1 Miiiiiillion Users
blog.digg.com — It's now been more than two years since the first story was submitted and dugg on Digg. Since then you guys have helped Digg move from a personal project amongst a group of friends to a huge online community. Now, your contributions in submitting, digging, and commenting on content have propelled Digg to a point I never dreamed of – as of today D
- 7423 diggs

Big congratulations to Digg, but congratulations also to Nintendo, since when I saw more than one "i" in a row I immediately thought they were talking about the "Wii" reaching one million users.
When that starts happening you know you've created a serious brand. - birkoph, on 10/12/2007, -11/+149LOL yeah.. And how many of those are dupe accounts?
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18therodersabides: A Cylon? [grin]

"1 Miiiiiilion users, and we suddenly have an army of one-sided nuts. Yay?"
Actually, if you read through the comments on the more controversial subjects (ie, anything to do with Al Sharpton) you see that it's really more of an army of highly polarized nuts.
And, in an interesting coincidence, "highly polarized nuts" is also the answer to the question: "What do you get when you go to an airport with a magnet up your ass?" - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -9/+172Am I the only one who read that title in the Dr. Evil voice?
- oneSaint, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6A digg toaster!
- commandos, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Congratulations Digg
- elvenseven, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4My 'friend' had 6 accounts =)
- ryland2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Can anyone from digg give us the numbers on how many are recently active. It would be interesting to know...
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17@Humptydank - I heard about that on the radio this morning, VERY. *****. WEIRD.
- Switchnig, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49the millionth user should win a blendtec blender
- littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Congratulations Digg and Digg Staff!
"For those of you who can make it to the Bay Area in mid-April, we’re planning a party to thank you for your contributions to Digg. We’re tentatively looking at an event on Thursday, April 19th in San Francisco. Stay tuned for more updates, because obviously this milestone calls for good celebration!"
I'll be there. Just don't ask me what my Digg user name is.
There are several groups who want to kill me. - Keach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Little, LOL!
Me too. You know the Scientologists will have "representatives" there.
Congrats Digg! - 1389, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5Does this mean that Digg will show its respect and gratitude for these million Digg users by:
1) Providing a "Who buried this?" tab;
2) Taking away the ability of Digg admins to bury or promote stories on their own, without regard to what the Digg voting public wants;
3) Decreasing the weight given to a bury as opposed to a digg, so that stories with a large enough proportion of diggs to buries will stay in the upcoming stories queue;
or perhaps even...
4) Taking away the bury button entirely, and replacing it with a button to report spam to the admins, so that they can review it later, and decide whether or not the site is so egregiously spammy that it should be banned.
No? You mean that you folks at Digg don't really care enough about us to consider doing any of these things?
Didn't think so. - bl00w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Now if we could only get every single person to digg this story.
- Anonymous3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@mfratt
I did it in that Danny DeVito voice... "Five miiiiiillion dollars! Fiiiiive million dollars!" etc - leffunov, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Lucky Number 1 Million should receive a New MacBook laser etched with the Digg logo.
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Pics or it didn't happen.
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2This article isn't about Miis or the Wii. Marked as inaccurate...just kidding
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"I think lucky number one million at least deserves to win a toaster."
Toasters? maybe more like Coasters - KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Or a shovel.
- schleppo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+328Now if only we could a photo section with frickin' laser beams attached to its header!
- Ozymandius3, on 10/12/2007, -36/+13Seriously. Is that so much to ask?
- bonch, on 10/12/2007, -34/+112Congratulations, everybody. In the span of two years, you've turned Digg from a technically-oriented news site with links to programming tutorials, insightful security articles, and other relevant news into a high-school kiddie site that posts a repetitive cycle of: something about the RIAA, something about PirateBay, self-referential article about Digg/Kevin Rose, something about Apple, something about the RIAA, something about Pirate Bay, self-referential article about Digg/Kevin Rose, etc.
I can't believe I'm actually back to browsing Slashdot for news and commentary. Digg is the MySpace of tech news sites. - mad1stl, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7@bonch, you sir are an idiot. You're in here flaming the whole thing, meanwhile here are some of the top dugg stories right frigging now. "Multimedia Codecs for Ubuntu; Samsung Q2 Ultramobile PC Revealed; and 2007 A Hacking Odyssey" I think there's a saying, if not I'm making it one - If you go looking for gross little pieces of sh-t in the palace, you'll probably find some. If you dont like variety go away.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Dont forget something about bush
or a illegally uploaded episode of family guy - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+113
Digg is the MySpace of tech news sites.
Each comment on Digg should be displayed in multicolored blinking text and have an embedded song. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26bonch: "you've turned Digg from a technically-oriented news site with links to programming tutorials, insightful security articles, and other relevant news into a high-school kiddie site...I can't believe I'm actually back to browsing Slashdot for news and commentary."
I've been a registered Digger for nearly a year and a half and am one of the top 100 commenters. Personally I think Digg has only gotten better with time. It's true the community has changed, and not always for the better, but it's still a great place to be. There are plenty of other sites for those who find the site no longer meets their needs. Considering all you seem to be able to contribute is to insult the site and its community I say good riddance to you. Take your grumpy ass elsewhere and we'll promise to stay the hell off your lawn. - MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Actually, I have to agree - digg has become far more entertaining, and, in my mind at least, in that respect, has become a success - however, when I originally read digg it was instead of slashdot, as I got the same tech news, but sooner, from digg.
These days, I read /. for tech news, and digg for laughs - don't get me wrong, I love digg, but the focus of the site has really shifted over the last 8-12 months. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Digg got popular when I started using it ... .................. jk.
But don't tell me you've never thought the same thing re: yourself. - 1iProd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@littlebylittle
I didn't :( - TheBlackLeopard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9you're right bonch, digg has become myspace. I saw a few other likeminded people talking about reddit so I think I'm going to get my news from there. I just wish there was a 'redditnation' podcast each week with a 30 year old millionaire with Peter Pan syndrome and a chubby out of work actor who always talks about his parents.
so long. - TheToecutter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@bonch
You hit the ***** nail on the head. But what do the owners of Digg care as long as it equates to more people, more traffic, and a higher buyout? It doesn't. So prepare for this site to get bigger, and it's real usefulness to continue to go down the *****.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4I expected sound clips of Ken Kutaragi saying "One miiiiiillion users!" I'm very disappointed...
- supernova17, on 10/12/2007, -33/+14Awesome. Here is to two millionth user.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -18/+6why is he modded down?

