicago cops on Segways chasing a thief on a Vespa, shooting and ducking all the while.
BTW wouldn't it be easier to shoot someone riding a Segway than someone riding a bike or scooter? You must stand upright and very steady (no dodging bullets!). I've seen guys do handstands on motorcycles but don't expect the same on a Segway.
Hell, for the money, just get 'em in-line skates, knee pads and a helmet. - Layne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed, bikes are faster, better looking, cheaper, and can go up small sets of stairs and bumps. Seriously what are they thinking. And sure segways can go into elevators...if they want to take up the whole thing. Not to mention humans run faster than segways.
