Actual discussion of those cities here:
http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/22/wired-cities-2009 ... - d03boy, on 01/24/2009, -0/+12This could be renamed "America's most liberal cities" and still be accurate
- butfaktree, on 01/24/2009, -1/+11Redmond is basically a part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Plus it's probably only about a 10-15 minute drive from MS to downtown.
- natenovs, on 01/24/2009, -1/+8yeh, im sure it has had no influence on seattle at all ::rolls eye
- googooly, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7just go directly to the link
http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/22/wired-cities-2009 ... - t3hbagel, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7Read the article. Seattle is still #1 in that respect.
- penguinofspades, on 01/24/2009, -2/+7or learn to drive in 3in of snow...
- diggface5000, on 01/24/2009, -1/+6Yay us! Now if only we could learn how to salt roads and use snow plows...

- KibibyteBrain, on 01/24/2009, -0/+4That's a pretty extreme Luddite attitude. And naive too, to think Big Brother already can't keep an eye on someone if they really wanted to. You should look at some of the crazy data mining and electronic surveillance technology the NSA and military have, with no need for your feeble desktop computer to help out.
If anything, think about how personal technology has increased a civilian check on technology. Over the last administration, we have seen so many photographs and documents leaked online that probably would have taken months to hit the public eye through traditional media, if at all. Plus, you can also instantly view the press from foreign countries from anywhere in the USA, not just certain academic libraries in major cities or the like. - Kerrigore, on 01/24/2009, -0/+3The title is actually misleading. If you look at the criteria used, per-capita number of wireless hotspots is one of them, along with number of access options (companies offering internet). The title and description would lead you to believe the list in question is merely to do with broadband adoption, but this is false; by that measure, San Francisco would actually top the list.
In fact, Seattle is only number one in the wireless hotspots measure; it is 10th in broadband adoption and 2nd in access options. So actually, the description is quite inaccurate: Seattle is the America's most wireLESS city, not the most wired! - misterjangles, on 01/24/2009, -0/+3thanks! there was no way i was going to click through a 30-page slide show to see this list.
- AquaOSX, on 01/24/2009, -0/+3The computer geeks have nothing to do about it... Seattle runs on coffee.
- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -0/+3I guess when you've lived here for so long, you don't even notice it.
I'd still like to know who the people are who take their laptops to coffee shops, or even go to a Starbucks in general. Why would you pay someone $5+ to make bean-water and type with that awful "world" music in the background? - stickypenguin, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3woot we are teh winners!
now, if Comcast would stop strangling my connection.. - t3hbagel, on 01/24/2009, -1/+3Don't forget the ***** weather and accents.
- LVDave, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2Heck, I'm sitting *in* a Starbucks right now, typing this... Lemme refute one misconception you have: The coffee I'm drinking right now didn't cost no flippin' $5.. It was $2.10, thank you very much! I guess if you drink those foo-foo iced coffee drinks you can pay $4-$5, but that ain't me... You did hit the nail on the head about the crap music they play... I could care less tho, cuz I stream either Pandora or SkyFM while I'm working on my laptop... I've noticed one thing since ATT took over the wifi at Starbucks.. You gotta be brave to try ssh/remote desktop/vpn.. ANYTHING that requires an uninterupted network connection.... When tmobile ran things, the connections were rock-solid.. Now, with ATT, not so much... Course with tmobile, you paid $30-$40/mo for a wifi account.. Now with ATT, 2hrs/day free with a Starbucks card... Has anyone else noticed that they don't hold you to 2hrs/day? Already today, I've been on from two diff Starbucks over 4 hrs... Its my home-away-from-home... Guess you get what you pay for....
- QubitTarutaru, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2This article doesn't mention the fact that the US's broadband is horrendously slow compared to other countries. Wake me up when they get near to Japanese broadband speeds.
- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2Thank god Honolulu is on the list. We're isolated in so many ways (if you want to eat something other than bentos you're out of luck), but you can get broadband and HD cable virtually everywhere.
Now only if someone would make eBay Hawaii so I won't pay $30 on shipping for a $15 product. - michaelrsa, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2I know, Minnesota has a lot of great things, we have one of the countries best public education standards, the highest rate of health insurance (90% last I checked) and one of the countries best environmental health standards.