- se7en11, on 10/12/2007, -28/+11I don't know why your getting dugg down. I thought if you mention those two things separate you were guaranteed diggs, but adding them together AND adding extra characters is a sure thing...
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -27/+4Pronounced Kevin Ruse-ey mahka-ka-ka-ka-ka-ka-ka-kssssss-?

- Brandondork, on 10/12/2007, -26/+9thats it?
- 6ixed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31To me, it was a disappointment too, when I heard about just the *1 million users* claim. I was under the impression that Digg already has more than 4 or 5 million users. But it surely has made it felt like that..to users here in general and to the outside online populace and online markets. I mean, if DIgg..with just 1 million users can create such a huge *Digg Effect* in the online atmosphere..think of the massive buzz it would generate when there are actually 4 or 5 million registered users on Digg.
Also, there are a lot of passive/active users of Digg out there, who just has not bothered to register, but passively/actively browsing Digg on a everyday/weekly basis. If somehow there's a way to count them in, the numbers would shoot to atleast 3+ million or more. I myself was a very active user of Digg for the past 5 months of so, but was too lazy to register. But once you do, you are hooked. Lol, Digging is extremely addictive, to say the least. :) - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9One million registered users. God only knows how many lurkers there are, but it's safe to say it's many, many times the registered user base.
- g4r3thw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3imagine the size of the pages with 5million users commenting :| new comment system!
- littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"God only knows how many lurkers there are..."
I can think of a few: Dick Cheney, The CIA, The "Church" of Scientology, etc., etc.
- 6ixed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31To me, it was a disappointment too, when I heard about just the *1 million users* claim. I was under the impression that Digg already has more than 4 or 5 million users. - Pluckie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Congratulations, digg team!
- dmitriyvoz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0The author has mentioned very much a vital topic today. It seems to me that the problematics of this clause enables to reflect and draw conclusions. You can as to look sites in Russian which mention this theme: http://www.rolid.org http://www.se-ua.com
- JJsays, on 10/12/2007, -18/+67Great! Now give us some money.
- martel, on 10/12/2007, -16/+197Am I the only one that assumed this story was about the Wii?
- neilbaylor, on 10/12/2007, -57/+5I think it's spoofing Dr Evil in Austin Powers
"One miiiiiiiiiiilion dollars" etc - Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+54ya think?
- jedioniram, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5That would be silly, there's already 5 Miillion Wii users.
- createthezerone, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Well actually with all the "iiii" I thought it was something about apple. Oh no, I'm an ad donkey.
- neilbaylor, on 10/12/2007, -57/+5I think it's spoofing Dr Evil in Austin Powers
- Mantarii, on 10/12/2007, -31/+151Great. If only you would have kept the userbase smaller, Digg would have been much better than it is today. After the invasion of the 13 year olds a year ago, Digg has lost a great deal of its value. It truly is a matter of throwing ***** onto a wall, and seeing what sticks. The best pieces of poo, again, judged by 13 year olds.
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -82/+10hey shut up.
- SurrealS4m, on 10/12/2007, -44/+8@mantarii
LOL that is soooo true my friend! - ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -53/+8mantarii:
Shouldn't you be posting on Reddit with your fellow arrogant assholes and Digg haters? Off you go! Buh-bye! - dsignr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44@jwoey
Spoken like the diggers described by mantarii - dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -17/+28Well, it's great how you spend time posting comments knowing that only a bunch of 13 year olds respond. You is sooooo kool.
- rsalsman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30So lets say that a large group of people on digg are 13 year olds. Then a large group of the userbase is going to be digging articles that 13 year olds like. That results in a large group of the userbase being satisfied with the content. Like it or not that is the way the site is intended to work. It may not be perfect for YOU or ME, but that's not the point of the site.
- bonkers1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1@mantarii
Maybe, but then Digg would have been more like Slashdot and seen just as a clone. - qwertymaddness, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0Not sure if its 13 year olds or not... but the arguement "I told you so" or "because our select group thinks it should be" doesn't hold water
- SurrealS4m, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6@querty
exactly democracy works by voting and the majority wins - qwertymaddness, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0@S4m
lol is that why there powers that want the US voting system to work emulate the success of Digg? ie completely annonymous with out any sort of registration? - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18If only.
Front page formula is something like 10% Quality of Article, 50% Presence of keywords (Apple, Mac, PS3, Wii etc) and 40% Size of Friends list. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8I vote to ban ips from any school, high school and below.
- Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@sureal, have you forgotten about buries? Surely you're not telling me that it takes 100 buries to remove a story that received 100 diggs are you?
