- ConEEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's pretty obvious really, but still a good read. It's ironic that I'm sitting here typing this on my Titanium Powerbook, the first popular widescreen laptop ever made. And it still beats the pants off current PCs in terms of style.
- Lingur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would never ever in my life buy a widescreen laptop. I hate them. I like the screen to be small and petite. I want my laptop to be as portable as possible.
I vow to never buy a widescreen. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tallscreen would be much better. Since when did you look at a web page and go 'damn, if only my screen were a little wider'.
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree, pretty obvious. Rumors say even Apple will make the entire iBook line widescreen when they switch to Intel.
- sirmikester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Since link is down, here is an article with the same fact:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2006512,00.as ... - yodamitsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously the people that hate widescreen don't use Graphics, Page layout or Video Apps. Widescreen is the only way to go for a screen full of tool palettes...
- anorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gotta agree with you about the video apps, but this is also great for multi-taskers and the like.
Whoever above said you don't need the width for web pages is right, thats why Firefox/Dreamweaver is kept to its own part of the screen while I code and it leaves plenty of room to have a couple IM windows open, watch a video, or do whatever else. I love my 17" Inspiron running at 1440x900 - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0arent most notebook and lcd widescreens 16:10, i think there are very few 16:9 monitors/notebook displays
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ich hasse widescreen ( i hate widescreen
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0first "duh" digg of the day.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm typing this on my Toshiba M45-S265.
- Lostcosmos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No. No. No. By 2009 we need direct cranial implants, not just for display but a whole PC.
- tank_47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate widescreens. The one I examined was a Toshiba M30 with the "glass" in front of the screen, giving it a glossy look. I hated it.
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Tallscreen would be much better. Since when did you look at a web page and go 'damn, if only my screen were a little wider'"
well you can tilt the dell widescreen monitors on their side and then rotate the screen output with your video card's control panel. It's not as nifty as you might think, though. It's difficult to "see" the whole screen at once, after all, widescreen is nice because it's closer to the aspect ratio of our own vision. - veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i see why it's popular, most people who don't know much about electronics assume that the screen size is horizontal rather diagonal, so widescreen must make even bigger, lol.
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Odd, my notebook is already widescreen and I love the "space" for everything on it. Wallpapers aren't a problem, I just stick with Window's default, and games? 1024x768 to 1440x900 look great on this.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0widescreen doesn't necessarily offer more room - case in point, the Dell 2005 20" vs. the Dell 2001 20": 1680x1050 vs 1600x1200. The perceived space is larger, though, and it is more sensible for certain things - anything where you need multiple windows side by side (like coding and being able to see your results right next to it). For graphic artists, though, having more overall screen real estate is more important.
- myskja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Obviously the people that hate widescreen don't use Graphics, Page layout or Video Apps. Widescreen is the only way to go for a screen full of tool palettes..."
Uhm, I'm a photographer/graphic artist... I still hate widescreens. I do use two monitors though... - myskja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really can't stand wide screen laptops, and I probably never will. Wide screen for TVs, 4:3 for computers, that's my rule.
- terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the hell is a desktop replacement? Exactly why would one pay so much more money to get a product with only slightly more space-saving than a small form-factor PC and LCD monitor?
As for real notebooks--the kind one can carry in a bag and use anywhere--I hope at least some of the companies keep a regular screen shape. My iBook has the traditional aspect ratio, and allows the computer to be smaller in width and thus more portable than, say, the 15.4" PowerBook. - Coolcan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Arrrrrgggg
The only thing that is wrong with my laptop is that it has a widescreen.
Good luck finding any games to run in 16:10, and Wallpapers are painful to find.
Thankfully I dual screen it with my triniton 21" crt. - cipnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love my tiny 12" non-widescreen ibook.
widescreens are great; if you don't have to carry them around and charge a battery to power them. - Fowz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a widescreen laptop and it's fantastic....those who say they don't like it....have never used it...how is a little more space going to hurt you?
BTW...by 2009 i want to be going to space for cheap!!! - jermm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Typeing this on a 19:10 tibook, and love it!
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why isn't everything made today widescreen... enough of this 4:3 aspect ratio crap.
