- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I have to see any ads at all, I hope targeted ads are all I see on all media. I've already seen all the "feminine protection" ads that I ever need to see.

DIGG++++++ - DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's good! Finally ads that would actually interest ME.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so what? maybe ill stop seeing ads for the amazing line reducer and see ads for the new processor from AMD.
- theevilshiftkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fine with me. I might actually click on ads that are targetted for me instead of the usual worthless crap at the top of my screen that I don't even see any more.
- Magreger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh My God! this can't happen. We all know how much the media turns us into drones if not well educated. This could be bad, this could be real bad.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0advertisers can already target specific people, they just seem to stupid to do so...
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like the future in Minority Report.
"It looks like you need an escape, John Anderton, and Blue can take you there." - gwarm02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's "BLUE"??
- gwarm02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone aughtta watch this particularly part 6: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/persuaders/
- mstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is already happening in 04 and 05....why is this such a surprise to people?
- Chipmunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Always found it amusing that advertisers use the words "target" and "targeting". Yes, that's how ads make people feel.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've noticed ads, usually personals or travel, that seem to know my city. In the time the page loads, they look at my ip/host and customize the ad to let me know that theres lots of horny girls in (insert nearest large city here) that want to meet me. I of course know that those personals are largely fake or spam bots, and those travel sites are search engine keyword hogs. "Find 4 star hotels in hickville!". One thing I hate about google search is that these automated keyword hog sites sometimes take up the whole first page of search results.
- Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Two words: Minority Report.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"advertisers can already target specific people, they just seem to stupid to do so..."
actually, targeting specific people is the easy part. targeting them with a message that resonates with them is the hard part. - kjdude2003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ads are allready personalized if you know where to look... Project Claire (a software app for the PC) lets users know about specific products that would benefit them based on what they are doing. Project Claire is a program for home automation.

i used to work as an Illustrator and dealt with advertising agencies. No disrespect but why is this supposed to be exciting or diggable? Ad agencies could care less about their "targets", they just want to sell you crap and pay themselves outrageously high salaries even if what they are selling is "morally" wrong or useless. I don't want a Pepsi mini commercial while I play Half Life 2 or walk through the airport and be bombarded by "select" personal ads. Minority report? How about trying to be among the minority who wants privacy and no calls from telemarketers in the future ahead? - NickDouglas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good trend article, though I didn't see a particular watershed. But a cool enough trend to get dugg.
- dpl_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So basically adware/spyware is spreading to other media? Great....
- Metafuente, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep dpl people haven't had enough after spyware, I guesst they want more scumware piping through their connections to the net.
- kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just blocked an add from the USA Today website. Hmmm...
- TridenTBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, I hate all Advertisements. Inless it is for something actually interesting. I hate the advertisements that arouse me too...
- kirk95, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not what I meant.... I meant Un-digg as in subtracting from the Diggs. I never hit the Digg button, but I'd like to make...let's call it a negative Digg.... it subtracts from the Digg score.... you know Net Diggs = Positive Diggs + Negative Diggs....
Make sense? - Bigbro69, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1There IS an un-digg button for the last ***** time, it's in your profile. What you're talking about is a 'Bury' feature, which is what we want. Un-doing something is removing what you've already done, n00b.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Reminds of Minorit Report where the ads would speak to you "Hello John Anderton, you should try [instert product here]."
- kirk95, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0negative diggs being a negative number...;-)
- kevin_qnn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^kirk95
i doubt that would work though because if a story brought bad news, people would probably "bury" it and it wouldn't make the front page - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Actually, there is sort of. Under the "problem" pull down you can select "okay, this is lame".
- kirk95, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Was this article written in 1995? That's how old this story is. Those are the exact arguments made by DoubleClick back at the dawn of Internet advertising. I'll have to go dig out my old PowerPoint's. It's like the bust has created a new dark ages where we have forgotten all the knowledge of the past. Sending messages/ads to targeted audiences is nothing new... far from it!
I wish we had an Un-Digg button here. ;-) - Nullifidian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Like all the ads for the armed forces showing repeatedly on G4TV...
Target audience: The young and foolish. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Bah, I misspelled Minority and FlyboyP said it before me anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Like all the ads for the armed forces showing repeatedly on G4TV...
Target audience: The young and foolish.
You get the award for dumbest post of the day. Congrads!

What is Digg?
