- xquizit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22hopefully intel will follow

- jp3550, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Then new memory. :)
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Not so cheap anymore.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I just spent $170 for a AMD 6000 in late August. Since NewEgg now has them for $160, I look forward to being a big baby about the price drop, blogging left and right about the unfairness of it all, and writing a letter to Steve Jobs demanding a free iPhone.
- afwjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I am a hardcore intel fan, and mac. However I just bought an amd 4600+ yesterday for my htpc. Can't beat amd right now for price to performance ratio. $165 for an amd processor and gigabyte motherboard with onboard ati hdmi graphics, holy ***** batman thats cheap!
- 40-Dan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10newegg's prices are actually LESS on all of those processors.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I think AMDs nomenclature paradigm has come back to bite them. Once one could no longer assess or estimate the relative performance of the processor by it's name, the waters became murky. If they restore an obvious connection between a processor's performance and it's name, I think it may result in a marked increase in sales. I love french toast.
- amnesiac096, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8you're probably right, but they are also preparing for the launch of new products, in which every company (usually) lowers its current products prices. The Phenom chips are gonna be pricey, especially since they are *supposed* to kick Intel's ass. Hopefully they do cuz I love AMD, but we shall see.
- Kale27, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Because I already own an AMD board.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I should add, the X2 6400+ has an unlocked multiplier. That's why it costs so much (unlocked CPUs always cost more, both AMD/Intel).
- pOwErEdByNOS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7These are AM2 chips, not 939 chips.
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yes. All of their dual-core chips cost basically the same to build (except for cache differences). Their cost per processor is actually close to the cost of the minimum grades. Every higher end processor is basically all profit. It also opens up the high end for Phenoms.
- dw2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, if you take into consideration price and performance for AMD/Intel CPUs AMD wins in some areas. Athlon X2 6000+ vs Core2Duo E6600 for example -- both CPUs perform at about the same speed, but the AMD one is cheaper. Sure Intel has the fastest CPUs on the market today but AMD's pricing/performance is still pretty competitive.
I agree with you on nVidia being superior to ATi though, I hope AMD can push out some good new chipsets in the near future -- seems like since nVidia has been in the lead for so long they seem to be taking longer to release newer their chipsets. :( - blogsper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Dell recommends CHEAPER amd chips .
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Looks like I am rebuilding with AMD again soon.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No. Benchmarks:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html?modelx ...
I trust TomsHardware over, umm, TechReport's blob of text.
Your link even shows the 6000+ beating the E6600 (or tieing) in most cases. Hence, slightly better performance. And it's *still* $100 cheaper. Sad. That's called the "E6600 Popularity Tax" that Intel is forcing on consumers! - jgtg32a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm going to get flamed for this but I find it amusing that you said you were moving to a Mac mini and not upgrading, I guess deep down you know.
- KentDiego, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I have the same thing with a BioStar HDMI motherboard. Be sure to download the AMD chip driver so Cool-n-Quiet will work. With C-n-Q the 65 Watt 4600 sits at 1000MHz and still hardly ever hits 18% CPU usage during HD video play back.
- Antebios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4HA! I beat you. I have a Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 754 - Single Core . I think its worth around $30-35.
- g30ph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think the 939s are more expensive because they aren't being made anymore and are harder to find. You could buy a new am2 board, new cpu, and new 2gb of ddr2 667 or you could get a new 939 FX 62 for $400.
- Tenoq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not sure why you're getting dugg down. You're spot on. If I want to build a cheap MCE box, I'd go AMD - I can grab a cheap dual core & nVidia board for much less than an Intel & Intel combo - and I don't need to worry about adding in a graphics card because I've got a 6150 or 7050 onboard. If I want a performance machine, then I go for a C2D - but I'm spending 2x-3x as much on that kind of system.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Definitely No Mac zealots in this crowd. LOL!
- Haapi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Newegg had those prices yesterday. Good thing, since I bought one yesterday!
Of course, Newegg's prices might be lower today, but with computer parts, it's always that way. - gsmaster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5yeahhh.. i never seen a difference except in price so good news for me
- marvinmatthew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The reason the AMD chips have '64' in their name is because, when they were released, they were the first consumer level 64-bit chips (and for the record, they can run a 32-bit OS). But now that Intel's new processors are also 64-bit capable, the point that the 'AMD64' name was trying to get across is moot.
- burty89, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5OK, Intels chips are faster right now, but I'd question them being 'better value'. AMD processors are generally available at much lower prices than comparable Intel ones. I guess it depends if you really need (or think you need) the performance difference Intel currently offers, and if its enough to justify the price difference.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6good news
- ptFoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why are the AM2 35W processors never in stock
- L33tmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3HA! Socket A Athlon XP 2800+
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats your fault for getting a late generation processor. 939 had an extremely long life, and at only 2 months before release of am2, you knew what you were getting into. The socket had already been announced, any amount of research would have told you that your upgrade path was limited.
Worse though is thinking intel will be any better about compatibility. The 775 socket is also pretty old, but not all 775 procs are compatible with new 775 boards. With am2, like 939, AMD promises compatibility across the board. If performance is all you want, go intel, but if you want a steady upgrade path, go amd. or just wait, by the time you need to upgrade the 3800, if its overclocked, core 2's will be out the door. - mattyice11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4AMD cut their prices 2 weeks before Intel's 7/22 price cut, so this is not a response to that.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wait?
I just bought a 6000+ X2 like a week ago. Dammit! - lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't ignore the stupid content above it though.
- reboare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1alls I know is my 3200 939 cpu is playing hl2 orange box just fine....I'll upgrade when they go quad core. Yes oh yes.
- screwloose45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nobody runs 939 or DDR1...So get that out of here. I'll be picking up the 6400+ soon.
- sleeknerve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2if you ever buy any computer part at all, you shouldnt even go anywhere else
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1then your not a top tier mac zealot of the highest order. the PC in htpc stands for "not mac" and no self respecting mac zealot has one of those.
- UltraKill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Another good site... www.zipzoomfly.com bought my x2 5600 for $147 a month ago (currently $138)
- Tenoq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well pointed out. The only reason to get an Intel is if you're an overclocker, or you've got enough money to go top-of-the-line (and must have that performance). Otherwise AMD is generally equivalent or better price/performance.
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1problem is, how should they do it? clock speed? intel doesnt even do that anymore. number of cores? what about everything else, like cache, clock speed, and instruction set? should that be left to the obscurity of the list of features nobody looks at? the only solution is to have obscure names based on relative performance, which is exactly what they do.
- sarnia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1939's go as far as 4200, I believe. I picked up an X2 3800 at Tiger Direct for $60 CAN.
- afwjam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1not true, I am and I just bought a new amd for my htpc.
- HeroreV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're doing this because they have new processors coming out soon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenom_%28processor%2 ...
I'm currently waiting on the Phenom 9-Series (formerly "Phenom X4"), the quad core processors. I've been wanting to build a new computer for a while now, but I think this will be worth the wait. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Long live Barton! (xp2800)
- Tenoq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for that. Your blatant fanboy-ism is appreciated. :p
- Tenoq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My server is a AXP1700+. :(
