- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46A nine gig drive is an insult. Where are they even getting these drives, out of 1999 era computers on someones trash pile? If they are going to offer such pathetic capacity, why not use flash memory (a la iPod Nano) which would be a hell of a lot more reliable in an automobile.
- cbdgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23get a 200gb hard drive in there, pull up to blockbuster with a monthly membership, run in and out of the store hahah
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19why not just have a bay where you could put your own. now that would be cool.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I'm not totally sure why they're going with a 2.5" drive either... It's not like there's not enough room in there for a full 3.5" drive...
- Lewie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13As long as people think for themselves, the RIAA will never be happy.
- gage006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I agree, but it's a nice start from the auto manufacturers. I'm sure the RIAA is giving them hell about this.
- skidooer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10WiFi. Pull up near your house and your computer and car will automatically sync their playlists.
Of course that would be too simple, so it will never happen. - puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10because it doesnt use a 2.5" hard drive
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ease up there folks.
I'm sure there's more to the story, and it's this:
The NAV in the car uses a hard drive instead of an optical drive to store the map data. Anyone with a NAV knows that the 5.25" optical drive to hold the maps takes up a fair amount of space (although it is under the seat in bigger cars). A smart thing to do would be to put in a hard drive, and just copy the data to the hard drive once (or once a year). They could even reuse the drive in the stereo to read the data to the hard drive.
So, put in a 20GB HD (like in Xbox 360), rip 9.5GB of maps to it, and you have about 9.5GB free. So they'll let people rip music to it.
Seems reasonable to me.
But my bigger question is, does it have a line in for my iPod?
I can't believe people think they'll have problems with hard drives crashing. 2.5" drives suffer a lot worse than this in laptops. - GrinningFool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I'm sure there will be a lot of people trying to put larger capacity drives in there on their own."
Hah. Yep, I sure can picture hordes of Infiniti owners tearing out their dashboards in order to replace the drive... - udayan71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is great, a wonderful step forwards. Although 9GB isn't that much, think about how popular iPod nano is and it only has 4GB. Would be great if you could store other multimedia on it.
- winampman2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Its spelled Infiniti. Not Infinity.
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i cant believe the 1337 haxors haven't picked up on it yet, but if you read the article, it is a "9.5g" drive. ie it can survive 9.5 g's of shock. The drive will be between 20 and 40 gb.
READ TFA! - bfirsh, on 02/13/2009, -0/+6Maybe they are more reliable drives? They need to survive longer than the cars!
- TheGeekNextDoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I've got a PCMCIA slot in my 2006 Civic with Navigation System. I currently have a 4 gig compact flash card in there. This is a far better solution than a 9 gig hard drive. At least I can used a Mac/Windows application to manage my files on the compact flash card. The cards are small and I could possibly keep multiple in the car if need be. I likely could put any standard memory device that is in PCMCIA format in there.
Did everyone forget that Honda started doing this in the Civic? Or perhaps nobody cares. Either way, I love the interface it creates for you to browse your music. I wouldn't want a hard drive in the car for anything. Seems like a warranty nightmare to me. - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They used a laptop harddrive because of its built in shock protection, fyi.
- davidirock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't think the RIAA is going to be very happy about this. But I am.
- ageedoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The 07 G35 will have a built in CF slot as can be seen in this pic:
http://nissannews.com/multimedia/infiniti2007/800px/07_sedan_16.jpg - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49 gigs is a lot of space for most people. That is somewhere around 15-25 cds with no compression, and >100 cds with compression. I think that is more than enough for *most* people.
Putting 9.5 gigs into flash memory would probably be a 1000 dollars addition to a car (they always jack up prices a bit). A 9.5 gig hd is cheaper. I agree they could have gone with a cheap 40 gig 3.5 inch hd, that part confuses me. But perhaps they did not want to overwhelm the design with too much harddrive space and wanted to keep it compact. - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Bose sucks my left testicle.
- mvprj84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is already a nice car to begin with. I am sure people will find ways to remove the hard drive and rip a whole music collection onto it. Oh the possibilities :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Man it makes my 2004 seem so much uncooler.
- StevoX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why is nobody complaining that the iPod nano can only hold 4GB?
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well this sounds all great until you figure out that you can't really manage any of your tunes or take them anywhere except inside your car.
