- douggmc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20Uhh ... remind me again why I should be giving/donating money to a private, for profit company? I can think of about 100 different ways to donate money to something/someone in real need.
Wait a minute ... I can't afford hardware to run my software for my new business either. Please send Paypal donations to me at email address: iamaretardsosendmesomemoney@mac.com - gharding, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10How about doing what every other startup does? Get a loan, get a VC, get angel funding?
- bytefoo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Yes, let me give money and a startup, a *business*, so that they can sell their product (or company) and make themselves money. And of course, I get no equity. If this "flickr-killer" can't even get their ducks in a row as far as availability, redundancy, backups, etc, why on earth would anyone purchase their company, let alone use their product. This isn't 1998 when hardware is very expensive. Lessons learned and better luck next time is all I have to say.
- mwolfzorn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Ok, I'm all in!
I am pledging a copy of MySQL or PostgreSQL, OpenSuSE, and PHP. Oh i'll even throw in a copy of Apache.
"It’s interesting. Lots of companies claim to care about startups. Here’s a chance to help one. And, even, get one to switch from LAMP to Windows or something else. Anyone in?"
Does anyone else think this is stupid? They just had a major hardware failure, and they cannot even afford the new hardware, why would they want to buy Windows Server 2003, SQL, etc.? From what it sounds like they were previously running LAMP, so they would have to learn how to setup a Windows Server and convert the database over... - Amoeba16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Who in their right mind is shopping for an "evangelism opportunity"?
Train of thought: "Well, I care deeply about...uh, something -- and I'd just love an opportunity to be zealous. Have you got anything I could be zealous about? I'm not into Jesus and, try as I might, Xenu just seems silly to me. Help!" - justice7, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11exactly what i was thinking -- you beat me to it.
This is just spam - PillowFight, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I like Zoomr well enough (even though--let's be honest--it's a blatant ripoff of Flickr), but I'll say this...they'd probably get more help if their CEO wasn't constantly mouthing off at Flickr's staff like some twelve year-old. And after all his ***** and cries of censorship they kindly sent pizzas anyway.
- taintedzodiac, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Without Zoomr, you'd be sitting at home playing World of Warcraft?
- LegendOfLink, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Dugg because Zooomr rocks; even though Scoble's idea of "let's dump LAMP and kiss my former employer's ass" is retarded.
- sewalsh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Did zooomr trying rebooting the machine?
- taintedzodiac, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Wait a second... correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the article promote migration from LAMP to Windows (or other)?
- mwolfzorn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Usually I don't donate to other people pockets though
- akatherder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/evangelism
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/charity - bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"It ’s interesting. Lots of companies claim to care about startups. Here’s a chance to help one. Anyone in?"
Lots of companies? Companies care about startups only in so much that they are interested in finding one with an opportunity for success, investing in it, and turning a profit.
Maybe that's what the summary meant to say. What's my opportunity for return if I donate hardware? I've got a dual Xeon PowerEdge 2600 with 4 GB of RAM and a PERD 4/Di RAID controller. There are four 74 GB SCSI disks installed. - justice7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3there is a huge difference asking for begz and looking for funding
asking the general public to fund your private business will never go over well
however looking for some investors is never frowned upon - GreenTentacle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3And life would've gone on without Digg ever existing. I know, gasp and shock. Startups die all the time.
Plus I'm more than certain that whoever funded Kevin/Digg got a return on their investment that amounts to more than warm feelings. - justice7, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8something doesn't look right to me about this article
- Terminator1138, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4And just when they get popular will they sell and make huge bank just like hmmm, what was the site, myspace, youtube, just to name a few? While I can appreciate what zooomr is and those who love it, I cannot spend money to donate to save a site that had a pitfall. Many do and if they want to save it, invest and get a loan to buy more. I can see all those donations pouring in and then a year later, google comes in and buys up the site for an undisclosed amount of money, and thus the owners of that site can retire.
- three55ml, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why should people help buy hardware for a for-profit startup? They're not saving the world or curing cancer. The stole a name and concept from Flickr, and now you want people to be "evangelists" by giving them a database server?
First, it's incredibly stupid to run a large online site that relies heavily on a database with only a single MySQL (or other DB) server handling everything, even if you have RAID. HA and load balancing is available for a reason, use it. It's not expensive at all to setup.
Second, any company making even a bit of income should be able to scrape together a thousand bucks to replace the drives that failed in the RAID array. You could even build a nice temporary replacement server from parts available in any big city for about $1,500. - mutatron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4How is this not spam? Why should people donate with no chance of return from a for profit company?
- libertao, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Buried as spam.
- mutatron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That's kind of sad.
- mwolfzorn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Which is why there is a Paypal donate button on http://beta.zooomr.com?
- micsco, on 10/11/2007, -11/+13These guys deserve the support! Keep them in the game.
http://blog.zooomr.com/2007/05/29/zooomr-the-little-photo-sharing-site-that-could/ - llbbl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3you could donate some dough via paypal link bottom of main page. help them buy a new machine for their databases.
http://beta.zooomr.com/ - mstoneburner, on 10/11/2007, -9/+11***** 'em.
- snagz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3At least sell me some stock, that's what it's for!
- GreenTentacle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Giving to what cause ripowell ? A photo sharing website that is a commercial venture ?
A cause is cancer research or saving starving albino amputee penguins, not some failing photo sharing site. - daveappendix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2The point is to ask zooomr USERS for donations, or some hardware from major companies. We don't expect just anyone to come and pony up some cash.
- johnb67, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Zooomr rocks
- DrumsNWhistles, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3If Kevin Rose hadn't gotten funding, Digg would've been in the grave. Think on it, you cynics.
- daveappendix, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4They could do with some donations too to help them get up and running in the short term. Even small donations help.
- estacado, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4It's not even making enough money. You can't expect one of the big companies to buy Zoomr. All of them already have their own photo sites. Zoomr is a dead end.
- rjpowell, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2apparently you don't understand the word "donate". The whole point is your GIVING to a cause and NOT expecting a return.
- TwisterMc, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6I agree. Flickr pissed me off and Zooomr came to the rescue. :)
- davdav, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Thank you, generated account.
- MalphasWats, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6Zooomr makes me excited about taking photos.
- caldroun, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4Want to help? I am emailing companies asking for assistance to a startup.
http://www.spyndle.com/2007/05/30/save-zooomr/ - TrainingName, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2...and this little piggy went "zooom zooom zooom all the way home.".
- trevorcarpenter, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3If Zooomr hadn't come along, I wouldn't have bought a dSLR, 3 new lenses, and all the filters. I wouldn't be out twice a week with the family taking pictures like crazy.
Without Zooomr, I'd be spending less time with my family and wouldn't have met a whole lot of new people.
I love Zooomr. You should too. - explnx, on 04/27/2009, -6/+2When I saw the title of this story, I got worried that the bible belt had taken a note from the Ron Paul crowd.
- realdcurtis, on 06/03/2009, -7/+2But zooomr is so horrifically ugly... and it doesn't ahve any great features that go beyond Flickr. Why are they rearranging the deckchairs?
- mikehedge, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Kris is genius!
- jessielikes, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Sometimes I hope they cooperate with some big company...well, I'm just saying that. It may be a worst result
feel complicated......
Anyway, wish they back soon. - insanebrain, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0Ever heard of a loan ?? no . .its not the same as spam . .sorry.
- realdcurtis, on 06/03/2009, -9/+2No, it's called "making a point" without any tact.
- justice7, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2this is called spam .. bury it.
