- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Don't bother. It's poop.
- Jergens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24The blacks are dark gray and the whites are light gray!
- aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20The link doesn't specify the model number, and the ad is too small to read, but from the brand and going by the picture the Sylvania 42" plasma is already going for $699(incl shipping) on Amazon and other places online. Its also a EDTV not an HDTV and can only do VGA resolution and does not come with HDMI. The ad itself self says "Enhanced Definition Plasma Monitor".
To be officially considered an "HDTV" in the US and Europe by the ITU you need to support both 720p & 1080i at a minimum and have a HD-tuner built in. Usually, they label sets without complete support "ED/HD monitors" or "HD-ready".
http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-6842PEM-Flat-Panel-EDTV-Plasma/dp/B000BTQPAO - Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Perfect for Wii owners!
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17It also features stunning 16x9 resolution! Yes, thats right! 16 pixels by 9 pixels!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Too bad if you look closely at the ad, it says "Enhanced Definition". Not high definition. EDTV != HDTV ! Still an ok buy, but just make sure you know what you are getting...
- Burner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Does anybody else see that it is enhanced definition, not high def. So a 42" plasma with 480p... YAY!
- kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Lesson learned for those not familiar with the technology: one of the weasel words when it comes to flat screen tvs you should watch out for is "ACCEPTS full 720p and 1080i" (or "accepts hdtv signals", whatever the marketoids spout). How many ordinary people would know that "accepts" only means "shows them but not in full detail"
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8if its that cheap, you know it sucks
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I wouldn't say EVERYTHING sucks. Most things, yeah. But every so often you find a diamond in the rough.
I bought a vacuum from there for $59 a couple years ago, it was $99 everywhere else, and it has turned out to be great!
My mom bough a pillow top queen mattress set there for under $500. Sounds too good to be true? Well it was. After 2 short years, to the dump it went. HORRIBLE mattress. Damn thing just fell apart. Money wasted BIG TIME.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i just bought a LCD 32" Sharp and I love it for $789, Way better quality than that POS sylvania...
- o2o2o2o2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7CAREFUL!

- Iceduck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Those feet are just silly. Why not just put shoes on it?
- d3sp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7
Anybody remember a few years ago when best buy had the new fancy Plasmas on display for $30,000.00 ??? I must be getting old. - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't know (or want to know) what world you live in, but 480p is not that big of a step for most people.
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow 480p.
- Hazardc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4480p is NOT much better than what most people have in their homes. edtv's will be a good garage or rec room tv possibly, but within a year you'll see real hd's for this price point that will stay great for years, unlike this one that is going to be lagging behind already *(i watch 720p in my bedroom on cable for ***** sake)
one of these would be alright for a dedicated wii tv i guess, but the life cycle of the wii is going to be about the same as this tv. - Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think the point everyone is missing here is that it's a freaking 42" screen for 800 bucks. Even if it is only 480p, it's still almost twice as big as the tube tv I currently have in my living room. This sounds like a good deal to me, even if it's not true HD. Heck, I don't even have HD cable coming in, AND I have a Wii, not a 360 or PS3, so for my needs this thing would be perfect. And when it comes time to move into the HD world, I could throw this TV into the bedroom and actually spend some real dough on a true 1080p LCD tv for the living room.
- omgbanana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm going to be laughing all day. Subtle comments that are brimming with tone strong enough to be conveyed through text always get me.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is a Plasma Monitor.
- kapkorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My g/f works at a Big Lots just an FYI for example her store only has 2 or 3 of them, so good luck getting one.
- Breeder18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6why waste your money on a garbage TV?
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bought a couch at big lots. It doesn't have any fancy features like a footrests that pop out, but it's comfy, reasonably well built (it's survived college for 3 years already, that's a great stress test) and looks good in my apartment.
Not everything sucks, you just have to be skeptical from the start. - intense321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not HD-Ready. It's only ED.
- intense321, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yea. I bought one, *****. Now it's broken and it's not worth fixing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"down $200 from the 42-inch plasma that Vizio"
ok, this article doesn't make it more than an advertisement to me with slogans like that. - LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'll use this opportunity to voice my fanboyism: If you're looking for a flat panel 480p tv for your Nintendo Wii, this would be good.