- seantubridy, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2Go Minneapolis! People always seemed surprised when they learn anything about Minneapolis. It's like the rest of the country thinks it's all farm land or something.
- jsc315, on 01/24/2009, -1/+2Chicago isnt even in the top 20 that really is just sad.
- Typhoon2009, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1Which city has the fastest broadband at the best prices? I know FiOS has a 50Mbps downstream option, but in which city?
- t3hbagel, on 01/24/2009, -4/+5Go Seahawks.
- Rosco, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1Don't feel too bad, there isn't a single city in Michigan on the list. And of course that comes as no surprise at all to me. I need to move out of this state.
- DMCer, on 01/24/2009, -1/+2Did I say it didn't? Of course it does, as most of their employees live in Seattle. I was criticizing the inaccurate description of Seattle as Microsoft's headquarters, by a lady who probably doesn't know a whole lot about the column she penned. ::rolls eye
*Yeah, not yeh. - schrutefan, on 01/24/2009, -1/+2Wired is so 2004.
- CLAWC, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1Denver!
- d03boy, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1So is bandwidth and latency
- seantubridy, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1Yah, now, that's a bit harsh there dontcha know!
- binarybyron, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1you're going to smoke yourself outta your hole? keep off the crack
- staticfire, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1**************Miami, FL
- penguinofspades, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1ya. i'm from spokane. giving people from seattle a hard time when they complain about snow is sort of a hobby around here. not much else to do.
- swiftheart, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1Well it's a context thing. For an outsider, Redmond is Seattle, but as a local these things are much more specific to you.
For a New Yorker, 10 blocks is significant. For someone who's never been to New York, they might have issues distinguishing New York City from New York State.
It certainly isn't the worst local-geography mangling I've seen. I remember the New York Times talked about New Albany, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, because it's the headquarters of Abercrombie and Fitch. They located New Albany as being 120 miles from Cleveland, completely ignoring the nation's 15th largest city right next door. - carlosos, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1http://www.google.com/search?q=fios+availability+m ...
- diggface5000, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1You mean 3 inches of ice with intentionally packed snow on top of it? I watched vehicles of all sorts sliding down our hill and I don't think those drivers can be expected to defy physics.
- natenovs, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1it snowed for 2 weeks. we got over 22 inches.
- Astheria, on 01/24/2009, -1/+1Buried as inaccurate. I've lived in multiple parts of Minneapolis, and we have no where near 20 providers. Try 2. Comcast and Qwest, pick your poison.
- dragzealot, on 01/24/2009, -1/+1At first, I read the headline as 'weird'.
- sadisticmind, on 01/25/2009, -1/+1Santa Clara, Mountain View, San Jose and Milpitas, CA are less wired then Milwaukee? that cant be true.
- invstmntguru, on 09/07/2009, -0/+0Broadband is going to be everywhere soon
http://extremerealestatechallenge.com/?p=402 - AquaOSX, on 01/24/2009, -1/+1Is it really -that- surprising though?
- wehaveleads, on 04/16/2009, -1/+0well, i like this one;) http://www.wehavehomeleads.com
- DMCer, on 01/24/2009, -4/+2Seattle is hardly Microsoft's "home base." Redmond is about a half-hour away and across a lake.
- Mandrillzy, on 01/24/2009, -4/+2"We think your story might be a duplicate of one that was submitted by someone else."
I just tried submitting this story (from forbes.com). This and 2 submitted before this story came up. The OP obviously saw the same duplicate page I did, but decided to post anyways. - M4Quan, on 01/24/2009, -4/+2Good to see a continued effort to get more speed out to all in US. This technology, the internet, makes it much easier for Big Brother to keep an eye on you!
- replaysMike, on 01/24/2009, -4/+1So there's a starbucks on every corner now? What do you expect with so many computer geeks in one area!
- rda1441, on 01/24/2009, -7/+1Who cares about wires. Who's the most wireless cities? Who's actually making use of all the fun on WIFI, 900mhz, 2, 3, and 5ghz?
Time to get away from wires, fiber, ect...