- tlogank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39GB? Come on, I cannot even believe that they still manufacture 9GB drives anymore, and if so, it would seem like an unnecessary cost to start making them again...maybe the article is wrong and it is flash drives that are being used...atleast I hope so. Besides, as well all know, 2.5in IDE drives aren't the most reliable thing in the world...I bet they charge you $500 labor alone to get it replaced @ the dealership.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Because its flash based. You can use it biking or jogging without worrying about the HD going bad from vibration.
- prot0col, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You would think that they could put like a 200 gig drive. They are the first though.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Probably a 20GB HD for the navigation system, with 9.5 free gigs. Add a little software, and get some big publicity.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How long until someone hacks the car to run linux?
Of course, then the car would take three minutes from the time you turn the key to the time you can drive - but you could play ogg files. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wonder if you'll be able to upgrade to a "premium sound system" which will include a decent-sized hard drive. Of course, it will probably cost about $1,000. I'm sure there will be a lot of people trying to put larger capacity drives in there on their own.
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"wtf? 9 gigs? come on! why not a 500 gig drive?"
Oh come on, who's gonna pay for that?
That would jack up the price of this Inifiniti from 38,000 to 38,300. Unacceptable ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah I hear the DVD Audio system in the new TL is VERY nice. I'd probably hit one if they weren't FWD.
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope there better be a way to remove the drive and copy music from your computer, can you imagine sitting in your car for hours ripping music to the hard drive?
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why don't they use flash drives (with large capacities, 4GB+)? I know driving conditions vary for many of us, but roads are bumpy. Hopefully that hard drive lasts the life of the car. Nine gigs is a little bit low for some people, but it should be adequate.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tuxuser, Why not get a TV addon for Car? like people do? or maybe the 2008 will have a screen?
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thats agreeable but i don't think this will catch on with any body. i mean like every one has already said this drive is much too small. even with flash cards its not getting any better.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2INACCURATE and BAD LINK
Strike 1: Linking to blog post instead of actual article
Strike 2: incorrect information (Drive can handle 9.5 Gs of FORCE. It is NOT a 9.5 GIGABYTE hard drive!)
Maybe if the dumbasses who keep linking to blogs instead of the original article would get a clue, we wouldn't have so many inaccurate titles sparking a discussion which is 90% about the inaccurate parts. - Plezops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this is great... it a start so stop complaining about 9.5 gigs. The only other company that comes close is BMW with their iPod support. I have a G35 and its awesome, one of the first that came to austin (2003 edition), but mines only got 260 hp... not 300.
But the first thing i noticed is that Infiniti is spelt wrong nearly everywhere on this page and on the stories page!!! It bugs me when people complain about something that no one else is doing and they spell the thing wrong too... its INFINITI with an 'i' at the end not a 'y' thats the number.... - 1337d00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2less than ten gigs,,,, for a car company name like"Infiniti" and the opulent luxury and great engineering they are suppose to be about,,, somebody really dropped the ball on this one,,, they shoulda thrown in a Pentium 3 computer,, and a dot matrix printer in some sort of package deal for 8 grand
- digital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i don't care what kind of storage or sound system this car has, the exhaust alone is a good enough sound system for me
- digital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lucky bastard
- aceuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They're probably using Seagate's EE25 series of hard disk drives which are specifically designed for use in cars and other types of vehicles. They can withstand up to 2.0 Gs of force and extreme temperatures ranging from -30° to 85°C. More info here... http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/marketing/PO-EE25.pdf
- beoswulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A shame they didn't go one step further by adding wireless (and iTunes for the masses) so you could download in your driveway, any hotspot or trade tunes on a mesh network with other vehicles when stuck in traffic, woot!
I wonder if the RIAA had anything to do with the small HD size and lack of wireless. - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They should just allow iPod(And other player) intergration.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Infinity: a : the quality of being infinite b : unlimited extent of time, space, or quantity
Infiniti: A Japanese automobile manufacturer - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really doubt vibrations will be much of a problem. A laptop can be used fine in a car/bus etc. I am sure it will be well protected.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, SCION's iPod support is better than BMW's or Infiniti's.
- digitaltodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A 9.5 GB drive. Who cares... I mean thats not even half my iPod size. I'll bet they charge a premium for it too. The only upshot is that you could upgrade it to something more useful after the fact and not have ot worry about wiring your car.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes look at the ibooks they use something simalr. they are on rubber mounts inside the chassis
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1like i said it cause it most likey won't creat a buying spree. to me and others it s hella worth less.
