224 Mbps for $1.58 a Month!
computerworld.com.my — “This project will offer 60 million users unlimited high speed Internet connection of 224Mbps (megabits per second) at a cost of only around RM5 (US$1.58) per user per month, which is the fastest and cheapest in the world, ” he said. BPL modems use existing electrical power lines to deliver high speed Internet access and data transmission.

- bingobongony, on 04/05/2008, -16/+5Check hte population densities to see WHY they are able to do this and the US is not. It would make ZERO sense for an ISP to lay the infrastructure to do this when a VERY tiny percentage of users don't give a ***** about speeds beyond what they are already getting.
- PlutoPrime, on 04/05/2008, -0/+8I think you meant.. a very tiny percentage of users DO give a *****.
- theaceoffire, on 04/05/2008, -0/+14How come even our biggest cities can't even get consistent, fast coverage?
How can Canada, which is even LESS dense population wise than us, be faster, cheaper, and with more options?
There is more going on than just the number of people per square mile my friend.- Furkle, on 04/05/2008, -0/+3faster and cheaper maybe but the traffic shaping is so severe it's basically irrelevant.
- bingobongony, on 04/05/2008, -6/+1Ahhh...the Canada weak argument. Go up to the northern part of Canada and get back to me on their speeds nad cost. Almost ALL of Canada's population resides in about 5% of the land mass of the country. THAT is where they get faster speeds.
Nice try though. But again, being simple minded is not a good way to go through life.- Light11, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1A lot yes but not "almost all".
- bingobongony, on 04/05/2008, -1/+1Yeah...almost all. Maybe not quite just 5% of hte land mass, but definitely within 10%.
And the point is that using Canada as your example of a sparsely populated country with better broadband is ridiculous. The areas that have better broadband in Canada are MUCH more densely populated than the US. You go north of the densely populated area and Canada's broadbandis non-existent. - kfedZ, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Bingobongony_Trolls_all_ ...

FTA: "Velchip Sdn Bhd has formalised three major partnership arrangements in Kuala Lumpur to advance its major broadband powerline (BPL) project for 60 million users in Indonesia."
From the look of it, the agreement is SIGNED IN MALAYSIA but the services will be made available to the INDONESIANS.
Broadband internet access in Malaysia is under the monopoly of TMNet, a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia, due to the fact that there is no local loop unbundling. You can pretty much get the picture of how bad it can be when there are little competitions between ISPs in the broadband internet market.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_Malaysia
Even if they DO provide a 224Mbps connection, they will probably throttle P2P and Bit-torrent traffics like they currently do :(

hell i've got that much RM sitting in a jar left over from my last trip to KL. - Batiu-Drami, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1Uh, no it's not. Malaysia isn't a third world country or anything. Average GDP per capita (I couldn't find avg wage stats in 5 mins of Googling, so GDP'll do) is around one third of that in the US so this is the equivalent of $4.50 per month, assuming equal income distribution (which isn't the case in either country, but I'd say it's more uneven in the US).
- caramba420, on 04/04/2008, -25/+240For what we've spent in Iraq, we could have gig-e to the curb of every house in America. I guess blowing up brown people on the other side of the world was more important. Glad to see we have our priorities straight.
- JMSantos, on 04/04/2008, -9/+69If I were to make a list of "Top 20" things the US could do with the money spent in Iraq, providing high speed internet for everyone wouldn't make the cut.

- m0tbaillie, on 04/05/2008, -2/+15Considering the fact that the US - one of the most developed nations in the world - only falls in the middle of the road in terms of our overall country-wide broadband penetration, I'd say it most definitely should be a priority.

- BeavisMcSleavis, on 04/05/2008, -1/+2Our countries money spent on a war, that is ruining the dollar and putting us in debt, has everything to do with this story. - caramba420, on 04/06/2008, -0/+0It should be a top priority. Information exchange is the underpinning of the new economy. If we cannot compete with the rest of the world in this area, we are going to get left by the wayside.
- dusanmal, on 04/05/2008, -1/+1Actually, Govt. HAVE spent a lot of our money (I know NY amount for Verizon: 200 Million!) for the exact purpose of bringing 200MBps Internet to all of our doors, despite Iraq & Co. What did the ISPs do? Spent the money as they see fit without providing what they promissed for the money. Exact example why Govt. can't do things properly. No rumors of anyone asking for the money back from the ISPs...

