aimguy2: u thr? - f4nt0m4s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18The Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material!
airplane tubes? pffft - andybeal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Makes you think how bogus it is for them to ask us to switch off wireless devices. They're about to make the entire plane wireless!
- SleepingOrange, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The RIAA is going to sue alaskan airlines passengers for sharing music on their laptops. "But we have your IP!"
- pilot3033, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The main reason for that (as explained on Mythbusters) is that with so many devices, updated so often, it becomes an impossible task to actually test all of them, and see which ones affect the plane, and which don't.
The aircraft manufactures who provide aircraft with services such as internet (Connection by Boeing, etc.), throughly test (for a long time) how the service interacts with their aircraft, and it's navigational equipment. You can also be sure that in the event of an emergency such as instrument failure, the service would be turned off to be sure nothing is interfering with the backup gauges. - 97thfloor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I got stranded for 23 hours in Las Vegas Cause of Alaska Airlines, not even high speed internet could get me to fly with them again. It was handled very badly.
- JeremyL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8So what happens if the Internet crashes? Will they send out the NTSB to investigate?
- whatthefu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Frankly I'm a bit surprised it hasn't been implemented yet in all airlines, what with all the ridiculous technological advances we've had in the past couple of decades.
- drizzlelicious, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Why yes, I do want to bury an ignorant naive racist.
- brianbb98, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6you voting for rudy?
- Namakemono, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Does slapping the salami to some porn at 30,000 ft. qualify you for the mile high club?
- SWGreg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They can't sue whilst over international waters ;)
- Pilot85, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, but it will get you an indecent exposure charge. :p
- Pilot85, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2comm. aircraft EM shielding is fairly robust for high altitude operations. Though it is true it is probably a safety measure, it's probably also so they can fleece you out of a couple more bucks.
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, your typical commercial jumbo jet is shielded against radiation since it flies so high in the sky. They are closer to space. Cell phones, laptops, music players, even if all people on board had one of each, would not generate enough interference to affect the plane. It's just over precautionary stances in my opinion. Planes are the safest way to travel, yet they [airline industry] think they're going to blow up any second.
- kjm2664, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2of all places to get stranded in though - Vegas ain't bad.
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I will vote for any candidate that has assclown profiling to catch and clearly identify ignorant boobs like you
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Beats..
Error 409: The plane crashed due to internet error - Pilot85, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1dugg for the flying joke
- z987k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There's really no reason that we can't use the wireless devices other than the FAA saying so. The FCC has concluded that cellphones/laptops do not interfere with aircraft navigation and communication. Lets take a look at the frequencies we're dealing with. Comms: 118.0-136.95MHz VOR/DME/LOC navigation: 108.0-117.95MHz(notice it's right next to the comms and FM radio) NDB: 190-1799.5 kHz (notice it shares spectrum with AM radio) GPS: 1575.42 and 1227Mhz Loran: 1750, 1850, 1900, 1950 kHz Marker beacons: 75MHz
Wifi: 2.4Ghz, 5.8Ghz
Cell phones: 824.040-848.970, 869.040-893.970 and 1850-1990MHz
Cell phones or wifi even close to aircraft radio spectrum? Not at all. If anything the airplanes own navigational devices would interfere with each other before your cell phone will. - kyleforeman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Alaska Air is the best
- WardC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I remember being on a few American Airlines flights in the mid 1990s, with my little old PowerBook 5300cs (100MHz, 10.4" screen), and they had these credit card swipe payphones on each seatback, and a little data jack (phone jack) that you could hook your modem too. I tried it out a couple times, surfed around at 9600 baud while @ 30,000ft. - updated my website via FTP, chatted a bit on IRC and AIM, checked e-mail...etc. It was cool because this was still while the internet was in its infancy and public broadband (DSL or cable) hadn't hit the market yet...so yeah, the ability to get on the net while in flight has existed for awhile, but nothing that would let you videoconference, stream, or download music, or anything like this...and yeah, my connection cut out, more than a few times. But heck, it was internet in-flight and it was 1997.
- drizzlelicious, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3In-flight internet would add so much win to my 14 hour flights
- Rowan187, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1haha yes. this year we get $1564. actually in a few days :)
- Jalh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1stream live video from the windows will be rock !!!!!!!!
- HyperJack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You think that's bad. I flew from UK to North Carolina with US Airways. On the way there, we were stranded on the tarmac for 2 hours because they had overbooked.
And on the way back, I had a 24 hour delay, and when I actually got on the place, the entertainment system was buggered (And they had overbooked again). I am never using them again. It was my first time in America too. - riceguitar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Will it be owned by T-Mobile?
- hoppdawg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2i get it.
- alpinecow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1only if you're a digger
- minorthreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1hm.. SAS is not an american based company, but I flew with them multiple times last year from the states to europe and had in flight internet access.... So the technology is not all that new.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what about American and Virgin? They're coming out with some serious high speed connections as well. I don't think Alaskan is the first. just take a loot at http://www.aircell.com/
- Pilot85, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Error 409: The internet crashed due to pilot error
- discjockykid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I can't wait for this... seriously... there are so many times when I've had a laptop or PDA on a plane and really wanted to get on the internet. I but it's going to be ***** though and charge $50 to use it for the whole flight...
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I see what you did there.
- winmywii, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Can you join the mile high club if you go solo?
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0An ethernet port with DHCP enabled networking looking out on the net at every seat would be a nice perk.
A power plug would help too. - Rowan187, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Man.. Living in Alaska automatically gives you the trouble of having to fly Alaska Airlines when you want to GTFO. And not even having a little Internet access could make the flight better. and not to mention the only reason they say they're good with satellite internet is because our entire damn state runs off satellite internet. I pay $90 a month for a 1mbit up and 256kb down. with a measly 10gb limit on monthly data transfer. I kind of ranted on alaska.
- mayhemchaos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3sweet, since we apparently can't use cell phones ~ maybe we can IM people when the planes are hijacked.
- Icetype, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Don't people get a bunch of free money just for living in Alaska tho?
- cyberscape2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yeah, this'll never work. All those goddamn poker chips are still in there.
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Remember freedom lovers, Mosque is just another word for Jesus haters clubhouse
- QuickeningYak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Only the most self-important twits will find this is necessary. Sadly, it will be a huge success.
- stuples, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2How is this relevant?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2The internet on an airplane is a series of pitot tubes.
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0"I can't take any more of these motherf#&kin snakes on this motherf#^ing plane, and I'm gonna go blog it right now!"
- MaynardJK, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1good for you.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Nope, the Doctor!
I still believe we need racial profiling at Airports. - brianld, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0Great. As if listening to the dumbass gab on his phone BEFORE takeoff wasn't enough. Now we'll have to listen to him the whole f*ing time on his VOIP client.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -17/+3I really don't feel comfortable about this whole thing.
Bury me if you want, but if I saw a few guys (not saying who) praying to Allah, then getting on their laptops in mid-air, to say the least I'd have to order a stiff drink.
