95% of the time that does absolutely nothing. Get some astroturfing fellow diggers to help get you on top.
But this list is a good list I suppose. Nothing that hasn't been said already. I didn't watch any of the their videos because I knew they were ads trying to be viral. Doesn't work that way. - manfrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When it comes to marketing, getting a front page on Digg is really not that huge. Digg users are more technically inclined, so they click less ads (much less), they never register, and they leave as quickly as they came.
Money and time would be better spend trying to market to people who might be interested in whatever it is that you have to sell. - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Using their blackberry?
- sciencebase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Move along now, nothing new to see here...
- eathan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Honestly, I don't think you get it at all. Viral marketing has two major components; viral AND marketing. You discussed viral sure, but you didn't touch marketing in the slightest.
- SteveSgt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article said: "Forget neutral, trying to please everyone, supporting several target groups or any of the many ways to be unbiased. Viral marketing is 100% about emotions."
There's a serious danger in what they advocate here. I realize that what they're talking about is marketing. But as one of the founders of PBS once said, "the message of most commercial media is, 'Ha ha, made you look!'"
When those kind of opinionated messages are always screaming, yelling, and blasting us to get our attention, the kind of balanced, thoughtful discourse that keeps a society civil is in danger of being lost.
Metaphorically, my grandmother said it well, "don't turn up the TV too loud, or you'll never hear the baby cry."
Perhaps we should examine the ethical effects of these tools. - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1give $1.00 to some homeless people and they will digg it to front page.
- alimuddinshahid, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Interesting one... :)

The list of viral ads at the end is a useful reference though. - spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't know... last time i got food poisoning it really made me feel something..... i'd give it a second shot.
- zevy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most of it has been said a million times, yet none of these are actually "rules". Viral marketing is either cleverly "forced" (like the original Hotmail viral signature) or the balance of complex alchemy that this article fails to even try to describe. More often than not, "viral marketing" = movie with a joke, sold to a guy in a suit with a big budget.

"Will it BLEND?" - oldtomjoad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When Nokia Corp. released its camera smartphone last fall, the marketing campaign cut back on news releases and flashy ads. Instead, the company sent sample products to 50 tech-savvy amateur bloggers with a passion for mobile phones.
The tactic paid off, as word spread online about the N-series phone, driving up sales and contributing to a 43 percent profit boost for Nokia last quarter.
That was pretty savy of them... their servers crashed three times due to the traffic I believe... - gregburkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1word of mouth, a good product, and good business plan....
marketing's the same as it ever was. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you dont already have a website, this may get you started on the right foot...
http://digg.com/mods/Gaming_Google_Building_a_Site_Just_for_Google_Love - piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Viral marketing is overrated (for now) - I realized this after Snakes on Plane. There simply aren't enough net savvy geeks relative to the entire population.
- oldtomjoad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What is the £10000 question?

Why does that not go viral??? - dueodenum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How would you market a plugin to the Firefox browser that made Google searches more relevant? http://vortexdna.com
- SEOExpertIndia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Interesting tips there on viral marketing. Meanwhile you can read about some prevalent marketing techniques and their relationship with SEO Marketing at : http://www.seohawk.com/seo_articles/marketing_guide.asp
- danielrhodes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of this stuff doesn't seem new, but for some reason, nobody follows it. It always boggles my mind that companies will spend tons of money on lame advertisements when they could actually spend less, use tricks to make it viral, and let the product, website, ad, or whatever advertise itself..
- dfnk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for the clip from Mine 2. Although he should included the River Tam diaries from the movie Serenity.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._Tam_sessions - oldtomjoad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That was our thinking exactly!! We figured we don't have much money for marketing, so we thought the best way to do it was to take what money we could scrap together and use that for something good. We figure rather use it to generate some interest and on the development of a person, instead of marketing in the traditional media and having it all go to landfill in the end.
And if it does not work.... well we will have a fairly unknown site and paying some students bills, which is better than having an unknown site and £10000 in deleted and discarded print...
The jury is still out though :) At the moment we feel kinda stupid! But it is good for a laugh, you have to smile at these things.
http://humanopinion.org .... blatant plug (has to be done) - soloride, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lets say your doing a viral video about bicycles then I would do the following:
1. General Seeding (Digg, del.icou.us,)
2. Focused Seeding (contact bicycle bloggers, myspace bikers...)
3. Make the message have a deep message and a shallow one.
4. Mix in a little luck no make that a lot of LUCK
5. Remember that it is really easy to convince yourself that you have a good idea for a video. So make sure before launching the video that you do a prescreening of the video to see how people react to it.
6. I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. - gapp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Take a look at http://www.surfyp.com. Some good marketing tips are listed as mentioned in this article.
- FoxFaction, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I got a virus from eating at a Mexican restaurant. That's what they call "bad" viral marketing. I'm certainly not going there again.