- fupresti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$200.00 bucks extra for the Vizio and I get 720P and a good warranty? Sound like money well spent. I picked up the 50" Vizio plasma after thanksgiving for 1499.99 and it kicks ass. And Vizio just announced a 47" 1080P LCD for under 2K. If your looking for budget flat panels, Vizio is definitely the way to go.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can I make a comment and throw it to the wind in the hope someone who buys one of these listens? Can you come back and tell us how many days it takes for shadowing and image burn to occur?
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1monitor...i boought the vizio 42" lcd and it is awesome. no complaints.
- psycx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It may be cheaper to buy, but they still guzzle more 4x energy than a CRT.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7To the morons who for some reason feel the need to comment on EVERY TV that is just 480p and say that that makes it crap...why? Seriously...what do you hope to gain?
The vast majority of people still have regular old TV. So for them, 480p is a HUGE step up. And they will be very happy with 480p for many years. Until the price of true high def comes down enough to get it.
It truly is SAD that you guy think that the electronics you buy makes you better than others. - Burner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, i like how even c|net didn't see that.
"From the ad, it's unclear whether the TV Sylvania offers is a high-def plasma or not--Sylvania offers both." It's ENHANCED DEF! - GatorVIP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FYI, Amazon sold the 42" Sylvania plasma EDTV for $599 last night.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah! So Cheap lol
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My girlfriend got me a 32" Panasonic LCD last Xmas for ~$800. We are already looking at getting a bigger TV. I recommend you go bigger if you can afford it.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All in all, it's just a screen, and not much more, and not much of a screen either.
- 1337d00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 think ill just go to home depot and hang a screen door over the tv i have now and pretend i bought one
picture quality: Seurat painting> this tv - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My girlfriend just bought me a $700 Westinghouse LCD 32" (32w6). I was skeptical at first (I've always had my eyes on the Samsungs or Sharps), but the only things I can complain about with the TV are a distinct lack of DVI input (it *does* have HDMI and a built-in HD tuner), and a somewhat slow menu interface. Other than that, the picture quality is superb, and my 360 shines on it.
I guess the moral of that anecdote is that, yes, I'm sure the Samsungs and the Sharps have great (even better) pictures than this Westinghouse, but at almost double the price, for general purpose, it's definitely worth looking at some of the bargain brands, unless you're a big videophile. IQ (image quality) is very important to me, and I still love this unit. - griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Almost getting to the price point where it would be worth it to buy and attach to a large wall to display artwork.
$699 from amazon.com - sshanafe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I work in an industry where I see a lot of high end TV's, and Sharp's are a good deal. However they do NOT look as good as competing brands with low-def content. High-def they hold their own. And for you geeks out there, Sharp is flaky with their firmware in regards to discrete IR codes. My personal favorite tv's are Fujitsu's(most have a serial port for control too), some Samsung, and Sony XBR's. Yes that's right SONY! :)
Unless of course price isn't a factor, then look at Runco or something. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's kinda my read on it too.
I have friends with Westinghouse (42w2) and Sharps (44", I don't recall the model).
The Sharps do look noticeably better. But they cost a lot more. So I recommend both to my friends, mentioning the tradeoff on picture quality. Some sport the money for the Sharp and are happy. Some buy the Westinghouse and are happy too. Both are good values, just know which market you are in.
Only thing with the Westinghouse is make sure you have recent firmware on your TV, if you don't have the latest, you can have some problems, especially with the digital inputs. You can get this fixed under warranty with some effort on your part. - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought a really nice writing desk from there a couple of years ago and it is holding up great.
- jack45208, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey lrdntwnd, I went to the Micro Center site & couldn't locate any info on that sale. You have a link where I can get more info? Thanks.
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm in SD too (PB), and my place is small too ~650 ft², but the bookshelf/entertainment setup I got from Ikea hugs the wall and has a big area for the TV. I guess measure first... My TV is so damn thin and easy to move compared to my old 27".
- ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This TV sucks! It got a worst buy rating and comes in last or next to last in all comparison tests.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Everything at Big Lots sucks. Something you know suck and you pick it up there as a joke. Anyone that buys a TV there or spends $800 there is a fool
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+132" Is big enough for me.. I have a small living room.. San Diego Apartments that are affordable are smaller than the rest of the US...But I spend more time outside because of it...
