- Tyr86, on 10/10/2007, -4/+84Dugg just for this on the signup page: http://www.billshare.org/user/signup
"After you join...
1. Create or join a group
2. Start adding receipts and payments
3. ???
4. Profit" - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+581. hang dry erase board on fridge
2. divide total monthly payments by total number of roommates
3. write the number down, collect payment.
Does everything have to be web 2.0 these days??? - jimbohawkins, on 10/10/2007, -2/+54It great that the internet has finally gotten around to connecting people who live in the same house...
- funk49, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Is there an web app that will make your roommate pay their half on time? I WANT THAT APP!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25For real man. I still send messages via telegram.
- bfdhud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Nice website, has the potential to be useful if you live with roommates. As far as I can tell the site doesn't ask for any more personal info than digg. (name/username/pass/email). No actual banking info passes through the site.
- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18This would work really well for a cult or a commune, too.
- signal15, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Imagine integration with Google Checkout, so your roomies could pay the person that actually owes on the bill, or pay the biller directly and show everyone in your group that you paid your part.
What if landlords could use it to send a group of roomies their rent bill for the month, and have them all pay their rent using Google Checkout? As a landlord, it would make my job much easier. - kbeeveer46, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I signed up thinking it may work for just myself but it looks like it's really only useful if you have roommates or people who share your bills.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15I think that this would actually work well for students.
Anyway.. because it mentions cable I wanted to share with the rest of my fellow student diggers how to get comcast cable and internet for only $19 a month.
If you live in an apartment and already have Comcast, call them and tell them that you want to cut your cable but retain your internet. They will of course try to charge you >$50 or something similar for just the internet. Then you tell them you want the $19 month special for 6 months. There's nothing in the contract that states that the $19 month offer does not apply to current Comcast customers. The operator will then agree and proceed to give you the $19 a month special.
Here's the good part. Comcast can't separate internet from cable t.v. in most complexes. Thus, you will be able to to keep your basic cable while paying just for the internet. This deal of course only last for 6 months, but it's long enough to get most of us through a semester.
Sorry to go off point. Just thought it may help someone out.
- PayneX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I'd rather not pay a surcharge on paying my housemates....who are, by definition, in the same house as me.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Why does every web 2.0 app look exactly the same?!?
- cptnjack, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Checkout buxfer as well, http://www.buxfer.com/ . They have similar features, I find buxfer's interface better.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I'm sure that Google will probably buy them out eventually.
- reconbot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Billmonk.com anyone? They allow shared bills between firends. You can go out for dinner and stick someone with the bill and work it out at any time.
That's a really bad description. Here's another.
Track Money
* Roommates - split rent, utilities
* Friends - track casual debts
* Restaurants - pay now, figure it out later
* Settle up - send money to your friends instantly
They got bought up by obopay which is.. some paypal clone. You don't have to use that, it's still got 100% of what it was before. - jshiflet, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12now all they need to do is integrate PayPal into it and it would be the ULTIMATE app for roommates!
- KevinMarkVI, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Great App. Can see it preventing a lot of problems and passive-aggressiveness when it comes to paying bills every month.
- radam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8that's what attack squirrels are for.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I liked this better the first time when it was called billmonk.
- turbojugend23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yeah, check your math dude. If the first guy pays $50 and the second guy pays $25 the first guy is only owed $12.50. Apparently you really do need this program. Maff is hard.
50+25=75 75/2=37.50 50-37.50=$12.50 - BigSax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Everyone who has had a roomate before knows this was done long ago.
Is there anyone who HASN'T sent a roomate an IM while sitting close enough to yell what you need to say and be heard? - mediaphile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You really keep seperate rolls of toilet paper by the *****?
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Sometimes it's hard to get everyone together. This just makes it a lot easier.
- eggi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8really cool site. i hope you expand the functionality of this site in the future. I already love it though - i will force my roommate to sign up and start using it when he gets home.
- samuraitiki, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7kegbot
- d03boy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Sometimes roommates share more than just the utilities and rent. Toilet paper, cleaning supplies, borrowing money, etc... this makes it easier to keep track of.
