- selectodude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34That's just insane.
1. No, Cingular has this one locked up and exclusive.
2. It's not worth 1000 dollars, get an N95 for 600. - easy4lif, on 10/12/2007, -11/+30I think my sister might get one. She wants a new phone and her contract ended a while ago. personally, take out the phone part, Add more flash storage, call it an iPod and I'll hand over my credit card number.
- lazyrussian, on 10/12/2007, -14/+33No cell phone, no matter how *cool* it is, is worth that much money
Wait a year or so, have some patience. Prices will drop...
Don't be a stupid American....there are enough fo those "I need to have it right now" stereotypes. - Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18@electrosoccertu
also don't forget that cellular service and quality largely varies by area. While Cingular may suck ass where you are from, they are one of the best in my area and the reason that I am currently using them right now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I think whats more of a detraction is that Apple has once again gone down the "non removable" battery route.
- Hobden, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Agreed. I'd much prefer an Ipod like that.
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15A replaceable battery would have been nice... so people could carry around a backup.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21I believe there are better smart phones out there that provide better value for your money than the iPhone.
- HzR3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12If you want it for the music, get a regular iPod! You get like 5 times the storage for half the money and no phone carrier plan... Plus battery life is probably a lot better.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16If that's the case, why on earth don't you buy an iPod, with far more storage, better battery life and at a far lower price? Or a Creative MP3 player or even a Zune?
- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You've been able to transfer your number to other service providers for quite a while.
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/numbport.html - ForTheSteel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13the iphone doesnt even play blu-ray

I Love AT&T - Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Not being able to replace the battery is a HUGE mistake, especially for a device that would be in use constantly if taking advantage of all the features. After listening to music and intermittently browsing the web for a few hours, the battery is going to die and you wont even be able to place or receive a call. Then it will have to be plugged in and charged, instead of just being able to pop out the dead battery and sticking in a spare charged battery. I mean thats just insane, does anyone else even make a phone that doesn't have a user replaceable battery?
- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@turpenine
Are you sure the price is without subsidization? Because if i recall correctly, Steve himself said multiple times is his Keynote announcing the iPhone that the prices were with a 2 year contract. - Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I agree, as stated in my previous post, I purchased a Cingular 8525 (HTC Hermes) for $550 no contract and I think its great. I use Google Maps on it every day, It syncs up with my exchange server beautifully (with push email BTW) I can access my SlingBox Pro connected to my DishDVR on it and watch TV whenever I want (including the episodes of 24 that i missed) the camera is remarkably high quality, there are literally thousands of 3 party apps available. One that I use all the time is Intelligolf to keep track of me and my buddies disc golfing scores. I can even print out graphs and charts to compare each others games. And the list goes on and on.
- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Although the iPhone is very pretty and I'm sure will have a very functional UI, there are a couple of factors that are definite turn offs for me. For one the fact that Apple has decided not to include 3G/HSDPA support is very disappointing to me, since Cingular will be rolling out HSDPA in my area in the coming months. The second and most disappointing factor for me is the fact that apparently you wont be able to just outright buy the phone, you must be a Cingular customer and beyond that, even Cingular customers will have to sign a new 2 YEAR contract. I don't even sign 1 year contracts, let alone 2 years, thats just insane. I walked into Cingular about 3 or 4 months ago and bought a Cingular 8525 (HTC Hermes) for $550 outright without signing a contract and have been nothing but happy with it. I even have had WM6 running on it for the last couple months. I agree with others that have stated above, I'm waiting for a 80 gig touchscreen iPod, with all the functionality of the iPhone, without the phone.
- zeero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8wait a year, every other phone manufacturer is going to have touch screens and fancy shmancy stuff like this one. i am betting nokia will kick this one's ass.

- digitalarcanum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4people are ***** bricks over a 600.00 PS3 are you're willing to pay around 1k for a god damned cell phone?
..wow. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can vouch for the area varrying, around where I live t-mobile is like the wal mart of service providers and cingular has great service everywhere. It is all where you happen to live.
- kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6lol wait a second, if you cant open it to change the battery, where do you put the sim card?
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I am sure you will be able to use those battery packs like they have for the ipod that take double a's or whatever. they are bigger but sometimes nice because they take such an absurdly open form of battery.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@kiantech:
It's the slit you see in the side view picture here (on the outside of the device):