The majority SHOULD win, but in actual practice, it doesn't. - ratbear, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I agree, it is unfortunate that the site has been overrun with kids that have immature personalities and nascent world views. The fact that they are extremely impressionable and likely to parrot popular opinins magnifies the herd mentality that has become the standard on Digg. But it's not like Kevin and the rest of the Digg staff can limit the membership based on age or some arbitrary population size. I have been reading Reddit more and more lately to escape the insanity, but its only a matter of time until that site experiences an event horizon of middle school infestation.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4
I vote to ban ips from any school, high school and below.
Also include all US government agencies and Microsoft. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4
exactly democracy works by voting and the majority wins
Not in America. - ninjathis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Agreed, but it adds humor to my day.
- Andrewc989, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You are absolutely right mantarii. While there is constant dispute of whether Digg has changed for better or for worse, no one denies the fact that it has changed.
In my personal opinion, Digg is no longer a tech oriented site, no matter how you look at it. Not only this, but top posts now seem to have recurring themes (ie. RIAA, Apple, Video Games, etc). I no longer view the site for interesting news, but simply to kill time (much like media sites ebaumsworld.com).
Congratulations on gaining your millionth member Digg. I'm interested to see what the site has in store in the future. - lynch03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well in response to that I say the digg system has helped bury the idiot posters, and most the time I reach a story all the idiotic comments are buried and if I feel like looking at them I can
- ApplCmptrDood, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I'm 14. I try to act as mature as possible. Don't give all of us a bad name, there are just some of us who are immature.
- ApplCmptrDood, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'm 14. I try to act as mature as possible. Don't give all of us a bad name, there are just some of us who are immature. I act like any other user; I submit stories, digg videos, news, and podcasts, and have digg friends too. The only difference is that I'm 14.
(Edit time ran out!)
- batman88, on 10/12/2007, -72/+11Was I the only one who expected this to be about he Wii? I still digg it, but with all the i's, who would have thunk...
- Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+73do you bother to read other comments before posting?
- batman88, on 10/12/2007, -47/+3Uh, no. What kind of question is that?!
I can't see the comments before I click on the story from my Google homepage. THAT is why I was expecting a Wii story.
How sad is it that your comments got dugg up?!?! So long my dear digg... I fear you have been overrun by retards. - Skitzzo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Batman, you truly are dense. I wasn't slamming you for thinking it was talking about the Wii, I was slamming you for posting the exact same comment as one that had already been posted. (Here's a hint, http://digg.com/tech_news/1_Miiiiiillion_Users#c5589725)
Now I'm blasting you for being too stupid to understand a simple question. - Jcink, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0nevermind
- ragley, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1whats the winner get?
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -17/+31,000,000.
That's a lot, yes, but I'm sure some digg users have seen this many zeros before (GPA, IQ, test scores...)
:P
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -17/+31,000,000.
- 1KrazyKorean, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Woooooooooooooooo good for digg
- mrharvey518, on 10/12/2007, -4/+96I deserve more credit than the rest of you because I have 46 user names.
(I dont do sarcasm tags, but if I did, there would be one here.)- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4And 46 e-mail addresses?
- techmonk, on 10/12/2007, -28/+5Ah... so now the lower end of bell curve has really registered itself on digg and outgrown the smart people. Bury me...I know it's gonna happen....but very soon front page will be full of stories promoting intelligent design and discussing why incest is good.
- wheaty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30why go across the street when you can go across the hall?
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Yeah...because Digg was EVER fille with smart people. Riiihgt.
Actually, it awas filled with people who THINK they are smarter than the average person, but have always clearly been quite the opposite. Being "different" and an outcast does not make you smart. - bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2because this hasnt been happening for the passed year
- Ductapemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"why go across the street when you can go across the hall?"
That's the idea behind Starbucks...
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -19/+16Yeah...and about 10,000 (at best) ACTUAL users.
There is a reason why they NEVEr purge their user list. Not just the ones twho stay away on thir own (which is huge) but the ones they ban. Because they are desperately trying to make it look like there are more people coming here than acutally are.
All you have to do is look at the user list when you still could, and see that over 90% have never dugg, submitted or commented on ANY story (or haven't in over a year, suggesting they joined, didn't like it and never came back) to see that this number is meaningless.
Half of the accounts are peopel gaming the ysstem. Easily. Consumerist probably makes up 250,000 users alone. And the far left conspiracy crap like the Alex Jones sites make up another 250,000.- neilbaylor, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5vagina + sand = broomett