- MatttK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I like Billmonk cause it is general purpose.. not just for roommates. So you can use it to split all kinds of stuff, like one person pays for movie tickets, while another pays for dinner, etc. It keeps track of who owes what and shows who really is owed (so one guy pays $50 bill, while another pays $25.. first guy is obviously owed $25). I love it.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I wish there was something similar to PayPal without the surcharges. We really need some competition to PayPal.
- vonskippy, on 10/10/2007, -9/+13How impossibly ***** stupid do you have to be in order to need a website to help you do this?
I know public education sucks, but come on. - Jelfish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It might not work as easily with room mates who already signed a lease, but it could work if you negotiate it before you make the final commitment to share an apartment. After all, ideally, all room mates would want the bills to be paid on time.
- FireRabbit, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Hey everyone, thanks for the nice words about BillMonk!
If anyone has any comments, we'd love to hear about it.
https://www.billmonk.com/contact/contact_comment
Thanks! - Solkre, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I know all of my landloards never gave a *****. $XXX had to come out of our apartment and it was out job to make it happen, not the landloards.
- roadies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been using Billmonk.com for almost 2 years. It's fantastic!
Let's say I pay for John's lunch on Monday. The bill comes to $24. John tells me that he'll pay for my lunch sometime in the future. I'm cool with that so we jot the expense in Bill monk.
Then John pays for lunch a week later at someplace a bit more expensive. The total bill comes to $32. Billmonk would then note the difference of the two items and remind me that I still technically owe $4 to be totally even. The group of friends I eat out with doesn't really care about the price difference of two lunches, as long as everyone contributes their fair share. After several group outings, Billmonk comes in handy because we can track who really should offer to pickup the next check.
I can also use Billmonk track books, DVDs, video games and CDs that I've loaned out to friends. I haven't used this much and really need too. I'm sure I have a copy of Doom II still loaned out to my network of friends somewhere. - spellcheckd, on 06/28/2009, -2/+5try www.billmonk.com for a comparable alternative
- dview, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just think of the times that you're enjoying dinner with just one roommate instead of all of them, happens more than you'd think. This tool makes it all easier for you.
- woudenberg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2We still use this app on a daily basis, great work! To bad you have to make new data files by hand, that's the only feature that's missing.
- endgames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2When you say you live with chic's, you mean your mom and sister right? ;-)
- Kiel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I've been using billmonk.com in my sharehouse for a while. Its always worked well for us, but this is much prettier.
- aiten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2We have six people in our house. We share bills in different amounts. Normally an excel spreadsheet is emailed out so people can view it at work, but everybody has their own way of doing things.
This is a standard format, universally accessible from anywhere in the world, and it keeps all the bills in one place.
In summary:
Shut up, shut up, and then shut up.
But yes, public education sucks, I wish i'd been privately schooled. - p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And each toilet roll has their names marked in permanent marker (needless to say you would have to mark often).
Also I'm calling ***** on this (no pun intended) cuz if you run out of toilet paper, your not NOT going to use someone else's toilet paper. And yes I am aware I used a double negative. - Roger, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I actually need something like this. Currently I'm using a basic Google Spreadsheet, but I'm reluctant to start depending on a site that could go belly up at anytime. Plus you never know how private your data will be with some random website.
- robuk24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Good luck to the guy. Nice design.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Seems like you just put in expenditures and divvy it up then print invoices. No banking here.
- chriskey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Chris K says: What you want for dinner
Chris W says: Dunno, burgers?
Chris K says: yeah alright
Chris W says: see you in 3 secs
same most days. - chriskey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2everything you buy together, just split and add it to the total. If you take it in turn paying for things, it will keep evening out anyway
- MatttK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Billmonk is awesome. FYI: They have a Facebook app now that let's you do it all from within Facebook too.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Dugg for the public education slander
- Gsicht, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Because they all have the same version, duh.
- BeavisMcSleavis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31. Dry erase board on kitchen wall
2. Can't divide evenly...they pay Cable TV...I pay super fast Digg downloads.
3.Write amounts down...and oh yeah... I live with Chic's. Some how they find an excuse for EVERY ***** thing in the world to do with money they don't have and try to throw it back on me for not "swiffering" the "reality TV room" that I never go into. You know the one I have my couch, and my chairs, and my EXTRA computer and my coffee table and my ***** TV and stereo system in!
4. I'm sorry diggers...I just hope this App helps me through the next month of bills...in MY NAME! -
