- jpfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21They already have ads everywhere. They're just so unobtrusive you don't notice them.
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8jp is right. Google showed us how to do online ads *the right way*. They're not making billions for nothing.
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Well, unless GTalk allows you to speak with multiple other Gtalk members at the same time then it's pretty much useless. Skype has set the standard here, Google needs to go a long ways to surpass what Skype has done.
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Offline Google Docs would be killer. Just hope it runs in Linux.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Skype is a closed protocol - which usually means suicide in the long run, or a very small piece of the pie if they stay afloat.
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And a leaked Goobuntu. Please. Pretty please.
- quietbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wonder when Google will give away free wi-fi or cell-phone service coupled with Adsense? Damn those txt-msg ads already!!
- stoppedcode12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what they really need to couple with that is a spreadsheet program that can graph charts. Also, they should include like an 'undo tree' to map out all the undos (and who made them, remember online docs are meant for sharing) that have ever made in a document, this will give them an edge over other word processors. Oh and support for WYSIWYG printing and additional fonts would be nice.
- diig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Site is already down? http://www.diggmirror.com/
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why wasn't InternetNews dugg instead?
- ThePlaymaker62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sooooo.... whats the news on that interoperability with AIM ? seems to me that this client will continue to be sub par (even though its design is quite minimal and ad free) due to the simple fact that they need to make use of that deal with AOL and get this program communicating with AIM.
- JoshHendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sanman: If you are using Google Talk with your Gmail account, your voicemails are emailed to your account, so you don't need extra storage for your voicemails.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Haha, I got a laugh out of that one. Whether he was being sarcastic or not, you gotta say it's funny.
- jron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Asterisk just added jabber/google talk support. The OSS world seems to really be embracing google. Things could finally get interesting with some real competition for skype. As for google talk being a "dead product out of the box" I and many of my friends would disagree =)
Force your friends to get off the proprietary hell hole that is AOL/MSN/Yahoo. You can break the lock in with a little effort. - sanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My loyalty will be to whomever provides the best/most free stuff. If GoogleTalk gives me the ability to make free phone calls into the regular phone system, and to recieve them back from there, then I'll go with them in an instant. Oh yeah, if they throw in some free (4 GB?) voicemail storage, that'll be even better. Then I'll just use some PDA with WiMax to make GTalk calls, instead of having a cellphone.
- hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh...have you ever been to Digg?
- Mikew07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ads Meaning the programs listed in the blog...
There arent any ad's in Google Talk, all those people that use aol & msn messengers have to put up with the ad's built into the software they have on the computer. Thats the only reason i have Google Talk on my computer besides my GAIM and Trilian - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Miranda IM is a really good GAIM alternative, I love it.
- mister711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do not think the cell phone carriers and phone companies would be too happy if Gtalk would access the phone network for free. That could run them out of business.
- ChrisLim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GTalk was a dead product almost right out of the gate. To revive it I think Google is planning to make it a SIP client too as the blog mentions. Can you imagine GTalk as open platform a Asterisk Client or standard VOIP based PBX client. Imagine the possibilities, use your work laptop off site and connect to your PBX, retreive voicemail, call the last few people that called you. They just need GUI designers. The current interface is cr@p.
- jbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GTalk and LibJingle is now 14 months old. It's had a few minor updates but still looks like an Alpha. LibJingle has had zero takeup.
In that same time Skype has had 3 major upgrades. The only way any of the IM-VoIP-Video-IP packages are going to get ahead is to ship more often. The only one I see actually doing this is Skype. MSN, YM!, AIM have all had releases in that time, but they really haven't added anything and the they're all horribly bloated code with nasty aggressive install programs.
Google's apparent inability to ship is really disappointing. Gtalk and LibJingle had the potential to be the one IM that unites them all. I really thought we would see a GTalk-Jabber-AIM-iChat-Trillian-Gaim-SIP convergence but it's not happening.
And let's not forget that IM programs are not just IM any more. To compete you need voice VoIP-POTS interconnect. Conference calls, group chat, video, presence, APIs and plenty of other stuff as well. This is really beginning to hurt the pure IM players like Trillian and Gaim. - joepaterno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Totally killer. Like Notepad killer.
- Mikew07, on 10/12/2007, -21/+1How long till google starts putting ads everywhere?