And Wal-Mart stop selling freaking full screen DVD'S!!!!!!!!! So people will get hip to widescreen quicker. - Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would have hoped for a larger percentage. Personally I think 4:3 screen laptops are pretty ugly. I like how widescreen laptops are shaped more like a book.
As for screen real estate, I like having all my important programs on the quick launch bar, so the wider the better. As for games, I don't play games on my laptop, but I'm sure a lot of game developers will be making their games in widescreen or at least compatible with it. - Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, what a bold step to predict something 4 years in the future that will more likely happen in 2.
btw, i love my widescreen laptop, although mine is a desktop replacement, not built for easy portability - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg, home of the dumb. IE: Shortstick. What in the hell are you talking about? Thats one of the stupidest comments I've EVER seen on Digg. And beleive me, there are a lot of them.
- jpturner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good god! I can't belive it! Will keyboards get bigger too?
- bmccaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The biggest advantage to widescreens is the real estate. Small machines are great for their portability, but you'll only be able to view one window at a time. Let me have that strip of widescreen real estate!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I absolutely detest widescreen; I'm on a 1.1 inch, 5.5 Ib centrino notebook w/ a 14 inch lcd - portability, not widescreen. It's also much more aesthetically pleasing.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The widescreen (15.4) on my HP zv5000 is gorgeous. I couldn't imagine using anything else.
- SuperHiTMaN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find it funny cause I just took a trip today at the local "Best Buy" over here in Hong Kong. Most of the laptops are being sold are widescreen over here. The 80% is already here...dude.
- expotice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Arrrrrgggg

widescreen wallpapers are hard to find?? you must be stuck in two years ago. there are now hundreds of sites. my favorite of now is interfacelift with hundreds in widescreen
http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/
most are quite good (see their "most popular" wallpapers page to see the cream rise above the crap).
any other good suggestions out there? - shortstick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't let the people at the RIAA find out about this, or 80% of laptops will be classified as terrorist devices.
- dhasenan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dunno, having a laptop I can put in my backpack is more important than having one I can comfortably watch movies with. If I want to watch movies, they're probably low enough quality that the larger display size would produce distracting compression artifacts. And if I actually want to watch a movie on my computer, well, what are 21" CRTs for?
- tube013, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do in-court presentations, most projectors all take 4:3 resolutions, so when I'm forced to use a widescreen, I either have to suffer with an out of proportion display on my laptop, or if the drivers support it, black bar the sides to get the screen in proportion.
Even now it's hard to find a decent notebook with a 4:3 screen. - TheRealPod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BOORRRRRIIIINNNGGGGG
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Obviously the people that hate widescreen don't use Graphics, Page layout or Video Apps. Widescreen is the only way to go for a screen full of tool palettes..."
You'd be wrong. I do photo and audio editing and I HATE widescreen laptops. The vertical resolution of often compromised to attain the 16:10 ratio. That's not more room, that's just a shape change. - jessejanderson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't need to read this article to know why peole are buying widescreen laptops.
In a word - DVDs. - hipsterelitist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0multiple displays > widescreen.
the day i choose a widescreen (provided i have a choice) is the day i move to bizarro world (or canada). - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I doubt 80% will be widescreen by then. Widescreen laptops are pretty impracticle for people who are always mobile and having to lug around their laptops. Widescreens are not only larger dimensions (thus storage/transporting them sucks more), but they're also heavier.
- pdlevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0everything is gonna be widescreen, or at least something close, way before 2009... today all the new good laptops (read: apple, most others) are widescreen... the age of 4:3 is over from tv to computers, everywhere
- vladimirmilici, on 12/07/2007, -0/+0I used to be reticent about wide displays untill i bought a HP found on http://www.niftynotebooks.com/hp-compaq
The display resolution (1280) feels the same as my 19" tft - ColdChilli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't stand widescreen laptops. I'd rather have higher resolution for coding.
Also, When I'm watching letterbox movies why does it not fill the screen?!?! - anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"I would never ever in my life buy a widescreen laptop. I hate them. I like the screen to be small and petite. I want my laptop to be as portable as possible.

I assume you haven't used a 12" PowerBook. - pdlevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tall screen becomes useless on a 17+ incher because thats plenty of resolution to read 2 pages side by side
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0du du da dumb story
