so kinda like the world oil. - richgustavson, on 10/10/2007, -5/+71If your PC monitor can't handle HD, I suggest you upgrade from your Apple II.
- Scopitone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+58"only for AMERICAN USERS."
Dude, I can't watch tons of BBC shows. It happens. - pcharles23, on 10/10/2007, -2/+50ok this is very cool! Direct link! http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing
very cool, the player is kinda cool and looks crisp and clear! and works in safari! - DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+48Maybe not Ugly Betty, but Lost in HD sounds good to me.
- twilightzone, on 10/10/2007, -7/+34No linux support? :(
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3019Mbps MPEG-2 transport stream or it didn't happen.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/10/2007, -7/+29Except its not really HD, the images seem to max out at "height: 281; width: 500". That's not even DVD resolution. I guess "transcoded from HD sources" isn't as catchy. Nice try ABC, no dice.
- rootchino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19I suppose they figure if internet savy people are just going to download a commerical free HD torrent
anyway might as well have them get it from us and make it just as convenient only legal and slip in
some commercials. - EarlOfLade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Wrong!!
It's not that Linux can't do it, it's that ABC didn't make one available. Linux could handle this just as easy as Windows.
In a couple of days, a solution will be worked out by the community and .. voila! - moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18You know the rules, "No outside communications with the hatch computer."
- TomFrost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Wow... that's seriously slick! It has a Flash backbone, but it's not like those horrible garbage-quality flash streams they had out before. Really, really, sharp.
Now all I need is for NBC to come out with this, and I can watch Lost *and* Heroes without torrenting! ...assuming they put the new episodes up there soon enough, anyway. - dirtyhand, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21Tried it out with Safari 3 beta... I'm surprised it works so well. Like someone already said, video is crisp clear, no buffering at all, really good job. Now the only problem is that all those shows are boring as hell
- skoles, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Now you know how we feel when we heard the BBC was putting it's shows up online for free. I was all jazzed up for some Top Gear & Fifth Gear w/out using torrents.
- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15should take a look at american inventor
- djh816, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16it's an applet. should work fine in any java enabled browser. firefox worked fine for me.
- piterwilson, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20When will they understand that the Internet has no countries? "Only USA" my ass
- JonLatane, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11You have to pick the HD "show" - you can't yet pick out whatever show you want and watch in HD. There's an HD "show" that has episodes of several shows to try out. When you start playing them, the window resizes and the picture is huge. It's actually quite gorgeous, and yes, like people say, it works in Safari.
- fuckingusername, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12did not work on Opera
- tbye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10We're too busy making the video look beautiful to give half a monkey's ass about what you have on your drive.
We don't search for anything on your drive except where to install so it works correctly on your platform. - pukiman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I sent you one. Check your PM.
- sherwinn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The point isn't to make money on the streams. It's to a) control the online distribution of their properties (rather than letting BitTorrent go wild) and b) generate interest in their shows so people hopefully tune into new episodes on television.
- bcrockett, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It uses a technology called Adaptive Streaming which monitors your bandwidth and sends you all the data your connection can handle- if your connection is too slow, you won't get the full experience. It will become pixelated at a lower speed instead stopping while you wait for buffering. A pretty good trade-off, I think.
- tbye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9We've got dedicated OS X developers.
Still trying to convince the suits that Linux would be good for the community. - Humptydank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8A genuine question here, for someone who might know the economics better than I.
How could they possibly get this to pay for the bandwidth is consumes? Is this Move Networks a multi-cast type technology that takes some of the burden off their service providers, or is it one stream per customer? I just don't see a pay-per-view model being adopted, or an ad model generating enough revenue to pay for what it eats... - lpmiller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9ugly betty actually looks very good in high def. I mean, it's about models, there is some reason to watch it in high def.
- chukd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10The problem with these players is in the EULA, the user gives the company permission to search your harddrive for copyrighted material and disable anything it feels could be used to violate the DMCA. Check out the EULA, you are getting fk'd in the end.
- socomoddjob, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16No linux, buried.
- kapkorn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It works on Safari, I couldnt believe it.
- qniverse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8LOST, boring? Pfft...you crazy man
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9if they can gives 200,000 away per episode on a game show, they can stream some movies...
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7When your computer has a 22" widescreen in your room and a 42" plasma in the living room....yes ;)
- adamantium, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What is that HD charging bandwidth meter thingy in the right corner? When it isnt full does it lower the rez of the vid? I got crappy comcast which advertises 6+Mbps and im lucky if i get 756k. I really wish they would charge me for the percentage of the advertised speed I get (so like I should be paying under 10 bucks a month) But alas due to corrupt local government and franchising laws Comcast is the only Cable/cable_broadband in my area. They are even barring Verizon from laying out Fios since Comcast has exclusive rights.
- artofwar420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Awesome, but still doesn't change the fact that I don't like any of the shows, maaaaybe I'll watch Lost.
- sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6it works in firefox though so you have to give them some props for that. at least it isn't ie only.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7anyone got an american proxy
- Ericular, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Click on "HD Streaming" button. There are four episodes to choose from. I tried out the Lost episode, and it runs at 1280x720. Looks excellent!
- GezusK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5HD isn't just 1920x1080, its also 1280x720. I guess they'll trim it to 4:3 and get the 720 part right, but not the 1280.
Just saw the comment down below...guess they're not even doing DVD resolution of 720x480 - s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, download it on usenet the next day.
- aleclerc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I know this probably isn't the place. but any good proxy suggestions for Canada?
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Try a proxy
- bobblender, on 10/10/2007, -14/+18or perhaps it is safari that sucks.
- coasterswim, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Not only does the CPU not have enough power, but the Wii only outputs a maximum of 480p.
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Not to bad. Definitly a million times better than most streaming TV offerings currently offered. Now, I do watch Grey's Anatomy on HD (via Dish w/ Kansas City locals) and it isn't up to that benchmark yet. So, great offering and I look forward to more networks offering good quality like this.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Unfortunately, there is nothing worth watching in the list of shows available.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So your 55" screen can't handle HD? or are you too cheap to get an HD15-component cable?
- tulsapoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4My whole family has converted over to Linux, In-laws, parents, brother, and my two PCs. My friends seem to be converting rather than go with Vista, so hopefully the trends will make your argument easier soon.
- jman8888, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5we have pm boxes now?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3its the same ***** thing. everything has a budget, and if they can give away 200,000 and make that back from ads, they can obviously find a way to make money from streaming shows online.
- x00x, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Blows away any otherTV viewng experience you've ever seen.
