http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackmail
Blackmail is the crime of threatening to reveal substantially true information about a person to the public, a family member, or associates unless a demand made upon the victim is met
Blackmail is similar to extortion. - renanrrinaldi, on 06/29/2009, -3/+631 - Detect piracy.

- whiteblackninja, on 06/29/2009, -0/+24When you get one, mark it as spam, and then every similar e-mail goes to spam as well so problem solved!
- liquisoft, on 06/29/2009, -3/+27Isn't this extortion?
- codyman, on 06/29/2009, -2/+24so when Zappa released the album "We're Only In It For The Money", he was right, huh?
Oooooh the irony -- he wasn't anti-establishment, he was FOR the establishment - AFreeSpeaker, on 06/29/2009, -3/+25If I was ever bankrupted by a bunch of greedy suits, I'd probably march into their offices with an AK-47 and clear the place out.
- stolemycar, on 06/29/2009, -2/+23***** THE RIAA
- AriaNoelle, on 06/29/2009, -1/+21They're trying to force people into paying based on simple allegations, and if the alleged pirates don't settle, then they are going to be bankrupted. Plenty of innocent people would pay $10 because it's cheaper than hiring an attorney.
- zeppo, on 06/29/2009, -2/+21It's only a crime if you are poor and try to do it. If you already rich no crime is committed.
- NodOfficer, on 06/29/2009, -0/+19"It then automatically sends an email to the ISP linked to the IP-address with a request to forward it to the associated customer."
They'll snail mail your physical address. - mehan, on 06/29/2009, -0/+191. Your ISP knows everything you do on the Internet.
2. They have your mailing address.
3. They can redirect all your http traffic to a webpage with the message. - khedoros, on 07/31/2009, -1/+20Wow, I hate it when people make it public that I'm an adulterer or pedophile...
- brainflakes, on 06/29/2009, -2/+20Sounds like a protection racket to me.
That's a nice MP3 you've got there, be a shame if something were to... happen... to it. - mrkmrk, on 06/29/2009, -7/+24AND I'LL EVEN THROW IN A "GO TO HELL" CARD FOR FREE FOR ANYBODY THAT DIGGS YOU DOWN!
- jnc2134, on 06/29/2009, -3/+20*their....
- denizen42, on 06/29/2009, -0/+17That should be small print
- chongli, on 06/29/2009, -2/+19And how exactly does my ISP forward the message to me? My ISP does not know my e-mail address.
- portnoy, on 06/29/2009, -1/+17That's an excellent business model, but then extortion always is if you can get away with it.
What the industries have to do is find a way to make customers feel good about buying their product, especially the music industry. The last 5 years I haven't been able to bring myself to "buy" music, the thought of paying into that corrupt backward system makes me feel dirty. You can only abuse your customers for so long. - 4lun, on 06/29/2009, -0/+15I think 1$ a song would bankrupt most pirates, everyone I know who downloads has a library of around 5,000 songs and most of them (including me) are students living off loans and overdrafts.
- mjk340, on 06/29/2009, -1/+16BUT IT CAN SERVE AS AN ADMISSION TO GUILT IN FUTURE LITIGATION!
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -3/+17@Syphon8
1. Yes they do - NeoTechni, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14From the RIAA's perspective, that encourages people to keep pirating. They want to discourage it.
Or rather, from the RIAA's perspective, we're going to lost our stranglehold on a market we never deserved or earned in the first place, we need to exploit it for as much money as we can before our "talent" (if it can be called that) realizes they can make more money without us - MAGZine, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15I won't lie, that's actually pretty crafty.. annnddd it's also a complete dick move.
- suntzusputnik, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15class action lawsuit anyone?
- ChiaGod, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14If you do so, you can look forward to 72 Virgin Records albums* in the afterlife.
*Though they may be all unsold Spice Girls albums, you might get lucky and get a little Daft Punk. - Suricou, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15No need for the ??? though. Step three is obviously 'take protection money.'
- Suricou, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13Lawyer.
- roostersheep, on 06/29/2009, -1/+14@all
1. I think some of us are just making ***** up. - nyxerebos, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13Send then a $15 bill for reading their email and a $8 'processing fee' for making the payment. Then email again in a few days asking where your $13 is, and point out that you may have to refer the debt to a collection company if it is not paid within two weeks.
- twigboy, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12are there any nigerians working at the RIAA?
- denizen42, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12He's right, you should only go for the greedy suit ones.
- SPNKrPunk, on 06/29/2009, -2/+14No, because they don't call it extortion.
/s - CylonsOfTheLamb, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12*****
- marcb83, on 06/29/2009, -0/+11at 10$ a song that will still bankrupt most pirates.
- ultralights, on 06/29/2009, -0/+11yeah, that business model will earn respect from your customers and fans.
- ranon78, on 06/29/2009, -4/+15PAYING THE TEN DOLLARS DOES NOT GIVE YOU IMMUNITY FROM BEING SUED.

Bankruptcy immanent.
What is that term for habitual litigant? - spookyttws, on 06/29/2009, -5/+15They've been doing (something like this) for years now, and all it's done is to hurt random individuals and completely destroy any public image they had. I guess if you see your business model dying you can either innovate (see Apple) or try desperately to hold on to something no matter what the cost (see RIAA, MPAA, etc...). The odd thing they don't realize is that they've completely alienated an entire generation. Basically anyone 13-30 hates them. It's going to be interesting to see who goes bankrupt in the new ten years.
- AriaNoelle, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10Unless THEY decide you MIGHT have pirates. No trial. Guilty until proven innocent.
- khedoros, on 07/31/2009, -3/+11@DestroyFascism
1. Not necessarily. Depends on how much traffic you send encrypted to proxies. - MizuhoChan, on 06/29/2009, -4/+12Let's see...
So I'd owe them around $0.
I win. - Boracho, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8After working for Time Warner I can assure you the only method they have of doing this is by redirecting your DNS. If you hardcode your DNS to a third party provider, say OpenDNS, all they can do is shut your connectivity off completely. No unsolicited messages from them via a forced webpage!
- MentalBeaver, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Way to what now?
