What part of $600 drive and $20 per disc seems "affordable" to you? - Spidy1000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28This will be the first step to a clone tool for Blu-ray discs, now all we need are affordable drives and media.
- smellythai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25You better clone them now. They wont exsist in 3 years.
- bodger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Why would I pay $0.80 a GB for a relatively slow disc when hard-drives are ~$0.30 a GB?
- VeryAngryJim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15no, he said affordable.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Good god, people really get worked up about this anti-sony stuff.
- bichi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10next time, starter linkage, at least...

by the time this article hits 300 diggs it will be down to .29 a gb for hd space...i give it 10 minutes. - Civil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Since HD-DVD and Blu-ray will play videos encoded with all the same codecs (h.264, VC1, mpeg2), that means that you could back up your HD-DVD's or Blu-ray discs to writable blu-ray media. I'm sure the cost will come down, I remember paying $15/ea for my CDR discs.
- Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I heard the porn industry already voted HD-DVD, that's what will win.
- JeremyTTU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6NOW this should totally settle the blu-ray / hd-dvd race... oh wait... now they are tied again... dammit...
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You know what's funny, I bet you said the same thing when DVDs came out.
We will have terabyte hard drives this year. The space will come. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"4. People who own PS3's also buy blur-ray movies"
-------
PS3 owners? What... all 10 of them?
I'm willing to bet there are more owners of the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on than there are PS3 owners.
That said, both suck. I'll be sticking to regular DVD as long as I can. - thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Another boot in the side of DRM. Not long to go now!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I agree to an extent. These guys are true supporters of the freedom of information, culture, history and art. I'm glad they can spend the time to fight to make the world a better place. The concept of making money off information is completely wrong, information should be shared and not artificially restricted. No I don't care if Hollywood goes bankrupt or Sony can't sell music, the world changes and that's just too bad for them. If they don't make new movies because they can't make money, that is a price I'm willing to pay. RIP MPAA, RIAA and don't crawl your way back up from hell.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3stupid link to blogspam article... ***** you, AttackMantis!
- waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I sure hope your right. Sony actually having a successful format would be horrible for consumers considering their presence in the RIAA and MPAA.
- adamlazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it wrong to say that the REAL battle will begin now? After we get the correct drives and more media? All thanks to some man who's nickname is a breakfast cereal.
- theturnmaster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+83. There are more blu-ray players out there then HDDVD's
please provide proof that there are more dedicated bluray players out there and hd-dvd
4. People who own PS3's also buy blur-ray movies
please provide proof that People who own PS3's also buy blur-ray movies
otherwise, please shut up - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Way too much time on their hands, but hey, who can blame them? They're doing the world a favor.
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BackupBluray? Hip Hop Hooray?
wha? - waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony! (insert pause here)...Sucks!
Sony + RIAA + MPAA + DRM = World Domination - Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What a weak hard drive!
In any case, you can transcode it to Xvid and save at least half the space (at lossless or near-lossless quality, much more with a lossier compression). - SSYe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RiAA is mainly comprised of sony music....
- grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't hate Sony because I support Apple, and I am not some fanboy that obsesses over his xbox either. I just hate the fact that they call their customers thieves. They try to stop all this pirating, but in reality they are failing. So I like to celebrate their failure, what is wrong with adding insult to injury to those who don't care about others, especially their customers. I say ***** them.
- sotopheavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now all we need is for somebody to burn porn on a blu-ray disc just to spite sony!
- tim507, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@edzieba
Thats cause Removable media doesnt have anything else to them...moving parts, electronics, chips boards etc...
A Removable disk is basically just that..the GB price may be going down,..but the other parts might not be for that device.. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why would I pay $0.80 a GB for a relatively slow disc when hard-drives are ~$0.30 a GB?"
... and you don't need an additional upfront cost of $600 for a player. $20 for a cable and removable hard disk tray if you don't shop around. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whereas DVDs are £0.10 for 4.4gb, or about 2 pence per gigabyte. That beats the hell out of HDDs. Removable media per-gb prices seem to drop a lot faster than HDD prices.
- SSYe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What part of 66.6 mbps do you not get?
- gasyoun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I mean I've installed the Office Backup Utility trial and it seems to work no bad. Not fantastic, the speed is not what I have been awaited, but it has not spoiled any of my discs and all copies go out verified.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Odds that people will use this for legitimate backup purposes and not just thieving the Bluray titles are hovering at around 0.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nobody else saw this about 18 hours ago, or on yesterday's top 10 list?
http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Blu_Ray_DRM_Cracked -- 1500+ Diggs - pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The porn industry voted Blu-ray a year ago. They just follow what they think will be the biggest. Format. The biggest format. Perv.
- antifreeze11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1HD-DVD still has porn in its corner.
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I still think the percentage of people that will actually care is quite low. With my current hard drive completely wiped clean, I can store 5 Blu-Ray movies? C'mon...
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3These people don't give a damn about freedom. They care about getting things without paying for them.
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1steven401
I guess you missed the part where he said affordable. $500 for a drive is way to expensive right now. This also seems to be a bit of reach right now but will be very nice in a year or two.
Think of it now 1TB drives are just around the corner and blue ray / hddvd drives will come down in price. Mix that with the ability to rip em and it should get pretty ineresting. - steven401, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I guess I missed the /sarcasm on the end of my post.
- Petarded, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Anybody else thinks this guy is DVD Jon?
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1No, you can write them to HD media.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"A new utility has just been released inAds by Google"...
- DizConnected, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0This should make it possible for people to rip the blu-ray exclusive movies and then burn them on HD-DVD if that is the only stand alone player they have. That is if they have a blu-ray reader and an HD-DVD writer in their computer...
- combustion8, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0nm....
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2"What part of $600 drive and $20 per disc seems "affordable" to you?"
Maybe he thinks it's Canadian dollars. That's what... $24 and 50¢? - grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -17/+7***** you Sony!
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Neither will HD-DVD's
- nhassan, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1yeh, we need affordable disks and drives

http://www.supermediastore.com/philips-blu-ray-disc-in-jewel-case.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Now I can download 25gb video files, taking 5 days (with usenet)!
does anyone really care?
