- meefman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Now I just need it to fit my budget.
/zing! - roguescout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wouldn't we all be happier if the Fit fit inside the insider confirmed Insight?
- JohntB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why not just link to the original source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Insight
- michaelg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Apparently you are not familiar with honda or the concept of performance through efficiency.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He doesn't understand either that an electric engine can hit it's max RPM quickly and have more torque then most V8 engines. For example the Prius has "Torque output @ rpm: 295 lb-ft @ 0 rpm."
But hybrids are pointless unless they use diesel/electric combination. But I'm only for that until American law markers get their ass in gear and eliminate sulfur from diesel. Like Europe has done; so we all don't get cancer and the air doesn't smell like ass. - TheCardinal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd be even happier if I they had the insight to build the Fit so that I could fit inside it.
- Aanidaani, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Sadly Honda is still lagging behind Toyota. The Prius achieved close to 50 mpg almost two years ago, and Toyota keeps pushing ahead with its Hybrid Synergy Drive.
- HappyPig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm getting 51.2 mpg over average tanks in my Prius in the mountains of NH. I routinely jackrabbit from lights and beat everyone else. Drive one and learn or suck it, kiddies.
- Quag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@green67
Prius is hitting 45 easy. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The price here is what should get your attention! $17,000 for a car that gets 50MPG? I can expect them to sell fairly well in the era of $3-4/gal gas prices.
- aznbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most definitely, that's significantly cheaper than Toyota Prius or Civic Hybrid. In Canada, (with conversion), it's even cheaper than the Smart ForTwo
- FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article you linked to says it will have a worldwide release in 2009, thats not soon....
- Grayfox777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There's a 150 MPG car from Germany being released soon... why can't Honda make an engine that good?
- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If my car can go 90 mph and better than 65 on steep hills then the only other thing I care about is fuel efficiency. That's why I drive a Geo and don't give a flying fark about what anyone else thinks of it.
People are so vain, peak oil's commin boys and if theres any gas still flowin after the next 3 or 4 gulf wars high mpg means you'll actually be able to afford using a car. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For reference, a baseline Fit is about $14,500. So a $2500 premium isnt that unheard of (the Hybrid Camry is about $3000 more than a comparably equiped non-hybrid Camry).
- Tanuki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you disregard the EPA estimates and go by what real-world mileage is on hybrid vehicles, I don't see how you could say Toyota is ahead of Honda. The Honda Insight is far and away the most fuel-efficient hybrid on the market. The Prius and the Hybrid Civic are pretty much getting equal mileage (46-48mpg).
That said, the Fit's curb weight is 2,432lbs (500 pounds heavier than the Insight) and drag coefficient is no dobut higher than the Insight. Is this thing really going to zoom around with a 67hp engine / 13hp electric assist? I have a 2000 Honda Civic which weighs 2,400lbs and it's sluggish even on a 104hp engine. - jblithe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Sadly Honda is still lagging behind Toyota. Honda surpassed 50 mpg over 20 years ago.
1985 Civic Coupe HF - 54 MPG (hwy) http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/18.shtml
1991 Civic CRX HF - 52 MPG (hwy) http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/7474.shtml
1995 Civic HB VX - 56 MPG (hwy) http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/11703.shtml
2001 Honda Insight - 68 MPG (hwy) http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/16447.shtml - Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then if you consider that the US government will probably provide an additional $2,000 or more in tax credit for the Fit, that means you could get a Hybrid for $14-15k net. Unfortunately, the dealer will probably charge a premium as these probably will never hit the lots unsold before arrival.
- kagayaki1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12007 model is out, this article is referencing the 2008 model (which inexplicably always comes out the year before...hmm...)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22006 Digg user to suspect this story of "viral marketing"
- rimco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, this thing isn't out?! I just saw one on Friday! Had a weird license plate, something like MFR on the side and then a couple numbers (here in IL). It looked just like my Suzuki anyway, so I wasn't too impressed... just another little hatchback like the Aveo, Protege 5, Vibe, Matrix, and Aerio... gee, how original, Honda. At least it's hybrid though.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Rickler is soooo right. We need to remove sulfer from diesel. We'll having clean burning diesel like the rest of the world. That 157 mpg car that everyone things is the next comming. Guess that that runs? a 2 (or 3) cylinder turbo-diesel. Something like that coupled w/an electric motor. That'd be great.
Personally I think that any type of combustion is a poor solution. You can't practically have an explosion in a confined space (like a cylinder) and expect that to be an efficient use of enery. I'm all about electric.
As mentioned, electric can reach full torque in the time it takes gas/diesel's computer to figure out proper fuel air ratios. The current (pardon the pun) limit now is battery technology. If I didn't nead 1500 pounds of batteries to get me a 300-400 miles range, life would be a lot better. - green67, on 10/12/2007, -3/+350?....none of the people I know that has one is making that claim(high 30's)....maybe it can...under "certain driving conditions"....like the ad says....stop and go traffic....not highway....hope honda does better.
- Grayfox777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here's my proof. It actually gets 157 MPG, so I was slightly off in a good way. It's called the Loremo.

About time Honda started selling these cars over here. They've been a hit overseas and with gas prices rising it's a good move for Honda to release these. Only thing that sucks is that the Honda Fit Aria(4door sedan) has still to see North American Shores. I think the Aria would sell very wekk over here. Till then the hatchback will have to do. Now I don't know wether to wait for the Hybird or pick one up now..... - soadman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ Aanidaani - "Sadly Honda is still lagging behind Toyota. The Prius achieved close to 50 mpg almost two years ago, and Toyota keeps pushing ahead with its Hybrid Synergy Drive."
Thats estimated by the dealership, those estimations are never right. - cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ha, I was just commenting to a friend about how I really wish Honda made a hybrid Fit.
Looks like this will be my first car. =) - bowe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ugly car. I want luxury!
- BrunoTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why does a car named the "Fit" look so short and fat? That name makes me think it would be some kind of muscle car, or something that connotes strength and endurance.... but instead that car makes me think of the short fat kid from the Sandlot....
"You're killing me Smalls!" - kozie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2You can still get 80mpg from a diesel (EU)...
And it doesn't have a 0-60 of 20minutes - meleeglow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Screw Hybrids, when you can get it to run off of pure Ethenol or other Alcohol then worry about mpg till then no one will be able to afford a new car because they will be spending double digits a gallon. All this crap about hybrids and low mpg is just a way for oil comapies to make us think we are not getting screwed. When they can do this then I will worry about MPG and hybrid technology. Use all the gas now before they can raise the price anymore
NO DIGG - Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Sadly they tried this but the huge icons were over loading the system and the brushed metal GUI had users worrying about rust.
- jholmes12, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Insight engine would have been great if this were 2001: http://dictionpedia.com/en/Honda_Insight
- mendicitis, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Awesome. With the *killer* 1.0 liter engine, this car might make it from 0 to 60 in the time that it takes hydrogen to become a viable alternative energy source.
- drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0No my friend, the better question is- Will it run Doom?
- magik, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1No, but they're working on getting Ubuntu running on it...
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5but does it run OSX?