I don't really care about speed right now (as getting 10Mbps is already not easy, limited by the server side and all the routers and what not the packets travel through)
I just want unlimited High Speed Internet, High speed as in 10Mbps- IanPR, on 04/05/2008, -0/+3Residential High speed is typically 5mbps.
And the bandwidth is usually limited by the line.- Ramzy, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1What are you talking about?
ADSL2+ from TPG is $70 per month, 150GB limit (110 off peak), with speeds up to 24MBits. My router is currently connected at 21MBits. I download at about 2MBps.- IanPR, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1I work at an ISP for a medium sized city.. we don't really have that much fibre or high speeds lines in the area.

if not, my mistake- iofthestorm, on 04/05/2008, -0/+2err, to be properly pedantic it would be 16Mbps or 2MBps, or even 2MiBps to be completely unambiguous and look like a complete nerd at the same time.

- karl722, on 04/04/2008, -2/+12The current implementations of BPL are a bad idea. They interfere with many other devices and what's worse, at frequencies this low the interference can travel worldwide.
- cshields, on 04/04/2008, -3/+9Ditto what karl said.. BPL is very bad for the radio spectrum... More information can be found at:
http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/HTML/plc/ - SubjectiveC, on 04/04/2008, -1/+5That's what engineering is all about. Does anyone ever really think through their "It won't work. I'm basing this on current technology specifications" statements? Yeah, so?

- SubjectiveC, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1I did. I also read digged article. The entire project is based on the idea of making a better structure so that it works and will hopefully be standards compliant one day. Challenges and restrictions can be overcomed by good design, believe it or not.
- karl722, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1Read the above link and then make a more informed comment. You can't change the laws of physics (sorry to sound like Scotty)
- eclectro, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1I really don't see them achieving the 224Mbs speeds either, for the same reason that it causes interference - the powerlines are horribly inefficient at RF frequencies because they never were designed for that use. I bet that it's even worde than DSL. It's great that they are doing this though, so the truth about this tech can come to light.
- lrdntwnd, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Unless part of the project is rewiring the infrastructure.... If you put up powerlines that are designed for BPL, then it's much more efficient and less likely to cause interference.... Considering where the project is being implemented and the budget ($14 billion) I don't think it's inconceivable for them to rewire the lines they need to get this working.
- 007brendan, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1So, just shield the lines, or transmit on some other portion of the radio spectrum where interference doesn't matter.

I hope Malaysians feel the same pity for us poor westerners now as we used to feel for them.
Proud of yourselves, Comcast/Verizon/AT&T?- ricree, on 04/05/2008, -0/+3You're assuming that the final service will be even remotely as good as promised. Don't forget, it wasn't all that long ago that many cities were boasting that they would soon be providing free wireless. It really isn't reasonable to compare a promised service to one that is actually in place and doing the job it's supposed to do.
- bingobongony, on 04/05/2008, -2/+4My city has free wireless. What is your point? Not even a big city. Or a well off city.
I don't know of any city that promised free WiFi that didn't deliver. I know of COMPANIES like Google that promised it but didn't deliver. But no cities.- Ryosen, on 04/05/2008, -0/+5Philadelphia.
- bingobongony, on 04/05/2008, -2/+1I would expect it more in a big city like Philly. I am talking a city of less than 50,000. They are paying for the WiFi by a simple start up page filled with advertising.
- bingobongony, on 04/05/2008, -2/+1For the record, it is not super fast, or anything. When I tried it out, it was like 2 Meg down. But it was about 800 k up, which is twice as fast as Road Runner, which hasn't updated their service in my area in 12 years...Yup..we have had Road Runner for 12 years (first city in the country to get Road Runner) and from the very beginning it was 5 Meg down, 386 k up. Not one upgrade in speed in over a decade. I am fine with 5 Meg down. But 386 up is absurd.
So for most non-torrent people, the free WiFi is at least as good, if not better. Plus, all the towers weren't even operational when I ffor those speed reaings. It may be faster now. (Then again, not everyone knew about it yet either, so it may be slower do to more sharing.)

