The DRM, the Windows Media Player, XP, and IE requirements are rediculous for BitTorrent. It completely ignores the Linux community that helped make it hugely popular, and the fact that PIRATES USE THE SAME SOFTWARE TO GET FREE CONTENT.
This is BitTorrent for your wittle gramma. It's like trying to convince Napster users to adopt iTunes for the "convenience" of one time play and $4.00 a view. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Cohen had a great idea with the bit torrent protocol. It changed the internet as I knew it.
When he decided to turn bittorent into a business, I thought to my self, OK the guy needs to make a living.
I remained optimistic that he wouldn't be blinded by dollar signs.
He lost points when:
He bought utorrent and took over dev when it was going just fine. Whats the matter, can't make a client that doesn't SUCK?
He unveiled the "BitTorrent Entertainment Network" which leaves a trashload of people in the dust.
Now you are just ***** us Mr. Cohen. I don't like to get *****. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16sell out

I agree. Bram Cohen portrayed himself as an "anti-system" person to all the people who used P2P. If he's suddenly become Mr. Capitalism now, he's really betraying his original roots. But I guess he needs to pay the bills. - upasaka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I honestly hope the guy can make some cash from the deal. I wouldnt pirate stuff if it could be brought to me in an affordable, non drm'd, linux (or other non-windows) compatible format. i miss allofmp3
Having said that, ill still be using bittorrent for its intended purpose :) My Bandwidth is not free, and if they want to use it, i'd expect a cut of the profits. - alastria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bittorrent

:P - iheartbeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think he's a sellout. I think he's managed to pull the wool over the eyes of the entire entertainment industry. Execs hear "bittorrent, bittorrent, bittorrent" and say "get me that bittorrent guy, we need to get our stuff on his site."
Bram just sold them a big bottle of Snake Oil 2.0, and they don't even realize it yet.
Why is anyone going to download DRM from bittorrent.com, when they can get it DRM-free elsewhere? - puttly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@shishgupta
i like to get kissed before i get ***** - blood diamond - andrewpmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most of BitTorrent's content is only available in the US. So there's no chance I (a Canadian) will be switching away from The Pirate Bay anytime soon.
- joshpowell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I don't get is -- why Bittorrent? You have to pay for something that you still have to seed and upload. There are HTTP download services such as Vongo that offer basically the same thing but you don't have to worry about peer speeds or seeding. There isn't a major difference in the price either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if I'd call him a sellout just yet. In all likelihood, Bram is going to end up making a personal fortune - by taking the investments from the media companies to pay for distribution, and then the whole thing will fail, just like every over-restricted distribution system always has. He'll probably end up with a couple million in the bank, the media companies will have lost a few million, and it'll all be over.
- PAJK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@sishgupta, Cohen must think you look like a bitch.
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Why would he be addressing Mark Cuban?
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4communist
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3hmmm. I think he knows the commercial side will fail. But this agreement keeps them off his back, while the original users continue to use it as he originally intended-hiding in plain sight, so to speak.
