- faithhealer, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31I don't think the author knows what "essential" means.
- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4Yeah, I find it hard to believe that they think I need over 90 websites that deal with music to get by during the day.
how about apple.com/itunes - Number 1 - HunterTV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"Essential" is everything you can fit on a page to get more hits.
- ErifNeerg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you clearly don't understand what essential means since your reply is so short. the definition can vary to people to people allowing people to create a new a beautiful languages that we now know and love. without this change, we would be a scream halt with the developing of our sociality.
- dacheetah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It should have been "~90 essentially useless Music and Audio Websites with a few useful ones that people probably already know about or would find with a single google search."
And why would you use an online format converter? The time it would take to upload an MP3 and then download an ogg copy of the same thing (or whichever conversion you want to make) you might as well have downloaded and installed a local conversion tool that will do it MUCH faster and without the wasted bandwidth. (Ok, so my upload speed it capped fairly savagely, but still...)

- MavRevMatt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Great list, can't wait to try some of these out and see which I like the most. Mashable is win.
- SSilver2k2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1There is also my music site: SocialCase.com - We are sponsors of Nerdapalooza fest which is happening in California in September. We have 20-30 nerdcore and chiptunes artists (videogame music inspired rap and songs :) )
- SSilver2k2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0http://www.socialcase.com - could help
- dh89, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Down already...

Can I have an invite?
- CAMiasm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5No Rate Your Music?! Outrage!
http://www.rateyourmusic.com- waitingtoderail, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Best music site/community on the web, bar none.
- mirzar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1the author forgot finetune.com for music playlist and music discovery
- Archeologist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ok, this is somewhat related.
I'm looking for an alternative for itunes, but don't want to reupload album art and stuff. I like the layout of itunes, but it's too slow when you get over 4000 songs. It also sucks for playing video. What does digg recommend?- Tonamel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The only player I know of offhand that has a similar layout to iTunes is Songbird, which you can get at http://songbirdnest.com/
It's only at version 0.2.5 though, but it might work for you...- Dohko_Xar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does it support the ipod?
- ghelton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yes
- xister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Since we're on this little diversion here, does anyone know of a player that can handle and organize massive amt's of music? I'm not saying I have a lot, but let's just say iTunes can't seem to count higher than 23, 856.
- Tonamel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The only player I know of offhand that has a similar layout to iTunes is Songbird, which you can get at http://songbirdnest.com/
- PRlME, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1whats a good site from trance and electro?
- SurrealEstate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1As a hobbyist musician, I would add FreeSound to the list:
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/whatIsFreesound.php
It's a large collection of recordings and sounds that are free to download and use under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus License. If you like it, please support it with a donation. - LegOfLamb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Those internet radio sites are pretty bad at guessing what kind of music I like. They always end up recommending some really bad band like Hoobastank or something.
If you want to hear some cool stuff though, type "Karp" into the artist box on last.fm, let it run a while, and turn it up really loud. Guaranteed to annoy the neighbors. - lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2That didn't really do justice to last.fm. It's not just a radio.
- bdbr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The music section of metacritic.com also does a nice job of compiling the reviews from several major music rags and papers. Most of their top 10 is from independent labels.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or does every Mashable post make it to the frontpage?
Not complaining, Mashable's one of my favourite blogs but... - akkdio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0thanks.
- FishingHole, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Most of the music i listen to is from media probe (its still in beta)
It searches dogpile, mp3realm, and hypem for a list of songs, artists, or albums that you want to hear and makes a playlist for you
http://bitstyler.com/mediaprobe/ - GetTheGirl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0the best http://seeqpod.com
- WolfDV, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Im quite certain that OINK.cd with the Oinkplus greasemonkey script is all one needs for a music website (because really is there anything better?)
- consonance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I cann't believe they forgot ccMixter.org . Simply put, it's the best remix site on the Internet. It allows artists to upload samples or remixes of samples on the site, all for free. The best part is that every sound on the website is protected by the Creative Commons under one of two licenses - Attribution 3.0 or Attribution Noncommercial 3.0. But not only does its sample pool include samples uploaded to ccMixter, but also Freesound, Magnatune, and Jamglue. It's really damn good.
- rohan2kool, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3thepiratebay.org
- nroose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4There is no such thing as 90 essential anything.
- naniboujou, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Any music list should certainly include www.folkalley.com It is a streaming site originating out of Kent State with great music and DJ commentary, plus a continually updated/archived playlist.
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good stuff but I wont go through all.
- TheGreatGabbo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd also add Ishkur's guide to electronic music @ http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html . There are hundreds of samples to hear from over 100 genres of electronic music! Definitely my favorite site!
- LANjackal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good mention of Last.fm, which is the BEST music fansite out there, IMO.
However, I'm surprised he didn't mention any music technology sites, where users actually learn how to maintain the quality of the collection. www.hydrogenaudio.org is my favorite of theirs and a real essential for those truly interested in a high quality library :).- jarvolt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree, HydrogenAudio is a great resource. I'm not a huge audiophile, but I learned about things like the advantages of Foobar2000, the Wavpack format (and more recently the new TAK), and I certainly got some insight into how bitrate of different lossy formats really affect percieved quality. Only problem is that many members can be a bit pretentious. They're usually really helpful though.
