- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10somebody smart once said they're not selling community, they're selling identity. myspace is full of lonely, lonely people with 537 friends.
- jawadshuaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4These are bad days to be a Muslim. I am a Muslim so I know. While it is mostly our fault, but there is a certain amount of heat we feel. Everyone is biased, and there is nothing wrong with that. But I have seen a lot of comments on Digg that are just racist.
- mitrebox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hey myspace: This story is in your extended network.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what do you think would happen if someone created a site that molded the profile driven aspect of myspace together with the content driven aspect of digg?
does anyone think this is a good idea? Just trying to get some opinions... - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What is a myspace?
- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The author claims that there are strong anti-Muslim feelings growing on digg. Maybe I haven't noticed, but is this really true? I mean there will always be racist *****, but I thought digg users were fairly tolerant.

just read an article saying "bebo" was the most searched for thing in 2006, apparently its a new social networking site. has anyone heard of it?
im asking only because for the most popular search over the last year, ive never heard of the place. maybe im just not cool enough or something. - ThePug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A good read.
- yonnermark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why would a digg user be tolerant?
the more mainstream digg becomes, the more it will become an accurate reflection of society as a whole. - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Apparently this guy is starting his own social media network. So I guess he knows what he's talking about. However, his home phone number and private email address are one click away from this article. Not something you want showing up on Digg (or on the Internet, IMO).
The point: If he's that casual with his own contact info, how do I know he'll protect mine? This is the kind of thing you HAVE to think of when you're launching something of this scale. Such decisions affect not only your site, but they also affect how much weight people give to your ideas. - Warnke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's an interesting article but in the end his opinion that niche is the way to go is just an opinion. He's probably so strong in this "niche opinion" because he helped code the social network he posted the article on.
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes these are bad days to be muslim
- jawadshuaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey Stone, that's a valid question. Anyone can call me...it's not a big deal for me. However, privacy of my members is another issue. Take a look at www.shuzak.com; the only thing necessary to register is your email. Unlike other social networks, I do not require location, zip code, etc. In other words, I don't even ask people to trust me...because they shouldn't.

Thats probably the smartest and well informed comment I've heard all week - m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've heard about it, but there is no way in hell I'm going to use it.
I don't even use MySpace. Main reason? I'm not a tool. =P - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I check Digg many more times a day then my stupid myspace page.
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My thoughts exactly.
- Dunnston, on 10/30/2009, -0/+1@ sembetu - Its one of the popular social networking sites it commonly function like facebook and others.
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3punch the balloon and win a free ipod
- jawadshuaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bebo is for UK what MySpace is for North Americans. That's why you might not have heard of it. Bebo is big in the UK. In fact, there is a chance they might sell out for more than $600 million!
- jawadshuaib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is actually true. I wouldn't have spent the last four months running a niche social network if I didn't think it was the future. You are right, I am biased.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2actually our analysis shows that users that seek high feature quantities don't stick around as long as users that are looking for something narrow. those users like to come in, tweak, play with the interface, see if they got in on the early stage of something cool, then they are off to their next new thing. It's also supported by the fact that the number of people still using Usenet/nntp is so high, despite the usability differences.
Aside from feature and functionality though is the popularity and 'pop' fanatacism about a site. It doesn't take long for young people to become bored with something they see on MSNBC with their parents asking "what's a blog Jimmy" over dinner...
This blog article is a lot of opinion, some fairly speculative, and a lot of his references get fuzzy on close examination. - drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they invented this back in the eighties, its called BBS and forums. Social networks is a nice way to sell it and cash in but its obvious small niche communities do well, they always have been and its a sure bet.
- drsnooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The average MySpace user profile might look like it's been designed by a three year old...but it keeps the users hooked."
One of the cleverest things about MySpace is the name - *MY* Space. Users don't stay with MySpace *in spite* of it looking like it was designed by a colour blind emo teen with a bag full of acid and a set of felt-tip pens, they like it precisely BECAUSE they can make it look like a mess. Ever seen the state of an average emo teen's bedroom? It's the same phenomenon. The mess gives them a sense of ownership and marks a boundary between what's theirs and what isn't. It might be a horrific mess, but it's *THEIR* mess - and if you don't understand it then you're not one of them. - yonnermark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I posted my number on my blog and got this drunken phonecall from a visitor:
http://www.yonner.co.uk/yonner-blog/325/love-n-huggles-voicemail - amackens, on 03/04/2008, -0/+0Great article and you pose a very interesting point. Social networks need lots of people for them to grow virally and the trend is heading toward niche social networks. The question is...can niche social networks succeed like the big boys without the large number of users?
- arulprakashar, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0Niche social networks like http://indianbee.com are here to stay, If you want a website a social network which is the indian version of Facebook...and helps you learn something rather than spend most of your time wasting by sending useless application requests then head over to an exclusively Indian social network for learning
http://forums.indianbee.com - drob707, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was inspired by this blog post and have written a riff on it - http://civicactions.com/blog/integrative_social_networks.
- EP235, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am new to designing SN's. Actually, I have never designed anything. Where should I start?
- flexjandro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I missed any clear examples that may reflect who actually IS doing things right.
It can't be all that wrong, can it? - edto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think this is just blatant advertisement for his own social site.
So this domain m4th.com just redirects you to their social network Shuzak.
The blog is really located at http://shuzak.com/Personal/Blog/jawad.php which doesnt really contain much of a blog - jawadshuaib, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The average MySpace user profile might look like it's been designed by a three year old...but it keeps the users hooked. I am designing a social network myself and one of the interesting things I have noticed is that people become more committed to the SN as the number of choices provided are increased. This is probably because once a user has invested an hour of their life customizing their profile, they are not likely to leave the site anytime soon.
