Yeah man, I always hate it when i go to CNN and I find the same news that I just read on MSNBC. - Praetorian42, on 10/12/2007, -18/+55"but I always find that I've already seen most of it on digg."
-Well I find that I've already seen most of it on Reddit. - JonDiggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25well it took about 12 minutes for someone to see the post on reddit and post it on digg...
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -13/+36What I hate about all these social bookmarking sites is the cross-posting that goes on. Whether it is intentional or not, it isn't really worth using multiple sites when they all have the same content. I have been to reddit and del.icio.us several times, but I always find that I've already seen most of it on digg.
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22@bluephoenix
that means they're cheaper :) - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Why Reddit and not Digg? Well, Reddit almost certainly costs less (smaller userbase, less traffic, smaller development team) but is growing in popularity. That's what they've bought - the increasing popularity and visitor share of the website. It's cheaper to buy a rapidly growing website than one that's already hit critical mass.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I never thought they'd be acquired before digg was. They operate on a much smaller scale apparently too.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Depends on which you read, and I'm not saying that digg is faster, just that I tend to read digg more, so when I go to reddit, I've already seen about 70-80% of the articles.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@diagonal: Why do you need sources and statistics for common sense?
I don't need sources to let me know business basics. If a service you acquire has no business model, and you pay more money to acquire it than it can possibly make in return for you, then you are going to lose money. Think of it like a 2nd grade math word problem, if that helps. - drpeppper, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Thats what makes it better. Less downtime, faster interface.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6typically i find that digg is down so much that i'm not sure i care to come back anymore. i enjoy the site when it works, but it seems that it has an average 95% uptime and for IT that is horrible.
i use del.icio.us for other things and i don't really consider digg and that an apples to apples comparison. delicious is similar to an actual bookmark system, digg is more of a social commentary on news topics where i enjoy it for the community rather than the actual articles that land here. - SPThom, on 10/12/2007, -11/+161) Is there downtime here? I've seen it down once for what looked to be a scheduled maintenance.
2) Minimalist + Fugly = Faster + Better? - bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Official response:
http://reddit.com/blog/trickortreat - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14Lately, I've been seeing downtime on Digg every day. Right now, I can't get to my user profile, which is quite annoying.
- Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The price is not being disclosed.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Digg not saved, try again later"
Anyone else sick of that message? - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ davidkeithjones
Digg:
1. Their business model is advertising. The same business model every publication and media company uses.
2. The ads have made them a profit.
3. News is a fad? News has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. How is it a fad? - tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Why can't we just have one website for everything?"
Yeah - and why can't we all just think the same. Why can't we all just have one religion and one God. Why can't we all just have one government and have one leader. Why not one operating system and one type of motherboard with one type of hard drive. No choices - no problems!!!!
This kind of thinking is dangerous. Competition spurs growth. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Does anyone know how much money they got? It could shed some light on the (assumed) eventual purchase price of Digg :)
- drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5Great purchase, love reddit.
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Reddit, though it doesn't look at pretty in comparison, isn't as spam-prone as Digg is.
Reddit has been more into bulletproofing their current system while Digg has been more into expansion and features. Maybe if Digg would focus more on security instead of getting bombarded with User/Submitter spam while working on features, they'd have a better chance at being acquired... - Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4me too. Digg has been unavailable more times than I can count recently.
- cyclo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone once posted an article on reddit which linked to digg and vice versa before (endless loop)... his digg account got canceled.
- horntz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is a case of Conde Nast buying the technology and staff as much as the site itself (probably more so). I think they will go with model where they seamlessly integrate Reddit into their existing sites as opposed to trying to turn Reddit itself into some sort of huge destination destination site like Digg is.
- willin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3reddit has stated that they are profitable. Growth and profit usuallly make a company attractive.
- brandonr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg and Reddit battles aside, good for them. I don't know much about the people behind reddit, but I think this was their first startup, and they put a lot of work into it.
- woodenturkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its all about taste, I prefer Reddit, that's just me. Just based on what I have seen in the comments sections. I have found most Digg users tend to be in their 20's while Reddits readers are older. Reddit also tends to lean more towards politics and less towards tech and games.
- Darkness123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is add more fuel to the rumor that Digg is in talks to be bought out.
- AlphaBronco, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1Just started using Digg about a month or so ago...and signed up for reddit today. I must say that Reddit is definitely more responsive. I also find the minimalist feel appealing, even if the aesthestics are somewhat ugly as compared to dig.
- searchweaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yep, it has been posted there... and its currently their most popular news there!
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2maybe digg has been offered chaces to be acquired before, but just turned them down.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if this story/page have been posted on reddit? hehhe
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1!!!!!!!!!!! makes it even better.
- johnie1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1well that's ***** that up, wired is *****. No there's nowhere good to get news on the net anymore
- timjbart, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3do you think they'll change how reddit looks and it's features, or do you think it was bought because of its simplicity?
- merm, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7>Yeah man, I always hate it when i go to CNN and I find the same news that I just read on MSNBC.
Word. I hate it when I'm surfing the net and I come across something I've already seen on another site, it isn't really worth using multiple sites when they all have the same content. That's what I really hate about the internet.
Why can't we just have one website for everything? - 1421, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1breaking news....NOT by google.
- shout, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2just pick one and stick with it.
- xenubaba, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5reddit interface is simple and nice and it load hell lot faster than digg.
but damn it, what's wrong with the people there? the top stories are SO LAME.
I prefer delicious's popular page. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I have alwys seen there crap stories on the homepage and quality things never on homepage. :-|
- diagonalfish, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2You got sources and statistics to back this up or are you just spouting off? :)
- Flawless, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9But BusinessWeek said Kevin Rose made 60 MILLION off of Digg!
(/sarcasm) - gr8whitesavage, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5@davidkeithjones: Prove it.
- diagonalfish, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Ah, so what you meant was "no". Thanks for clarifying.
- joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4reddit ***** sucks, bunch of dirty hippies. Reddit is where you go when you need someone to explain to you why North Korea is heaven on earth and America is the devil
- CristianMezei, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4I think Reddit users have serious social issues. I don't know what kind of stories make the frontpage there, but I have seen realy quality stories that got hammered really bad by morrons (that were old there). Digg users are known to be sarcastic and to hate spam and bad news, but they are simply more practical overall.
Any important piece of news will always be on Digg's frontpage first. Much larger community. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2BREAKING NEWS!
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2lava: that's what sites like http://www.newsique.com/ are good for.. ;)

What is Digg?
