- afex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+64i'd just like to say thanks for a direct link to the pic - no blog, no dumb explanation, just the pic named in the description. agentparanoia, you rock.
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52Wicked.
If you're the type who need to see carpets, private offices with frosted windows and some reception desk made of solid oak before you see the "quality" of a business... well you're probably just some stuck-up little a-hole.
This is part of the beauty of business in the digital age. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+54I know.
I don't even see one tube. Those liars. - control98408, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53Looks as crappy as I've imagined.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Where's the employee entertainment lounge? The Segway charging stations? The sushi bar?
Farewell reckless dot com extravagance. We hardly even knew ye. - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38You know, the joke's kind of ruined because we can see what that image really is in the URL.
- Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Umberger:
Don't those pipes in the ceiling count? - javiel, on 07/08/2008, -4/+35Is that a Sweatshop or you tube?
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Prove it.
That could be a picture of a LAN party in Mongolia. - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I don't think that your friend will be invited back!
Perhaps there will be a youtube video of one of the security guys kicking his ass! - aknowles5139, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29Could it kill you to put a "http://" before your link?

- gargantuan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16nah, they're just getting ready for Britains inevitable comeback tour when we reclaim all that is rightfully ours. Although we may let you keep Texas. And maybe Alaska. God save the queen an'all that!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It's hard to imagine that they could afford a large office right now. They burn a million dollars in bandwidth and have very little income comin' in from ads. They will reign supreme though in the video world for sometime if they can keep their audience entertained and coming back for more. They will definitely be acquired for a serious sum.
- Useless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14dclowd....
have you seen the rates for advertisement space on myspace? From what i understand, its pretty ridiculous. Now, im not sure of the cost of bandwith and maintenance for the site though. Then again, its not like myspace is the quickest browsing site around..... - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13There are lots of VIDEOS of the office on the youtube dev blog.

There is even one right at the top where they clean out a dead rat... - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11They'd have to save money somewhere, if they're spending more than a million a month on bandwidth.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The servers aren't actually there. They're in a datacenter.
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Oh how I long for an office with windows.
*sigh* - 3leggedHorse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10There's a union jack on the wall, are they British.
- hagrin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I, for one, appreicate the "from the bottom upwards" effort that the YouTube employees are all making to make it a decent service. I know that I would generally be unhappy working in an enviroment on that so those workers are making a sacrifice to be apart of something that could revolutionize the Internet (for the next 15 minutes at least).
Compare YouTube's offices to Digg's new offices and you can see the obvious differences and I would assume the differences in employee satisfaction with working conditions. However, it also goes to show you that you don't need a high tech, trendy, IRL 2.0 office to make a worthwhile product that can swing Internet momentum. Reminds me of the Wozniak days in the garage actually ... - jrooks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10When you are paying 1 million a month for bandwidth, who can afford walls...
- braingilbreath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10at least they have windows...
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I noticed that too but no: they're based in San Mateo, CA.
- shertzerj, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21I found a picture of their 1st floor bathroom, as well.
www.bigrockcabin.com/BigRockPhotoGallery_files/images/13Campsite%20Outhouse.gif - Butros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good thing to see they have their priorities straight, business first, stupid flashy office crap second. Listen guys, all that designer furniture and herman miller cubicles that you think make a great office come from the same chinese slave workers that build those particle board tables and 10 year old chairs they're using here. The greatest tech companies in the world didn't come from cushy VC startup money, they came from working in the garage and eating ramen noodles every day. That takes real vision. (Note: not saying YouTube is the next Apple, they definitely follow the .com business model of 1.Find new spin on idea, 2.???, 3. Profit)
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uh... Youtube doesn't have money to burn. They're burning money, but they can't afford to be doing so.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes, the office is sparse, but what I find more interesting is the relatively small staff. I wonder if there are more offices or if that's it.
- efriese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think it's awesome. Runny a business on a shoe string is tough and this shows they know how to manage money.
- synth7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They DON'T have money to burn :)
- navegen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11its amazing how such a huge website is ran from that small space.
- aonaran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Looks kinda fly by night to me.
Kind of reminds me of a political campaign office. - j0ew00ds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Freaktrap
12k per month is 144,000 per year. spread that over 4 employees and you're looking at $44,000 each for salary. That isn't much and doesn't keep in mind rent, office upkeep, OR bandwidth... - jeremymcanally, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Er...
http://www.youtube.com/blog?entry=LeAltgu_pbM
That picture != this video. I'm sure that's just part of their office. - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Probably similar looking. After all, Kevin can't even afford a couch.
- jtjenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yuck. It looks like some kind of scary underground organization. O_o
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, this is a huge contrast to the gazillions of $ of mp3.com office equipment that gathered dust after the dotcom bust.
- tpmidd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6There's no proof from the picture that we're actually looking at the YouTube offices...
- xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@FreakTap
Are you kidding? $36k per quarter is nothing. That's before costs, liabilities and the insane taxes in Sweden. - bendak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a $500 billion company for you.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Except that this is a great indication of the quality of YouTube's business. They make basically no profits, and thus can't afford any of those things."
Hey, Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com has a desk he made out of a door. It's a symbol left over from *their* profitless warehouse days -- now, they're one of the few profitable .coms to survive the bust.
A handful of .coms that start out like this really do pay off big time. And that's what Venture Capital is all about. You lose most of the time, but when you win, you win BIG. - narduk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Do you read the news. Google just signed a 900 million dollar advertising deal with MySpace. I think that makes them profitable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Totally. Dugg anyway, but especially for that. Cheers agentparanoia.
- behemothaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Welcome to how businesses start slaves. Create something that generates revenue based an idea of your own and then have the strength and tenacity to see it through. Then make comments.
Entrepreneurs were given a bad wrap after dotcom. But that was more the fault of the investment banks and VCs. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"have you seen the rates for advertisement space on myspace? Just because you charge out the you-know-what for advertising doesn't mean people will even notice it, let alone, click it. One of the biggest issues advertisers now are facing is over-exposure. People are, on average, exposed to something around 3000 ads a day. We're becoming desensitized to it. It's no longer good enough to just have an ad able to "be seen." I glaze right over ads in magazines, Tivo past them during my shows, and never click them on websites, and I'd be willing to bet I'm part of a majority.
My point is, they think they're getting a deal, but the statistics don't lie: People don't look at advertising, and they sure as hell don't click it.
Research: http://medialit.med.sc.edu/adsinaday.htm - DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thats the point, Youtube has -no- money to burn. This picture just furthers the point.
Edit: jeremybanks beat me to it. :-D - XxXoldsaltXxX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Looks more like a lan party than an office.
- zai-asal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Use tinyurl next time when posting a link, so the url won't give away the joke.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5/me points to google
- mreeve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Even if they did have money to burn, why does a company need to burn the money on some overpriced office where they're just paying higher rent to do the same thing?
Why not spend that money in investments or R&D? I think it's great they are keeping it real, whether they are forced to or not. -