can't agree with this enough! ever heard of the bury brigade or bury mafia? - broomett, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6awwww, neil...so sad you are. Someoen speaks TRUTH about a site that you waste your entire worthless life on. I am sorry I burst your bubble and now you are back to having nothing in your life. But it is true. When the user list coul still be accessed, a few months ago, I checked it out. At hte time, out of something like 50,000 pages of users, I randomly went to pages. over 80% had 1 or less contributions to this site. (as in, 1 Digg, 1 submission, of 1 comment)
It wasn't until I got to the 3 digit pages (as in 500 or so) where there were clear active users. - asauterChicago, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Oh I know buddy, digg is horrible, awful, populated with 13 year olds and tofu eating liberals, the humanity of it all.... yet you still come here and post.
Anyhooo, congrats digg! - JosephGoss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4whilst i don't like broomett, i agree with him on this particular topic
a million users are great, but i doubt any where near that number are active.
could anyone find out how many unique and active users there are on digg?
its still a great achievement though.
- neilbaylor, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3hmph!

- blink21, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Well - there's a better answer than this... but from memory (seeing records in our database), I think it was a story about Cherry OS but this is as far as our archive goes back - covering popular stories only: http://www.digg.com/archive/200412
- blink21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Yes, snlildude, it was the story about Cherry OS. The services.digg.com trick is how you find it: http://services.digg.com/story/001
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@blink21 - Thanks for the reply, I wasn't aware of the services.digg.com trick myself; something new every day I guess. Looking at the story it is some what amusing to see that it apparently still has people commenting on it.
- boardo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I remember the cherryOS story. Can't recall if it was first though.
edit: ahh, thanks blink21, didn't see that reply. Wasn't sure if it was first. - josher, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2The oldest one I have dugg is http://digg.com/tech_news/Torrent_search_engine
Has anyone else here been a member since it was in beta? I have :)
- xerigen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1That's pretty dang impressive. Congratulations, digg!
- illegalcortex, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Is this why I'm getting a "We'll be back shortly." error page whenever I try to go to my profile and click on "Commented On"?
Yay.
I guess.- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Your browser's probably loading from its cache - try hitting refresh.
- illegalcortex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Strangely enough, that's what it was. I wonder if they have some never-expire (or really long expiration) header on the error page.
- sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Where is the party?
- Ndric, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Great to be a part of the 1st million ^^

Could it be me?- kingace, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25No. Now sit down.
- AUChizad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46Seriously?
Did I just get buried that fast for merely mentioning the possibility that I could be the millionth user?
Tough crowd. - kingace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Welcome to Digg.
- AUChizad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Just to recap.

- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Interesting fact:
the most popular story in the past 365 days is about the apple iphone, which 21639 people dugg as of 3:54 EST which means about 2.2% of registered digg users dugg that story - thewump, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5So what's this "digg" thing everyone is talking about?

Niiiiiiiiice. - notfaded1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Don't know what I'd do without digg to break up the monotony of the day. I keep fearing smartfilter will add digg to the blocked site list but maybe many of the smartfilter people also read digg. Happy big 1 digg.
