- uptown, on 10/10/2007, -31/+2"Davidson, [Newsvine's] chief executive and co-founder, is perhaps best known among the general public for an incident in March, when he acknowledged hacking the presidential campaign Web site of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz."
While the acquisition is a great move for MSNBC in terms of adopting forward-thinking technology, you have to wonder about the judgement of a company's CEO if he does something like that.- fcukbush, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14He should be given a medal.
- preisler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36Wow, that's very false: http://www.kottke.org/remainder/07/03/13096.html . McCain hotlinked to Davidson's server so he changed the pictures on his end. That is not hacking - that's sweet sweet payback.
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37omg! But the corporations! CORPORATIONS!!! Don't you understand? CORPORATIONS!!!
- thegreathal, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8Microsoft/NBC? They're going to filter out my Kucinich/Gravel posts now :(
- thegreathal, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2*obligatory last.fm post about how corporations are frequently sucking the good out of Web 2.0 startups*
- bingobongony, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Yeah, because that damn NBC is so right wing.
- mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The Tech part is easy. I just hope they screw up the delicious Crunch!
- shiftt, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3Shame on Calvin Tang, Mike Davidson, Lance Anderson and Mark Budos for selling out.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9When offered millions upon millions of dollars it's hard not to sell out.
- shiftt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You're absolutely right, that's why nearly all the news organizations in the United States are owned by a handful of conglomerates.
- bingobongony, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6How DARE they make money from their hard work!
Here is something to notice in the future...The people that blast others for "selling out" are always the ones that will never create anything worthwhile in their lives, and hence will never have the opportunity toe sell out.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9When offered millions upon millions of dollars it's hard not to sell out.
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Breaking: More lame use of "Breaking" in descriptions.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/10/2007, -8/+7i broke my ***** on a fire hydrant covered in hammers.
- texpundit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Okay...that's just so ***** random, I HAD to digg it up.

- ventro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Davidson must be riding high. Good for him. He's a cool dude.
- colonels1020, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16Honestly, I hadn't even heard of NewsVine until now.
- bbqribs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0You're not missing much. It's just the same old news articles, except with a comment section with a bunch of self-righteous intellectual wannabes. Hey, sounds like reddit...
- badboys213, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1does anyone else know of "un-corporation" news sites that have like "real news", like I know there was a site or two that ran that Peter Jennings died like a couple days before it hit mainstream.
- irinotecan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The only "un-corporation" news site that I am aware of (that isn't likely to sell out) is WikiNews.org. I don't know if they are popular enough yet to get any scoops, and they don't have a "comment on article" feature like NewsVine, but anyone can write an article for it, just like Wikipedia. Since it is owned by WikiMedia (the same people who run Wikipedia), it would seem to me that would make it very unlikely it would ever get sold to the likes of Murdoch or CNN
- Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1'and they don't have a "comment on article" feature like NewsVine'
Wikinews has discussion pages, which are kind of the same thing...

- chubbybunny, on 10/10/2007, -8/+6Breaking?
Try buried. - jizzlies, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0Here are some more "breaking" mergers:
Digg/ESPN
Disney/ http://www.bofads.com
CNN/Myspace
Martha Stewart/Hustler- meggani, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1CNN/Myspace? News Corp already owns myspace.
- texpundit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Digg/ESPN"
Not enough sports stories on here for that to happen.
"CNN/Myspace"
Already owned by Fox.
Oh, and epic FAIL for pimping your own site.
Burried. - jizzlies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Um, I was kidding. DUH! And I'm not Martha STewart of Rupert Murdoch
- MLisa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I used to have Newsvine on my homepage, however, I discovered that whomever posted the first comment ruled the discussion. People there often posted stupid comments or opinions, as if they had not even read the article. The 'In Crowd" rules at Newsvine. Heaven forbid that anyone should have a differing thought. Digg allows for more discussions, replies, differing opinions and some thoughtful insights. Far more variety of opinions on Digg. I'm so glad I switched.
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah people always read the article before making a post on digg.
- MLisa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Of course not always...I didn't mean to imply that. I just feel that the Digg users are more open to diversity of opinion. I more often sees posts here where a reader has gone to the trouble to actually look up a subject and do some research before they post. I have learned a lot on this site, thanks to all of you.
- cyberdork, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I stopped using Newsvine, because it wasn't about news but simply about the US right against the US left and vice versa.
Just look at their top stories, it's always about Bush, abortion, iraq, christanity, anti-muslim, gay-marriage, global warming etc etc. Everyday, all year long. Even if you look in the science category the only stories with comments are about evolution/intelligent design.
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah people always read the article before making a post on digg.
- EnderMB, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Newsvine is basically like Digg, but better.
I'm not sure about the acquisition and what it holds for the websites future, but I guess we'll all have to wait and see. - Roads01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8 Let me explain to you how this works: you see, the corporations finance MSNBC, and then MSNBC goes out... and the corporations sit there in their... in their corporation buildings, and... and, and see, they're all corporation-y... and they make money.
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Orwellian.
- Wisgary, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Matt Damon.
- OffPiste, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1MSNBC has a news site? Does anyone watch it?
- bwizard, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Just deleted my newsvine account....
- Aereo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Great. An independent, user-driven news source that was worth reading bought out by a commercial news company. It's all down hill from here.
- SwordofKahless, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Can you blame them. Paidcontent is reporting it sold between 5 to 7 million. Perhaps minus the 1.5m they got from the VC.
- itsbob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Good for the Newsvine people, too bad for the rest of us...
- vat0r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1While MSNBC is definitely a democratic leaning news source you have to admit that they are nowhere near as bad as most the others. At least they offer alternate view points SOME of the time which is more then you can say for...well you know.
- lagrange, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yawn. Wake me when MSNBC makes a leverage buyout offer on my ass pipe.
- jon26l, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Newsvine is run by some cool dudes... just hope they don't waste all the cash on chicks & coke
- ssk84, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Newsvine is great site -- hopefully they won't go down now due to their new ownership.
- tjkombo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1So much for the vine, it will be all about what MSNBC pumps down the vine now. We need more open news sources. So sad.
- jkharris07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sad to see a good Web 2.0 startup being bought out.
