- Typhoon2009, on 11/14/2007, -4/+80I wish I was smart enough to be rich at 23.
*plays more video games* - ericnmu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+56Yeah I'm real sure Google is afraid of facebook.
- kkeith02, on 10/11/2007, -0/+43I like how the media was just saying he was an idiot for not selling or doing an IPO. Now he's building true value to his company (something Myspace never did) which will make him even more of a billionaire when its time.
- whatthefu, on 11/14/2007, -2/+43It's weird. It wasn't even a year ago that Facebook seemed like a small, simple site that seemed perfect for social networking.
- mvanhorn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+38I'm ready to invest in the Facebook IPO.
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -0/+34Um.. Is google really sweating scared-- or is that what you just say for them?
- tony4moroney, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27actually id rather google not purchase facebook. they seem to have been going on an acquisition frenzy lately, theyre reminding me of microsoft of old, or even media corporations that just buy everything out and create a monopoly.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25I wonder how long it will be before FaceBook turns into what Myspace is now...
- deadowl, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Two years ago when I arrived at college, someone asked me, "Do you have a Facebook?"
Before that I had no idea what Facebook was.
Thought after a couple of incidents of harassment, I've definitely learned to keep some things more private. - Ifligus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Holy hyperbole, Batman!
- freehunter, on 11/14/2007, -3/+16Who relies on the internet to help you meet new people in the area? Is there no such thing as bars/clubs/parks/mutual friends anymore?
- asforme, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Maybe I don't login or check facebook often enough, but every time I log in it looks more and more cluttered. I keep fearing it will end up just like myspace.
- hambend, on 11/14/2007, -1/+14Without Google's financial backing, YouTube would have gone down in a blaze of lawsuits. We'd still be feeling the repercussions of all the awful IP precedents that would have been set. Google bought YouTube in the nick of time.
- dcbebop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12God, what would they cost at this point? Are we talking 10 billion? 15? Does money have any value anymore?
- whataboutdave, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Zuckerberg has stated many times that his vision is more important than a quick buck.
He's looking smarter every day. - GeneralSun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11What does harassment have to do with facebook?
- freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9It is if the next offer is $20b
- purrp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8"Just as Google has become what some people call the operating system for search, Facebook is turning itself into the operating system for social networking."
I stopped reading there.
No one whose opinion is worth my time to read calls Google "the operating system for search". - chrisragu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10This article is so dumb. It is just a ploy to get attention. Why would a $300 billion dollar company be sweating over Facebook, a company at most valued less than $2 billion and making about $200 million per year. The truth of it is, Facebook is just a temporary trend that may be replaced by another site in 5 years. Facebook does not have any revenue model apart of some banner sales, where else Google revenue model is making a billion each quarter. So Facebook better enjoy the limelight while it is there and as far as Google, they could care less.
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10He'll regret the day he turned down a billion dollars. There's nowhere to go for this place but down, and an IPO for a social networking site is about as good of an idea today as it was for Webvan back in the 90s.
- dezmo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8no
- Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8If you're worried about that sort of stuff, just have your profile only visible to friends.
- satx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11He passed up a BILLION dollars. And for what? To save the planet? No. It's to have a popular social networking site. Doesn't sound very smart to me.
- disabled4diggin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I dont understand how facebook is getting all this credit for being that great. I mean yeah you can "social network" with people you already know, but facebook makes it hard to meet new people. Maybe that's the point, but if you're new to an area, facebook doesnt help much. Thats where myspace comes in.
Unless im missing something completely? Facebook is terrible for meeting new people, right? - chrisxkelley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The majority of an operating systems functionality will not be online until the entire world has incredibly high speed wireless network coverage. Think of laptops... The entire point is to travel with them. Wouldnt it be dandy if you needed internet for your laptop to function with today's current wireless coverage? Even using EDGE or whatever other high speed wifi technology you use, it would be very hard to use your computer with a slow or no connection.
- frogpelt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Who said Google was scared?
I seriously doubt Google is "scared" of anyone. - KingKohli, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I think Facebook platform is a solid idea with a good business model. The only problem I see is that Facebook may alienate it's core users (college students) with the wide array of applications and advertisements being placed on the site. It's a paradox, but sometimes a social network is worth more to a user when it is more exclusive.
So why aren't there more competitors in the college social network area? I think this is the way to really compete with Facebook. Is Facebook simply too huge? I'm suprised I haven't seen anyone start something in a similar way in the college ranks. - jun2san, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I've been noticing a lot of Facebook stories on the front page lately. Is it me or am the only one who doesn't think The Facebook is all that great? I've had my account for years and rarely check it. I have all the same friends on Myspace AND Friendster. I mean sheesh, I don't need check three different sites just to see that Stacey bought a new outfit.
