- doctechnical, on 11/14/2007, -0/+42FTA: "comics will only be viewable through the site’s web viewer, and cannot be downloaded to the reader’s machine for storage."
Bets? - flyingcatcircus, on 11/14/2007, -0/+21If it's in my browser, I have already downloaded it. You gotta love how old media thinks this "internets" works.
If ever there was an overlap of two groups it's Computer Nerd / Comic Book Guy.
Easiest. Hacking. Ever. - carolinaws, on 11/14/2007, -1/+22I hope they retain the ads for sea monkeys, x-ray glasses, styrofoam airplanes and the secrets to getting big muscles like Charles Atlas!
- vintagegeek, on 11/14/2007, -0/+14marvel.com is broken. Guess they weren't expecting these many geeks.
/never underestimate the power of geekdom - zforrester, on 11/14/2007, -0/+12What a poorly written article
The guy barely even talked about what was actually happening, instead he went on about himself, how he's "not a nerd," and he does love comics. Screw that. Why can't we have an article about comic books without the writer using that little "i'm not a nerd" disclaimer? - Feasoron, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8While this is a good way to go, we have to applaud a legal way to view comics online for free. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's nice to see some of the large media outlets trying to adapt to the internet business model.
- slickbird, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7As a long-time reader and collector of comic books, I've often wanted to see my favorite characters on my desktop. This should make for some interesting screensavers, and wallpaper;-)
- pantuky, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7Me and my brother had about 10,000 between the two of us. This was an assorted collection of DC, Marvel, Manga, Republic, etc. 2,500 is not a really large number but it is a nice sample. Well worth investigating.
- skyspirit, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5Marvel reports it as 250 different comics (with probably an average of 10 back-story issues per comic). However, http://www.marvel.com is just about dugg to death. Still, it would be nice to not have to click through a blog-type post to get to the actual information.
- flangle, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5Wow, how does this affect the collectibilty of physical books? Are collections being de-valued?
- zforrester, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5http://marvel.com/digitalcomics/hq/
direct link - Reflux, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5FFS! You ***** killed the Marvel servers.
- givinupthefight, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Productivity at work: Dropping.
- LordSpam, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4I'd say none. They've been slowly pumping out CD/DVD volumes of the main titles for a while now. It sure is nice getting 30-50 years of a comic for $50. They even include the original ads which can be a fun trip down memory lane.
- dkm201, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3I realize I'm spitting into the wind here, and I know digg is all about free everything, torrent this, rapidshare megaupload usenet that, but if you love comics you should support the people who create them by BUYING them. At least sometimes?
- charliekwalker, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Can't be true... Everyone knows comics come out on Wednesdays not Tuesdays!!!
- Rolandami, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3http://www.marvel.com/digitalcomics/
Works for me - hockey, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Yes but with great power comes great responsibility.
- jspegele, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2And the answer will be porn, not online comics.
- zforrester, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2http://marvel.com/digitalcomics/hq/
direct link - WNW3, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Thank you, the original post was blathering blog spam, blah. Unreadable
- capotesan, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2I remember the good old days, when I subscribed to comics through the mail. They came in a brown wrapper and only cost like nine bucks a year per title. Part of the reason I quit reading them is because they cost like $2.95 a pop these days. It'll be nice to go back and catch up on some of the stuff I've missed out on.
- zforrester, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1but it seems to be down for now
- flyingcatcircus, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Might even increase the value of your print collection. If online takes off, that means less people buying print versions. Scarcity = Dollars, yes?
- TekTrixter, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Then please provide a link to your "Easiest. Hack. Ever.". We're waiting...
- KiwiHopeful, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2Your website is bro-ken. Worst. Website. Ever.
- iShBuu, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Wow, taking down Marvel.com Kudos us!
- mikehill33, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Any Obnoxio the Clown or Teen Hulk?
- DatVillain83, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1i grew up reading comic books.
digg it.
thats about it. - flangle, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1SWEET, i'd actually like to read the full Amazing Spider-Man!
- monototo, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1they have the internet on computers now
- sproket, on 11/13/2007, -3/+4Losers. Their web site is down.
- legendxx, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1good way to round up the creepy people
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1My collection of thousands of books has been worth near-to-nothing for about 8 years now.
- R3P1N5, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Another rule of the "internets" can apply then, any data that has been publicly uploaded has already been downloaded, and is therefore always accessible by all from that point onwards.
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Hey, Ostrander is a personal favorite, but the comicmix stuff doesn't really feature the heavy hitters. It's worth checking out, though. Had no idea, thanks.
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1I haven't seen the assortment, yet, but I'm guessing that even a subscription doesn't grant access to new releases for the current week. It's probably just a random smattering of titles with little rhyme or reason. If Marvel wants to really make this a viable alternative to compete with the illegal scans, they really ought to make this like an ubersubscription to new releases.
- w3ace, on 11/13/2007, -2/+3http://www.comicmix.com has a better reader and has been giving away new, free, high production value comics daily for better than a month.
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1On the internet, there is always an easier way and a better way to get something you want. But it's not always exactly 100% legal or anything. Marvel.com, at least, is legal.
- junk, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Site was working for a little while. The reader worked well and load times were quick. Could only see the first four to six pages of any comic without registering but the comics themselves looked pretty good in the reader. Some better than others. The collection itself is a little to scattered and random right now. I'll probably check back next year and see how much content they have added, but I would pay 5 bucks to go back and read some of the really good story arcs I remember as a kid and then probably cancel the subscription.
- PinkFloydFan, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1"Hey, true believers
The response to Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited has been so overwhelming, we're just doing a bit of routine maintenance to make sure you have a great experience!
We'll be back shortly.
Thank You,
Marvel.com"
So said Spider Man on a cell phone. Wait, why the hell is he on a cell phone? - bioskope, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Errr I dont know if you know this. But Marvel and DC have come out and said that they dont care bout CBR/CBZ/MinuteMen/DCP or any such things which are the keywords in the comic piracy industry. Bottomline they have turned a blind eye to it. So stop calling it oh so lillegal
- Ratteler, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1"Much like Hulu, though, comics will only be viewable through the site’s web viewer, and cannot be downloaded to the reader’s machine for storage."
I'll wait till they are available through bittorrent in .CBR format. - sdigroup, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1spidey 404
- dib2, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1I actually wouldn't really want to take advantage of that, because who knows if they'll pull the plug on it?
- CtheImpaler, on 11/17/2007, -0/+0I just found this having realized that Marvel's apparently been crippled by some sort of hack. Is this message here something you actually got from Marvel, or something you cooked up in speculation "in event of" a crash or trouble with the archive?
- nanboya, on 11/13/2007, -1/+1$4.99/month (annual subscription) or $9.99/month (monthly subscription).
Guess they are taking their cues from the porn sites on stringing their users along! - Schneckehaus, on 11/14/2007, -0/+0That doesn't make it less illegal, that just means they do not care. Distribution rights are the same regardless of whether they want to pursue it or not.
- ShieldAxe, on 11/13/2007, -1/+1... further devaluing my comic collection
- Schneckehaus, on 11/14/2007, -0/+0You're a little bit dumb, aren't you?
You don't even have to hack anything.
It's already on your computer once you can see it :/ -