It's even worse here. We've had 3G since last year...
Besides casual use on my phone itself, my main use is for getting online on my laptop _when there is no wifi coverage available_ or when the only network is unencrypted.
> The second and most disappointing factor for me is the fact that apparently you wont be able to just outright buy the phone, you must be a Cingular customer and beyond that, even Cingular customers will have to sign a new 2 YEAR contract.
I wonder if the phone will be available on Cingular Premier. Through Premier I am able to go to a page much like Cingular's main phone page, except with the ability to order them at new-contract (or lower) prices whenever I want...
(plus I get 15% the cost of the phone lines themselves and I get sent to business customer support when I dial 611) - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4There are some good smart phones out there but they're all basically targeted towards the business market. I understand some people want Exchange/office support but personally I don't care. I'd rather have CoverFlow for my music and multi-touch for my photos. The reason I'm excited about the iPhone is Apple has taken the time to design a high quality smart phone for the non-business oriented user.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...as in, "Mmmh, these nachos sure are cheesy! Crap, my phone!"...
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3As long as you know how to treat lithium ion batteries (recharge whenever you get a chance, avoid draining completely), the batteries in iPods last forever. You can also replace them yourself if you can get it open. That has seriously not been an issue for me. I still have the original battery in my 3-year-old sony-ericsson T637 phone as well, and that's headed for the trash as soon as the iPhone gets released and reports confirm that we can hack it to run 3rd party software...
- snipes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8I really just want it for the music, the phone portion to me is just a plus. Add that to fact that I've never owned an iPod in my life, this would be a really nice first Apple product.
- TheGrandGeneral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does this mean they won't be anymore MySpace comment spam..
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3well a crappy camera is $100, a 4gb nano is 200, and then a phone with bluetooth and all that hoopla is $50-100 with plan. So then the premium for squishing all that into one device with a rather awesome touchscreen doesn't look all that bad.
- understudy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
Love Apple, hate AT&T.
Therefore, no iPhone for me.
_ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3How many people actually carry around a backup cell phone battery? I'm betting we're talking about a relative handful of business users. My personal phone usage varies, but at its most extreme (a period where I had frequent, long teleconferences) I've never needed to charge a phone more frequently than nightly. Apple is claiming 5 hours of mixed use and 16 hours of audio playback. If it's anywhere near those numbers, I don't see any need for most consumers to carry a second battery.
- AshelenaOutlaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work for Cingular... and I can't believe this story made digg. Funny. I really don't think the I-Phone is all that... but I'm still gonna sell a crap load of them. $Cha-Ching!$
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1most non-business customers won't be buying a 500 dollar cell just to get a more slick iPod with less storage and more features.
- legatus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9Anyone want to see if it actually works first? Stories of twenty minute battery life are somewhat of a deterrent.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2If all you're concerned with are bullet-point features, then yes. If you want something that works nicely, not so much. I'm not saying that the iPhone WILL work nicely (I'll reserve judgement on that for when I have one in my hands to play with), but just that current options are pretty dismal as far as usability and durability go. I have pretty good faith that Apple will make a device that's practical to use, with good build quality...
- Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3It's not a huge mistake on Apple's part.
They made the iPod's that way and people keep snapping up each new version that gets released.
Apple has figured out that Americans are willing to part with insane amounts of money to be 'better' than the next guy, and what better way to force the issue than to build something with a non-user-serviceable battery. - cobrapeed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11. It is software locked by apple. It will be extremely hard to unlock if at all possible. It took over a year for people to figure out a software unlock for the Razr.
2. Symbian owns 73% of the smartphone market.
3. You're an idiot. - DiggedyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Last night, I went to the 7:00 showing of Spiderman 3 at Shoreline Cinemas in Mountain View. The first seats we selected ended up not working because a young girl in front of me kept leaning back and bashing my knee, which is still healing from a motorcycle accident. So we moved back a few rows.
No joke: Steve Jobs and a young guy (his son? he looked about 14) were sitting next to us. It was definitely him, because he was wearing a long sleeve black t-shirt, and because he spent the 20 minutes or so before the previous playing with an iPhone! My friend, who was sitting closest, said it looked like Mr. Jobs was reading the NYTimes or something. I saw him "double-click" the screen and zoom in on some text. His son was playing with his own phone, which was not an iPhone.
We decided not to bother him.
My friend who was sitting closest said that Mr. Jobs was a bit of a chattermouth during the movie. At one point, my friend believed he heard Mr. Jobs say the word "cheesy." - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1the phone is available without contract, the price is without any subsidizing. Any cingular customer is encouraged to buy this phone right when it comes out without updating their contract or anything. So long as you are using cingular you can use this phone.
- nitrojunky24, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I think ATT is about to get one big surprise I don't think there going to be a mad rush like ATT thinks. I think it will be more like the PS3 launch yawn!
- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Quick!!! Give them your moneys so they can spy on yous!!
- tonich03, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Monopoly is so good, isn't it AT&T?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6iPhone is gonna be hot. Sure its expensive, but Apple's advertising machine will be ramming the features down our throats. Frankly 600 isnt bad considering everything it can do, plus its Apple so it will execute its features in a fluid manner.

1. Yes, and I can think of many North American carriers who have done that with other phones
2. It won't cost 1000 dollars, and yes it is worth 1000 dollars.. the symbian OS is probably the worst mobile operating system i've ever seen. - Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Well I rather spend 3x for something that just works seamlessly with my mac rather than a windows mobile device that will make you do more work and configuration.
Prices won't drop either, they will just be replaced by iPhone v2 at the same price point. - dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11. This phone is not a smratphone (read symbian/ nokia's which are miles ahead - in europe/asia)
2. The firmware is probably fsked by cingular to the point of no return - get a factory virgin nokia symbian and check out what you can do on these network with virgin phones)
3. t-mobile kicks all asses in the US - with a 5.99 unlimited internet access on the phone - i can't ever think of switching to another provider + the GSM works flawless in europe/asia
4. this phone is not even 3G
5. existing touch screens are pretty annoying - i know this is apple but i'd probably wait for a while for the kinks to get worked out.
oh sorry you're americans who are going to buy it - i thought you're used to getting 'cellular/telephone/internet' rim jobs from all sides in that part of the world - step right this way please with you $1000. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0I'm still dumbfounded that Apple has tied themselves to Cingular - Deathstar - ATT.
Its like having the iPod only capable of playing hip-hop. -