I'm thinking the facebook marketing people are the ones digging these stories and burying comments like mine. - synik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5No, I joined yesterday with a gmail address.
- jonnyeh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7MS could have argued the same thing about Google 8 years ago. Who knew?
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Facebook is not meant for meeting new people, really. It is meant for connecting with people you already know.
- freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I don't see the Facebook platform being anything good. These useless "applications" on my friends' profiles are nothing but what their favorite songs are, or the ability to throw a beer bottle at them, and it ruins a beautiful layout, one which was very well thought out and simple to find things on. There is no way it could have the features to ever become its own system like it wants to be, not without a major design change.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6yes, for instance gmail is setup so you can very easily take your e-mails/address book/etc. elsewhere if you decide to switch to another service. this is quite a departure from microsoft's approach, which is to lock you in to their proprietary technology and closed formats. google's attitude is that it's your data, and you should be free to take it wherever you want and use it however you please.
this key difference is something that google detractors seem to ignore. google also isn't using its search monopoly--if you can call it that--to undercut the competition by bundling software and services together. for example, you need to sign up for google's various different services one at a time, rather than them shoving all of it in your face the second you sign up for gmail.
just because a large company is making acquisitions of smaller companies doesn't make them like MS. it's simply standard practice for large companies of that size. companies like IBM, Oracle, Sony, etc. all do the same. they just get less press coverage for their acquisitions because they're more back-industry tech/development related companies rather than popular commercial websites like youtube. - lateralus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Google's imminent threats are the FCC, Verizon, Comcast,Cox etc....
Facebook is not much of a threat. Come on. I mean not yet. - salmonmoose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Most of them are going somewhere, often google seems to just be getting it's foot in. However the cheif difference, is, that so far google is far more open than Microsoft, they make it very easy to get at the information in their applications
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Let Zuckernerd have his "vision." If I were him, I'd be living my vision seeing what a billion dollars could buy.
- TDave00, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"Facebook is mainly for people you know." That is until some dating site writes an app for facebook that matches you to the man/woman of your dreams (or that late night booty call :) ).
I have never figured out what the hype was about MySpace. I have never even had a desire to put up a page on MySpace. I get that it connects people, but I guess I'd rather put up a blog. My wife on the other hand loves MySpace, but then again this is a woman whom I set up a Wordpress blog for and she decides to have one at blogspot/blogger instead. So, maybe it's the ease of putting a page on the web. I guess?
My 2 cents. - jonnyeh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why not meet new people that are friends with your current friends, but with whom you have not yet met?
- Emrtr4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Facebook and myspace do different things, facebook is for people you know, myspace is for meeting new people, totally different markets and both will have large demand,
also neither will somehow magically replace Google.com for search engines... - salmonmoose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No - it's open to everyone now.
However, when I signed up I had to pretend to be a high-school student (they didn't require college email) but now my account is locked as a good 12 years younger than I actually am :) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah lets see, dominate the internet or make a ***** of cash and move on to another project, tough choice
- hunchback, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I guess if they wrote "23-Year-Old Mark Zuckerberg Has *MySpace* Sweating" nobody would care. And people would laugh if the title was "23-Year-Old Mark Zuckerberg Has *MSN* Sweating"
- greg9683, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3He thought Facebook was worth 2 billion at the time.
- praveenmarkandu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The biggest money earner on facebook (if it not is already) is Poll Of the Day. Getting data from a specific area has never been so easy for companies.
- Metasquares, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4It isn't just intelligence - it's also luck and ambition. I could have made a bunch of money when I was 12... if I cared about making money rather than making software. At that age (and still today, to a lesser extent), I did not. I don't regret it, even if it would be more difficult (and it would be) now.
- sikosmurf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Someone who wants an INCREDIBLE amount of marketing information...
- chazzzle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How dare they accuse Google of sweating!
Buried as inaccurate. - zeroduck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Facebook also knows a lot about its users (the same business Google is in)... which is EXTREMELY valuable.
- Mjolniir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Why on earth would facebook make Google sweat? I really don't see how unless they suddenly come up with a better web search and start putting it on their pages. Seriously, what is with all of the goddamn hyperbole in "journalism" today? Every debate is a "showdown," every new product is a theroetical "xxx-killer," (iPod killer, iPhone killer, etc.). It's getting to be ri-god-damn-diculous.