- neomatrixj2, on 04/04/2008, -4/+1High speed yes, low ping very doubtful considering the amount of connections and the general route the signal would take using a modified original electrical grid.
High speed internet (cable) runs over a laid out, planned, and structured cable grid enabling a minimum amount of connections and much shorter route that I would imagine could be possible using an existing electrical layout.
In order for this to work I would imagine that relays etc would have to be set up to make sure the signal goes where it is intended to go instead of just branching out over the entire grid.- insanebrain, on 04/05/2008, -3/+2sooooo. .. . you are a expert who know's it all. .. cool .. finally somebody who knows what he is talking about .. .
//yes . .sarcasm- neomatrixj2, on 04/05/2008, -0/+0No I'm simply saying cable networks were designed to give internet users low ping high speed access. Current electrical grids were designed to just spread the electricity as more and more neighborhoods and homes are added.
Ping is based on the time it takes for your electrical pulse to reach it's destination and even with the speed of light that reaction can slow down the more it has to travel to get to the destination.
Lets not forget electrical surges, I can just imagine having to pay a service fee for a new modem. Don't get me wrong I would love to have these speeds so I could share more freely with roommates but I'm a gamer so for me it's all about my ping.

- phosphor112, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1I bet that the US can easily do this, maybe even cheaper, but you know what? They are getting money, and thats all those companies care about...I'm still stuck with my 32kbs download rates...and thats with DSL...
- bingobongony, on 04/05/2008, -1/+2I'll take that bet. Because you are laguhably wrong.
- BeavisMcSleavis, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1I just shed a tear for you!

- dizilbdog, on 04/04/2008, -0/+5It's funny one day we may say that this speed is slow. I hope I'll be alive to say that lol.
- oliviacond, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1keep in mind that this is available in Indonesia not Malaysia.
"Velchip Sdn Bhd has formalised three major partnership arrangements in Kuala Lumpur to advance its major broadband powerline (BPL) project for 60 million users 'in Indonesia'. " - mattearle, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1If I have to read the sentence "Velchip Sdn Bhd has formalised three major partnerships to advance the world’s biggest BPL project" one more time, I'm gonna jump off a bridge. It's the title, description and first sentence of this article. No wonder they need all that bandwidth - information has to be downloaded three times in Malaysia. EOM
- Ryosen, on 04/05/2008, -0/+2"Velchip Sdn Bhd has formalised three major partnerships to advance the world’s biggest BPL project"
- Enron, on 04/05/2008, -1/+8Felipe Massa was testing out this new 224 mbps technology when he wrecked his Ferrari at the Malaysian GP two weeks ago. Apparently it was too fast for him, so they're calling in Michael Schumacher.
- luseton, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1Hmmm..i was wondering how the heck Malaysia will be able to get 60 million subscribers since the population is only 22 million. Makes sense that they are doing it in Indonesia. But then again, out of the capital city how many Indonesians are really going to take advantage of this.
- insanebrain, on 04/05/2008, -2/+3sounds good. .. but speed is relative. Your connection to the rest of the world is good. .. but if the speed of the rest of the world is crappy, then your speed is also crappy.
- michaelz92, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1good point, while browsing the nets, your download speed is really just limited to the upload speed of the server. So itll probably feel the same as if you were on an 8 Mbit connection.
- Tatsumi2, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1No it wouldnt. I used to have 10mb/s and now i have 30mb/s and it is much faster.
- jameslhwalker, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1so true, in Australia downloading from state to state you can usually max your connection, however downloading from the USA or any where else overseas can be ***** because of the fact that we have limited backhaul to the rest of the globe
- Jammerdelray, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1it was a typo
