10:26 Closing Twitter account - gamben0, on 07/04/2009, -4/+34I'm pretty sure Twitter is ruining Twitter.
- Peach3s, on 07/04/2009, -10/+38OMG ADS!!!!!! who cares
- bunkscene, on 07/03/2009, -6/+32Great, now we can buy what celebrities eat for dinner.
- ECas123, on 07/05/2009, -9/+30HI BILLY MAYS HERE FOR ADBLOCK PLUS.
- ultrafez, on 07/04/2009, -2/+14I actually used Twitter for something useful today - I found out about a fire in a datacentre in Seattle that took one of my favourite websites offline. Ordinarily I would have just looked on normal news websites but standard journalism hadn't covered the subject yet, but people on Twitter were tweeting about it and hence I found my explanation. I proved that Twitter is actually useful for something!
Edit: if anyone is interested, search for hashtag #fisherfire - AndrewDB, on 07/04/2009, -4/+15How do you ruin what was already ruined?
It's like TBS running A CHRISTMAS STORY 24/7 during December.
It still sucks, no matter how many times you watch that god damn movie. - elenaadamscom, on 07/04/2009, -0/+9Solution: install TweetDeck (or similar) and sidestep the whole problem.
- diemunkiesdie, on 07/05/2009, -1/+9Dugg for honesty. Most people rationalize APB by saying they only want to block the big annoying ads that take up the full screen, and that the little ads (like the ones on twitter or on google) are just unintended casualties. But of course that's a lie, people just want stuff for free and are trying to rationalize stealing. I applaud you sir, for saying screw it, I just don't want these companies to make any money!
- JudgeMonkey, on 07/05/2009, -0/+8I think we know Billy Mays would never support that.
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -1/+8Stalkers and people with celebrity crushes would beg to differ.
- SachinD, on 07/04/2009, -2/+9But they are unobtrusive text ads. If they stay like that, things will be fine. If they add Flash-heavy stuff in the borders, then we have something to worry about.
- borez, on 07/04/2009, -1/+8Adds and porn. There's been a huge amount of girls trying to follow me which, on closer inspection, is just porn spam.
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -1/+7ah, the joys of reinventing FidoNet, Usenet, IRC, and E-mail.
- vwllss, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6I've found that twitter is really great for people with friends.
- RadiantSilver, on 07/05/2009, -2/+7Agree 100%
- spdaniel91, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6Good Twitters don't do that. They post useful and funny stuff that they find and do.
- SquareWheel, on 07/05/2009, -1/+5Nor is Twitter.
- blue98camaro, on 07/05/2009, -1/+5Dont all successful websites have ads on them? Good for them!
- marshallk, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4First ads are added as "sponsored definitions" in sidebar of your home page. Federated Media has bought two, one for Microsoft and the other for that Bruno movie that's all over digg.
- tysonxguitar, on 07/05/2009, -1/+5hey i like that movie...
- Thomasaka, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4I find it hilarious that everyone is complaining about ads on Twitter.. by commenting on digg which is a site littered with far more ads than Twitter.
- Barackalypse, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4I've always considered Twitter to have ads by virtue of the fact that the most followed users there use Twitter as a platform for self-promotion, which is basically the purpose of an advertisement.
- senae, on 07/05/2009, -1/+4better solution:
Unobtrusive text ads aren't a problem. Seriously, stop hating otherwise free sites. - ABombbmoBA, on 07/05/2009, -5/+8Is Kevin Rose paying you to care about Digg's profit?
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3Twitter = inverted IRC.
The hashtags take the IRC channel notation of #whatever, but turn them into global messages. Your follower list is like the single unnamed channel you are on where everyone can see whatever nonsense you type at any given moment.
The only thing different here is the framing of the idea. Twitter asks "what are you doing right now?" and that gets people to use it a certain way. But the only difference is in the minds of people using it. It's entirely psychological. - vorda, on 07/05/2009, -2/+5"Perhaps these sources of revenue will help Twitter remain a viable company long enough for all kinds of questions about this brand new medium to be explored".
Brand new medium? I tweet myself and I get the point of it. But what's this nonsense about a BRAND NEW medium. It's a freaking status ripoff from any and every online service that ever had one. The only thing that is BRAND NEW about tweeter is a complete absence of anything else except the status.
Yea - a real patent candidate. - Linake, on 07/05/2009, -2/+5These ads have been there for months now. They're not at all intrusive, so it shouldn't bother anyone that Twitter is actually trying to make a profit from the site.
- astyguy, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3myspace, facebook, twitter .... i wonder what's next ??? digg ???
- SquareWheel, on 07/05/2009, -0/+3***** thing sucks!
- lpcustom, on 07/05/2009, -1/+4I thought Twitter was just an ad network anyway...
- joshuajudah, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2lolconan
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Oh really? Blocking ads is stealing now is it? The internet is public. I choose what comes in to my connection that i pay for. Just because some assgnomes decided they could use the internet to make some cash, doesn't mean we have take their spam. If they don't like it, they can start their own internet and shove ads in each others faces.
- ECas123, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2@aplusk is ruining twitter.
- nicksource, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2Oh no, not adverts on a FREE service...
- AndrewDB, on 07/05/2009, -1/+3I'm sorry Tyson.
- Linake, on 07/05/2009, -1/+3I found out the same thing the very same way! My friends and I were going to geocache last night, but found out about the site we use being down, so we were able to reschedule. Sometimes Twitter is just quicker than the rest of the web. :)
- dutchdorr, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2That is fine with me. Twitter has to make money people. Get a grip on reality people.
- vwllss, on 07/05/2009, -2/+4@egemenbor: A lot of sites do use the pay-per-click model of advertising. For example, a lot of Google ads are all paid in amounts of clicks. Once Isohunt actually requested users turn off Adblock in order to display ads to help them with their legal fees. I've never used Adblock because I really do feel like it's harming the sites that I love most (that give me free service!)
- Barackalypse, on 07/05/2009, -1/+3I'm against that, the sooner Twitter goes bankrupt the sooner it disappears.
- ShingoEX, on 07/05/2009, -2/+4You mean a site is actually having to earn money to keep itself going? OH THE HUMANITY!
- Mushroomer25, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2I don't see why this is a problem. Twitter needs money to become better, and if they can get it through a non-intrusive method of advertising, then I'm fine with it.
I'll start getting pissed when each Tweet comes with an extra line telling me to see "Public Enemies". - Dargundiggdog, on 07/04/2009, -3/+5NEWSFLASH....
THE MAGICAL INTERWEB IS FULL OF ADS... - homercles337, on 07/05/2009, -1/+3The douche that wrote this has: 3603 following, 11929 followers, and 12076 updates. Im not sure exactly what that means but i do know that the author is a douche.
- canthraxp, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2I thought it ran on Whale souls being carried by lunatic birds with nets.
- supermanred, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1It has thousands of reasons for existing. For example, you want audio book news follow me @audiobookreview or want alerts of news sent to your phone when it happens follow @cnn or @bbc etc.
- ultrafez, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1That was what I was going to do! Incidentally there were no geocaches anywhere along the route where I was driving anyway, but it would have still been worth a look - it's prompted me to keep a local copy of all of the geocaches within a 50 mile radius :)
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -3/+4@senae
Sounds like someone runs an ad supported website... -
