- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Is he reading a speech from 1998?
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Well you *are* talking about someone that admittedly refuses to let his kids use Google.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The real motivator for this Internet-focused garbage is the attempt by big companies to move to a service model. That means handing your nutsack over to another company to squeeze whenever they feel the need to increase revenue. Real smart.
The whole thing smacks of supply-side market manipulation. And by the way, HTML as an application interface is bad; the API sucks, it's not amenable to substantive improvement, the computing overhead is high, and the result is iffy. I personally don't want my browser to be my desktop, I want more control over my computer than that. - cooperwd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Keep in mind that this was an interview conducted at a corporate chin-wag by Gartner, whose corporate audience are at least 5 years off the cutting edge. Web apps might be old news on digg, but trust me -- they're still a mind-bending new paradigm in many corporate boardrooms.
Ballmer knew who was was talking to, and it wasn't you. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13hate to break it to ballmer, but i dont think this is something "new"
- garethevans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I do think that we're in a transition where software goes from something that's in its pre-Internet day to something we call Live"
So that's why those guys keep tacking the "Live" suffix onto everything they can get there hands on. - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That dude has issues.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15What an idiot monkey-man.
- Pother, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why does anyone listen to this man when he speaks?
Sure he's rich and powerful, but has he ever added any piece of wisdom to the worlds of either business or information technology?
If he has, someone make a list and let me know.
Until then I'm not paying attention to the guy.
He ought to be in one of the wrestling leagues... - sydtsai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am guessing the brown Zune... it's BROWN!
- davidod87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On-premise software. Internet-delivered content. Web 2.0. Buzzword nonsense.
- macniatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well the same as .Net.
Messenger .Net, Passport .Net, Visual Studio .Net. - iNoles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm so glad, i didn't go to Symposium/ITxpo event. Ballmer speech is so 1998 and did misinformation from the borg.
- Bronstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone have a link to that Keynote speech that Ballmer gave where during his intro he's jumping around like an idiot and sprains his ankle and is wincing in pain but he keeps up the charade so no one can tell? That was classic!
- Razster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Seems like he has his eyes closed and ears plugged up. The guy needs to open them both up.
- fantasticjon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Network software sounds like a nice idea, but it is really a very stupid idea.
What does it add for the end user?
1. Able to access their docs from anywhere.
2. Always have the latest version of software. (whether that is good, I am not sure.)
What does the end user lose?
1. Their docs are at risk of being lost, read, or compromised by the holding company.
2. The user is somewhat locked into the vendor and presumably must pay a monthly fee.
3. The user will not be able to work if the network is unavailable or the service is down.
The shortcomings are not worth the advantages. People want to hold onto their files and their right choose what to do with them. I might consider trusting google with some of my files, but I wouldn't trust MS. - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seems to me that Ballmer and Captain Obvious must be in cahoots. So long as Romero doesn't get a hold of the information, we *might* be okay.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These lines are blurring? Really? In what way? Calendars, address books, and photo sites aren't going to remove the necessity for "on premise" software. Just because there are quite a few cool web sites doesn't mean all software is moving to be web based.
Can you imagine playing Grand Theft Auto as a web application? - FinishdLawSkool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ballmer is an idiot. He should not be referred to for technology developments or otherwise. He should be referred to for lack of anti-perspirant use and acting like an insane gorilla on stage in an effort to motivate folks but accomplishing nothing aside from keeping the stock value low...
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Balmer is a remnant from a bygone era, and he does not represent the hard working people at Microsoft.
He will retire soon. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guess who read an article in Forbes ;-)
- jragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh my god, this is an actual quote:
"I want to squirt you a picture of my kids." - Bronstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc4MzqBFxZE
Pay attention to 21s in. You can see him roll his ankle and hear his pain! Hahahahah - xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ohh my God Ballmer should have been fired a LONG time ago all he cares about is Microsoft's bottom line not Innovation, he NEVER cares about customers both home & enterprise and he does not even have a good grasp on Technology. Microsoft needs a CEO that is somewhat a visionary or something along those lines..
- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You forgot .Net.Net
- ddales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Cool, sounds weirdly familiar, when Ellison said "The PC is the network".
Everyone laughed then, but Oracle is still kicking ass in the market and Larry's Dream is starting to come true.
Just not with his Company - bakermd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ballmer's just doing his job. Honestly, would you want it? You're CEO of a company that strives for mediocrity, fearing any technology too "scary" that may make your installed base consider such "crazy" things as Linux again. The bottom line of the speech, "We're a huge company, and we are telling our Fortune 500 customers (who stay at least 5 years behind the bleeding edge) that this type of service delivery method is OK, and you can safely utilize it via the Microsoft offering." Well, add about a hundred buzzwords and doublespeak in there, and that's about it.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0*Insert dumb, generic, Slashdot-esque joke about flying chairs*
